Quentin Tarantino Has Found His Django!

Nordling here.

Lots of actors circled the title role for Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED - Will Smith, Idris Elba - but one actor has apparently signed on the line that is dotted - Jamie Foxx, who will join Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, and Christoph Waltz in Tarantino's "Southern", his slave drama film, to be released in 2012,

Foxx is no stranger to dramatic roles, having won the Oscar for RAY, and I think he's a good choice.  My personal favorite was Elba, but Foxx is no slouch and will work well with the cast.  I just want to see this thing - I haven't read the script.  I read INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS and regretted it - it was such a rich script that I wish I'd held out and experienced it first on the big screen.  Won't be making that mistake this time.  DJANGO UNCHAINED is being produced by the Weinstein Company.

Nordling, out.

Your boy Del Toro stole Idris Elba, Harry

    by Terrence

Otherwise he was the frontrunner for this one. Granted, I like Foxx, when he's on, he's on...but would have been curious to see how Elba would have taken this on.

    Slave picture....okay.

    Good Choice

    by Bobo_Vision

He can carry a film as a lead actor...he has the gravitas and the charisma....he can act....he can entertain....and we haven't seen him do the ultraviolent yet...and he would have no problem with that or the cursing like other actors might have.

  • June 22, 2011, 7:22 p.m. CST

    Good choice, terrible picture.

    by Mattman

  • June 22, 2011, 7:22 p.m. CST

Where can I get the script? I really want to read this now

    by tamethecunt

I"Ve looked everywhere to no avail. W/ Leo playing the bad guy I"d really like to see this in my mind to see if it'll work. Somebody with it help out a brother. Oh, I still would have preferred Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackey or Derek Luke for the role. Or even Idris Elba. I"m glad it's not Will Smith though.

  • It will happen.

  • June 22, 2011, 7:23 p.m. CST

    I can see it....

    by Doc_Hudson

Even though Jaime seems to have grown a huge ego,...he did Ray so well,..I forgive it. Now,..I wonder how well Sam's parts are..considering he can't say fuck every other word. I just hope that the South doesn't end up looking like Nazi Germany in it....the one thing that gets glossed over, that not all whites hated and owned blacks. It was all just a way of life,...and with the twisting of facts in IB,....I kinda worry a bit. But I also know this is just a Tarantino flick....not a history lesson,...but the Hitler death in IB was just something I thought too me out of the moment.Sure,..that would have been a great way to kill him,...but in a's just a bit too corny.

  • This one will incite fucking riots. And yes, there are people around that will hate the concept of this that much for the mere fact of it being some type of slave fantasy.

  • June 22, 2011, 7:27 p.m. CST

Or is this gonna be the black verison of Inglorious Basterds??

    by tamethecunt

From what I"ve heard Waltz is essentially playing eh same character from IB. And it's really he that's the main character. That's why I really want to get my hands on that script. Like I said, if anybody has it please let me know. Thanks.

    Geez Louise Not Jamie Foxx!?!

    by Arcangel2020

I am not sure what to make of this bit of casting news regarding Tarantino's "Django" I am not a big fan of Jamie Foxx...don't get me wrong here I loved the movie "Ray", it is a terrific Biopic and Foxx did a bang up job portraying the musician. I even liked the role he played in "Collateral" with Tom "The Human Tool" Cruise. What bugs me about the guy is all the other pure, unadulturated crappy ass movies he has been, after winning the academy award for best oscar? Thinking he was some sort of Mega Rap/R&B star and touring with his loser friend Kanye West and being insufferable. Maybe with such a good ensemble cast and Tarantino's direction? This will turn my opinion around about the the meantime? I will take a wait and see approach

and the only reason people shit on it is because it has PG-level violence, and no torture or rape. Seriously, if Sam Jackson would have tortured Chris Tucker to death, DeNiro would have raped Bridget Fonda, and Pam Grier would have slowly slit Jackson's throat causing him to choke and drown in his own blood, people would have deemed it a masterpiece.

