EW Has Loads Of New AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Photography!!

I am – Hercules!!

Emma Stone and Andre Garfield look so cute as Gwen and Peter!

But I am in the geek minority, I suppose, in not wanting a spider-bite to give teen Peter Parker the ability to build wrist-shooters.  We'll see if the webbing comes out of his wrists, or if he mixes the stuff up in his basement.

Marc Webb ("(500) Days of Summer") directs from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt ("The Rundown," "Zodiac"), Alvin Sargent ("Spider Man 2," "Spider-Man 3") and Steve Kloves (many "Harry Potter" movies).

Sony shoots it out July 3, 2012.

    People think Gwen knows...

    by professor murder

But there is no proof in these photos that she does. The one of her cleaning him up shows NO spiderman suit anywhere in the shot and the shot with them together with his suit on is an obvious promo shot, not a still from the movie.

People forget that Spider-man is actually one of the smarter characters in the Marvel Universe. (Spider-man included.)Peter Parker is a boy genius prior to the bite. The bite does give him some instinctual understanding of how to create the chemical that turns into webbing, but the webshooters are his own design.

    by knowthyself

Peter Parker isn't just a genius he's albert freaking Einstein. It's just too good of an invention that's why it was never believable that he made it up on his own. No kid his age is THAT smart.

The pattern, fabric, and overall visual design of the suit makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I'll reserve judgement until the trailer comes out next week, but lord knows I'm not impressed so far. I'm all in favor of a reboot, but come on- this suit is ludicrous.

    by Gene Cowan

I was skeptical at first, but that was probably when all I had seen Garfield in was Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Changed my mind after I watched Never Let Me Go. However, after seeing Topher Grace in S-M 3, it drives me crazy that he wasn't cast as Pete. He just has the right "attitude" in my opinion. Needs to be a wise-cracker.

    Behold, Generic Bug-Man!

    by R.

So, the package of arachanid abilities he received did not include the one ability that sets spiders apart from virtually all other bugs? Super strength, wall-sticking abilities, and an awareness of when giant rolled-up newspapers are in the vicinity could be from almost any bug. Mechanical web shooters = American automobiles on Cybertron. It might be canon, but it's stupid.

I like the two leads, but there are problems...

    by fanboy71

He has his shoes on while clinging to the roof of the train. His powers would not work through thick rubber soles. It sure looks as though Gwen knows his secret. At the bottom of the pic where she is cleaning blood off of him, it sure looks like the suit is rolled up as if he has pulled the top down. Webshooters. I have grown into the idea of organic web shooters. Even the comics have went that route. A teenager with no money could not possibly build something like that. And there is no way in hell he could build a suit like that either. Does Spider-Man get an endorsement deal when he starts wrestling? That's the only possible explaination.

But I rewatched Raimi's first Spiderman, and it still geeks me out. Raimi nailed it in quite a lot of ways, like the geeky Parker, and his transition from zero to hero. Web Shooters

    by Chad Kuhns

I'm betting the web shooters are a Dr. Connor invention. I'm willing to suspend the belief if Peter is the creator, if only because it does stay true to the source material. The suit looks pretty rigid, and definitely has that Ultimate Spider-Man feel. It'll be interesting to see what it looks like in motion come trailer time. Regardless, it's the Lizard, and how he comes off and the story behind him that will make or break this movie for me.

  • And as for the mechanical webshooters vs organic webshooters: it's a movie based on a comic book. Come out of your parents' basement once in a while.

Here's a list of things I don't like about this movie so far:

    by Larry Knowles

Andrew Garfield seems miscast Spidey Outfit seems like it's trying to hard to be cool/different Web shooters - stupid. The other movies got this right. If you're going to have a mutated spider-man than have him shoot webs. It's unrealistic to think a high-school kid is going to develop these amazing mechanical shooters. Don't buy it. Love Emma Stone. Love Gwen Stacey. But don't love Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey. Another miscast. Uncle Ben is back can mean only that this is a retelling of the origin story. That's dumb. Just move on. This movie will not do very well at the box office. Hear me now and listen to me later.

  • Sean Faris?

