Here's Gimli's Kin In THE HOBBIT!
Nordling here.
It's still hard for me to believe this film is happening after all the difficulties, but seeing these shots of the cast in costume and makeup are just terrific. Today, we're taking a look at Oin, played by John Cullen, and Gimil's dad himself, Gloin, played by Peter Hambleton. Gloin looks straight out of Gimli's gene pool, and both look pretty formidable (picture from Yahoo):

Gloin, especially, looks loaded to bear. I wonder if that's the same axe Gimli smashes over the Ring in FELLOWSHIP...
Nordling, out.

I know AICN wasnt

Anywho, glad you guys posted this, in the other talk back, sooooo many Haters. BEHOLD THE MIGHTY BEARDS
-
He could totally be Gimli’s dad. I like how they seem to be developing different looks for different subgroups of dwarves.

I want to see Balin and Oin's failed attempt at taking back Moria!

I think its very cool that we'll get a variety of looks from the different Dwarf "tribes" (I guess you'd call them that) in the movie. Its a great way to distinguish between all of them.
-
Like a mace? DOuble sided?
-
When did they secretly cast him in the role?!
-
Yarp.

this all looks cool so far

Hey you remember that book Ori was holding in the picture from the other day?
by D.Vader
The book Gandalf picks up and reads from in Balin's Tomb in FOTR? The Book of Records... written by Ori. Nice touch, Peter Jackson.
-
He's got Bee Gees hair.
-
but I think thats more to do with the fact, they've been staged in a photogaphers studio, as opposed to Peter J's grimy middle-earth - I'm sure they'll look better on film. Liking the costumes though.

If only TLC would show programs with THESE kinds of dwarves...
by Shut the Fuck up Donny
Little People, Big World? No Problem, cut it down to size!
-
Are you sure thats the book? It only looks too small to be the giant book is all
-
It's 2011, y'all.
-
It's the little touches like those that make me appreciate these films so much...
-
This looks great. I hope Peter and co knock it outta the park with these flicks. Looks like lotr but slightly different which is a good thing. I cant wait to see a trailer.
-
I'm not saying its the same book. In fact, it does look too small in fact to be the same book Gandalf picks up. But, what's important is that PJ and his crew drew the connection. Perhaps we'll see Ori writing down their tale in a different record book. Perhaps we'll see that Ori is a writer, and this is what inspires Bilbo to put "There and Back Again" down on paper. Perhaps the book in the picture is one of Ori's books (he's a reader), and maybe in his back is the BIG book of records we'll see later in FOTR at Balin's Tomb. Either way, its a wonderful little connection and a great detail. Personally, I'm hoping Ori writes all the time and we do see this being an inspiration for Bilbo.
-
I don't know if I have anticipated a film any more than this...except, perhaps, STAR WARS Episode 1.
-
are muthafuckin dwarves!
-
The two of them are montaged together. Photoshop/equalize. The edges on Gloin particularly are a little too 'cut-out'. Fun pic though, although I could see them dancing round 'Stone 'enge' in Spinal Tap.
-
That’s a good sign that they are putting in subtle character details like Ori being fond of reading and writing. Hopefully the book he is holding in the pic is in fact an indication of that. Though I agree that it looks too small to be the one in Moria, and that wouldn’t make sense anyway.

Awesome sauce! Can't wait. 2012 can't get here fast enough; TDKR - Spider Man - Avengers - Prometheus - and the Hobbit, by then Gay Lantern & Bayformers will be just a memory!
by Arkhaminmate001
-
I do not want to draw any parallels between this and Phantom Menace.
-
I love the variety in dwarven looks. They are from different parts of Middle-Earth. I can't believe there are so many joyless people on these boards. They have to hate on everything regardless of what it is. Complete losers. Can't wait to see what WETA does with Carn Dum,Witch King (circa Hobbit),the Necromancer, Lonely Mountain,Dol Guldur, not to mention SMAUG! It's gonna be awesome and these douche bags know it!
-
This batch is more convincing than the last, which was tarnished by the silliness of Starhead. I also like that they're less goth.
-

I love how much space they've put at the top of the picture...
by drumble
to highlight the general Dwarfyness!
-
I didn't picture it looking so much like a photography studio.
-
The dwarves had no weapons or armour in the book. That is why they needed a burglar to steal stuff from the dragon, who had all their armour and weapons. I was looking forward to a Hobbit where they had to get through all the encounters weaponless, with cunning and magic. If they come loaded for war and always looking for fights, it will be nothing like the book. In the book, the dwarves all show up with multi-coloured hoods and except for Bombur, that is how Bilbo distinguishes them generally.