    Fantastic...just fantastic news.

    by wacko3205

I've been a huge fan of Tarantino since True Romance. Credited or not...his style hits you in the face like a ton of bricks from start to finish. Loved pretty much everything that he's had a hand in & this is most definitely not going to be the exception to my rule. That rule? Always ride QT's jock no matter what anyone has to say, cry, or piss & moan about it. Oh yeah...I said...& I aint ashamed one bit!!! The man's got skills...& nine times out of ten the majority of the crowd screams that he's a mimicker when it comes to his style...but rip off or not...the man does it with style. Honestly though, if there's anyone out there that handles "blacksploitation" like a true "blacksploiter"...its Tarantino. Jackie Brown was probably my most favorite of his early flicks with Resevoir Dogs coming in second & tied with his bit in Four Rooms. That was fucking priceless. Kill Bill 2 & Inglorious Basterds pretty much blew me outta the water. The fact that the third Kill Bill has finally been announced...well...that little tid bit of info makes me totally nauseous. As much as I love the man's flicks...sometimes he just drags his feet. Sometimes. That being said...its always worth the wait. Pulp Fiction was a perfect example. Can't wait to see how many of Spike Lee's tears hit the floor when QT's flick outgrosses any 5 of his put together. The cast alone pretty much guarantees that. I'm a huge fan of Dicaprio & over the years Foxx has grown on me. Top those two with Christopher Waltz...I'm sold for multiple showings in advance.

Foxx, like Smith, carries a persona with him into each of his movies. And while that can be a good thing, I just don't see it being so with this film.

    Hmm...That's not Anthony Mackie

    by filmstu2005

I was hoping Anthony Mackie had won this coveted role, but I guess Jamie Foxx is a pale second decision of what could have been pure greatness? Either way I think he's a much better fit (as far as looks go) than Will Smith. I swear I always feel like that guy is just trying too hard in everything he does, acting, interviews, charisma... Real actors unite.

    by rookie116

    since The Wire*

  • I have the script, I've read it three times, I think it's probably the best thing Tarantino's ever written - - but as for choosing Jamie Foxx for this part? Foxx can be a good actor, but it's VERY, VERY hard for me to see him in this role. Not to mention - Foxx has a movie star's "p.r." problem - meaning that there are things in this script - in this movie - that I just can't see a big star letting himself do. Some of the things this character does are pretty extreme. That said, maybe Foxx and Tarantino agreed that he'd do what's in the script - most likely, they did before he signed on. But I'm EXTREMELY disappointed in this casting. Tarantino should have chosen an unknown - or at least someone without such a huge off-screen personality. I'm sorry, but when I think of Foxx, I don't see him in this part. This part cries out for someone with much better acting chops. Waltz is obviously perfect for Dr. Shultz. But casting DiCaprio as Candie and Foxx as Django? VERY disappointed.

Not just being an angry fanboy. I'm not the biggest Will Smith fan, but I could have lived with him taking it, just because I realize there's some talent in there SOMEWHERE. If anyone could have cultivated it, it would have been Tarantino. <br><p> But this cunt snot? He doesn't act. He OVER-acts. He's smug as shit and can't even hide it when he's supposed to be playing a down on his luck character. Much like Sean Penn, another actor I don't understand the love for, I can ALWAYS see him acting. He never becomes invisible in the role, and I don't think he'd ever want to be. This is a huge aspect of the movie, and I just think it's a rotten decision. <br><p> But how many fucking Oscars do I have? There ya go. I'll still see it.

Too many paycheck roles...ordinarily, that cellist one with Downey would have garnered him some acclaim, but I think Tinseltown has deemed Ray to be his opus and unworthy of further fellating. I hope he really stretches with this role, and maybe even underplays it, if that's effing possible with a Tarantino script. This is a potent cast. Kudos to all for probably taking a paycut to keep his low budget low. And I am scared shitless what this will be like without Sally Menke...anyone know whom he is grooming to replace her? /sniff...RIP.

