    Adam West

    by AKA_Gern_Blanston

there was a rumor last week that he had a cameo in this. Was it true? Would seem and odd thing for Nolan to do as it would likely throw you out of the film a bit when you saw him, but one never knows.

  • Not sure if I'd like to see him in TDKR.

  • July 18, 2011, 11:46 a.m. CST

Nowhere near as effective as the initial TDK teaser

    by gumbyandpokey

The simple "people will die...I'm a man of my word" voiceover was 1000 times more thrilling than a bald hulking man taking a few steps as Batman hold up his fists.

    by bdc777

.... is getting his ass kicked in that clip. I really don't think that there is any way for this film to live up to The Dark Knight. That film was one of those once in a blue moon things that come out of nowhere and knock you on your ass. Having said that, Nolan is on some kind of roll right now that I haven't seen since maybe Coppola of the 70's. This film could be as good, if not better, than Batman Begins. That's all we can hope for. Can't wait.

Not nearly as iconic as the Joker but he’s an interesting character in the comics and one of the few individuals to actually hold his own with Batman. I think Nolan chose wisely. Oh, and the teaser was fantastic...I just want more.

Weak Teaser! There I said it...

    by aphextwin

Crappy CGI buildings (yes I know it's part of the symbolism and not actually from the movie itself); corny headers that is straight from the SW ep.1 trailer. Recycling of old footage. It LOOKS like studio execs were pushing too hard for a teaser trailer too soon. Most likely the Movie itself will be good, but as teaser trailer standards go..this one is underwhelming and relies too much of the confidence that moviegoers will eat it up anyhow...regardless...IMO

  • July 18, 2011, noon CST

The only way to top Joker in TDK

    by knowthyself

Is to create a no holds barred sequel thats unafraid to end things, change things, or shock it's audience. That is the only way you can follow up a film like TDK. Seems like he's headed in that direction. Nolans batman films give me a sense of tension that I just love. The villians are truly fucking scary.

In the last shot of the trailer with Bane coming into the foreground, who is that in the background on the right of the screen? It looks like someone wearing a white suit with some black trimming (a cape, maybe?). It could just be a weird shadow or a statue, but it looks pretty human-like to me. dissapointed with Nolan's Batman films

    by Billy_D_Williams

when I went to see Begins, I was giddy...I loved Nolan...Memento was one of the most brilliant, inventive films of the last several decades. I walked out of Begins with a slight smile on my face from the sheer adrenaline, but inside I was dissapointed. It was too paint by numbers...as much as people like to diss Burton's films, they took some huge changes and did something very dark, interesting things with Batman. I was underwhelmed by Begins. It felt like Nolan was trying to hard to ground an inherently absurd premise into hard, believable reality and it doesn't work very well. That was one of the great things about Burton's films, they hopped aboard the crazy bandwagon and just went for it. Begins felt safe. TDK was equally hyped, and my intial impressions were good. But as time went on I realized the movie had some of the biggest plot and logic holes I've ever seen in a film. On closer inspection TDK falls apart at the seams. As brilliant as Ledger is, everyone else is just by the numbers again. It felt like Nolan was trying to make Heat with Batman in it. I applaud him for trying, but ultimately in ten years when I look back on these films, I'll just shrug.

    Nice

    by auraboy

Okay, so the batsuit is the head-turning version from Dark Knight (at least at the Bane fist fight point). Not sure if that figure in the background is holding a camera or a rifle - but definitely someone watching for some reason. Either way, filming or holding the situation at gunpoint suggests something quite epic in the nightfight. Wonder if the links back to Begins are just to prove a point that this is more of a follow up to that movie, or just because there's so little footage available at this point? I really hope Nolan goes with that faded, overexposed almost B&W look to everything as a colour scheme. That'd give things a nod to a full graphic novel and Bane just looked fucking awesome in gravel shades. BTW having stood next to Tom Hardy when he's fairly jacked, he may not be insanely tall but he gives off serious presence. He looks intelligent too which would be interesting to see a hulking super-villain who is actually coldly calculating at the same time.

finds out Bruce Wayne is Batman. He says "we were in this together, and then you were gone. Now this dark evil rises, the Batman must come back." Then you here Bruce Wayne's voice, NOT Batman's voice, say "What if he doesn't exist anymore". Bruce Wayne's and Batman's voice are distinct from one another. This is what I get from this, anybody notice that. Gordon might say something different. This is just what I heard.

Really, if you're getting excited about the film from that, it's just because there's another Nolan Batman film coming, not because there was anything remotely cool about that. Better than a simple look at a logo, but not by much.

billy_d_williams -- 'Heat with Batman in it' is exactly right!

    by Lucky13

Heat had a very similar vibe. Very well made movie, compelling and all... but so bleak and dull (for lack of a better term)... That I've only revisited once (on BD) and was just kinda glad it was over. Nolan's last few movies (TDK, Inception) to me have felt like a scientist making a film, instead of an 'artist' (again, for lack of a better term). Well made, the story progresses, shots link together, nothing overtly stupid happens to take you out of the films... but there's just no FIRE in them (emotional fire, not M. Bay 'splosions kind of fire).