Coooool. Almost as cool as Bayformers getting their rusty asses kicked by a kid with a magic wand....Look out Optimus, Harry Potter is comin' to turn you into a tin of beans!!!!!!
by Arkhaminmate001
-
HEY, who cast that old dude from the porn movies in this as a dwarf? You go hedgehog, or whatever that nickname was.
-
It could be a lot smaller due to the fact he hasn't written in it the events of the hobbit or the attempt at taking back Moria yet. Still wondering how awesome smaug is going to look.
-
...that these are the dwarves as they'll appear all dolled up for the Battle of Five Armies at the end. But knowing Jackson and his writers' complete misunderstanding of the source material, they'll spend both films dressed like this and kicking ass in action scenes that wear out their welcomes two minutes in.
-
If that wasn't an intentional pun, you suck.
-
are they even wearing armor in this pic? just looks like heavy cloth. lets also be realistic, no dwarf king is gonna travel middle earth with only 12 others and none of them armed.
-
It seems like they each have a staff or a weapon of some sort, and the clothes on their backs. It’s not like they have helmets and multiple axes and blades like Gimli did in LotR. I think the kind of equipment they have is reasonable, even if it doesn’t quite fit the book. Obviously these movies are going to depart quite a bit from the source material, so that the tone matches more closely with LotR. The Hobbit is a completely different type of story from LotR, at least until the last third, after they get to Laketown. I am hoping PJ will be more faithful to the source material after that point in the story, but before that I think it makes total sense to make significant alterations.
-
The dwarves had no weapons or armour in the book. That is why they needed a burglar to steal stuff from the dragon, who had all their armour and weapons.
-
Might have looked nicer to have had them in the Bag End set or something. But I guess the point is just to show off the look of the dwarves, so the background doesn’t really matter.
-
Stupid talkback ate the relevant part of my comment, which was this: Of COURSE they had weapons and armor. They've been out of the Lonely Mountain for 150 years -- since Thorin's grandfather's day. They weren't rattling around defenseless all that time. I mean, they fought an entire war against the Orcs! What did they use then -- pointed sticks? Pillows? Harsh language? Make sure you know the story yourself before criticizing Jackson's, or anyone else's, knowledge of Tolkien.
-
The cloaks, so prominently brightly coloured at the Unexpected Party, could be explained as the dwarves wearing them over their armour and gothy-coloured clothes so as to try to blend in while in the shire. Twelve dwarves would attract too much attention but under brilliant cloaks they could be seen as hobbity

Fili and Kili are two young bachelors on the move for some pretty young bearded thing. These two fun loving dudes like long walks along the Long Lake, dancing, battles and hip hop!

..the knees. Look too pointy.
-
my bet is Del Toro's but PJ is the one who is going to get all the praise from the fans for the designs.sigh..
-
These are Richard Taylor, John Howe, Alan Lee, and the guys at WETA's designs.
-
July 8, 2011, 2:33 p.m. CST
yes dvader but whose director's vision and guidance do they follow?
by KilliK
Del Toro's or PJ's?
-
so this salvages some of my hopes.
-
July 8, 2011, 2:41 p.m. CST
I also wonder how much of Del Toro’s design work is going to make it into the films.
by frank
I can see GDT coming up with Starhead. His Smaug had an axe head, after all. I’d prefer it if they didn’t keep that particular design. It was really cool, but not right for Smaug imo. But I do hope that some of his creature designs make it into the finished movies, as that is one thing he excels at.
-
The best that can be said is that every dwarf looks to have some distinctive character. Can't wait to see these guys throw axes and fly around the screen bashing goblins.
-
Love it. Love it. You haters be damned. This will rock!!! Winter is Coming to Hobbiton!!!

Hope these movies rock.

I think you meant, "loaded for bear," but he's only carrying an axe not an entire fucking arsenal. So maybe he's "loaded for beaver."

