Joe Johnston comments upon JURASSIC PARK 3

Published at:  Jan 17, 2000 4:38:24 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... and ya know. I have to say that I'm about twice as excited about Joe Johnston doing the third JURASSIC PARK movie, than I would be if Spielberg was doing it. Why? Because... While I had fun with THE LOST WORLD... It seems, in a lot of ways... As if Spielberg was a little bored with the film. It seemed he was on auto-pilot. Joe Johnston on the otherhand... well after his fantastic OCTOBER SKY... and the spirit of adventure he gave us in THE ROCKETEER... I'm hoping for something that will really blow me away... that won't be based on the latest out of the printer, Crichton novel. Don't get me wrong... I love the original JURASSIC PARK novel to death... But we don't need rehashing. Instead we need someone new to just RUN with it. And as Joe says below... the addition of ALOT of FLYING DINOSAURS... well that suits me just fine. Now... let's put real characters that we care about in the mix... and see this baby really take off.

Here is a Pretty interesting scoop about JP3 From a Danish News Paper who
interviewed Joe Johnston for October Sky I found this at
Spielberg-Dreamworks.Com here is what they had to say and
exerpts from the article:

Danish Newspaper interviewed director Joe Johnston a while ago when his last
film October Sky Premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The interview was
published last week and 'Lindgaard' was kind enough to send the translation
along on the details never before released. The budget of this film is around
$83 million and will go under production in the coming months and will hit
theatres summer of 2001. Thanks to 'T. Lindgaard' for the translation and the
scoop.

the Danish newspaper "Politikken" did an interview with the director Joe
Johnston when his film "October Sky" had its premiere at the Venice Film
Festival in 99. In connecting with the Danish premiere of "October Sky" in
January the newspaper printed the interview with Johnston on January the 7th.
Johnston revealed some very interesting facts about Jurassic Park 3. (The
following is a translation of the interview)

"…I am very happy for this assignment…There will be a lot of special
effects, but most importen for me, would be the story. The story is the key
to a good movie. Steven Spielberg has given me "carthe blanche". He has said
that I shall make my own movie, all though the plot in the movie is based on
idea by Steven. He has strongly pointed out that I shouldn't try to copy him.
Since our collaboration with the "Indiana Jones trilogy" we have talked about
a joined project…I loved the two first movies and all though the audience
will compare my movie with Steven Spielberg´s, it doesn't scare me at all. I
cannot disclose the plot yet. We are so to speak still in the "development
phase" (at that time in summer 1999), but there will be new persons and new
dinosaurs. We want to create a feeling of something exceptional, as we know
from the two first movies. A sort of a returning to the first one. Maybe
there will be two characters we already know from the two first ones, but in
the end rather unknown characters will appear."

…( Jurassic Park is considered as a milestone in special effects. Will the
third one be the same?) " Since "Jurassic Park" and "Lost World" the
evolution within FX has gone fast, and I will of course, use a lot of the new
techniques that has been invented in the latest Star Wars Episode I. I see
for me a lot of flying reptiles. I look forward to start filming. The budget
is set to be 83 millions dollars."

There ya go Harry. now we wonder if Grant and Ellie will be back as though
two characters or Malcom...who knows...and who in the hell is doing the score?

this is Padawan78 signing out...or something

He was the only interesting character in The Lost World, a movie that had no focus, no point at all. I hope they bring Malcolm back, & his daughter. But I want her to get eaten in the opening scene!

Grant and Ellie had wonderful chemistry when Malcom was around. That would be cool. BUT, having new characters to replace Grant and Ellie would be just silly, IMO. Anyhow, this should be a good romp since I totally dig the Johnston/ Speilberg colab idea.

Trying to milk the Jurassic cow for all it's worth

    by niiiice

The enormous weekly box office depreciations of The Lost World should have sent a clear warning signal to the brains of Spielberg and Universal. The general consensus should have been "Oh crap, it's a good thing the film opened so well, we might actually get away with this" and learned never to attempt such a thing again. The Lost World didn't leave much of an impression on people, certainly not the kind of impression that Jurassic Park made when it first came out. You know what I'm talking about. Everyone was telling everyone else to go see it, it was unbeleivable! The second film seemed to just trivialize the dinosaurs. I groaned when I saw the raptor stay perfectly still while Malcom's daughter perfected her gymnastic technique. The first film had a point. Not to tamper with evolution and mother nature. The second film didn't have a point, and even if the third film does, I have reservations about the audience even giving it a chance.

