THE HOBBIT 1-sheet? What do you think?
Hey folks, Harry here... Over on the website for the rather awesome camera known as the RED they have a display of posters for movies that have been shot with the RED or will be shot with the RED - and the company site has the below poster image... I've no idea where they nabbed it from, I can't quite make out that odd lettering above the BBI of HOBBIT, but I figured I'd throw your attention in it's general direction. Is it a teaser poster? Something that was given to technology partners with the film? Or some bullshit they decided to post on their site to make fools like me link to a fairly dry corporate site. BTW - how awesome is the last shot of the latest PRODUCTION BLOG... It's just about the best thing ever, right?
The Poster has been removed at the request of Warners. PJ and crew are contacting RED to have the poster removed. Apparently RED created a fake poster to enthusiastically chest beat that Peter was using the RED system on THE HOBBIT. Sounds about like what we thought.

is I didn't realize it was a fake because it LOOKS LIKE Frodo, but because I recognize THE FREAKING POSE. It registers automatically to my mind. I think it's taken from when Frodo goes into Bag End right after Bilbo disappears.

I mean I'm not the world's biggest critical asshole, but even I can see on my crappy little laptop screen that this was Elijah standing there, and that this had an overwhelming aroma of the fan-made variety. Harry, you actually know Elijah, he comes to your fucking house, you know Peter Jackson, you visited New Zealand during the LotR filming and have seen this stuff up close, you boast about how many times you have watched the films on your massive hp,e cinema set up and at theatrical showings, and yet you still couldn't see that this was clearly fake as all hell? I mean, really? Something somebody above proved beyond a shadow of a doubt entirely too easily with all of about three seconds worth of detective work, not that such detective work was even needed given how overwhelmingly fake this clearly looks. I mean...Jesus Christ.

I for one didn't expect anything else... it's July 2011 for crying out loud... when was the last time you saw an honest to goodness "official" poster for a movie almost EIGHTEEN MONTHS ahead of release ? (iirc there were some "internal use" posters created for LOTR, marking events such as "Principal photography begins today", but these were not part of the pre-release marketing campaign) In the meantime, I am 98% certain that Harry knew all too well that this poster was - if not fake - then not what it might claim (or be claimed) to be. But he also knew that if he posted it, you would click thru. Perhaps he thought you would share the joke, or perhaps he was just cynically driving traffic. Either way, just get over it and move on. FFS.

That last shot from the latest prod diary... So great! Didn't see it coming one second. So it seems PJ has moved a part of the production to England, maybe just to allow Chris Lee to participate in the The Hobbit. When the tall guy said, a few years ago, that he wouldn't reprise his role as Saroumane because New Zealand was too far at his age, I instantly thought "hey, what about green screens? You just shoot him apart in his own country and then you get him back in!" Apparently they've done it. I say that's a great move! I must say I was not so confident when I saw Chris Lee's latest appearance a few weeks ago for a life achievement award, where he really seemed tired. I love the way PJ brings Lee at the end of the video to explain why he wasn't in Wellington anymore. The man is sitting, which is probably a good idea. The story about 80-year-old Boris Karloff inhaling oxygen through a mask during the takes on the set of his last movie comes to my mind. In some strange way, I find that pretty beautiful. Who would have thought, seeing an 80-year-old Christopher Lee in The Lord of the Rings, that he would be in the Hobbit some 10 years later? Isn't that über cool???

It took exactly .0005/sec after looking at this image to realize it was Elijah Wood as Frodo. After being inundated with Lord of the Rings imagery for years, you would think this would have registered quickly enough to prevent you from posting a fake fan-made poster.

It's still never been acknowledged whether the artist licensed it to RED or if RED just saw fit to take it. The line edited in concerning RED creating a fake poster seems a bit like a load of bullshit since the image on deviant art has been available SINCE FUCKING JANUARY and if it just recently popped up on RED's corporate site then it doesn't take a super sleuth to fill in the holes there. I want to believe he licensed it but at the same time I don't want to believe he got well compensated because it's really not good - which is a shame since his other work is marginally better (some, not all). I also wonder if Warner Bros. requested the take down due to the fact that the artist was using stills from the other franchise without true accreditation. I mean, sure he acknowledges it's Wood in a comment but otherwise doesn't mention that he's used a still from ____ to base the image around.