  • Just the fact that the kid more closely resembles the comics I remember, and that they use way more practical FX and have a dynamite cast, I think this is gonna be good. I do not expect it to do as well due to the fact that people are probably not thinking of rushing out to see yet another Spiderman this early, esspecially with all the glut of new super heros to choose from. I love Sam Rami's work, and I liked his spidey-esspecially #2, but the CGI web slinging around the city looked like a video game avatar to me.

    Mechanical Webshooters are UNREALISTIC!

    by Larry Knowles

Organic webshooters are consisted with powers bestowed by a radioactive spider bite! Mechanical Webshooters are unrealistic becuase they want us to believe that a nerdy highschool boy would simply create this revolutionary invention! Please. Unless it was established that the spider bite also gave Parker an unparalleled understanding of mechanical engineering then I feel this is unrealistc. Look, kids. Here's the deal.

    by Snow Is Fun

The suit looks kind of stupid. Aside from that, everything we've seen and heard about this movie looks and sounds GREAT. Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker? Looks GREAT. Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy? Looks GREAT. Mechanical web shooters? Looks GREAT. The Lizard as a villain? Sounds GREAT. The Amazing Spider-Man as the title? Sounds GREAT. Marc Webb as the director? Sounds GREAT. That suit? Looks STUPID. And it's not even THAT stupid-looking. Could be so much worse. Sure, the silver booty things are borderline criminal, but man. I'm still pumped for this thing. You should be, too. And even if you're not pumped, you shouldn't be pissed. Or scared. Or angry. Or anything like that.

    by Larry Knowles

I'm glad to see that you have such strong emotions about this. Some other talkbackers and I are putting together a petition to have them change this part of the movie. From our understanding, it would cost the production team about $500k to go back and reshoot these parts of the movie and update it with organic webshooters. We feel these reshoots will make a better movie and will ultimately result in much larger profits for the studio. Would you like to sign our petition?

Secret of the web fluid ...

    by Tindog42

In the early days of the comic there was a special one page on Spider-Man's costume and equipment. It mentioned that the web fluid was produced from a formula using compounds only Peter Parker knew (being a top level chem major). The speculation was that involved materials actual produced by Parker. Blood maybe but more likely saliva, urine and feces. Logical but a bit much for a 60's mainstream comic.

  • July 14, 2011, 3:33 p.m. CST

Um. Where do I even begin.

    by Astronut

First off, I have a thorough knowledge and understanding of Spider-Man as a character from the beginning (Amazing Fantasy #15) all the way up to the 80's when I stopped blowing $$ on comics and started blowing it on getting laid. The character, Peter Parker, made his own web shooters. He made them. They weren't '' organic '' until James Cameron got the idea for his version/script. So if anything, the web shooters should be true to the freaking comics — decades of them — rather than having them in his body. Call me old school, I don't give a shit, but they are mechanical devices, that is what they were depicted as for DECADES.

  • Which is more believable... A pornstar shooting a giant load with his natural dick. OR A pornstar strapping on a mechanical rubberdong and releasing an unholy load over everyone at the party. I like my Spiderman to be organic...just like I like my pornstars.

  • Noooooooo.......

    Artificial Webbing = Not Poor

    by Hagakure

Personally, I never really cared for the mechanical webshooters only because part of what made Peter Parker 'Peter Parker' was that he was always having money problems. The fact that this kid had money problems and yet he was at home mixing up a synthetic glue that would have made him a millionaire overnight if he had gotten a patent for it is just a little crazy. (For a kid who was supposed to be brilliant, he didn't have much of a mind for business.)

Or, let's say he doesn't want to go the evil route, he could * still * make a fortune off of his abilities via show business etc.... see where I am going with this? The fact that he doesn't run out and file a patent and become a millionaire from the technology is no more '' unbelievable '' than him not taking advantage of his powers by becoming a movie star or what have you.

Not going to judge much based off of production stills

    by Kammich

I love the Raimi trilogy; the first film came out when I was 14 years old and dramatically influenced some of the interests(film, comics) that I would carry with me for the rest of my life. that trilogy will always have a special place on my DVD shelf, even if the films themselves haven't aged pristinely. but I'm not against a "reboot." Webb is a bit of an unknown quantity as a director but I loved his last film. the casting of the 3 leads seems spot-on, especially Andrew Garfield. I really can't judge anything, though, until I see the story and the characters in motion. the trailer will go a long way to demonstrating the tone of the movie, and thats the most important thing to me. you can't decipher anything about the tone of the film from production stills. also, re: the webshooters... its very funny to me that the single biggest complaint about Raimi's film in 2002 were the organic webs(whole websites dedicated to boycotting the film because of it), and now the single biggest complaint about Webb's film is the mechanical web-shooters. it shows that you simply cannot win when it comes to the geek community.