So there gonna try and create something new for the Jurassic Park franchise and take it in a new direction. Perhaps they could follow on from the new approach The Lost World took and now give Jeff Goldblum's character a new green alien child to bring in the long underestimated Jupiter pay per view audience that Universal are looking for to maximise their revenues and squuze every dollar out of an ailing franchise.
Is it just me or was the first film not that good to start off with?
Pleasee lets not have Jurassic Park 3.

Crichton isn't the sell-out, try Spielberg

    by lazarus long

I saw Jurassic Park 5 times in the theatre. It was a a great experience. But unfortunately, I was rushing to finish reading the book before the film came out, and I was GREATLY disappointed in the cuts to the story and theme of the novel. Crichton's tale was a cautionary one, and I don't think most people walked away saying "Hey man, don't fuck with mother nature." It was more like "Cool effects!" Although Malcom's speeches about chaos theory may have been long winded and hard to adapt, they could have tried to insult the intelligence of American audiences a little less (like the "Dino DNA!" documentary they watch at the beginning of the tour, which is there only to explain stuff to us). Also, there were scenes in the novel set in the aviary, with some really scary shit with the Pterodactyls. Also a cool chase down the river with the T-Rex chasing them. The Lost World seemed like a sell-out when I heard it was coming out, but Crichton did include a lot of interesting stuff about extinction. It wasn't a cheap sequel (the first book ended on the notion that the dinos had already migrated off the island anyway), but Spielberg saw to it that ALL of the thought-provoking material was excised from the film. How part 3 will be any better is beyond me. We're not going to have the same reaction to the effects as the first time, and the story won't be there to save the day. The only Crichton film that did justice to the book was the Andromeda Strain, back in the 60's when they thought we were smart enough to have science in a film.

    JP3: EXTINCTION

    by sidious

Hmmmm....... Is it Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, or is it one of them James Bonds films?

Anyway, I think the third installment is called Jurassic Park: Extinction. Having Speilberg write the story is a bad idea since he and David Koepp took Cricton's Lost World and turned it into a piece of crap.

Can anyone please tell me what "THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK" movie trailer meant by saying "Something Has Survived." When I saw the movie, I didn't see any dinosaurs that survived from some kind of disaster, nor did I hear about it.

    JP3....PUH-lease!

    by celluloid monkey

JP1 was FABULOUS the first time I saw. Great the second time, and okay the third. AS you can see it just kinda went downhill from there. Now I can't even bear to watch the film after the T-Rex attacks the SUV. I guess it was just the effects that pulled me in the first time. JP2 was barely watchable the first time; bad acting(did Spielberg tell Goldblum to be less intellectual?), bad script, laughable effects(the T-rex looked way too cartoony-evil), and major plot holes(why wouldn't those pterodactyls fly to the mainland). JP3 seems to be purely a financial decision, proven by Spielberg's distance from the project and the fact that no one really wants to see more attacking dino's after JP2 destroyed any credibility the genre had.

Variety magazine reports that JP3 is a go! I quote "Whats most exciting is that ILM is pioneering some new effects for the film. The one they are most proud of is a new technique where they use bluescreen technology to project film of ghila monsters and komodo dragons behind the heroes of the film, thereby slashing the usual cost of millions of dollars down to $2.75" Director Alan Smithee was also quoted as being "Very Excited!"

EVIL DEAD 3 DOES NOT SUCK!!!

    by scott1458

Bunch of bastards. Each Evil Dead movie has it's own place, and the 3rd one is right where it belongs, lots of laughs and a little bit of horror sprinkled in.

As for J3, who cares. Yes the first novel was great, yes I think Crition dropped the ball on the second one (as SS did) but the 3rd one will probally make money, and will be even worse than the 2nd one.

And if you're going by the "3rd movie blows" formula, funny. I thought Goldfinger was the BEST of the Bonds. And don't give me that crap about Casino Royale, that was NOT a bond movie.

    by moviecritic

After the crappy screen time Lord Richard Attenborough got for The Lost World, I say he should be brought back just one more time. He helped make Jurassic Park as well as the rest of the crew in that film. Put him in a part of the Jp3 storyline where he can be put to good use (And I don't mean being eaten by the dinosaurs).

