Here's some lovely looks at some of our AVENGERS!

Published at:  Jul 22, 2011 9:30:38 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here...  Saw CAPTAIN AMERICA: FIRST AVENGER again this morning at an early show at a local theater and loved the film all over again.   Personally - I think I'm the lunatic that does actually prefer 3D.   There were just moments that startled me further in 3D than upon 2D experience.   But then, I love 3D.  I like the effect.   Well - Comic Con just unleashed these on us.   Surprised not to see a THOR one too.   I figured we'd have to wait for our new HULK.   Check em out:

    This is it, Joss.

    by blackwood

This either makes or breaks him.

I'm hoping for makes, because I love BUFFY, ANGEL and most especially FIREFLY -- even DOLLHOUSE was... good. In spots. At times. Second season was great, although I concede that SCC got robbed and deserved the victory lap. I have liked-to-loved everything he's written and directed. I am someone who will see this because it is a Joss Whedon film, first, and AVENGERS second.

But. There's a lot at stake for him. I'm fairly certain Marvel, for all their careful planning, chose him because they have faith, and they are giving him a lot of creative control. I know he's a great writer, and has directed some amazing, amazing television, and I love SERENITY (but I can't trust my opinion of that film because of how much I love FIREFLY), but this is a pretty big deal, and if he doesn't deliver, it can't really be foisted off on budget or genre or studio interference. I think there's no room for the standard excuses that get trotted out whenever Joss lays an egg. It's all on him, and he has everything at his disposal to make it happen exactly as he wants.

Anyway. Posters are great. I think Hawkeye is sad because Joss is probably going to kill him. I'm pretty sure one of them is going to die, and it can't be the ones who have their own franchises to tend to. Maybe Hulk. That ship has sailed, I think.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Firstly, man, Joe Johnston did a fucking solid job and crafted an extremely well made and very entertaining movie. For my money it's Thor>Cap>X-Men. Everything in Cap just worked beautifully from the Writing to the Direction to the performances. Now, was the movie perfect, no, I felt the score was a bit weak and I think they didn't give the proper amount of punch to the "death" of Bucky, the "death" of Red Skull and the kiss between Cap and Peggy. Johnston really needed better music for those moments which would have made them soar. The ending also felt a bit rushed IMHO where I wanted Cap to ask where he was and for Fury to tell him it was New York 2011 before going out with the "but I had a date" line which was a nice send off. Otherwise the movie was excellent.

But I want to give special mention to the cinematography because, HOLY SHIT this movie looked beautiful. I fucking loved the deep saturated colors. Even the greys and blues looked stunning. I found it a bit funny though how they went from color saturation to sepia tones and earthly greens and browns for anything involving the US army. They even played that up in the last scene where Cap wakes up before bursting through the wall into the cold and clean look of today.

A realy great job and Johnston should be doing Spider-man movies because I think he would have been perfect for that series. If only he had taken over from Raimi for part 3. Oh well.

Speaking of cinematography, I sat through the entire credits and was disappointed with the Avengers teaser. I hate the music video style photography that made it look really shitty. Thor's costume looks terrible and I swear that I could see dark hair under his wig. Furthermore, I'm really fucking sick and tired of Samuel L. Jackson shitting up these Marvel movies with his usual schtick. He's not playing a character, it's just him with a fucking eye patch and wearing leather. The reason why Thor, Iron Man ONE and Captain America have worked is because they're imbued with enough earnestness that you can buy what their selling. But Jackson feels like he's playing everything with a hint of irony and it doesn't jive with the tone of these movies.

Anywho, Marvel is now officially 3 for 3 this summer and all of these movie are first day Blu-ray purchases for me.

  • That, for some reason, won some Oscars when it was nothing but Point Break in Iraq. But Hollywood is trying to make this jerkoff into a star which is why they keep shoving him into movies (Thor, Mission Impossible 4 etc...) despite the fact that he hasn't been proven to be a box office draw in anything he's done since The Hurt Locker.