Definitely Wayne sitting next to Gordon...

    by tang126

You see his ungloved hand and the side of his head before the camera zooms in. Plus he's not using that ridiculous growl voice. I assume: a) Gordon (being a cop and all) has figured out what's what (and is okay with it), but b) has been hurt so badly that he's begging for Batman to return to deal with this mess. So he's talking to Bruce, but he also knows he's talking to Batman. They might've borrowed from the comics and someone's back got broken by Bane, but not Batman's? Gordon looks in rough shape, so maybe that's the catalyst for Batman's return...his good friend injured in such a way? The way Gordon delivers his final "...he must...", I almost think "is he gonna die?" :( This is Nolan's world, and this is all his baby. He can do whatever he wants. He wasn't afraid to leave The Dark Knight hanging on such an odd, downer ending (Batman hunted and on the run, everyone thinking he did all these bad things, etc.). So I assume Nolan wouldn't have any hesitation at all, in his final installment of this trilogy, to do some heavy drama and killing of certain long-standing characters if it drove the story forward and gave it all some weight. I'm looking forward to this. I enjoyed the other two Nolan Batman movies quite a bit. They weren't perfect, but they were head and shoulders above all other superhero/comic book movies I've seen in the past decade. I think this one will be just as enjoyable and well-made. Gonna be a long wait. :) And unlike "The Dark Knight", I'm going to try my hardest to remain completely in-the-dark and spoiler-free so I can just walk into the theater next summer and be truly surprised and dazzled. I OD'd on TDK in the weeks leading up to its release, and I'm afraid it kinda lessened the experience for me. Gonna attempt to NOT repeat that. Fingers crossed...it'll be hard.

  • i am sorry but Batman did face failure in TDK when he failed to save his ex-girlfriend.as personal failures go,you cant go further than that.

Batman always you fear mentally, but now he looks like he's feeling full on fear cuz he sees he's about to get his ass kicked. You can just see he's thinking to himself "this guy is fuckin huge". Also, I like that it seems obvious that Bruce is finally letting the ppl that are close to him know that he's Batman cuz clearly Gordon knows who he is and something tells me Catwoman will too. But this made me brick my pants when I first saw it.

I was all giddy with the possibility that Gordon Leavitt would replace Ledger as Joker, maybe we'll get a cameo of him? I dont care for Bane. He's never been interesting in the rogue gallery for me. So he busted Batman's ass in the comics. So what? Scarecrow and Ra's werent all that great either but they featured large in Nolan's version. by kafka07

I can't help but wonder what this film would be like if Ledger was reprising his role like was intended. Wish he was still around but this looks like a great plan-B story idea. Bane is going to be a formidable foe, the kind of foe this trilogy needs to end things. One feels like anything can happen, and I like that. Maybe people will die, maybe spines will snap! Who the fuck knows. But Nolan is really fucking good at keeping us interested. And I can't think of any other franchise of late that has made me love/hate the wait till release date more than this one.

    by zom-bot.com

    1) if you were nolan and you were filming a fight scene in a dark space where ambient light of any kind is very important, would you ALLOW a camera operator in a white shirt to film a close up scene where mere reflected light from his shirt could alter the scene? especially after Bale's last freakout about lighting? 2)who says it's not bane's crew or the league of shadows filming the snuff of batman? or even gotham news forced to air it live?

    Potential Plot Line

    by jf

Just my .02... With all of the talk of the 3rd film "bringing things back full circle", I've been putting some thought into which ways the story could go. I sat down this weekend and watched Batman Begins and tried to look for some themes that could resurface (considering the blatant Rahs quotes used in the teaser). Here are some interlocking ideas based on Begins and TDK of hour the film could shape up: - "Training is nothing. Will is everything." (Rah's/Bruce frozen lake training scene: Begins). Despite having the training and gadgets, Batman's will (and body) is going to fail him. Knightfall plotpoint... - "Why do we fall?" (Thomas Wayne: Begins) Batman will have to become physically and mentally inspired following defeat by Bane, to become the hero of legend. Rocky III... - "Don't be afraid..." (Thomas Wayne: Begins) Bane is going to put the fear back in Batman (physical fear, fear of failure). Seems like this is the case in the teaser... - "You have all these silly little rules..." (Joker: TDK) Maybe Batman will have to break his rule...? - Teaser hinting at "No Man's Land" tie in (ie. catastrphic event to all of Gotham)? - I've yet to see how Catwoman will play into this, other than representing the "anti-hero(ine)" that can be good, but will break the rules. - I really think there will be plot elements from TDKR and Knightfall in this film (in some iteration), and that it will conclude with Batman restored, the "legend" solidified, and assumed to be on-going (no real end to the legend). - The rest will be in the details (Laz Pit, Arkam Breakout, some random terror plot (or perhaps the plot will be just to destroy Gotham) fate of Gotham).

    person in the background...

    by Richard

I think Nolan knows what he's doing. If they knew they were filming the scene from multiple angles, do you honestly think he'd tell the guy to dress in all white? especially when where he's standing is pretty shadowed and it would be tough to see them if he was in black. I think you're supposed to see whoever it is. I also think the Gordon/Wayne conversation is false editing. Gordon is probably walking to JGL's character, trying to convince him that Gotham needs Batman. While Wayne's voice is probably from a conversation with Selina or Alfred.

This could easily surpass TDK in revenue

    by TheLastCleric

Nolan is now a marquee director; one of the few filmmakers to transcend the film enthusiast population and become a household name with the masses. All you need do is take a gander at the gross for Inception, which violates just about every unspoken rule of the summer film paradigm, and realize the man’s name carries significant sway. Combine this with the fact that TDKR is a sequel to the most successful comic book movie of all time and I’m relatively certain it will meet if not exceed all financial projections, perhaps even becoming the highest grossing domestic film of all time. Also, TDK didn’t gross over five-hundred million merely because a dead actor gave a brilliant performance; TDK made that kind of money because it was a fantastic film and people went to see it multiple times.