    This is going to SUCK...

    by stephen dedalus

I liked the first JURASSIC PARK, because it had an interesting plot and gave us a lot of unique facts along the way (all that info on how raptors attack, how T-Rexes see things, etc.) But THE LOST WORLD is one of the biggest letdowns I have seen in the past twenty years. It literally had NO PLOT WHATSOEVER, and no interesting little tidbits to keep us going. I think they ran out of ideas with the first one. Heck, I missed Wayne Knight when I was watching the sequel. That entire scene where they were chasing the dinosaurs in those inventinve vehicles with the guns and the nets was simply a set up for merchandising and toys- you didn't see any of those fancy cars used anywhere else in the film! But I agree on the Bond films- GOLDFINGER was Connery's best, and THE SPY WHO LOVED ME is the essential Roger Moore. ("Keeping the British end up, sir!" Heh heh.) And the third BACK TO THE FUTURE film was respectable enough. But this new JURASSIC PARK movie may not even go over well with the audience. I know a LOT of people who walked out of TLW disappointed.

    Third Time's the Charm

    by orpheus

Well, I didn't hate The Lost World. It did have a nice PC "save the dinosaurs from eploitation" angle. Though, granted, it did get kinda buried. The scene with the TRex in the city was great, you gotta admit. Anyway, three is actually a good film number. ROTJ was excellent, and everyone liked it until a few computer nerds starting bitching about the Ewoks back in the early nineties. A lot of Apes fans would argue that Planet of the Apes 3 was much better than the 2nd one, though I just stick with the original. Indy 3 was better than Indy 2, though a bit too much of a yuk yuk fest. Die Hard 3 was cool. Oh yeah, Karate Kid 3 was far and away the best KK movie. There was actually a point. The kid had to actually learn something (besides the crane technique). I watched it on HBO recently, and I thought it had some real depth.

    TO EDGARD AND BOND

    by scott1458

yeah, I can see your points. Overall the 3rd time the charm is a flop. But regarding Evil Dead, I love all 3. Again, they each have their little place in the trilogy, however I would pick the 2nd one as the best overall.

And Goldfinger is THE best bond of them all. As for TWINE, well I liked it but that's up to personal opinion. I thought GE was the best of Bronsan's.

Now back to J3, I think we all agree that it will blow chunks. It's going to get thrown up there for monetary reasons only, and probally will make $, just like these horrible Terminator 3 & 4. (another 3 time the charm :) )

But I'm a huge Crition fan, and again I'm very dissapointed in the lost world. First he stole the title to a classic and second, he was a pile of steggasaurous dung.

Although that one scene in the movie with the japanese tourists running around a'la Godzilla is priceless!

    by brundledan

Crisp and Darth Bond - In answer to your questions, there are supposedly TWO more BTTF sequels in development at Universal; the plan is to release them back-to-back a la parts II and III. And no, Zemeckis will not be directing, Michael J. Fox will not be starring (the poor guy has Parkinson's; I doubt he'll be taking on any more roles that require a lotta action), and now we're hearing that Christopher Lloyd, considered the backbone of any BTTF project thanks to the Animated Series and The Ride, might opt out. Personally (and speaking as a lifelong BTTF fanatic; I think it is THE most perfect film series ever), I think this is one of the stupidest damn things they could ever do. The story's OVER. At the end of III (which, by the way, escapes the "shitty third movie" curse - I think it was almost as excellent as the orignal), the DeLorean gets offed, Marty and Doc say their goodbyes, and Doc and family fly off in that completely bad-ass flying train. There, the story's over - but NOOO. BTTF's perfect the way it is - don't screw with perfection, especially if you can't get ANY of the key players that made it special to begin with.

An island full of cloned dinosaurs is taken over by terrorists and only John McClane can stop them. Think of it. Bruce VS Terrorists AND Dinos. It would be all sorts of fun. To that guy who liked the interesting facts given in JP1 (which btw I loved), the facts on how fast raptors ran and T. rex's vision were completely made up, like those tiny 'dilophosaurs' with the big frills :)

I HOPE TO GOD there are no more BACK TO THE FUTURE movies. That would be a travesty, and would ruin the big title reading THE END that finished the greatest movie trilogy in history.