    Looking forward to this movie..

    by steverogers5

Yeah I don't like the changes to the suit..(who does?) but everything else looks great. We're finally get a tall good looking Peter Parker much like the swingin dude John Romita and so many geat artists afterward drew him as in the comic books. One of the problems with the casting of MacGuire is yeah you can have him potray the geeky bespectacled loser he was for the first half of Amazing Fantasy #15. (His origin tale) But not the charismatic, handsome girl getter that he became for oh, the 1000es of Spiderman comics afterwards. You see Peter's problem after the Spider bite wasn't getting girls to notice him, (Both Gwen and MJ took an instant shine to him..) but in keeping them afterwards, as beating the crap out of the villain of the week tended to get in the way of that. Certainly Garfield from what I've seen him in, looks like he would be more appealing than Raimi & MacGuires shambling, stalker boy loser that they had him as. Not to mention that Garfield's style of delivering his lines seems much more akin to the smart, quick witted Spidey of the comics, rather than Tobey's slow, drawling, half asleep to the point of almost seeming retarded, moron! And I like that this Peter will have his scientific smarts back. There was an graphic novel (The Living Monolith one) back in the 80es where Captain America, with most of the avengers out of town, needs help in tracking down an abducted Fantastic Four. When he uses the avengers computer to narrow down the super powered people the avengers could trust, that had enough scientific smarts to use Reed Richards lab, the computer lists Spider-Man as the top candidate, which Cap has absolutely no problem with. This is something that people used to these overated movies forget. In the comics Peter Parker is a scientific genius, who sadly hasn't had much opportunity to devote himself to it, beacuse he has been too busy fighting about 90% of the marvel universe's villains. (Seriously who has met more villains than Spidey over the years?) The comics over the last year have finally been starting to address this, having him work in a lab, coming up with all sorts of cool gadgets. maybe the films down the line will do something similar.. I really don't get people who say Spiderman shouldn't have any scientific smarts. (It's like those who think batman shouldn't have any scientific/engineering smart because he's spent too much time travelling the world to have a 'proper' education.) It's comic books. Peter shares a city with geniuses who can build time machines, space rockets, and interdimensional modes of transport. In that kind of world, It's not inconceivable that he could invent the web shooters. As for affording them, that was where the bugle came in, and his getting quick cash for photos of himself in action. That tended to be what he spent his money on. (Or looking after his aunt There were comics where he had to do without web fluid because he's not sold enough photos, or spent the money on medicine for his aunt) Bottom line, I can't wait for this movie. Suit aside, it looks like this will be much closer to the Spiderman I grew up reading about in the comic books. And hey it wasn't like all the suits in the previous movies were okay. Look how Raimi messed up the Black Suit, turning it into a dull grey version of the blue and reds. And let's not even get into the mess of the Green Goblin..(Shudder!)

    Not to mention

    by Kammich

James Cameron's idea of the organic webs was just a very thinly veiled analogy for Peter cumming in his sleep(he wakes up the next morning with his pants and bed sheets covered in sticky webs). it was one of many juvenile things about Cameron's extremely misguided Spider-man treatment(s). I love Cameron's movies for their spectacle, but I'll forever be grateful that he didn't get anywhere near the "Spider-man" property, because he doesn't seem to understand it in the slightest.

I've already seen 75% of this movie.

    by electroaddict

I looked through the underwhelming slide-show of pictures: 1) Uncle Ben is alive, so he'll have to be killed all over again to teach Peter a lesson. Don't worry, that's not a long story (sarcasm). 2) Peter designs a prototype suit that looks bland and laughable before envisioning the classic suit we know of today... I hope that journey eats up a whole 20 minutes like it did last time. 3) Peter throws some jerk up against a locker at school during a fit of anger, unaware of how strong he's become with his new powers. "It just won't be Flash this time, so the kids will think it's a whole new scene." 4) Peter has a long, crazy transformation scene and Ben + May think he's "acting strangely." Look at all that food Peter's planning to eat... that's hilarious! (sarcasm). I haven't seen this movie yet, but I've already seen 75% of it. Fill in the rest of this "paint-by-numbers" set-up with a different villain and MAYBE I'll rent it when it's released on DVD- and fast forward to the parts I HAVEN'T seen.

