The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day is one year old today! For its birthday we go back where it began!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!

Yep, one year ago today I began this column with a fantastic shot from the set of Ridley Scott’s Alien. The response to the column, both in talkback and privately, was exceptional and I think if that initial picture hadn’t been so good the response probably wouldn’t have been so positive and I might have abandoned the column.

Thankfully it was and I’ve had an amazing time with this column, which has grown past my wildest dreams. I’ve gotten images that have blown my mind, be it the amazing self portrait Kubrick shot over Nicholson’s shoulder during the making of The Shining or the fun stuff sent in by those folks who worked on movies, like Randy Cook’s picture from the making of The Gate or Alex Winter’s Bill and Ted candid shot.

I have many more pics for you in the weeks and months to come, but I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for supporting the column over the last year. I do hope you’ve enjoyed checking it out every day as much as I enjoy organizing it.

Since I’m a fan of nostalgia I wanted to celebrate by posting a shot from Ridley Scott’s Alien. Not only does it make sense for the benchmark anniversary of the column, it’s a sweet shot, too, showing off the amazing Nostromo model. You guys know I’m nutty for model work and this is a great show-off shot of Ridley Scott directing a shot of one of cinema’s most famous spaceships.

Thanks to reader Simon Landry for sending this one along! Click to (slightly) embiggen!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at

That’s not all. Remember back in the pre-site revamp days when I’d have the list of previous BTS pics at the end of each article? Well, the redesign messed up a lot of coding and that list ended up being way too long to tag onto each article, but I’ve been quietly recoding and collecting each pic onto one page. I’m going to post that page today and starting tomorrow there’ll be a link at the bottom of each BtSPotD to every single image used in this article.

Keep an eye on the site for the complete collection of BTS images!

Tomorrow’s behind the scenes pic will be one to talk about ‘round the water cooler.

Saw it yesterday in anticipation for Prometheus. The Space Jockey room never ceases to amaze me, it is such a realistic set, fantastic work by Giger.

If you look carefully you can just barely make out Thomas Edison standing behind that camera.

The model work in that movie, as well as the sets, constantly amazes me. But if that's the "miniature" I'd hate to see the 1/10th version. XD Thanks for my favorite column and continued good luck with it. ??Pseudo?? Out.

    The Nostromo

    by J43

There's some videos on youtube documenting the restoration of the Nostromo model, which was left sitting outside for 20 years. Worth watching.

can never have enough of those

  • July 7, 2011, 4:58 p.m. CST

    by Quint

I don't have any, but some very tiny pics that are thumbnail size and way too small to post here. If you want to send them in I'll use them. If not, send them to that "other site" that has a regular BTS image column, I guess.

  • July 7, 2011, 4:59 p.m. CST

    Quint, you weren't kidding

That was 'slightly' Maybe half a pixel?

This column has become my new Far Side Calendar

    by Ruester

It has become apart of my daily ritual. Seriously, it has. Get up, grab coffee or whatever and continue with the day's activities and along the way check out the BTSPoTD. It's also great to show people at work, it always starts a good conversation. I can't believe it's already been a year for this welcomed addition to my routine. In other words---Thanks Quint!

  • July 7, 2011, 5:27 p.m. CST

    One more thing...

    by Ruester

That first image from Alien did grab me when you posted it a year ago, I can't tell you how many people I've shown it to, who had no idea the size and scope of that set.

  • July 7, 2011, 5:30 p.m. CST

BTS is the best thing on this site.

    by disfigurehead

Alien is the shit BTW. Aliens is a good action movie that happens to have aliens in it.

    The Alex Winter candid

    by Michael_Jacksons_Ghost

I had printed into a 8x10, and had Alex sign it back in May during a convention stop he made in Orlando. His Q & A was entertaining as well.

  • Quint, the stubborn 12 year old of AICN.

    Congratulations Quint!

Between Behind the Scenes and his gone-but-not-forgotten A Movie A Day reviews, let us toast this man for his endurance and dedication. Well done, sir!

For model fanboys (of which I'm one), this is goddamn porn. Awesome and congrats on the milestone!

  • July 7, 2011, 6:40 p.m. CST

Didn't realize that model was the size of a bus!

  • ...but the damn thing's so rare now, cannot...cut..vinyl..and..snip...styrene. The awesome story of how the Nostromo prop from Alien was rescued: This video documents the restoration of the original Nostromo model miniature by The Prop Store Of London:

Excellent stuff Quint... keep up the good work! Got anything from the Mad Max films?

    by donkey_lasher

Alien is one of my favourite films ever. Seeing the model work and the effort that went into it is amazing. I only hope that what has been leaked about Prometheus is wrong, as I think the Space Jockeys should still have more mystique about them. How about some KONG pics. Now that would please us all!

  • July 7, 2011, 7 p.m. CST

Quint, I love the column, but how about a post with all the links to each of these.

    by Stereotypical Evil Archer

Or like how you used to post them on the bottom until the big catastrophic hack back in December. It was a good way to browse through them and it made these postings seem more like a virtual museum of movie history. To be blunt. Bring back the links! Please.

There are a lot of times on this website, where I think the Talkbacks are actually the WORST part of the site, and their consistent overwhelming negativity goes a long way to driving a lot of people away from the site. However, the BTS pic of the day column brings out the BEST in the talkbacks, and thats the main reason I love this feature, Quint. intelligent, passionate discussion about classic films and filmmakers. thats what the talkbacks are all about, to me. not the "___ sucks, ___ should die!" drivel that permeates through 90% of the other TBs. here's to another year of great pics and great discussion.

  • Obviously you can't see it here but on closer shots you can.

Love all the shots that you've put up over the past year, and the little tidbits as well. Great job and keep it up!

DarthKong: that is EXACTLY what I thought too

    by Monroville

When I first looked through the ALIEN photonovel. I kept seeing those pics of the bridge nose during the storm, and I kept turning my head sideways and thinking "Am I looking at this thing right?" <p> It's always looked like a really greebled-up Y-wing head...

  • July 8, 2011, 2:37 a.m. CST