    by quake ii

So I'm wondering who they hired to direct the second half of the movie.....Because it's a fucking mess. As soon as Steve Rogers goes to Europe the film becomes almost unwatchable. I enjoyed everything in New York and the boot camp stuff as well but this is two different movies smashed together. There was ZERO character development for the Red Skull or Hydra (so who really gave a fuck about any of them, really?), the action scenes were short and amateur and the movie was an hour of great retro filmmaking and an hour of made-for-tv garbage. Did Joe Johnston get fired after he shot the first half of Captain America or is he completely unable to film action and suspense? What a letdown. I didn't hate it but it comes in 4th for the summer superhero films BEHIND Green Lantern. That's right, Green Lantern was more intense and had better structure. Ugh. Harry baffles me sometimes.

    by quake ii

I went along with the whole Hydra over Nazis but in the end it just didn't work. They don't show one single battle against Nazi soldiers in Captain America (not even during the montage). Hydra is the ONLY presence on the battlefield and it's just plain stupid. Even the massive German base that takes up miles of land and reaches into the sky is 100% Hydra controlled. They reference Nazi several times and we see three German officers inspect the Red Skull's new weapon but there's not single Nazi foot soldier in World War 2 Europe apparently. But that didn't kill the movie for me. The piss poor action sequences, lack of character development for the Red Skull and Howling Commandos and rushed second half kills Captain America. The lack of Nazis just puts the last nail in the coffin. Joe Johnston has proven that he's a painfully average director.

  • I completely bought Evans as Steve Rogers, he played the part well. props to him. this isnt his fault. but anyone who watched this film and felt like they honestly put in the effort to make this film stand on its own is just teasing their twat. Zero character development for anyone but the main character. what was the point of Red Skull besides making it clear that hes the bad guy. and Captain America killed nazis, a lot, but not in this film. the ending was rushed. Even Caps imprisonment in ice felt like it was thrown together. Im watching the newest Avengers cartoon on netflix lately, and the way they have Cap getting frozen is way more fucking intriguing. not to mention they actually have a Bucky. This Bucky could have been a Larry or a Charles for all i knew. the name doesnt automatically make him the fucking character. im giving this film a C and thats me being nice.

Anyone that argues that the second half of the film was great and not a complete mess is in serious denial. Loved how we got to know the Howlin Commandos and really understood what drove the Red Skull and how Hydra recruited it's soldiers and what Hitler thought of Hydra and how the cube worked...Oh wait, sorry. NONE of that was addressed. And all that advanced technology was worthless on the battlefield as Hydra soldiers were cut down like kittens in every single battle. Rapid fire lasers, 2 story tanks and armored soldiers were about as effective as toddlers against our charging troops firing rifles, pistols and shotguns. But yeah, it's me. I have no taste.

I tried to see CAPTAIN AMERICA, but it was sold out, and I ended up at GREEN LANTERN, which turned out to be a private screening (audience of one). It was hard to hate, but also hard to love. I did love Peter Sarsgaard's makeup, and the bit where Hal Jordan was trying to recite the oath while being psyched out by Parallax, but that was it. It was interesting if only to see the money blown on so much CGI which, for the most part, was only passable.

by the dolphins are in the jacuzzi

I have the same feeling seeing these costume designs that I did when I saw the designs for Singer's first X-Men film.

While his X-Men movies turned out great, the one thing that bugged me was the generic-looking costumes. Of all the cool designs the X-Men had during the years, the best Singer could do was padded black jumpsuits?

Cap and Iron Man look fine, but they're just slight variations on the designs from the previous movies. Thor will probably be the same also.

But Wasp and Hawkeye (the two truly new, original costumes for this movie) just look lame.

Oh, well. I guess that's less important than the look of the Hulk. I hope they get that right. Nobody else has.

C'mon, Joss, I believe in you, man, but give me reason to believe this is going to own like it should.

    by detective_fingerling

It's so disappointing to see Hawkeye look like that. It doesn't even make sense for the purposes of the movie. He's basically a normal guy, so why isn't he hidden behind a mask?!
And what will his back story be? Does he help Black Widow steal Stark tech? Does he somehow mysteriously save Jarvis from a computer virus to get invited into the Avengers?
And even if they did painted wings in the Cap movie, why couldn't they put in his shield wings for this movie? Does the concept of paying homage to a fallen soldier or paying homage to the symbolism of the bald eagle just freak out the suits too much for the international market?
Even if they felt classic Hawkeye or Ultimate Hawkeye's costumes just don't work, why couldn't they have shoehorned in his Ronin costume somehow?