The creators of the critically acclaimed TDK, which also happens to be one of the top ten grossing films of all time, have no idea how to shoot their widely (and wildly) anticipated 3rd film going so far as to have members of the crew accidentally show up shots; especially during what appears to be a major scene filled with terror and excitement. I really think......

    by Number9997

.......it is hard to make any assumptions about this film. They've done an excellent job keeping the plot under wraps. Do we even know in what capacity Selina Kyle plays Catwoman? I doubt we will see a full-on Catwoman. I think Selina Kyle is just Selina Kyle. I also think you will see Batman on the run from the police and still fighting the mob. I really don't see the room for a league of shadows/Catwoman presence in this finale. Remember at the end of TDK? Harvey Dent was killed and Batman took responsibility . There has to be a carry over. I think everyone underestimates the JGL role. I am sure he is playing some kind of villain out for Batman. I think everyone is overestimating Bane's role. The Joker warned Batman that dressing in a bat costume and fighting crime would bring out more weirdos. I just think Bane is another criminal weirdo! These movies are about playing with themes. Each character is the sum of all the parts. This movie will kick ass just like its predecessors. I just don't believe you will see it veer off course.

Not much to go on, but it gets me excited nonetheless

    by Kammich

Just knowing that, yeah, they are really putting this puppy to celluloid as we type. I was on board with the villain choice of Bane from day one, simply because I think the comic roots of the character are right up the alleys of both Nolan as a writer/director and Hardy as a performer. He is the antithesis of both Wayne and Batman. He took the fall for his father, serving his entire life in the worst prison in the world, using that grueling time to hone his skills as a genius, criminal mastermind, and brute physical specimen; whereas the death of Thomas Wayne was the catalyst that woke Bruce up and made him realize that he had to use his skills and resources to make a POSITIVE difference in the world. I'm excited to see if Nolan goes the route of the "just-doesn't-give-a-fuck" for Bane like he did with Joker; the difference being, Bane is a much more imposing hand-to-hand threat for Batman. But I get the vibe that Bane is just going to be a homing missile that has one goal: kill Batman, or die in the process. And if that brief glimpse of the alley fight is an indication, that could lead to some AWESOME shit. also, one thing you can definitely tell from the teaser: no "Venom" tubes of any kind. I never thought Nolan would go that route(nor do I think he'll do the Lazarus pit, at least as we know it), but I'm relieved anyway.

    HAHA a crewmember huh

    by PedroM

Anyway, I'm hoping they carry from the TDK ending, with Batman being on the run and so on.

  • Use your heads, folks. This isn't some hacky SyFy filmmaker here. Plus, Nolan, WB and DC all have to know that any sort of teaser, a year out, is going to be viewed and analyzed about 19 gazillion times. You don't think everyone saw - and signed off on - this teaser before it was made public? It's definitely a person. But I'll assume they're part of the scene, as the alternative is just too nutty to imagine. Whether they're holding a gun or camera really doesn't matter (both make sense, depending on the situation being played out). But it's no "accident" or slip. If WE all saw it immediately upon first viewing, do you not think Nolan, his editors and a few dozen people at WB and/or DC (or whoever else is on on such a thing) saw it too and would've said "whoa, guys...there's a crew member visible in that final shot, behind Batman!" Come on. Don't be silly, folks. I know it's the Internet and all, but still... :)

Batman is obviously being FORCED to brawl at gunpoint.

    by Quake II

The person on the catwalk is holding a rifle at Batman while Bane beats him mercilessly. It's pretty obvious to me. You people that think it's a cameraman are idiots. Nolan and a shitload of professionals sat in the editing room and put this trailer together with HD equipment and widescreen monitors. Yeah, they didn't notice the guy standing above the fight that takes up 5% of the screen. My guess is Batman is stripped of his gear and gadgets and is forced to fight to the death. And Gordon is talking to Bruce Wayne in desperation about Batman but nothing indicates he KNOWS Bruce is Batman.

Second time around, League of Shadows makes sure Bats is away from his toys and is forced to fistfight Bane. That's when the shit hits the fan and Bane breaks Batman's back. Bane is now picked to be what Bruce could not be or would not do. the best thing Bruce had when coming out of prison and becoming a vigilante was FUNDS. without those, what would he have done? would he have been just another warped vigilante with strength or guns, attacking whatever he perceived as injustce? now imagine Bane- born into nothing, has nothing, willing to do anything to suit his mutated idea of social justice- and with the backing of a huge international league.

  • I like Joss Whedon, and I've liked most of these Avengers related Marvel movies, but Nolan's Batman has All Time Classic status. TDKR is *easily* going to "beat" Avengers both in terms of critical acclaim and box office receipts. I don't have any stake in this, so don't jump down my throat, I'm just stating my opinion. I plan on seeing both, of course.

Whats Neeson say at the end of his dialogue?

    by KongMonkey

Sounds like "A legend, destroying a legend." Is this new dialogue similar to the one from BB, only now Ra's is telling Bane this? And I believe the guy in the suit in the background is Joseph Gordan Levitt with a gun. At least it looks like him.

Enjoy your opening box office record for one year Potter your going to get smoked next May.

  • Heath Ledger was part of the draw but the repeat business was because it was the first superhero movie that truly crossed over from "geeks & kids only" appeal and allowed teenagers, women and non-basement dwelling male adults to love a superhero film as well. TDK is truly a fantastic movie and the box office proved it. Nolan seems to improve these Batman films as he goes so I'm hoping TDKR will be a masterpiece and held up as the reference for a perfect Batman movie.