What kind of lame plot are they trying to stick on to us now? At the end of each of the novels, the island gets destroyed. Now, a _third_ group of individuals is coming to this stupid island? Pluh-ezze! The only interesting script this could have is if it continued from where JP, the novel, started: dinosaurs are gradually coming ashore. Not in that stupid "T-Rex loose in LA" sthick that was in LW, either.--Saulot--

    Karate Kid V

    by dirty sanchez

Let's wipe away the abberation that was III (don't even get me started on "Next KK") and make a whole new film that celebrates the feelings of the first two. Let's get all the Cobra Kai guys back, Members Only jackets, blow-dried hairdos, 80s dirtbikes and all. The plot: Johnny (the ever-spellbinding William Zabka) has never recovered from losing the All-Valley championship 16 years ago. He is now a bloated, beer-drinking shell of his former self. Working as a used car salesman in Fresno, he spends his nights watching a faded Beta tape of the match while consuming a fifth of Old Crow and eating cold, three day old pizza. Meanwhile, Daniel has channeled his martial arts skills into a career as a star of action films. Most of them are the poor, low-quality films that Jeff Speakman and Billy Blanks used to make. While he loves the fame and the money, he yearns to get back to the karate that first inspired him. Will Johnny reunite with the Cobra Kais and challenge Daniel to a rematch? Will Daniel remember that a belt means "no need rope hold up pants"? Stay tuned...

JP was great, but The Lost World was, indeed, an autopilot film for Spielberg. You could tell he didn't want to be doing it. About the third Jurassic Park movie...

    by kubrick

I thought the first JP movie was great and liked the second one, too. I have enjoyed Johnston's previous films such as The Rocketeer (great comic book adaption) and Jumanji so, I hope he does well with JP 3. On the other hand, the late Edward Margulies said in his Mr.Showbiz column that was it just me or were other movie fans underwhelmed that a third JP movie was in the works. While he thought the first JP movie was frightening, he didn't like the second one and
feels Johnston would be better off tackling the sequel to Jumanji
    (which instead Ken Ralston
is directing). While, he liked JP1
he was sad the actors Attenbourgh,
Dern and Goldblum weren't devoured by the dinos and feels if there must be a JP3, Goldblum should be brought back to be raptored to death.

I don't know why everyone's complaining about how the third movie always sucks. Looks to me like the JP franchise couldn't get any worse than it was in the second movie so we're in line for a big improvement come 2001. TLW was a terrible piece of garbage and even SS admitted later that he was disappointed with it. Any movie with dinosaurs has potential.

    SEQUELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by mistamind

First off, let me just say that I enjoyed all three die hard films, whereas i think that the second one was a little lacking in comparison to the other two. Also, the evil dead trilogy is incredible and after seeing the original ending to army of darkness on dvd, i have a new respect for the franchise. Some people don't think a sequel to army of darkness could work after seeing the film's original ending, but remember at the end of the first evil dead film, ash was swallowed up by the darkness that roams the forest. so technically, he died at that film's conclusion. maybe the other two films were some dream he had while under the grip of the demonic evil in the cabin? who knows? anyway, i have the ultimate idea for a sequel. it's a sequel to a great many films, all rolled up into one.here goes.

It all begins in New York City, 2002. The planets align in an event not seen for over 2,000 years. This causes many strange things to happen across the world. The forces of darkness are unleashed upon the world, born from our own minds in the forms of the creatures that haunt our nightmares. Many of these creatures would spring out of the movies we see. Like the xenomorphs from the Alien series, Freddy from the NOES series, The demons from The Evil Dead series, zombies from Romero films, Michael Meyers, etc. they run rampant in our demension, destroying indescriminately. This occurs until humanity realises they can't destroy this menace. Only their mortal enemies from the celluloid world could destroy these evil things. In our dreams once again, things spring out. But this time, the dreams are here to help. Imagine heroes like Ashe, Ripley and the Colonial Marines, the dream Warriors, Blade, and many others banding together to save mankind!
I admit, it sounds a lot like "last Action Hero", and it's really just an excuse for me to finally see all my heroes on the silver scren just for one time, but if pulled off properly, it wouldn't be laughable. People would embrace this film. Sure, the budget alone in making this cast come together would be astronomical, not to mention the film's amazing effects, but just be a fanboy for a moment, and let the wonder of it all sink in. I want t hear some feedback on this, people!

    by todd

Rather then build a metal skeleton to be over laid with a latex or rubber skin to create an artificial dinosaur, it may be more cost effective to simply out fit THE IRON GIANT with a dinosaur costume. You have the further benefit of THE GIANT being able to fly. This would be an inexpensive practical option to expensive special effects. Good luck Mr. Johnston

    Jurassic Shark

They should make a movie about a giant prehistoric shark. I'd rather see Sam Neill in a leading role rather than Jeff Goldbloom. I'd hate to see JP3, but I'd hate it less if Sam was the lead rather than the apathetic Jeff.