Guess Foxx will bring less baggage than Will Smith! People would get flashbacks of Smith in Wild Wild West seeing him in fancy threads! I read the script for Django Unchained recently and found it pretty OK. It felt a lot like reading the script of Inglourious Basterds, in that it felt different from the Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction scripts. I think Waltz has a pretty good role and would love to see Jackson potray the house N! Should be good!

Foxx's sunglasses did all the acting for him in "Ray."

    by fustfick

When you can see Foxx's eyes, you can tell he's faking it big time. He's not a convincing actor. But QT tends to bring out the best in the peeps he works with, so there is certainly hope. Will Smith's "handlers" were way to sketched by the material to let him play Django. Too bad. I love it when huge movie stars get the chance to remind you they're actually really good actors, too.

by workshed THAT would have been perfect casting. And, like I always say, it won't rate amongst the best 'A Band Apart Productions' without Roth. Roth was the reason Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction worked and we're still waiting for another film of that calibre sixteen years on. It's been a long wait QT.

    by DannyOcean01

I'd be happy as larry for Foxx to prove me wrong, and it's not like he hasn't performed well in the past, but Elba was my pick. Don't care about physicality, don't care about comedic elements (actors should have range for all roles), Elba stands out and is a far more interesting casting choice than Foxx. Not sure if the US gets the show, but people need to check out Luther. It might not have the best plots, but Elba's performance is really unique and breathes new life into a tired genre.

Disappointed in Foxx, didn't think QT would get a mainstream actor

    by filmcoyote

Smith was never circling this project. QT write it for Smith and openly said he wanted Smith. Smith took one look at the disgusting, racist screenplay and said no. He was right to do so, it would have been a terrible fit for him as well. Foxx is making a mistake taking this on. It's not just Spike Lee style complaining about the use of the N-word in dialogue. QT can argue the 'in character' argument on that and whether you agree with him or not he can hide behind it. But the screenplay for Django Unchained also uses the N-word in character descriptions, stage directions etc. That cannot be argued for, it is simply revolting racism. No mainstream African American actor should go near this. I'm disappointed in Foxx for doing this. On a side note though - Fassneto, Elba too soft for Django! Seriously?! Elba would beat Foxx down all day one handed without breaking a sweat. You're saying In Living Color, Collateral, Ray, Valentine's Day's Jamie Foxx would be a better bad-ass choice than The Wire, Luther, Losers, Thor's Elba. You my friend are nuts. As nuts as Foxx for taking this racist script.

Sunwukong86, you seem to be missing the point

    by filmcoyote

Obviously QT would want a mainstream actor and his first choice was indeed Will Smith (as i said). My point was i didn't think given the script's casual racial slurs even in stage directions that he would get a mainstream African American actor to do it. Smith turned him down, i expected other mainstream actors to do the same, which is why i'm surprised Foxx accepted the role.

    by cptrios

I don't know what to tell you. If you're going to get this upset about the script, then I can't imagine you'd have watched anything Tarantino did after Pulp Fiction (with his "dead n-word storage" scene). Themes of "blaxploitation" are just one of his things...and something tells me that the guy who single-handedly made Samuel L. Jackson a movie star is unlikely to be a legitimate racist. That being said, it is slightly surprising to see a mainstream black actor take the role, as this is definitely not a racially sensitive movie. Whether or not it's racIST will be the subject of much debate.

  • June 23, 2011, 11:46 a.m. CST

Also, Americans won't embrace a movie about Slavery.

    by ganymede3010

This is one subject that Hollywood refuses to touch. That's because they know no one is going to pay and see it. Despite the magnitude of the star-power, this movie will be a box-office flop. Americans detest even discussing the subject of Slavery. If a movie ever depicted how slaves were really" treated it would make the movie "Saw" look like a Saturday morning Cartoon.

I don't think all Americans are averse to discussing slavery. In fact, it is a discussion worth having for many, as it is an unavoidable aspect of our history. However, "Django Unchained" discusses nothing; it is merely a large budgeted Neo-Blacksploitation pic. Also, if you're looking for the 'SAW of slavery films', Tarantino's piece might just be up your alley.

