See THE AVENGERS Assembled!! Is This Snyder's SUPERMAN Shield?? And More!!

Merrick here...

The Licensing International Expo is happening now in Vegas.  @theonlyesq is there (website HERE) and is Tweeting up a storm via his/her account.  And within these Tweets...are some fascinating glimpses of preliminary logos and early promotional art for upcoming cinematic properties.  To be clear, this is not intended to be art you'd find on one sheets, etc. Instead, this is the art that'll promote these properties to merchandisers and whatnot.

While more images from the showroom floor are promised today, @theonlyesq has already posted several snapshots - most notably this picture from Marvel showing Joss Whedon's AVENGERS assembled.  NOTE the revised CAPTAIN AMERICA costume and...of course...The Hulk.

Here's what @theonlyesq saw...

The version you see below was cleaned up and EMBIGGENED by one of our readers, MilkMan46, who also called this art to our attention initially.

@theonlyesq also glimpsed THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and (apparently) Zack Snyder's SUPERMAN displays being set-up.  He/she grabbed these shots.  Nothing particularly surprising about THE DARK KNIGHT RISES image, but I'm pleasantly surprised that Superman's "S" hasn't been modified or tricked out in some way. In fact, it feels a tad retro...which is cool...

More as more comes along...

...hope there's enough budget left over to make a spectacular movie. I don't want the climax to be Cap America, Iron Man et al scrapping with half a dozen Skrulls in some Vancouver woods.

I'm having trouble with this version of Hawkeye...

    by aegri_mentis

Clint Barton, before all that Pym Particles crap, was supposed to be the closest to UNAUGMENTED human conditioning and perfection in the Marvel universe. Yet, they go with Renner, who is short, non-muscular, and always has a doughy, bloated look to his face. As much as he gets panned on these boards, if they wanted to go with the compact guy, they could have cast Matt Damon. They probably wanted him, but he would have needed much more money than Renner to make the movie. I like Renner's acting, but I just think he is wrong here.

Is that a pic of what Hulk will look lke?

    by aegri_mentis

Ruffalo said the Hulk's face would be his, and I don't see it there. Hyped for this, though.

  • I can see him maybe being co-leader tops until towards the end of the movie or not until the 2nd movie...I can see him in the first movie more or so as just the straight up soldier taking orders cause well mainly he has been frozen for x amount of years and the whole having to get adjusted to this new world and all of this new stuff...is my main thinking along with 1 or 2 other reason. but I can also see him and Iron Man as kind like Co Captains kinda jockeying (sp?) for position throughout the movie.

Norton Was Poor Casting for Banner

    by Autodidact

Banner is not really supposed to be the most interesting character. And one thing I hated about 2003 Hulk is how they involved Banner's dad in the Hulk's origin. It's not enough to have Banner get caught in a lab accident... he has to be a product of his father's experiments/greed/insanity. This is the most annoying thing to me about Hollywood translations of comic book properties.

  • I still don't think Snyder will get to direct MOS... That movie sounds awful just on casting alone.

Scarlett Johansson is an overrated HACK!

    by JethroBodine

Scarlett Johansson is an overrated HACK! And what's worse, while she may have BOOBIES, and present herself well in an interview/audition she isn't beauty queen material and THATS what's needed to play a fucking superhero. This is a fantasy, not a paycheck opportunity for Hollywood's "passaround tail" of the moment. When will the studios get this???? Look, we got January Jones in X-Men, and she's NICE to look at, and while she can't act her way out of a paper bag, at LEAST it was a decent effort at casting someone who can try and uphold the fantasy. We got Charlize Theron who has looks AND can act, but she gets relegated to Aeon Flux and some completely forgettable Will Smith "superhero" film? Say what you will about Michael Bay, but clued in and EVEN he knows good lookin pussy sells tickets, and he puts it right up there on the screen. And then he makes sure that the lack of acting talent NEVER gets in the way of his movie. JEEZUS Hollywood, dial it in a little bit. If Michael Bay has figured it out, it ain't that hard.

They just used here instead because the other two are sort of silly, super-spy at least is semi-grounded in reality and has been done effectively on screen a million times (especially if you have a Buffy the Vampire/Serenity director who likes kung-fu chicks).

