THE MUPPETS' Green Album Is Coming!

Nordling here.

We don't often post about music on AICN, but this was too cool not to talk about - on August 23rd, Disney will release MUPPETS: THE GREEN ALBUM, filled with some of our favorite Muppet songs, covered by such artists as Weezer, My Morning Jacket, and OK Go.  I'm assuming this will be ramping up to the Thanksgiving release of the new film.  And that's perfectly fine with me.

I'm especially curious to hear Weezer and Paramore's Hayley Williams' take on "Rainbow Connection", but My Morning Jacket covering "Our World" sounds like a terrific match as well.  My Morning Jacket doing an Emmet Otter song?  Yeah.  I'm there.

Here's the track listing:

01 OK Go: "Muppet Show Theme"
02 Weezer and Paramore's Hayley Williams: "Rainbow Connection"
03 The Fray: "Mahna Mahna"
04 Alkaline Trio: "Moving Right Along"
05 My Morning Jacket: "Our World"
06 Amy Lee: "Halfway Down the Stairs"
07 Sondre Lerche: "Mr. Bassman"
08 The Airborne Toxic Event: "Wishing Song"
09 Atreyu's Brandon Saller and Good Charlotte's Billy Martin: "Night Life"
10 Andrew Bird: "Bein' Green"
11 Matt Nathanson: "I Hope That Something Better Comes Along"
12 Rachael Yamagata: "I'm Going to Go Back There Someday"

Nordling, out.

airborne toxic event, andrew bird, sondre merche and matt nathanson are all excellent, but the rest is all either shitty pop (weezer, ok go, paramore, the fray) or shitty alt rock (my morning jacket, amy lee)

Calculated hipster posing disguised as sincerity..

    by MST3KPIMP

So now college kids will think the Muppets are cool because Ok Go are covering the theme? The Muppets are better than this or at least I like to think so. Trying to juxtapose them with hipster bands seems limiting for theyre broader audience. This is the kind of stuff that will trap them in the current culture when they need to transcend it.

Not Sure If You Know This But......

    by Kyle Stark

a few years ago My Morning Jacket was actually scheduled to go on the road and do a tour of strictly Muppet songs. On stage would be Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem, and then behind a curtain My Morning Jacket would actually be playing the songs. It was all set to go, but then apparently the executive/producer at Disney who was behind it got fired, and along with him this idea went too. Jim James, the lead singer of My Morning Jacket, actually cites Kermit as one of the major influences on the way he sings..... not even joking, lol. They are a match made in heaven, just wish it was them doing the whole album.

    How about releasing the ORGINIAL

    by GrendelGrendelGrendel

Muppet Movie soundtrack on CD instead? It's been out of print for 20 years! No one wants this new album. No one cares about new groups covering these tunes. People want the originals. No one's heard of most of these teenybopper/disney channel singers anyway.

  • June 26, 2011, 3:32 p.m. CST

More than "Can You Picture That", I'd love to hear "Night Life"

    by GoDFaDDa42

The Electric Mayhem playing furiously atop an almost-exploding double-decker bus at night on the streets of London. The originals are out there - check iTunes/Zune/etc. There's the Muppets 25th Anniversary CD, and the soundtracks were rereleased when Disney rereleased the movies on DVD a few years ago.

    by MaxThrust

Having been removed from your body must have been tough... but no need to be cranky. The key to staying current is going a la carte when it comes music - getting a hold of radio station samplers has kept me from going stale on the band front: sure, 60-70% of the stuff is crap, but now and then you find a song by a popular band from the modern day that you like. Start using technology platforms like _________ (which rhymes with abhorrent) or Pandora so you can sample all you like without paying a price. My music tastes go all the way back to Bill Haley and Fats Domino, but I still dig new bands like OK Go! - albeit on select songs.

  • June 27, 2011, 1:47 a.m. CST

I just lost SO much respect for...

    by tensticks

Weezer. Seriously...Hayley Williams? Paramore is a Chrstian Rock "onramp" band (though like Evanescence and Flyleaf they deny it and/or claim their beliefs have no bearing on their music). I'm sorry...I don't care what someone's beliefs are...but there is NOTHING in this world LAMER than fucking Christian rock. Weezer, a pre-eminently cool band (even if they are proto-emo), have just been tainted by association, and lost some serious credibility and coolness points in the process. Damn them.

  • June 27, 2011, 1:54 a.m. CST

All these bands lick balls hard

    by BERSERKR

Would have been much better ifnt was actually the muppets.

Bah, I saw a band play "can you picture that"!

    by jon

at Spaceland in Silverlake, ca. Was that your band?

  • Look at it more as a way to get kids who don't know the Muppets interested in their songs through bands they've heard of. Or complain. Either way, those original songs still exist.

If by "Seattle" you mean "The drummer's basement", maybe. Because by "band", I mean "a couple of people who can hold instruments correctly and jammed a couple of times". ;) But really, I'm glad to hear there are bands out there recognizing the Mayhem.

  • June 27, 2011, 7:56 a.m. CST

And by "Seattle" I meant "Spaceland in California"