  • June 23, 2011, 12:02 p.m. CST

Remember THE 25TH HOUR? It was a story writen by a white guy about 3 white guys and, excluding the fact one of them was going to jail for drug dealings, it was a story very much about white guys of a certain age. And the movie was directed by Spike Jonze. Who's not a white guy. Who cares if a movie about slavery is being directed by a white boy? The director could be a chinese who never learned to speak english. It doesn't matter. All it matters is his talent.

  • June 23, 2011, 1:02 p.m. CST

  • June 23, 2011, 1:03 p.m. CST

    by ManInTheMembersOnlyJacket

I think you mean Spike Lee. Spike Jonze is a white guy that made a movie about a white kid and several wild things.

  • June 23, 2011, 1:07 p.m. CST

asi, i don't care if a white guy directs a movie about slavery

I just think that a large percent of whites would not be interested in a slavery revenge fantasy. And I'm not sure that black would be either regardless of who directed it. But that said, as others have noted this is a blacksploitation movie and not really a movie about slavery. I see Tarantino treating the white slave owners as he did the Nazis in Basterds with gruesome results and I'm not sure there is an audience for that. It could be quite controversial.

    It's ok Asi, nobody's perfect

    Spike's a stupid name anyway, unless you're a dog.

  • Actually, i'd love to see a movie where it presented the fact that many black people actually fought on the side of the South. A movie about black characters who found themselves in different sides of the civil war, having to fight fellow blacks. From such a scenario a revenge tale could emerge. And one that would be far less cliched and usual, don't you think?

Could be good, but to be honest

    by Teddy Artery

I'd rather see Tarantino move on to stage plays. His movies have always played liked glorified stage plays because of his dialogue and he could push himself in new ways. The movies are starting to get predictable.

  • June 23, 2011, 1:57 p.m. CST

Is this a movie anyone wants to see?

    by crazybubba

seriously, whats it about? i can't imagine a slavery revenge flick drawing any kind of interest from anyone.

  • Imagine a slave being whipped and demeaned by his white master. Then imagine the white master raping the slave's wife in front of him. Now, imagine him escaping and taking revenge on his slave owner and his cronies: cutting off heads and limbs and scalps to keep as trophies, making love to the slave owner's wife who secretly harbors jungle fever and setting the Confederate flag on fire. This ain't gonna play well in the South. QT better tread carefully.

Exactly. Why bother with a good film, if they'll be standing up and yelling at the screen at all times?

Tarantino was spotted recently at a bar in my hometown

    by frank

of Knoxville, TN. Maybe some of this movie will be set here. Tarantino has some reference to Knoxville in many of his movies. Even though we’d probably be portrayed in a bad light, it would still be cool if there was a Knoxville scene in the movie.

Foxx won't pussyfoot around the material.

    by Batutta

I think Smith would have been too concerned with his image and pulled back from the more salacious aspects. There's something less refined about Foxx and I think that will work for Django.

Those damn Djangos...always in the last place you look. Also, I was going to suggest Dave Chappelle. I think it would turn out like a 2-hour "Time Haters" feature film.

Eh a little disappointed but I do like Foxx

    by Wcwlkr

I was really hoping for Idris Elba. Even though I really do think Will Smith would've killed this. Foxx was definitely my least favorite choice. I think he's a great actor loved him in Ray, Collateral, The Kingdom. Law Abiding Citizen was just ok, but I really think Smith or Elba would've killed this. Oh well I'm still really excited to see this movie. And hope it's better than Basterds, that kind of let me down.

I'm black and I don't talk in theatres during movies.

    by Trevor

    Is that bad?

  • I've had enough Foxx tpo last two lifetimes. Idris Elba would have been my choice.