    Iron Man as leader...

    by aegri_mentis

Stark will try to lead the Avengers, and fail due to his alcoholism, he will hand the reigns of control over to the "kid" Rogers. (Keep in mind, biologically, Rogers will be around 20 years old, even in the first Avengers movie.)\ IM3 will have a subplot of Stark overcoming his demons. Avengers II (REvengers?) will show Stark realizing Rogers can handle it, and only being a support role for Rogers' decisions...

Thanks. It's a compelling offer, but I'll have to pass. Nice to see other people get it, though. Hey, all of you morons bitching about the helmet or mask or whatever? Go watch some Simpsons. The character called Comic Book Guy? Yeah, he's making fun of *you*.

  • My reasoning was that Crudip looked exactly like hulk in the face and also a perfect scientist. He could have basically scaled up during his transformation and it would have still looked like Crudip. Woulda been incredible.

    WTF? No Ant-Man?!?

    by Continentalop

What is it about the ability to shrink to the size of an insect yet retain your normal human strength that makes it so people don't respect you?

  • June 14, 2011, 11:38 a.m. CST

And why Hawkeye has no mask and Thor no helmet

    by Continentalop

Because comics and movies are two different mediums. Mask and helmets work in comics because they characters are drawn, therefore they are not that indistinguishable. In movies, the exact opposite thing happens; conceal a characters features with a mask or head gear and he becomes less distinguishable. So I understand why they decided not to have those two wear things that conceal distinguishable features (especially in a movie where two other characters, Iron Man and Captain America, are required to wear them). Still, wish they came up with something for Hawkeye to make him a little more visually interesting.

  • But since I thought back in 83 that the 3rd superman movie should have been Superman Vs Batman. And then I had to wait like 30 fucking years for Hollywood to put 2 superheroes together. I mean fuck. The fact that we've never seen Spiderman simply swing past a window like dumbo cameo in Roger Rabbit. I mean how fucking lame is this fucking planet? How many people in charge of good properties actually have any fucking sense whatsoever in their heads? Not many right. I mean if I had only the rights to a few characters like fox and their Xmen in name only bullshit- I would have the shadow of a guy that looked like spiderman swing by. If anyone from marvel complained I would say that's AssHat Man.

    better female heroine

    by Hedgehog000

Can't we do better than the Black Widow. Not only is her character not that interesting, on a team with Thor, IM, Hulk, Cap, and even Hawkey, she's totally useless. At least the Wasp (or better yet Giant Girl) or even the Scarlet Witch added some unique capabilities. Now, we'll have to sit thru the inevitable arc where they find some way for her to do something while we all wait for the next scene with the Hulk smashing stuff.

Avengers with helmets/masks should be called WINGS.

    by Carl XVI Gustaf

Cap A has wings on his mask. Thor has wings on his helmet. Iron Man had that wings/eyebrow thing on his helmet in the early days. Wasp... yea. Yellow Jacket has wings for shoulder pads and as Ant Man he rides a winged ant. Namor has wings on his feet (makes real sense for water people). Hawkeye has wings for eyebrows. Falcon is so very bewinged. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch kinda have wingy hair things... SHIELD logo has wings.

    by rev_skarekroe

This "Thor MUST have a helmet! Hawkeye MUST have a mask! Flames on Optimus = nipples on Batman" nonsense is so phenomenally silly. Hey, you guys may be interested to know that they did a Thor movie recently where he only wore a helmet for about 30 seconds. Turns out, the public didn't boycott it due to the title character's lack of headgear. Go figure!

Hulk and Thor weren't flops, but they didn't do nearly as well as the Iron Man films, and Hawkeye and Black Widow are secondary characters. It's marketing, people.

    by matineer

A helmet is not the sole costume element applicable only to comic pages. Were there helmets in 300? He (Thor) looks like he's doing Shakespeare (which is fine) without it. He could wear it for a few minutes, right?

IM as leader is inline with the comics

    by Hedgehog000

In the early Avengers, IM was the one who set up the team then passed on leadership. I think it's fairly traditional. Not to mention IM being the most successful of the movies and Robert Downey easily being the biggest star. Now, if the Cap movie is huge this summer, look for that poster to change pretty quick.