I really want to see Bombour but I anticipate they're saving him for last.

I know he was a Klingon at least once.

like a backed up bear at the local leather bar.
-
2 out of 5 so far so good. last 3 need revising badly !
-
But still not good. These two look like they should be in a World of Warcraft film - that's not a good thing.
-
You can definitely see the influence of recent "dark fantasy" franchises on this...the Dragon Age costuming is unmistakable. Also a little Song of Fire and Ice for good measure...
-
as in World of Warcraft.
-
A variety of designs for each Dwarf, no two alike. Good stuff. More and more looking forward to this. The Battle of Five Armies is my hook. A whole army of Dwarves kicking the sh#t out of anyone in their way on the slopes of the Lonely mountain? Had that in my imagination since I was 7 years old. but who's playing as Bard the Bowman, and what about Beorn?
-
get all the scoops. You guys need to knock a few doors and suck a few dicks in order to be relevant again. You´re losing the game.
-
Bard is being played by Luke Evans and Swedish actor Michael Persbrandt is Beorn.
-
So we still have another 8 dwarves to go? Also TDKR trailer next week bitches!
-
Seeing as it was written for kids (unlike Lord of the Rings which wasn't written for kids). Those dwarf tossing bits with Gimli at Helms Deep were embarassing.
-
I'm getting that same feeling I did years back when AICN would post anything LOTR during it's production, pure excitement and joy. Although It would have been awesome to see what Del Toro would have done with the world, after seeing these images and remembering the how amazing the Trilogy is, this seem just right.
-
Seriously, get over your lame game. DAO was inspired by Baldur's Gate. Surprise! DAO was a rehash of games/MMOs before it. Dragonslayer Legend 13th Warrior Plenty of "Dark fantasy."
-
its a shame PJ has a propensity for butchering the story turning it into an over the top effects laden action adventure. Please PJ, no dwarf tossing.
-
They look amazing! I still don't forgive PJ for screwing up LOTR but the Hobbit is much easier to handle and I think this can be very very very good.
-
BRAHAHAHAHA
-
Though some will never be satisfied. It's easy to find imaginary flaws in everything. I can do it too. "The sun should have been silvery, not this yellow color, what's up with that? And these green plants every where, that's been done to death. Blue skies? How lame. It should be purple.. everyone knows that. Why do they call it 'Earth' anyway, it's a stupid name." One can find flaws in everything and anything if one is so inclined. So keep on opining and be down with your negative selves. I plan on enjoying the hell out of these movies.
-
found in the chamber of M is only a record of the retaking of Moria. It is not a bible for the Dwarves in general. Nice idea that even at this stage someone is a pen-man though.
-
looks like Sylvester Stallone if he were a hobbit.

by Yelsaeb
Gloin Cloth. Get it?
-
the artistry in the design has always been the best thing about TLOTR, glad to see it is no different with The Hobbit.
-
Look the new pics are awesome but theres a new 10 minute production diary up, figured that might be more interesting. Mind you everyone with half an interest in the hobbit should already be following peter jackson on facebook.
-
very straight
-
These staged pictures look kind of "wrong", but that is often the case with promo shots. It's got to be a challenge to make the different dwarf characters look like individual characters and it seems they are doing that, so... good.
-
There's nothing new in those games. Get some perspective. If anything, those games were copying some of their look from the LOTR films. These costumes are in line with the previous movies.
-
in all that shit? I know the hobbits are going to be ass raping gay just like they were in LotR so maybe they felt like they needed protection from Bilbo the Fairy.
-
Now when do we get to see the other 8?
-
Seconded.
-
. . . he'd look like that nasty little creature in the wall from Cat's Eye.
-

Are those the same backgrounds that the used for the SW Prequel promo shots??
by orcus
They did the same grey backgrounds for that too. Has that now become standard for promos??
-
Every stitch, every bit of these characters detailed so lovingly, they can't help but seem absolutely real.
-
Gimli was fucking retarded. PLEASE no goddamned dwarf-tossing jokes this time. You hear that Jackson? This isn't "Dead Alive 2".
-
July 11, 2011, 8:04 a.m. CST
And yeah, the background makes them look like they are at the prom.

They knowses their poses. Can I get six 8x10 glossies and two wallet sized? Let's try one with the fall leaves background!