    Bad Art

    by doczola

These images are painfully static. Lifeless. These characters need the dynamism of a real painting, not some digitally painted stiff as a board crap. And the color palette, could we fade into the background anymore? I mean let's face it, movie posters are a form of advertisement, they have to pop. These don't pop. I'm not talking about garish color schemes or anything. A traditional artist would give these characters the dynamic flair they need. Look at Tom Jung, Drew Struzan, John Solie, or Bob Peak. Bob Peaks "Apocalypse Now" poster is one of the most dynamic posters around, and all it shows are two faces.

Ryan Meinerding is a great concept artist, look at his site, but he can't seem to get past the mannequin stage for his figures yet. Maybe he will someday, but right now let's find someone who can. Make this look good!

    Hitler's views on HYDRA.....

    by whatevillurks

....are metioned by the three visiting officers. Apparently Skull was given a wide bearth as an award for his injuries but now the Fuher wants to tighten the rains. HYDRA hadnt been sending weapons to the Wehrmacht and SS as promised. Remember, the real life SS could do whatever the hell it wanted to, with no oversight from the Wehrmacht. Yes, something is "off" in the second half. They cut away from that shootout in Skull's office much too quickly. I would have just liked Buck to introduce the commandos(along with unit affiliation) one by one when they were in the bar, it wouldnt have taken THAT long. Its also not implied before the final mission that the war isalmost over. It needed a reference to Hitler's death to register the timeline in the audiences heads. The creative camera angles on the swastikas were ammusing but didnt kill the movie for me. The poor fighting ability of the HYDRA goons didnt bother as much as hell the HYDRA tanks would burst into flame on impact by Steve's rockets. Cant eleive anyone would say GL is better though. We didnt have to hear about Steve's daddy issues, or his fear of commitment, or have Red Skull not do ANYTHING so he could be set up for a second movie.

Why would Hawkeye need a mask?

    by ceejaynightwing

Granted the silly costume in the 616 universe has him all masked up in purple with a "H" on his head and 14th century boots but seriously? This is a live action movie, no idiot in his right mind would wear that 616 halloween outfit and The Ultimates version of Hawkeye is a Shield agent, they don't wear or need masks, hence Black Widow. Fanboys need to get real!

    John Buscema

    by batfunk

Maybe it's my age, but in my opinion, John Buscema's Avengers were great and looked fantastic, but these pictures just look like generic turd. And where's The Vision for crying out loud? For the people who say that Hawkeye doesn't need a mask, why not just get rid of all the masks then and go completely bland? The Disneyfication of Marvel would have Mr Buscema turning in his grave. PS. Joss Whedon is SO mediocre too. These filmmakers are ruining the memory of the comics.

    Cap/Avengers

    by sundancekeed

Saw Captain America last night. The first half of the film was brilliant. The second half wasn't. The way they treated Bucky was criminal. The Howlin' Commandos were never even introduced by name. And my girlfriend who knows absolutely nothing about comics was confused by how the movie ended. I had to explain to her that Cap was frozen in the ice and in a state of suspended animation. And she's like, well why didn't they tell you that? And I said, well they showed you for a couple of seconds in the Hulk movie, and she's like, huh? And she wanted to know what the deal was with the Rubik's (Cosmic) Cube, which they never explained either.

I sort of get her point. If you walk into this film cold without having read those stories when you were a kid, you're not going to get a lot of what's going on. And in some respects, I'm glad that they're dropping a lot of inside info for comic geeks into the mix but they're sort of doing it as a shortcut to actually telling the story. And Iron Man worked because they didn't shortchange the STORY. If The Avengers is nothing but two hours of winks and explosions it's gonna be an epic fail.

I'm not nearly as bothered by the costumes as some folks. Get the story right and the costumes aren't that important. If the movie sucks, what they wear will be just one more thing they got wrong.

If we insist that she be young and hot, and still plausible as an ass kicking superspy, that sort of narrows the field. And if she has to convincingly russian, that narrows it to almost no one.

And you cant say "A young so and so" (ie "a young gena davis"). Has to be someone under 35 right now.

Pardon the eye-roll, but there seems to be no ostensible reason for Hawkeye and Black Widow's membership in this team. Thor is a god, Hulk is unstoppable and his strength is almost limitless, Iron Man has unbelievable military weaponry at his disposal, and Captain America is a super-powered WWII veteran. Yet, Hawkeye is just a normal man with exploding arrows, and Black Widow is merely an acrobatic woman.