    Superman 'S' untampered ? FANTASTIC NEWS !

    by Se7en

Who cares about the Avengers. Superman's 'S' untampered ? LONG LIVE SNYDER. The man RULES.

  • In Batman Begins you had the bat symbol, although "new" at the time, kinda bronze and rusty looking, as if a work in progress, symbolizing that this was, ahem, the beginnings of Batman. The Dark Knight had the symbol pretty much destroyed; exploding from all the pressure and stress he was feeling. This one is complete and polished, showing that the batman legend (although maybe not Bruce Wayne himself) will survive The Dark Knight Rises intact. One of the things I've been wondering about tdkr is how the symbol/beginning would play out; the first was the aforementioned bronze and after the beginning company symbols like the wb's, it showed all the bats flying around and coming together to form a huge bat symbol slowly getting bigger or towards the viewer. The Dark Knight used the blue fire, which if memory serves me right, is higher in temperature than red flame, and the flames slowly formed a bat symbol that approached toward the viewer. When it was rumored Riddler was the villain, I thought the beginning title sequence would be green, or maybe it might be red to show how intense tdkr would be, but was wondering how the bat symbol would approach the viewer. Anyway this *kinda* answers my question, but I am still looking forward to how the beginning unfolds. It makes sense to still use blue, since The Dark Knight used blue and this movie adds the word Rises to it, as if building on what that movie accomplished, despite it seeming like it would be influenced a lot by Batman Begins what with young Ra's Al Ghul in it; still, I wonder if it will be a water motif, maybe a cloudy sky with the clouds becoming the bat symbol? Also, it's nice to see Hulk as part of the Avengers, hopefully they have a coo' villain in mind for them to face. If it sucks, well I don't like how jw fired my girl crush Charisma Carpenter off Angel so at least this'll cool his sails for a bit. And the Superman symbol looks like something they just added to promote the film, not something that will necessarily be featured in the upcoming Cavill film.

    AFFIRMATIVE ACTION FOR MOVIES

    by TopHat

That's the only reason for the "Black Widow" to be in this movie; they HAVE to have a female character. I don't care how she is in the comics, Johansson has already made this character the definition of "meh". There is no way the character will come close to Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, AND Iron Man. Scarlett Johansson is a mediocre actor at best. Emily Blunt would have brought some class and geniune acting abilities to the role. Johansson is not even as attractive as the mags, entertainment shows, and geeks desperately try to make her out as being. (Personally, I think it comes from the fact that she's one of three actresses working in Hollywood that actually has breasts) We're going to have to cut back and forth from the REAL superheros to her stupid side story (which will have ALIEN: RESURRECTION Whedon wit) I've been saying this for a while, but it bares repeating: This film will be a rip-off. They're not going to show the characters doing stuff as much as we what; it will probably be a bait-and-switch film where we THINK we're getting an Avengers movie, but, instead get a S.H.I.E.L.D. one. Nick Fury, Hawkeye, and Black Widow will be the main characters and the rest will be supporting ones. A good portion of the movie will have to do with getting Captian America woke up and/or getting Thor back to earth. The Hulk won't "Hulk out" until the end. And Stark will act as a "consultant" like Fury suggested at the end of IRON MAN 2; he'll be a kind of "Q" character, making weapons and stuff like that for the team while giving sarcastic remarks. "Iron Man" will only show up at the very end. Yet, the geeks will make excuses and the ones pointing out reality will be called "trolls". Like always.

    New Cap looks awesome.

    by Yelsaeb

But I still hate his costume in the upcoming movie. It may look better on film and in action, but it looks too modern and bulky. I think it would've been awesome if they just went with the design that was in the Ultimate Avengers, the WW2 uniform that was just dyed red, white, and blue. That was cool retro Rocketeer type crap right there.

Yeah, ScarJo did some of the stuff but we was most certainly helped by wires and a healthy dose of a good stunt double IMO.

  • that's a good thing...speaking of which I wish we could see the heroes with the mask off and the mascara on, it would be imo more realistic, like when Keaton took off his mask in batman returns (notice how he didn't have mascara on before he took it off) or when Christian bale was feeling down after rachel got blowded uppy and he was back in his penthouse. Not that I mind them not having it, as it would look a little weird, but I always thought it was coo' to see keaton in the Batman blu ray with the mask off and his eyes darkened.