Swinging from rooftops with his ass

    by Tomarru

How about this, he has both. You fuckers want organic, done, he can shoot web from his ass. Not very fucking practical but much in line with the abilities from a spider and very much akin to the venture brothers version. However, to add some fucking usefulness to it other than swinging from rooftops by his ass he uses the fluid he secretes in his mechanical shooters on his wrists. Fuck sake people, organic shooters are just as contrived as mechanical, he just happens to have it on his wrists and it doesnt tire him out while using it? Wheres the downside. As for spidey 2, it was a one off, his powers went wonkey at just the wrong time, you want his powers to be continuously unreliable just so the dramatic tension can be relied upon?

    Web Shooters

    by D_T

So we finally get the mechanical shooters after years (and 3 movies, and apparently a change in the comics?) of the organic version which I ultimately dug on (like people have pointed out - spider powers = shooting webs). A couple of misc thoughts: Maybe they're developed by someone else (Conners)? I recall the comic having Spiderman lug around extra web cartridges, I wonder if these will have limited use? Maybe - and I'm kind of going way on this one - it's some kind of *combination* of mechanical and organic? Like he generates the web product and these devices just control it and provide a propellant mechanism? I like some of what I see, the suit is a little fruity, but static pics of superhero costumes always look a little goofy. Get it moving and in the right light, some post-production, it'll look better.

    by Pipple

Fuck yes, webshooters, finally. to address you guys saying a kid can't build this kind of tech and that he should have all of a spider's powers, not just the wall clinging. Well he's still got 2 eyes and only four limbs after the bite. It's long been established that parker is "augmented" by the spider bite, meaning he's been enhanced by it, not completely changed. sheesh and actually now that I think about it, look up a guy named Geohot on wiki and learn about the stuff he pulled while still in high school, now maybe that's not up there with webshooters but child prodigies is not some new thing... take into account that this is a fictional world and not ours and the webshooters fit just fine. plus no one had a problem with them until the stupid original spidey movies came out so get over it already. I kinda like the costume, i just hope they explain how he made it this time instead of it just happening to be some custom made shit he must have spent a fortune on... other than that, I'm hopefull that garfield's going to be hilarious as spidey. No more mopey macguire... turning spidey emo, felt like i was watching batman... come on... topher grace ran circles around him in sm3 and he wasn't even trying... oh just copy topher, garfield.

Are ridiculous. During the Raimi movie you bitter nerds complain about how he gave Pete organic webshooters "Whaaaaaaa that's not how it is in the comics whaaaaaaaa" and now that a different Spidey movie comes along and he DOES get the mechanical webshooters (which is how the character has been in the comics SINCE THE CHARACTER WAS INVENTED) it's "Whaaaaaaa that's different than the Raimi movies Whaaaaaa!!!!" Ugh. There's no pleasing you. Peter Parker is a genius. This is well established in the comics; he's right up there with Reed Richards. HE builds the web shooters by himself because, yeah, he really is that smart. Having Peter build his own web shooters shows how intelligent he is, which is an important bit of the character that was pushed to the background in the other movies. Yeah, Pete was a nerd, but he wasn't a genius. This is a good move and, like everything else I've heard about this movie, it seems to point in the direction of this film being pretty damn awesome.