CAPTAIN AMERICA WAS DISAPPOINTING AND AVERAGE

    by k1lling_j0ke

I don't know why there's so much love for Captain America. The movie was too cheesy to enter the realm of great comic book movies. I will say that Joe Johnston surprised me by making a watchable film, but he still missed the mark. The action sequences looked wrong, the HYDRA villains looked straight out of a cartoon, and there was no element of reality. Why would HYDRA use flame throwers when they have magic lazer guns capable of disintegrating people? The climax at the end was also very weak and unfulfilling. This movie had a well written script that was doomed by the shitty director that brought us Jurassic Park 3 and the Wolf Man. I have low hopes for the Avengers, but I have never seen the Buffy the Vampire TV series, Firefly, or Serenity, so I'm not really familiar with Joss Whedon's work or potential. Call me crazy, but Mark Webb's Spider-Man looks more appealing except for that shitty first-person sequence. The Dark Knigh Rises will own next summer.

That movie was just so well made that you almost forgot you were watching a comic book film. First Class proudly sits beside Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Iron Man and X2 as an example of how to make a great superhero movie. Captain America (for me) sits beside Thor, Hulk, Batman (Burton) and Spider-Man 2 as how to get some things right but ultimately miss the mark as a whole.

Man, you guys asking for the mask on Hawkeye are soooo ghey. Really. Really really ghey. Come on. Really? This is a movie adaption. Not everything has to conform to the comic books you read growing up. Do I really have to explain this? To grown men? Jesus Christ. So embarrassed. This Hawkeye is a SHIELD agent. He's not a superhero. He probably doesn't even have a normal identity. He probably shoots people in the chest with his arrows. Good. Of course he won't because it's not an R rated movie. Black Widow, likewise is a SHIELD agent. They are highly trained field ops, who have enough hard-core training and skills to hang with the super-powered core 4. That's all. You're not going to see Hawkeye's training with the Swordsman or his circus carnival training origins and all that stuff, passing reference at best. His mask is ridiculous anyway. Thus endeth the rant. But, keep on crying about Thor's helmet, and Cap's wings, and Nick being black, and no Ant-Man and Wasp too while you're at it...

    Reply to Talkback

  • there are plenty of things to complain about. the fact that cap isnt wearing pirate boots and doesnt have wings sticking out of his head isnt one (or two ) of them.

the number one thing is that the uniforms are functional. then they can worry about the "look".

thor and iron man are exceptions, for obvious reasons.

the rest of the characters should be dressed as practically as possible, with just enough flair to make them recognizable as superheroes.

    by dahveed1972

Either they need to bump up his power set, or explain why a guy with a bow and arrow is sharing the stage with: a transdimensional being with god like power, a billionaire genius with a one-man-army power suit, captain freaking america, and (eventually) another genius who turns into the strongest toughest thing on earth. and that explanation better make some kind of sense.

i personally dont have a problem with him having some sort of superhuman ability. maybe something similar to the super soldier formula that gave him perfect aim and reflexes. or something.

lets face it, hawkeye doesnt make a whole lot of sense IN the comic books either. i like him, but its always been a stretch.

For the simple fact that all of the characters have been established pretty much guarantee's that this movie will be major hit box-offiice wise.

As for the quality of the movie, that ultimately depends on the script. Based on CA, Thor, IM, I'm convinced they're not going to screw the pooch on this one.

  • Now that you can see how the whole story interconnects, it has filled in some problems I had with Iron Man 2... namely that "element" that Tony's dad hints at: He clearly left Tony the clues to recreate the element from the cosmic cube.

Considering that in the post-credits of Thor we learn that the Allies have never learned how to tap the power of the cube. Apparently, even though Howard Stark recovered the cube, Zola didn't cooperate in sharing the method he devised for using it, and Stark never managed to duplicate it. However, he had Zola's weapons to study as well as the cube itself... He could map out what the missing piece of the puzzle was, but he didn't have the ability to create it himself. So he left the map to Tony to recreate with future technology.

Iron Man's armor is running on power originally derived from the cosmic cube. Which raises the possibility... did SHIELD manipulate Tony into recreating that element for them? It was all so very convenient, them showing up with old videos that held the answers to a secret element that solved all of his problems. Once we learn that this is something that SHIELD has been trying to crack for 70 years, it begins to seem a bit sinister.