I always thought Bane is pretty fascinating

    by David Cloverfield

He had this "Dark Batman" thing going on for a while, someone born with Bruce's talents but without the guidiance or background. While Bruce lost someone, Bane never had anyone to begin with. I love it that they link him to Bruce's training.

Another thing: if Bruce is out of the picture

    by David Cloverfield

It would be a perfect time to introduce his replacements. Just a few news stories about the city going to hell while new vigilantes pop up (Catwoman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl). Not on screen, only mentioned, like the Joker in Begins, making Bruce realize this Batman deal will be even more complicated than he thought when the credits come. Hell, maybe even have him retire thanks to his injuries from Bane and just train and command those he sees potential in - something that eventually evolves into the Bat-Family, with Bruce "Becoming so much more than a man, a legend." Nice, full circle from Ra's and the first film.

Don't abandon the "citizens of Gotham" character

    by Sorbo1980

One thing that TDK did very well was making Gotham and its citizens one of the "characters" of the TDK. (BB has some of these elements done well, though TDK just did it better.) There are so many scenes of just the city and people mucking about. Christ, some dude in a truck gets decent screen time ramming Gordon's SUV. I hope Nolan doesn't abandon the "citizens of Gotham" as a character for the story.

Bane beats Bats early then loses at the end?

Why are so many people assuming Bane will beat Batman and then lose to him in a second fight? That would be pretty much what everyone expects - would Nolan really dish up something that obvious? I hope Bane breaks Batman's back at the end of the film and either Batman beats him through technology, a trap set in advance, or someone unexpected takes Bane out - Alfred perhaps?

WHO HAS A LINK TO THE LEAKED AVENGERS TRAILER????

    by the Green Gargantua

  • TDKR is the third round of a fight in which the prize is Gotham's soul. Batman won round one and lost round two. With Gordon barely alive, the symbolism of Gotham crumbling, and a glimpse of Bane's intimidating presence, the teaser shows us that round three is for all the marbles. Not exactly sure how Selina Kyle, Miranda Tate (if that really is Talia Al Ghul), and the beat cop portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play into this, but if the Nolan, et. al have really reached into the source material and derived something from the "Legacy" story arc, then the direction into which they're taking this legacy makes a whole lot of sense and TKDR can successfully build upon "The Dark Knight."

What a larf that people look forward to a Batman movie with Bane when he's the equivalent to Venom in Spidey. I despise these early show-nothing, say nothing, amount to nothing trailers almost as much as the fanboy losers who get all geeked over them. Bane? Count me out.

    Chanting translation

    by FireStarter

I am sure this has been passed around but has it been confirmed? Some said it was "Bane! Bane! Matalo! Matalo!" Which would be Spanish for bane bane kill kill (or kill him). I am not sure of the second part of the chant, but if you slow the chanting down to somewhere between 50% and 75% speed you can hear the Bane! Bane! part. The second part being a spanish word makes sense given Bane's origin. I am imagining Bane in a prison in an early scene in the movie (the prison he took over in the Caribbean kicking the crap out of someone with the rest of the inmates chanting for him to kill) That or it is being chanted by the aforementioned beater wearing henchmen and his cohorts as they watch that fight seen in the trailer. Orr maybe I'm way off. But I do think the chant is a sped up audio of "Bane Bane something something!"

    I predict Lady Gaga

    by Clarence_Boddickers_Optometrist

Will draw inspiration from Bane's mask/apparatus and show up at some awards show in something similar next summer. Also, not sure I'm sold on the whole look of Bane as of yet-Nolan in a way has painted himself in a corner with the whole realism approach, so the slightest miscalculation on appearance or costume can seem almost comical in the confines of such an environment. Shades of Hannibal Lecter, be interesting how they explain it, if they do at all...

Just watched the Avengers teaser. Looks fun & fluffy.

    by Quake II

Looks really cool. But FUN cool, not wicked cool like this Batman teaser. I feel more emotionally invested in the next Batman film. I think Avengers will be a great ride but it won't provoke any emotional highs and lows like TDKR. Simply put, Nolan knows how to stir up emotions (ala Spielberg) and he's getting better and better at it with every film. This teaser presents some grim, depressing tones and shows someone you care about in peril. We have no idea why Batman is staggering and weak but it's disturbing the way it's shot. Bane approaches him without any pause and that speaks volumes as to how bad ass this guy is. And Choppah, I disagree that a Catwoman shot is needed in this teaser. It would cheapen the tone and become another "hey look, Catwoman's in the movie!" The less I know, the better.

Pretty much ALL mainstream superhero comics from the big two looked like shit in the 90s. That's why I stopped buying them. I was only into indie books (Fantagraphics type o stuff), Vertigo, and manga for a good ten years plus. I only really started reading mainstream DC and Marvel comics again in the earlyish 00s (maybe right around the time Raimi's Spiderman came out I started realizing how much I missed the superheroes I grew up with and wanted to check them out again).

dursman2000 I knew Superman and Spider-Man would be brought up.

    by Quake II

And yes, they did make loads of money but TDK outgrossed them and continues to have much more crossover appeal. How many Alpha males have Spider-Man 2 sitting next to Black Hawk Down and Braveheart in their Blu-ray collection? Almost everyone I know has The Dark Knight on Blu, regardless of their background or tastes. It's a "must own" movie. The Spider films are just not that good when you revisit them. Superman doesn't count because it was the 1970's and it was literally the first big screen superhero film so EVERYONE went to see it. It was an event film that happened to turn out well.