It is the dumbassest of arguments to claim that organic webshooters make more sense than mechanical. Both are complete and utter fiction, but the mechanical taps into the original idea. Parker fucks with the fluid mixture to help combat certain enemies from time to time... to counter high heat (ie; Molten Man), to stick better to slick surfaces, increase tensile strength, etc. Organic shooters came about through Camerons concept and Raimi's execution. Thats it. You comic book n00bs who just got out of diapers have no idea WTF you're talking about with your baseless fucking arguments. It's been there for decades, 40+ YEARS of comics. supposedly Sony were the ones that continually nixed Dylan Baker becoming The Lizard in a Raimi film, stating they couldn't market a villain that "had no face." if I'm remembering correctly, it was then--and only then--that Raimi went back to the drawing board and developed the (admittedly terrible) idea of the Vulture and Vulturess. but yeah, I'm pretty sure Raimi lobbied pretty hard for the Lizard. and if the Doc Ock hospital scene in Spider-man 2 is any indication, I bet Raimi could've done something really special with The Lizard.

It wouldn't surprise me if Raimi just said "fuck it" and made it easy for them to change gears. Giant 70s web-shooters

    by Nem_Wan

The TV Spider-Man also had a utility belt. I think the web-shooters were so big because they really could shoot out a cable on camera. Either that or they wanted them to be big enough to be believable technology for the 1970s. Really, that show deserves props for, in a 1970s way, trying to make things realistic sort of anticipating Nolan's philosophy with Batman. What other live-action Spider-Man was filmed in the flesh, not a special effect, actually climbing the actual Empire State Building? None I bet, ever before, ever since, or ever again.

I think the suit is a terrible design, as far as all the cuts into the red, the silver booties etc (why fix what ain't broke?) i think marc webb will probably do a good job of the romance and slight humour spidey is supposed to have (but if they change too much of the origin, ugh) I think the mechanical web-shooters are pretty cool. I'm really excited to see what they might do with the Lizard and if there will be, maybe, another unspoken villain surprise.

I was a HUGE fan of the 70s Spider-Man and Captain America movies, but looking back, my gawd was that some cheesy shit. I think they used swimming goggles for Spider-Mans eyes. lol

    I prefer organic shooters

Just so we don't have to see any scenes of him inventing and building the mechanical ones. Because I don't give a flying fuck about the shooters! Raimi's was good, what, did they show a 5 second clip of him discovering he could shoot webs? Perfect. Move on. NEXT SCENE GO. My only complaint about this Spidey constume is that it looks a bit grungy because of the texture.

    by elsewhere

Because believe it or not, Spider-Man can be done better. As for the costume, yeah it's questionable, but this is more or less an origin story so it needs to look rough and have room to evolve. It gives the fans something to look forward to with each passing movie.

Doesn't matter if organic shooters are more realistic.

    by Nainz

The whole fucking point of the mechanical shooters is that PETER was a BOOKWORM that was smart enough to make the webshooters. The fact that he was smart enough to make them says a lot about the character. If anyone else had been bitten they wouldn't be Spider-Man, they would just be a super-strong guy who could stick to walls.

    by Johnno

I don't mind redesigns in general... but this one is just terrible! How?!!! I'm really hoping it'll be the case where Spidey Begins goes through several costume redesigns until in the end we end up with the classic suit at the very end of the movie after this one gets destroyed to shit. At least Gwen Stacy looks nice... I'm optimistic for the movie overall... but that costume is hideous...

Peter made the web shooters by himself in the comics. They were mechanical until 2006-2007 when Marvel changed them to organic. They were changed back into mechanical when Marvel undid the Spidey/MJ marriage.

Someone please explain to me why we have to endure yet another origin story when there are 10,000 interesting Spidey stories to tell??

  • And it's not even one bad costume design. It's more like four different bad costume designs colliding in a train wreck of terribleness. It's not the little round textural stuff. It's the overall laughably bad lack of any cohesion, or the slightest bit of good taste or aesthetics, for that matter. It's just a horrible pile of unnecessary busy-ness that doesn't fit together into any greater whole. Really. It's just about the most awful costume I've ever seen in a superhero film. Looks hideous from every angle. It's so far off the mark that I'm flabbergasted as to how it was chosen and allowed to see the light of day. It's nothing but dreadful. The actors look great, though. The lead is a good lookalike for the Romita Parker. But all the nice in the world hasn't yet answered the question, "why?"

    by THX1968

I hope I'm wrong, but deep down I know that I am not. I hope to be proven wrong, but I know without doubt that I will not be. This movie has been made for all the wrong reasons. Every single decision behind this film has been very, very poor. The suit is absolutely terrible. Garfield isn't rocking me at all. Marc Webb? No offense, but the guy barely has a filmography. This is a final stab at cash before an agreement expires. That's it. Pure and simple. It will be the last Spidey flick we see for awhile, I'm sure. Maybe Marvel Studios will give it back to Raimi and we can finally see the awesomeness of a Malkovich Vulture sans Hathaway Vulturess. Maybe a slick cameo by the Tinkerer. Yeah, that would get me jazzed. This one will be a strange footnote in Spidey cinematic history. Kinda like the TV show - a head scratching oddity.