1972...go google yourself some sense, this is 2011.

    HYDRA

    by whatevillurks

Johnson should have kept the uniforms from the church scene. SS uniforms with the HYDRA logo replacing the totenkopf and the red badge on the shoulders. Still I look forward to a sequel. Baron Zemo would provide for some nice jumping around in time.

Those of you downing Cap are in the minority.

    by beane2099

I work at a movie theater and I had to clean up after that movie eleven times tonight. Every single time, the crowd erupted into applause and even more so when they saw the Avengers trailer. Say what you will, but it was a good movie. And I'm so tired of reading all this Dark Knight comparison nonsense. Dark Knight is what it is and it's a separate entity unto itself. I can't deny how awesome DK was but let's be honest, those movies are REALLY intense. A child being held at gunpoint by a man with a burnt face, while compelling is also not something I want to watch over and over. Cap, Thor, etc. are just a lot of fun and they're good too. That's my two cents. What Marvel has going on is something pretty cool with this interlocking movie continuity thing.

Oh and could you's guys stop using the same party line terms like "painfully ______" and "it's just a mess". That's all I keep reading like every other post.

  • I hope Disney/Marvel put the budget in this to make it awesome. The possibility of the Helicarrier in a live action flick is a dreM come true.

    I wouldn't compare Fox's F4 with the Avengers by a long shot.

    by the founder

Marvel studios is only putting out their flicks and not other genres. They gonna put decent quality into their films. My only gripe is that they play it to safe.

Hawkeye's mask IS pretty damn cool looking

    by winona_ryders_pussy_juice

But I understand why they changed his costume.

The Avengers is shaping up very nicely so far. After Iron Man 2 sucking the future of this endeavor seemed a bit shaky. Remember when the Thor costume photos were released and people were bashing it? Then the cheesy Thor clips were released? Look now, everything is in place for a kick-ass finale ala Avengers. The teaser trailer looks pretty sharp, too. Even if it rips off The Dark Knight vibe ;)

Hulk busting armor? I want to see the crazy inventor Stark coming up with some off the wall, kick ass reiteration of his armor.

My biggest concern, strangely, is the 160 mil budget.

    by dahveed1972

To do this right, arent they gonna need much more money than say Transformers 3 or even Avatar? Am i wrong?

    exactly my point.

    by dahveed1972

If they plan to stage big battles with the entire team, within cities or in space, that are actually believeable and compelling, isnt this going to require an unprecedented amount of effects work - practical and digital?

I guess avatar was a similar situation, but lets face it, that movie was basically an animated film. This thing has to convince us (visually anyway) that we are watching real people in real places doing jaw droppingly fantastic things. Repeatedly!

I mean, the actors compensation alone has got to run 80 mil. Although RDJ is probably the only one getting big bucks (20 mil plus a sliver of gross?).

    Brian Clemens

    by batfunk

The quirky Avengers TV series starring Patrick Macnee, originally premiered in the UK in 1961, BEFORE the Marvel comic. So, I wonder if Brian Clemens ever got paid for use of the name?

Maybe it's time to grow up...

    by hulkiest

Just saw Cap'n America. Liked the German Expressionism recounting the origin of the red skull and the end credits sequence. And for that matter the USO montage. (As I liked the one moment of brilliance in Rocketeer...when Howard Hughes shows Bill Campbell the German cartoon of the rocket back pack take over)

But...the action and story were completely un-involving... just like with the retroactively beloved Rocketeer . And when you're watching WWII grunts fighting guys with lasers, it just seems mildly offensive. Like its dishonoring the people who actually fought in the war and lived through hell. Yeah, sure, bring up Hogans Heroes and any other light WWII movie that's lame. But I don't know. This just seemed kinda stupid and made me want to see a Woody Allen movie or something.

It's a tight rope walk to make these superhero movies work. So far the ones that work IMHO are Superman I-II, Tim Burton's Batman, Iron Man, and as much as I hate to admit it, Spiderman 2. But all the others are jarring for making me think that no one in their right mind would go to all that trouble. Captain America was really jarring. Like I didn't ever want to see him in a costume. And I kept wondering about that hilarious, anachronistic multi-cultural Howling Commandos unit with Dum Dum looking like he stepped out of a gay bar. What army were they with again? What year? Then I didn't wonder about them because they were dropped from the movie. Buncha nonsense...