No more falling pearls, please. But I think Nolan could get away with killing him. It would be a bold way to go out. Teaser is kind of crap, but it doesn't matter. I'm with Nolan on this until the end. I'm no superfan, and I think they are far from the 'perfect' films some superfans claim them to be, but perfection is overrated and they're pretty great and entertaining. I don't think Selina Kyle is going to be a villain.

    by Super Joker

I am thinking she will be Selina Kyle for the vast majority of the movie much like Harvey Dent was in Dark Knight. She will be the normal character that gets dragged into this madness in the same way Dent and Rachel were. I have a feeling she will be the one that helps Bruce get back on his feet after Bane has wrecked his life? Either way I can see them going back to Begins. Old an said something about going full circle and the idea of Batman having to retrain or go through even more training to defeat Bane sounds appropriate for the character. by corplhicks

    1) as he is backing off, batman looks tired, drained, like a fighter in round 10 who is exhausted, looks hard to keep his hands up even-- Bane is walking at him like it's round one 2) female looking form in background, possibly with hands over her mouth maybe? 3) Bane is freakin' huge 4) there is a good chance Batman will not survive this, or if he does he won't be able to fight crime anymore.

  • YES ! YES ! FIGHT DAMMIT! Before... he was fighting mobsters and lunatics. With all that training of course he's bound to win. But now... enter Bane.... Bruce is so screwed.

Could Ra's have also trained Bane?

    by Super Joker

Could Bane be the new head of the league of shadows? I remember reading about shooting locations in India and there has been reports of that Social Network guy playing a young Ra's. I am just wondering if Bane is the league of shadows head honcho now, and he's there to raze the city to the ground, just as Ra's set out to do. It would add weight and purpose to Bane's quest beyond doing it for sport - which was what The Joker was more about really. I like the idea of Bane being the destroyer of Gotham that Ra's wanted Bruce to be.

Anyone getting a Martyrs/Serbian Film vibe from this?

    by SK229

I don't know, it's just something that hit me with the color scheme, the ass whooping, the claim that that's someone filming it in the background. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nolan take the things that work from those film in the 'disturbing' department (meaning subtle things like color scheme, camera angles, jarring cuts, etc.) and marrying them to a mainstream movie where Batman and Gotham are brought to the depths of depravity. You know... in those kinds of movies, I'd always like to see Batman walk in and start taking people out, so maybe we're onto something. It's a child-like reflex, where you want justice to be served from a God-like figure. I've also always imagined it'd be funny, in the most tense, scariest moment of a Halloween film to have the T-Rex suddenly swoop in from behind a house, Jurassic Park style, and fucking chew up Michael Myers. Or Freddy... or any of 'em really... the biggest, baddest, killer of our imagination meets the biggest, baddest, eating machine in reality... and the reality is much, much worse.

Ledger's Joker would have his own movie

    by KilliK

with Batman,if he was still alive. What he achieved with his performance and take on that character was phenomenal. I am really curious to see how WB/Nolan will treat his character in this movie, because lets face it,without Ledger's performance and tragic death TDK wouldnt have become the critical and commercial hit that it was. And for that it is a sure bet they will somehow insert Joker in the sequel. So the question is: Will they honor Ledger's memory and his appearance in the movie will be done with the most respectful and modest care. OR they will act as the usual greedy bastards that they are and they will exploit Ledger's post-mortem fame in the most despicable way possible in order to attract as many fans and casual movie-goers as possible to go and watch TDKR? (ie the ad campaign will based heavily on the fact that Joker makes a cameo in the film or something like that, etc) Well we will find out in 2012 when the movie officially premieres.

    by Autodidact

Because they're all origin stories either for the hero or the villain. Rarely do we get one where the hero just saves the world in the middle of his career. That's what I want to see more of. Middle of the career movies. Not the "beginning of the story". Not "the end of it all". Just a good story about a superhero saving the world (or the day, or fighting for justice, anything but the need to have it be genesis/apocalypse).

Well, for me personally I think the answer to why I grow weary of superhero movies, lies within the genre itself. The sense of danger, the fear of failure, or the prospect of the hero actually losing the big fight, is almost never present. It can't be, can it? The hero always wins. Not only because it is in the nature of superheroes to do so, but because the industry would never kill off a potensial cash-cow for storytelling reasons. I mean, yeah, sometimes the bad guys are so evil that we think the good cannot possibly win, but usually, they do. Predictable, and hence, the opposite of exciting. The prospect of Nolans last Batman film maybe being the exception, is probably the only thing keeping me interested.

    *SPOILER* hospital scene

    by 2soon2eat

SPOILER Wayne pulls on a ski mask just before ducking in Gordon's hospital room. Sounds silly, but he's talking to gordon in a suit and a ski mask. I put this together after a shot fan him jumping out of the hospital room like that. Gordon may not know he's talking to Wayne. Also: The dude doing pushups is Wayne in some kind of prison. I'm guessing its a flash back considering that Liam is attached. Act III will probably be heavy with flash backs. ACT I: TDK ACT II: Batman Begins ACT II: The Dark Knight Rises The only way to control the League of Shadows is to become Ras Al Guhl....A "legend", Mr. Wayne

I think (read some of the other comments to) I would just like my superhero movies to be 'super' not 'realistic'. Even to a degree Batman, while I love Nolan's take, Batman's world is mental whereas the character is not...well ok he dresses like a bat to terrify and beat on criminals but as mad as that is it's feasible). The lack of cape (though I think I saw it in that last hammer throw shot) on Thor in the Avengers, you just know someone said 'It looks silly get rid of it!' and this is Joss Whedon, the guy who made silly out of Buffy on a regular basis and STILL pulled off some very good real feeling drama (Buffy's mum dieing is a good example incase your struggling). As said, it's time to close the door and walk away.

    connor187

    by The Fuck

Bane having a muzzle actually makes a lot more sense. Also plenty of information leading to the fact that Bruce will take some serious vacation time after his meeting with Bane. Who knows he'll travel the world again like in Begins, trying to lose Bane cause he knows where to find the bat.