  • When I look at him all's I sees is Bunz. Speaking of which, Vivica A. Fox did not age well. I think she's looking to be the next Oprah Winfrey, size-wise.

    by HoboCode

I guarantee you when Tarantino's done you won't even realize it's Foxx. Can anyone imagine if Pulp Fiction came out today and they announced Travolta was going to be the lead? You all would shit toy cars, but that has become one of the most iconic roles and performances in film history. So take a Valium and calm down.

On your sugestion i have kept watching GAME OF THRONES, today i finished the 4th episode, and suffice to say, i'm completly hooked on the show. The opening titles alone kills me everytime i watch it. I never, never skip the opening titles. Like i used to with ROME. I think we might be underestimating the market of seeing racists getting their bloody comeuppence, even in the american south. Don't forget, in many states in the south, the black population are the majority in most counties (like in Mississippi). If you ask me, i think Tarantino is into something we aren't aware yet.

  • June 23, 2011, 3:49 p.m. CST

I agree with hobocode. QT haters chill out, please.

    by AsimovLives

Tarantino never does anything by the book. He never makes a movie in which you can predict how it's going to be. Whatever he will going to make, it will be diferent then anything anybody can predict. Which is good. The only predictable thing about a Tarantino movie is that it's going to get some killer dialogue in it. Which is good. And thank fucking god that the fucking Will fucking Smith was not chosen. THANK YOU, CROM!! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you very very very much!

No Appreciation for Foxx? Does Anyone Here Actually Watch Movies?

    by ChaunceyGardiner

I guess I picked up on Foxx when I first saw "Collateral." I had already seen "Ray," and my problems with that film were more to do with the script and absolutely nothing to do with Foxx's performance. It was a film that did not pull me in. Seemed very much like a white man's interpretation of a black musician's life. But "Collateral," for all the attention it gets being a film that coincides with the zenith period Tom Cruise's public outrageousnesses. Odd time. You know, copeing from divorce, remarriage jitters, egomania, escapism into religious zealotry. We all have those moments. But never you mind, you had Mann directing a straight ahead thriller. His first major use of digital filmmaking. There were several things that could have gone wrong, and in some's views, it did. But what I see is one of the great male character roles: Foxx's Max is every bit as entertaining and interesting as Grant's unsuspecting Roger Thornhill. And he takes every character opportunity that Mann gives him and makes Max, not only someone we root for, but someone we actually believe has the guts, intelligence, and stamina to get through the night. He makes a dreamer who gets a chance to live out a fantasy: to be a hero. And it turns, for him, into a nightmare. And yet Foxx gives us a humanity that makes the terror breathtakingly real. All his stupid decisions, his mistakes, his cowardice, it all comprises a man just trying to stay above water. It really is a platform for Foxx, and man, he gets it right. I dare anyone to watch that film and have problems with what he does. I see how other's dislike the film, but that performance is another thing. In a clearly mainstream action film, we get a true piece of acting. Maxx is just a great character; and his scene with Ms. Smith at the beginning is one of the best meet-cutes ever. And just sly and entertaining as all get out. Ten minutes of conversation as awesome as any shoot-out displayed in the film. Just good. I haven't even mentioned any of the other performances, often in films that have major detractors, but whose Foxx's contribution is undeniable. And often there best asset. "Any Given Sunday" (watch that film, then with his other performances and watch how he fleshes out the stereotype of a black professional athlete, how he plays with it, gives it its due and then shatters it, playing Beaman as both terribly intelligent and terribly young), "The Soloist" (watch him juggle those lines, as if each odd throwaway was actually an image, a real thought in his head, but said at lightning fast speed - like a great Jazz musician just riff-riff-riffing), and "Jarhead" (again, another role that is complex and comes so close to stereotype it might be hard to see the immense contribution of Foxx's skill as a tightrope walker, makeing black professional men on film as full dimensional as is rarely possible in Hollywood films). When coupled with a great director, Foxx is unbeatable. This will be a great performance, if not a great film.

Idris Elba is TOO bad ass

    by Kammich

It would've removed any tension or suspense from the script, because we all would've expected Elba to break free, kill 40,000 white people, fuck ALL of their wives, and then coolly smoke a cigar afterwards. And that all would've happened in the first 90 seconds.