I fear that ship for Raimi has sailed, though, after they mutinied him on an island where he was forced to tie two big turtles together to float to mainland (or so I heard). I hear he's gotten island fever now and is pimping his original property of The Evil Dead to be remade. This is all Sony's fault. I have to admit, these pictures have gotten me excited for this as much as I want it to tank just to show Sony for fucking Raimi over.

I'm not paying to see this in a theatre. Just because of the suit. When the aesthetics are that fucked, there's no reason to see it on a big screen. And seriously, that suit is indefensible. When it first leaked and there was an uproar, they made an effort to conceal it in the poster. It almost seemed like they might have been rethinking it. Apparently not. Or they did rethink, but somebody in charge was adamant that the costume be as shitty as possible. If that's the case, then the whole movie is doomed. By the way, does anybody know if it still looks like spiderman has pissed himself? I didn't see any photos that showed whether or not his crotch is still painted black.

I`ve been rooting for an Ultimate Spiderman reboot since the second movie. For all the love Raimi seems to have, he comepletely forgot what made Spidey so great. Macgruire`s neutered version has always been annoying, but Dunst`s MJ was the exact opposite of what she was. Doc Ock becomes remorseful?! So glad they are going back to the roots, and attempting to make a faithful version. Someone mentioned it before, but maybe they`re trying to make Spidey play nice with Avengers for the inevitable crossover everyone will clamour for.

    by Keith Maniac

Is how i feel about this, just dumb struck (not a new experience). I dont think its going to be a bad film, i think its just a shame that the studios just dont think that we as an audience have any lasting association with, or attachment to the previous cast in the Raimi films. The attitude seems to be they were just place keepers, as opposed to actors who really made those characters worthy.

Webshooters are CANON for 48 YEARS!!!

    by Jay Eyler

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but Amazing Spider-Man has had web shooters since 1963! Never did his webbing come from his body. Ever. Until less than 10 years ago. The fact that Toby McGuire's Spidey is the one that younger people grew up with (and was great) does not make that film's choice to change the 40 years of continuity accurate. They are calling this movie Amazing Spider-Man. This is the term always used to describe the original Lee/Ditko Spider-Man, as opposed to the "Utlimate" or "Noir" versions which are alternate modernizing but not "real" versions of the Marvel flagship. Fans for decades accepted the wrist webbing because we had to. Now it's the little boys' turn. The real Spider-Man uses webshooters, period. Still think the rest of the costume sucks, seeing as how they're using the Amazing brand.

  • July 15, 2011, 3:03 a.m. CST

Why does everybody keep saying this looks good?

    by Eli_Cash

Even apart from the costume, it looks crap. The director is a romcom guy. The lead is another sensitive introverted kind of actor, just like mcguire. He will probly do the shy outcast weirdo rather than the nerdy bookworm, and like toby he will probably never be able to pull off the smartass alter ego. Raimi's first spiderman had too much love story to it, and I'm willing to bet that this movie is pretty much gonna be a teen romance drama with a little bid of superhero action, and probably conforming to the generic comic movie plot. Its shaping up to be awful.

  • July 15, 2011, 3:05 a.m. CST

    by catlettuce4

I don't understand why this is being made, or what they hope to achieve. Every new thing released about it just turns me off more. It's mind boggling to me why they didn't just continue with another sequel after the Raimi stuff... he set up Gwen and the Lizard for them... Peter and MJ not necessarily on good terms anymore... and now they are starting completely over yet basically setting it all up the same way? Aunt May and the Connors had far better casting before, too. It makes no sense!