  • Everything points to this and I think the Nolans wanted that in the first place. Halfway through the film Batman gets broken by Bane and fakes his death ala The Dark Knight Returns. Gotham thinks he's dead as does Gordon. Bruce goes into hiding all busted up but learns that Ra's is behind Bane so he rebuilds Batman from the ground up and rises to give hope to a Gotham that is crumbling from Bane's terrorizing of the city. Somewhere along the line, Gordon is injured at the hands of Bane so that is the context the middle part of the teaser evokes--Gordon in the hospital trying to convince Bruce to become Batman once again. And if that is true, then Gordon figures out Bruce is Batman somewhere along the line in the film.

    Year One solution

    by MegaBaz

Here's a possible solution as to how Gordon is talking to Bruce (as Batman) in the hospital. The fact no-one else seems to have suggested this makes me think my memory may be a little off, but i'm sure there was a scene in the Year One comic book (which served as a template for a lot of what Nolan did in Begins) where Gordon, not wearing his glasses, sees Batman with his mask off. Gordon says something like 'I can't see a damn thing without my glasses', leaving us afterwards with the great question of whether Gordon then really always knows that Batman = Bruce Wayne. Gordon isn't wearing his glasses in this trailer...

Bale perfecting his grumble/roar speak for the finale!

    by Onin Solstice

This is when Bale's patented battle cry/speech hits it's high note. The one thing Bale will leave behind to let people know he once played Batman.

  • ...SIX out of the 10 movies you mentioned coming out in 2012...are SEQUELS? ...and that every film in your '82 list...was original? THAT is the difference. 1982 was a banner year for incredible original movies - 2012 is going to be yet another year of studios simply churning out sequels. Understand the difference? By the way, you barely even touched upon the amazing films in '82 there. That year will always be an impossible one to beat. The documentary, "Dangerous Days" on the newest "Blade Runner" 4-disc set, has a great section where they talk about that year, and how "Blade Runner" got lost in the shuffle of so many great films (it happened to "The Thing" as well) - and at one point they show a crawl of all the now-classic films that came out that year, all basically aiming for the same audience, and the first time I saw it, I was kind of stunned - it was like, holy shit - almost every one of my favorite movies when I was growing up came out in the SAME year. LOL

  • Bane fights Batman, Batman is broken (presumably his back or something else). JGL's character, who is described as a Gotham Beat cop of sorts, is found by Bruce to be a worthy replacement and is trained to be the next Batman. Then the new Batman perhaps goes rogue, which forces Bruce (now recovered) to once again don his Batman suit and take down the new Batman. Sound familiar? Of course it does because it's the entire Knightfall arc in all of its glory. I mean all of the elements are there, from Bane to the Arkham explosion, to the rise of this new evil, to a cop being the replacement (wasn't Azrael's character a security guard at least) and so forth. It's a worthy storyline to follow "The Dark Knight" because how can one top a Joker movie and make it seem original at the same time? By Batman, instead of ultimately having to overcome villains, instead having to overcome somebody he trained. Great escalation imo. That may explain the Gordon hospital scene too, with Gordon being all bruised and bloodied. Perhaps he's talking about the new Batman beating Gordon up after they (he and the cops) tried to take him down?

I agree with you about Nolans bat films. I do think they're good, but not as good or as "realistic" nor as "faithful" as some people are trying to claim. 'The Dark Knight' is nowhere near as brilliant of a sequel as 'Batman Returns'; 'Returns' had so much going for it, from the idea that the Penguin is using politics to fight Batman, to the deep pyschological performances from Keaton and Pheifer (Their whole exchange near the end where they discover eachothers secrets was such a great character moment, beautifuly performed by both) ---it has it's flaws, but in my opinion, it's an extremeley underrated Batman film.

  • July 18, 2011, 8:14 p.m. CST

I can't share the love for BATMAN RETURNS, sorry.

    by DoctorWho?

Granted, it is VERY well acted. Personally, Burton always seems to fall about 20% short with me in ALL of his films. Love his style, art direction etc but 'some-thing' is always missing for me. I so want to love his films but about half way through the 3rd act, I just don't care anymore. <p> There is a big contingent of fanboy love for RETURNS though. With Nolan's films I think he brings more people to the screen who would normally be less inclined to see something so stylized and fantasy/gothic as Burton's vision. Hell, even my parents (in their 60's) can relate to the Nolan films, whereas Burton's film wouldn't even be a blip on their radar.

He's wearing the ski mask he used in Batman Begins and then using the Bruce Wayne voice because his vocals hurt after a Bane ass whooping. I like the idea of both of them being in hospital beds side by side, but there is someone clearly sitting in a chair in front of Gordon and his eyes are looking forward. Next point is that there is definitely a human figure dressed in white in that last scene. The figure is staring right at Batman and Bane, but there is zero movement. It could be a statue or it could be someone like Thalia or another Villain filming the encounter. That shot of the guy doing push ups in the prison cell looked more like Christian Bale than Tom Hardy.