  • June 23, 2011, 5:39 p.m. CST

    Eek. That's a real shame...

    by PotSmokinAlien

Foxx is an impersonator, not an actor. That's why he did such a good job in RAY. But the guy can't actually "act" for shit-- like, y'know, create a character, tap into real emotions, and all the other stuff actors do. Smith would have been a lot more Tarantino's speed, seeing as that he's an established actor with a complicated public image for QT to take advantage of. But he, too, has trouble with the whole "acting" thing. I'd put him in the same category as Brad Pitt-- they give it their all, A's for effort all around, but at the end of the day they just aren't ringin' too true on the ol' believability-meter unless they're basically playing themselves (FIGHT CLUB for Pitt, and maybe, um, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire" for Smith? Sorta his finest work...). Pitt was perfectly fine in BASTERDS, but his character was probably the least interesting aspect of the entire movie. Idris Elba, though, I mean Stringer Bell and Idris Elba are two different people as far as I'm concerned. The man is gifted. But GDT plays ball with the studios, doesn't go overbudget, and doesn't make movies that make ya think about anything but monsters and elves. So I guess he gets first pick since he's the safer financial bet. And a motherfucking genius like QT gets studio-mandated prima donna jackasses like Foxx. Gotta love Hollywood.

"Yeah Foxx was great in Collateral and yeeeeah he rocked in Ray but... um..... but.... like.... if you don't count Ray and Collateral and those movies where Foxx was awesome in by giving a great performance and you take all his awesome performances off the table where he rocked as an actor and stuff.... yea.... he SUCKS!!!!!" :-|

How About I Slather On a Little More QT "Hate"?

    by ThatEndDown

Yes, this is going to be a total "hater" post according to you people. Oh well. I'm sure you'll deal with it. Anything with DiCaprio starring gets an automatic pass. Just can't stand watching the kid try to act and only end up looking like he is trying to squeeze out a huge dump. Jamie, the only good performance I have ever seen from him was his performance in Ray. Anything before or since has been less than great. As for the "infallible" QT? I'm still waiting for him to do something good again. The Kill Bill films were fun but don't work together as a whole (and they are one film; don't care what anyone else says). His last two were underwhelming and boring. I get it, Quentin. You love grindhouse/exploitation pictures. I do, too. But do you really need to make film after film after film where you pay homage to your beloved grindhouse flicks? Granted, everything you have done during your entire career has been homage to grindhouse genres. But you used to mask that with great stories, great characters, and great dialogue. I just want to be blown away by one of your films again, like I was with Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and to a lesser extent Jackie Brown.

How old is this character supposed to be?

This is definitely one of my least favorite casting choices from QT, who has always been a genius at casting his movies (Robert Forster in Jackie Brown). There is something I just don't like about Foxx. I actually would've rather seen Smith and I don't particularly care for him either. Too bad it couldn't be an older character, because Morgan Freeman would knock QT's dialogue out of the fuckin park. Hopefully Leo will save the day. Oh yeah.... FIRST!!!

  • June 24, 2011, 3 a.m. CST

I think Foxx is a great choice

I like a lot of his movies. I think he's a great fit. I love this cast, and am pumped for another Tarantino film. He sucks as a singer though. Hopefully it's not a musical.

    Not Bad

    by Hipshot

    1) Tarantino shines at reinventing people. Foxx needs it--Smith does not. He's the biggest star in the world, and probably passed. Not his image, and there are some troubling things that would have pissed off his wifie. 2) "Southern" as opposed to "Western." 3) "Mississippi Burning" wasn't about slavery. Took place in the 1960's, and was a loathsome film mythologizing the role of the FBI in stopping the Klan. 4) This will be a tough sell to large swaths of the audience. There have been FAR more movies about the Civil War than there have been about the only issue that made it inevitable. People don't want to think about it. This is gonna step on a lot of white folks' last nerve.