Plenty of reasons not to watch this

    by The StarWolf

    - It's yet, still another unnecessary remake. - Peter looks wrong. Too tall, too imposing. Macguire was fine. - Sally Fields looks much too young and too good a shape to be frail Aunt May. The one in the Raimi movies was perfect. - They clearly don't know the character. See the shot of him wall crawling on the ceiling ... with his SHOES on?! - Costume looks terrible. - I was a fan of SPIDER-MAN long before the Raimi movies but I applauded the change to organic web shooters precisely because the mechanical ones make Peter out to be far to smart to be perpetually broke. "He's a hero" people say? Nonsense. His sense of responsibility also extends to his family, yet Aunt May was continuously on the verge of bankruptcy, something Peter couldn't use that genius of his to raise a tidy sum? Ridiculous. It's just bad writing and there's already far too much of that in movies, thank you. - Oh and, it's yet, still another unnecessary remake. I'll pass.

  • Is there a long list of practical applications for a synthetic glue that dissolves within an hour? Spidey's webbing is only temporary - otherwise the New York skyline would be a mess of webs.

  • I don't care if the new Spidey is the greatest film ever made. This homo Webb made the truly horrific 500 Days of Summer, and for that he gets Spidey? And there was no need to reboot, Raimi was up for another one.

  • web shooters make A LOT more sense than spider puss coming DIRECTLY out of your wrists! Please... this shouldn't even be a rabid-ass debate.

    by Fawst

I got a FAR better vibe from those EW shots than I did from the original teaser featuring the WTC. FAR better vibe. Emma Stone is just so god damn cute/hot, she already elevates this film above the originals. I haven't followed this version at all other than I knew that he had the mechanical slingers (which look great) and that it was Gwen, not MJ. So what's the deal with the villain in this one? Who is it? I'm guessing it's that Rhys Ifans they had a couple photos of, but who does he play? Are they going Green Goblin again? Good lord, could we actually get a decent Green Goblin comic-inspired outfit this time?!

Why does Aunt May look like a crazy homeless woman?

    by zyuray2

  • Can't please anyone. And I feel old remembering these contradictory debates over the years. Like the X-Men costumes -- fans hated the black leather costumes in the Brian Singer films and now I actually heard some fans complain about the yellow costumes (a great homage to the originals) in the First Class prequel. For the record, I think the mechanical web shooters are the best -- and easier to market as toys!!! Peter Parker is a boy genius, deal with it. He can't make a fortune from his brilliance because he lacks social skills (except when he puts on the Spidey mask, sort of like many other young kids who are more outgoing and confident behind an online avatar).

    Raimi loss of ability

    by Katet19

That was horrendous, the spider bite changes him on a genetic level the abilities are not connected to his state of mind. That whole impotence/loss of confidence bull shit was horrendous. As far as Peter Parker's intelligence and ability to build web shooters goes, use Iron Man as a reference and a universe within the films that people seem to buy. Tony Stark is a genius/was a boy genius, Peter Parks is essentially second only to Stark and Reed Richards in the intelligence department. If Stark is that brilliant why not parker? Yes it's a revolutionary web fluid compound but he's 15 when he develops in and is not interested in prfit or renown. Currently in the comics he works for a cutting edge lab and lends his ingeniously little inventions to scientific applications.

Scratchmonkey - think about it ...

    by The StarWolf

In the minutes since you posted, I can think of the following application for the webbing: 1 - Life saving replacement for battlefield/accident scene stitches. It needs only last until the victim gets to a proper operating room. 2 - Temporary structural integrity maintenance in unstable buildings (following earthquakes, fires, bombings) to allow emergency personnel access without risking it collapses on them. 3 - Non-lethal restraints to catch fleeing suspects. And this is just in a couple of minutes. I'm certain there are other perfectly good uses. The stuff really would be worth millions to the patent owner.

