ROEPER & PHILLIPS Versus The DC Comics Movies!! Herc's Classic TV Clips Of The Day!!

I am – Hercules!!

It’s a slow week for TV news (and “Green Lantern” opens this week), so we thought it’d be fun to look back on old reviews of DC Comics movies. Sadly, we couldn’t find anything on the “Swamp Thing” movies (which I recall the critics quite liked) or the early “Superman” films.

Two thumbs down for Richard Lester’s “Superman III” (start at the 2:59 mark):

Two thumbs down for Jeannot Szwarc’s “Supergirl”:

A split vote for Tim Burton’s “Batman”:

A split vote for Burton’s “Batman Returns”:

A split vote for Joel Schumacher’s “Batman Forever”:

Siskel finally met a Batman film he couldn’t like with Schumacher’s “Batman and Robin”:

Two thumbs down for Pitof’s “Catwoman”:

Ebert finally met a Batman movie he could like with Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins”:

Ebert and Richard Roeper split on Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns,” which I caught last night on cable and thoroughly enjoyed:

Finally, Michael Phillips and Roeper give two thumbs up to Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”:

    Ebert needs to retire

    by Browncoat_Jedi

Read his Kick Ass review where he is shocked and disgusted by Hit Girl, and yet this is a guy who defends Polanski for drugging and raping a child.

I don't fucking care about your shitty opinions

Superan Returns is hands down the greatest superhero film of all time. Warner Brothers has come out time and time again to say the only reason they are rebooting the franchise is because they can't top Returns with a sequel. It's so fucking good!

So basically DC has made 1 good movie.

i usually agree with ebert, but...

    by JaredP

he is dead wrong on batman. how can anyone like nolans real world take more than tim burtons faithful adaptions?

Ebert is right most of the time (Superman R.)

    by DavidBanner

He nailed that movie perfectly. He loved the first 2 superman movies with Reeve. He loved the Nolan Batman movies. The man is good!

  • June 16, 2011, 11:04 p.m. CST

why the fuck is everyone talking about the jerk...

    by JaredP

when the film siskel & ebert are clearly reviewing is the man with two brains? obviously you people weren't born before 1980 or you would've known that

    I really can't understand

    by RZA

why every single person in the universe has it out for Superman 3... God I love that film! Just as gleefully dumb as most superman comics and yet it has an always hilarious Richard Pryor and plus the Smallville stuff is pretty great (Annette O'Toole as grown-up Lana is one of the best characters of that original series). Also, you've gotta admit that the 'evil' superman stuff is pretty badass. The whole movie had a disctinct cartoonish vibe that just worked. Well, for me anyways... Plus it was shot in Calgary

Supergirl sucked by Helen Slater was perfect for the role

    burtons faithful adaptions?

    by Aquanaut

if you're talking about how ''gothic'' gotham looks in batman... most batman artists weren't drawing it that way until after burton's film. many artists still don't draw it that way. in fact, the coastline of gotham as seen from the plane in batman begins is lifted directly from the comics and dc sources. and faithful to which batman comics? people act as if that's some homogenized thing, when so many artists and writers have had their own take on the characters. and like most of those artists, both burton and nolan respected the core of the mythology while both having their own take. however, burton only has a surface understanding of batman's world. it was nolan who was the most faithful, drawing on specific batman stories and throwing out numerous references to the comics, both in the script and visually. wayne enterprises arkham luscious fox mr. zsasz the narrows the league of shadows carmine falcone joe chill killing bruce's parents i mean, is a suit wearing scarecrow any less faithful than a deformed, sewer-dwelling penguin?

    and add to that

    by emeraldboy

bland and utterly boring. and you have the description of supergirl the movie.

  • Not only can I read full reviews from several film geeks with similar tastes, I can sort through the opinions of dozens of talk backers. It's not 1980 anymore where you have just two cranky guys on Public TV not getting genre films.
