ENEMY AT THE GATES.... a very cool project

Published at:  Jan 18, 2000 6:26:23 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with a few small tidbits on a project that I've been looking at for the past couple of months... ENEMY AT THE GATES from Jean-Jacques Annaud. With Jude Law at the lead... and coming off of THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY... This will be his big star making role.... well that's my bet. I've heard great whispers about the script on this one, though I have... unfortunately, been unable to read it at this date. Here's the latest...

Hi Harry

This may be old/boring news but it seems Jean-Jacques Annaud´s latest, enemy
at the gates, has entered production. It will be europe´s most expensive
movie ever with a budget of about 100 million dollars. It´s filmed in an old
russian military base outside berlin and in Germanys classic filmstudio,
Babelsberg in Potsdam.

Jude Law, Ed Harris, Rachel Weisz och Joseph Fiennes play the keyroles, with
Jude Law playing the russian sniper who later became honoured as the Soviet
union hero of Stalingrad.

The shootings are supposed to be 4 months long.

Cheers

//J

..this looks like a truly great film in the making. Jude Law as a russian sniper? Ed Harris as a Nazi? Bring it on I say. There's always room for more great WW2 films...

This is a famous true sniper story begging to be made

    by brendan3

During the siege on Stalingrad, there was a famous Soviet sniper who had racked up so many kills, and a fearsome reputation with the Germans, that the Germans sent their best sniper, who also happened to be their head sniper instructor, to Stalingrad to hunt down and kill the Soviet sniper. This was a big deal at the time, as both countries were trumpeting the feats of their hero snipers on radio and in newspapers. The two snipers wound up hunting each other for weeks through the ruined city until (SPOILER) the Soviet sniper made his kill. It's a classic warrior story... I'm just sorry I can't remember their names. For more information, The History Channel did a whole story about it during their sniper documentary.

    by giancarlo

Who the hell gives a flying fuck about Brad Pitt. Everybody makes it seem like oh he is sheding his pretty boy image and he can act. Fuck that!!! Now this kid can act, has looks and hangs out with some darn cool motherfuckers. After I saw Gattaca and Talented Mr Ripley I knew this guy was going to be a star.

    Films by Jean-Jacques Annuad

    by stephen dedalus

Has anybody seen QUEST FOR FIRE? It's the best caveman movie ever made. A very naturalistic movie. Annaud has a fine feeling for films with naturalistic settings, whether it's the haunting forests of THE BEAR, or the stark middle-ages world of IN THE NAME OF THE ROSE. I really want to see what he'll do with a film with a theme like this one.

Always thought this would make a good movie.

    by badashe

Brendan3 and I must have seen the same show. Kickass story here. Both the German and Russian armies stopped fighting in the town so these 2 snipers could have a showdown. How the Russian ended up finding the guy is pretty cool. Next they need to do a movie on one of our Vietnam snipers that had 87 confirmed kills (not sure?). The book character Bob Lee Swagger was based on him. This is just another example of how there are alot of great untapped ideas out there to find so long as Hollywood gets off their lazy asses and finds them. Bitter.

    Yes, its a true story

    by mdb

The russian sniper was Vassili Zaitsev and the german was a Major named Konings. The story can be found in an excellent book titled "one shot, one kill". I also think an exccellent sniper film could be made og Sgt. Carlos Hatchcock's accomplishments as a US Marine.

They'll never do a Carlos Hatchcock film

    by brendan3

Which is a shame, because it's a hell of a story too... a true legend among snipers. He racked up an amazing number of enemy kills, had a bounty on his head, and his show down with an NVA sniper is the stuff that makes legends, complete with a genuine Hollywood ending, taking out the other sniper with a single shot right through the enemy's scope. But, the story of a sniper who racked up that many kills in Vietnam would probably not be as well received in today's sensitive politically correct Hollywood... maybe in another generation.

    Carlos Hathcock

    by ridge-runner

You mean Carlos Hathcock, the feared "White Feather" (in reference to the feather he wore in his boonie hat), who racked up 93 confirmed kills and a whole slew of "unconfirmed" others during the Vietnam War. He actually slipped into a North Vietnamese army base and took out a Major General, and then hunted down a Vietnamese torturer called the "Apache Woman." In short, he was da Man!!! He died just this past year, and yeah, I think his story would make a hell of a movie.

More cool info on Zaitsev (READ THIS!!!!)

    by stephen dedalus

Vassili Zaitsev is credited with killing around 242 people during the siege of Stalingrad (no shit). The German who was hunting him, Major Konings, was killed in an almost Road Runner/Wile E. Coyote fashion. Zaitsev had an assistant with him at the time, who had a rather large helmet. The two were in a trench, well guarded by the shade. They had worked Konings into a position where he was at a disadvantage because of the sunlight facing him. When Zaitsev noticed the gleam off of Konings' rifle, his assistant put a stick under his helmet and raised it above the trench (like how Bugs Bunny would raise a hat to see if Elmer Fudd was nearby, and Fudd would shoot it off, confirming Bugs' suspicions). Konings fired, and hit the helmet. The assistant screamed convincingly. When Konings raised his head to look at his victim and gloat, Zaitsev shot him between the eyes. Pretty damn cool, huh? Eventually, though, Zaitsev was wounded by a land mine and had to be taken out of action. God only knows how many more he would have killed if he stayed in.

    Hathcock

    by mdb

I was thinking of rather than focusing on Vietnam, simply make a film about his two days at elephant valley. Anyone who is familiar with Hathcock will know what I mean. For those who are not I suggest a book titled 'Marine Sniper'

    Ed Harris

    by all thumbs

Gotta disagree with you, Darth Bond. His role as Christof in "The Truman Show" was a very good role for him and was not a waste of time, like some others he's been in lately.***Just wanna say, Ed Harris is the sexiest bald man in the world (even sexier than many men with hair!).

    snipers and landmines

    by brendan3

I didn't know that about Zaitsev being put out of action by a land mine. That was interesting, because Hathcock was put out of action by a mine as well, through no fault of his own. A personnel carrier he was hitching a ride on hit a mine, ending his sniping days. He suffered burns over most of his body pulling wounded Marines out of the carrier, for which he was later awarded the silver star. That's an interesting coincidence between Hathcock and Zaitsev though... both great snipers with amazing feats and tolls, both hunted by their enemy's best snipers, both victorious, both legendary in their day, and both put out of action by land mines. cool.

    by cah

Not only is Jude Law the most gorgeous guy on this planet, hands down, he's a brilliant and talented actor. I've enjoyed him since "Gattaca" and thought he was really good in "Ripley." Can't wait for this new movie to come out!

    by aetius

One thing I haven't seen mentioned...it sounds like this movie will be based on the truly excellent book of the same name by William Craig. Those of us who mispent our youth playing Squad Leader will remember that book from the designer notes for the the game....(also counting down to Gladiator)-Aetius

REALLY! I hate when there's a story like: "Harry here. Just got some wonderful news from an old fellow flickfan of mine. Seems a movie I have been drooling over waiting for has begun production. YAAAAAA!!!!! Here's the tidbit. Enjoy..." Then it goes: "Hi, Harry! This is . Just wanted to say that has started filming here in ! I know you've been waiting for a LONG time for some info on this what-is-to-be a GREAT, kickass flick! Enjoy, sincerely !!" Then the talkbacks begin. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here saying to myself, WTF!! Just thankful that there are some sympathetic souls out there to cater to those of us not quite in the same, big loop as others...