I don't even like these movies. There are so many reasons. But, "Marvel won." That's a really goofy argument. I happen to think SPIDER-MAN 2 and IRON MAN are better movies than THE DARK KNIGHT. More fun. More exciting. Less brown. THE DARK KNIGHT, however, was a different thing altogether. You can brag all you want about THOR's IMAX-3D-inflated grosses. (Turns out, no one really cares, after all.) And, you can posit that Heath Ledger had some kind of Kurt Cobainian pull on The S#!tgeist. You can't prove it. Batman. Superman. Spider-man. Then...the rest of them. I think only the Russian Judge would give the gold medal to Marvel.

Danny Elfman's score for 'Batman Returns' was a great sequel score. He took the score from the first film, and made a more haunting, darker version of it. Well I don't think I would characterize it as "happy go lucky". But at that point in the journey if I've already suspended my disbelief about a, b and c...that I can go along with that premise. I've always found the criminal with a "heart of gold" to be a cop out. But one can arguably make the leap that it is possible that noble gestures can arise and triumph. <p> And that's the beauty of Nolan's message against the repugnant nihilism of The Joker. The Joker was crestfallen and Ledger conveyed the Joker's confusion quite well. The first time in the whole film where the Joker didn't have it all figured out and momentarily lost his certainty of his convictions.<p> I totally understand why you ay have a problem with that scene but it's know where near a deal breaker for me.

    by Jubba

so...because this is the 3rd nolan batman film, of course they're going to play it up as the final part of his trilogy...but who really says that things have to be told in a trilogy anyway? i can definitely see nolan coming back at us in a few years with a dark knight returns film - especially if he actually has the guts to break batman's back at the end of this one and put him out of commission for good..though, that'll pretty much ruin a surprise 4th film..might as well put a "to be continued" sign at the end. anyway, who says he has to stop at 3? not me. let's see gordon's daughter, as Robin, finish bain off (she could be a dark knight, too) and then nurse bruce back to health somehow fixing his spine with the riddler's future-ish technology, allowing him to have his crime spreee so that she can keep bruce healthy and recovering...while bruce tries to stop him she works against bruce's efforts for his own sake. hmmm...maybe not. but still, a 4th movie could kick ass seeing batman come back later in life.

    by redkamel

I'd say the part that got me the most excited was how Batman looked tired as shit and Bane was just marching up to kick some ass. I think this is going to be a solid villain. And I am pretty sure the guy in all white in the back was Dr. Hugo Strange.....I mean, what other Batman villain pretty much confirmed to be in the movie would be standing alone in the background wearing white ("Dr" colors)? I really wonder how its going to end....Nolan has shown he has balls in making these movies dark. It reminds of when they make graphic novels that are self contained, full stories with arcs, deaths, pacing etc etc. Previous Batman and other superhero movies remind of just a comic book, a single story one off, the city in danger etc etc.

    Burton et al

    by Colin62

Tim Burton has always said,"I wouldn't know a good script if it bit me in the ass." I'm not making that up. And I agree with him. That's why he can do Batman and then turn around and do Batman Returns. One was a solid script (Batman) and one was silly. The parade to clocktower sequence from Batman was just awesome. Batman Returns didn't have anything approaching that kind of action. I get what Burton was going for but Batman fighting the island of misfit toys is a swing and a miss. That's what Nolan has over Burton, he can recognize what's a genuinely interesting concept that will play well on screen and distinguish that from what plays as just stupid. Also Michael Keaton plays a better Batman than Christian, but Christian was born to play Bruce Wayne (and his Batman is pretty good too so he averages out better anyway). Nolan has taken from the Batman stories that which translates well to film (call it reality for lack of a better term but the screen is simply a different medium with different rules). And I am just ecstatic there's no Robin. I hate Robin. The invention of the "side-kick" is perhaps the dumbest notion in all of comics.

@Doctorwho? BUT there are two major inconsistencies

    by KilliK

with what Nolan tried to do with the two ferries sequence: 1.It conflicts with the so much acclaimed from the fans, realism of the movie. In real life, people wont sit down by their own and start quietly voting if they want to die or not. The instinct of survival is more keen to turn people into cold-blood murderers if it means that they will live to see the next day, rather than civilized democrats who vote for their existence. 2.The hospital sequence already proved Joker's point and made the ferries sequence completely unnecessary. It was clearly shown that the GC citizens were determined to kill an innocent man in order to save someone beloved to them. Which means that Joker had already won Batman in their morality debate,at least in a social level.

  • July 19, 2011, 4:38 a.m. CST

in the hospital sequence, the GC citizens tried to kill a man to save their own. That proves Joker's point that you cant trust the human nature. In the ferries sequence, the same GC citizens preferred to kill themselves than kill others. That disproves Joker's point that you cant trust the human nature. So not only we have a sudden and for no apparent reason, complete reversal in the GC citizens' attitude and the way of reacting in critical situations, but it also negates the already established concluson that Joker was right about the morality of people. 1.the same people react in an opposite way, in two completely similar situations. 2.we have a proof and a disproof of the same point. are the above movie facts characterized, beyond any doubt,as contradictions, yes or no? ps.dont throw me the argument that not all the GC citizens were the same and not the two situations were the exact same, etc. Batman and Joker were debating the moral issue with absolute numbers, not statistical ones. so spare me with this argument.