Of all the things to shortchange this movie on, I don't think Andrew Garfield is one of them. He's shown way more range in his young career than Tobey Maguire's "introverted emo" ever really could. Just watch him in something like the Red Riding Trilogy, where he plays a hard-drinking, foul-mouthed, womanizing journalist. Or even "Lions for Lambs" where he played a cocky little prick who was too smart for his own good. Two totally different roles, both of which display some excellent range. I think he's got the potential to NAIL the role(s) of Parker and Spider-man, but a lot of that will come down to the script as well as the direction of Webb.

when you can reboot it and make it for cheaper? It's not like this is the biggest fucking money making franchise (comprising 3 films that broke all records) with beloved characters played by certain actors that audiences around the world has gotten accustomed to and fallen in love with. Nooooo, not the situation at all. It's like that time when Sam was given that note to make Spider-Man sparkle in the sunlight and Sam said, "Fuck you, asshole." Sam was clearly in the wrong. When the note was given for Peter to go back to high school in order for him to be in an angsty environment, Tobey said in true Spider-Man fashion, "Slim chance, Fatty!" The executive threw his donut down and said, "Listen here, son, I've about had it with your smart mouth. Who do you think you are, SPIDER-MAN????" Tobey got up, stepped on the donut, and webswung away. He left a note, "Regards, from your former neighborhood Spider-Man". He was never seen again. Sam took the opportunity to tell the 27 year old executive, "Say hi to your mom for me" and drove away in his 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88. Kirsten Dunst sat there alone with the executive in the room. "Please don't rape me, or I'll tell Mom." And that was the tale of how the legend of Spider-Man died.

    web fluid patent

    by hulkiest

There was an early Lee Ditko comic (I'm gonna guess and say Amazing Spiderman 18) where Peter, desperate for money, tries to sell his web fluid idea to some stuffy scientists but because it only lasts an hour they don't want it. Yes, it's kinda convenient that he wouldn't refine it and all and make a million, but they did cover the issue and you know, since Spidey's concern is making up for Uncle Ben's death, it sort of makes sense. I for one didn't like the organic idea only because he can't really run out unless he's depressed. I prefer the lock and load approach that the comics had. It's always fun as he falls and has to scramble to load a new cartridge. Meanwhile, I like the new Peter and Gwen but do hate the costume. Sometimes haters are totally right. And in this case, yes, we're right.

Spiderman 3 will be better than this...

    by Andrew Coleman

This is just too obvious. They wanted him back in high school to get Twilight tweens to love it. They have already admitted that there will be less action... Well no shit the Twilight films barely had action right? This is fucked up. They drop Raimi because he wanted to use the fucking Vulture... Who cares Vulture is a good villain. Now they pick up Webb because he made an alright romantic comedy. It's the wrong fucking mindset. They don't care about the fans that already exist or people who blatantly remember the movies. "Will just do it again". It's obvious they are doing his origin story AGAIN. I really hope this bombs. I'm usually never like this but this is just too much of a studio hack job attempt to get tweens to care about the franchise. It's a shame they gave Webb the Lizard... That is the one villain Raimi should have done. Would have been great. Now it will suck. Look who they casted as Connors... Horrible.

    Web shooters

    by pointjoe

Always wanted some real ones when I was 5...but if Peter Parker's so hard up for money and they're so poor why not patent that web stuff and be RICH. Always had an issue with that aspect... I remember Stan Lee saying how much he wished he would have wrote the organic web shooting action as opposed to Peter inventing the stuff when the Raimi flicks came out...have to agree.

Why doesn't anyone just give us best of both worlds with natural webbing focused thru shooters. I can see him making his own shooters.... Peter's a genius... but the webbing thing seems like a bigger stretch.

    Lotta vegetation in here.

    by Eli_Cash

Posters I've never seen before making brief positive statements then disappearing. Sony seems to be doing damage control. This is gonna be shit and everybody knows it.

I haven't seen those movies, and honestly I don't want to. You may be right, but from what I have seen of him he doesn't seem like the right choice. Tobey didn't either. Not that I have any better suggestions, but I just don't expect to see him as any kind of real nerd. Nor do I expect him to be able to make the personality change when he becomes spiderman. That's really irrelevant tho. this movie is gonna suck for so many other reasons.

    Web-shooters good, Costume bad!

    by Damian Neal

Love the web-shooters finally being on film. And yes, Peter tried to make money off of his web fluid formula only to get turned down because they evaporate in an hour. The costume looks like a product of tie-dyed, cannibalized, patchwork basketball sewing class 101. Everything else looks great. Not sure about Aunt May being so young looking. Honestly, I hope this movie tanks so bad so Marvel can get Spidey back from Sony and incorporate him into the new Marvel Studios universe. (Fingers crossed)