    Bane's mask- fear toxin inhaler?

    by zom-bot.com

if there is no 'venom' in Nolan's vision, what's Bane's 'power' going to be besides trained strength and conviction? what's with the mask? is it just to guard his teeth in a fight? not likely. it looks like a gas mask or rebreather...and the fear gas has shown up in many forms throughout both movies so far. i have a theory that bane is actually ADDICTED to it. he's peaked and now uses it for the adrenaline rush/strength that fear brings, but he has mastered the visual fear it creates too. it no longer has the fear effect on him, but gets him really amped regardless. he'd probably used it via Ra's for years during training to overcome his fears and weaknesses. this would explain why he seems fearless and unstoppable too.

but i'd say joker is Batman's polar opposite, whereas bane is more like an alternate/mirror of bats- i.e.- what would similar drive do in different circumstances? what would batman be without morality or his 'one rule'...what would batman be without hesitation or fear. (i still say Bane will have used some strain of the fear toxin for years of training to toughen himself to be fearless, yet still get the physical effects (adrenaline, etc) of fight or flight response. that's probably as close to 'venom' as we'll get, and that's as it should be. it also ties in with the possibilty that Bane trained with Ra's and may explain the mask/breathing apparatus he wears.

  • July 19, 2011, 2:35 p.m. CST

i dont disagree but i have faith on Nolan this time

    by KilliK

besides the studio knows that a sexy CW will be a major attraction for the male audience,so they will point it out to Nolan and they will expect from him to deliver an ultra-hot Hathaway-Catwoman. And dont forget that Nolan left Ledger to deliver his own take on the Joker character almost by himself,so i expect to do the same with Hathaway. Also Hathaway is a woman and she understands the sex appeal of the character and its popularity among the male geeks. So she will definitely want to deliver the goods, both as a woman with an ego and as an actress with a career in a big blockbuster movie. Besides the rumor is that Hathaway is working her body hard for this role and the acrobatics that it demands. so unless Nolan is ultra-gay at directing sexy women ,it means that Hathaway's Catwoman is going to be a delightful treat for our lustful eyes. well at least that's what i believe (and hope) to be the case.

    Boat scene

    by shitstorm23

While I agree it does bring the movie down greatly, I think the whole point was a contradiction. The Joker is trying to say you can never trust people to do the right thing, that when things go wrong they will do terrible things. That is true of SOME people, as evidenced by them trying to kill the guy at the hospital. However, Batman's point is that not everyone is like Joker, which is proven by both groups not blowing up the other boat. Which shows the dichotomy of human behavior and alludes to the enitre Batman/Joker relationship. <p> While not really touched on in the movie, Batman and Joker are contradictions. Both are crazy as all fuck, but one swings to the morally good side while the other laughs at morality. <p> I really cannot see this being better than TDK. Joker is Batman's villian. Batman has faced smarter & stronger villians than Bane, sometimes teamed up together. Bane is cool and has a cool story, although I always liked the idea of him being Latino, but he's no Joker. I still hold out hope that they can come up with a good story though.

Aww, you poor stupid cunt. First off, I never said anything about hating Nolan. I like Nolan's films just fine, although he has yet to make a film as flawless as 'Memento' --- I didn't even say I hated his Bat films; I just said that they are OVERRATED. And yes, they are. Funny how you point out the "I'm Catwoman, hear me roar" line, as if 'Batman Begins' wasn't loaded with fucking ham lines and overacting (The old man explaining the water mains blowing was worse then anything in a fucking Joel Shumacher Bat film) I like 'The Dark Knight', but it wasn't the great masterpeice you're making it out to be. It's funny when douche's like you nit pick other movies, but when someone does it to one you love, you can come up with all of these cute little excuses and wannabe insults. Yes, 'The Dark Knight' is full of flaws. I'm not going to say that 'Batman Returns' doesn't have any flaws, because it certainly does, but I will say that it's an underrated film, and DOES deserve just as much, if not more, praise then 'The Dark Knight' --- it's not the gothic set peices that make 'Return' appeal to me, it's the story, characterizations and performances. I think there is a lot of script stuff, and acting stuff that is overlooked because of Burton's style. And speaking of which, there is nothing wrong with early Tim Burton movies. He's not one of my favorite directors, but the simple fact is that he is a very talented filmmaker. Sure, he hasn't made anything worthwhile in a long time, but neither has James Cameron, who was at one point one of the best filmmakers in the industry. What bothers you the most here, you cock sucking, Christoper Nolan nut hugger... is it that *GASP* not everyone believes that Chris Nolan is a fucking filmmaking god? We KNOW what they were trying to say, We KNOW that it was meant for the Joker to "Finally" be wrong, but that's not what I or others are trying to say! It's as simple as this: In this sequence, people WEREN'T acting realistically. In a situation like that, there would be rioting, panic and people would be fighting over the detonators. If you try to tell me that career criminals and convicts, who have never had a problem with taking lives of others beforehand, are not going to make an attempt to save their own lives by blowing up the other ship, then I call bullshit. If you're going to try to tell me that the ordinary citizens of Gotham, who had previously gone ape shit in attempt to kill Coleman Reese to prevent the hospital from blowing up, are just going to sit around and wait for these criminals, people who they KNOW are responcible for countless deaths of innocent people, to make the first move... then I call bullshit. Survival would have kicked in, and one of the ferry boats would have been blown sky high. To say that not a single person on each boat would act, and wait around for the other side, is stretching this "reality" bullshit you guys are trying to sell with Nolan's films. And this is just one example of how flawed 'The Dark Knight' was. I'm more then willing to take a leap of faith and suspend disbelief, but let's cut out the whole 'The Dark Knight' was perfect b.s. It'd not even close to being one of Nolan's best films... Speaking of which, now that I'm thinking about it... gotta love this site; the same people who cry for more originality in Hollywood and are oh so against remakes, prequels, sequels and reboots are the same people who are fucking gaga over a reboot series... fucking ironic.