I agree that they need at least one female hero - I'd even be fine with two. I'm just arguing the choice. The Wasp (or better yet her Giant Girl alter ego from the all ages Avengers), Ms Marvel, or even the Scarlet Witch don't have to have a rigged "special" moment to convince us of their value - they have superpowers. The BW is just a spy chick with some martial arts abilty - yawn.

    mattman, re: Green Lantern

    by catlettuce4

Of course they are trying to hide it. They have been ever since the first trailer was met with disastrous reception. The latest trailers all show the effects and not much else, no character, no story. We are promised epic space effects and aliens, they are afraid to show the rest most likely because it is still full of dreadfully groan-inducing bad humor and other bad-ness. And the Avengers... huh, I think it will be huge. Even if the movie is not so good it will be THE event to see, no matter who you are, or what demographic. It's going to pull everyone in just to see the heroes and actors all together.

    by catlettuce4

It already is, I suppose. Just wait till it gets closer to release. It reminds me of things like (for example) the Matrix Reloaded, where for some odd reason everyone gets convinced it will be the second coming, but in fact it will just be a movie. There's basically NO WAY the Dark Knight sequel will live up to expectations and hype set by The Dark Knight itself. Prepare to be underwhelmed if you are setting yourself up for something better than the previous one.

These images, logos, etc, while they MAY represent what we will see from these films, are really just early images used to sell to the licensees. Justice League will never happen...

    by Turd_Has_Risen_From_The_Gravy

because it's dependent on too many factors that won't line up. First, Bale will be unlikely to return as Batman without Nolan. Secondly, Zak the Hack will probably put the final nail in Superman's coffin (will that character ever actually be interesting onscreen?). Green Lantern could easily bomb since it looks absolutely ridiculous. And why are they being so slow developing their other characters's movies? You'd think a Wonder Women movie would be on the cards by now, since she's about the next most iconic character on their roster and one that ordinary people actually know. Characters like The Flash, Aquaman and Green Arrow are all lame to the general public, and it doesn't look like DC is going to rectify that anytime soon. By the time they get movies of these characters out, the general public will be sick to the back teeth of superhero movies and the boom will have bust, plus all the other actors (Bale, the new Superman, Reynolds, etc.) will have moved on.

    The White Avengers!

    by Tom Fremgen

So is it a good thing or a bad thing that Marvel leaves their heroes as is, and DC always tries it increase the minority count? Aquaman replaced with Hawkgirl and John Stewart used over Hal Jordan in the JL, Aqualad now black (first created for Young Justice but appeared in Brightest Day first), Blue Beetle now Hispanic. All Marvel has is a black Nick Fury- who was originally created for the Ultimate Universe, so I don't think that really counts as a replacement character. Does Marvel not care, or does DC care too much?

How do the rest stack up to Thor?

    by DreadPirateRoberts

Seriously, as portrayed in the films, Thor may not be an actual god, but close enough. I am not talking about whether you liked the movie or not. Just look at his big fight scene against the frost giants towards the beginning. At later against the Destroyer once he has his hammer. Thor + Mjolnir equals invincible as portrayed in the film. Ironman is a cool guy in a high tech suit with some cool weapons, but almost taken down by a shirtless guy with a nasty whip. We have not see Captain America yet, so I can't say. Black widow just knows some martial arts. Hawkeye is a talented marksman, but really should not be able to match up if he is relying on standard weapons for damage, even good ones. The Hulk seems to be the only one who could hold his own in damage potential and toughness to Thor, maybe. So my point is, if you send in Thor, how much help can the others REALLY provide in the Marvel movie universe?

    WATCH YOUR HEAD, CAPTAIN SEXY!

    by BSB

    So Hawkeye is the traitor?

  • This is what they've been climbing towards for years now. Marvel, having already used up all of their big franchises, have painted themselves into a bit of a corner. This is their Mt. Everest. What happens when you get to the top? Do you go back down or do you build a giant "suck it" sign pointed at everybody beneath you? Let's look at the options. - Iron Man 3.... Considering how bad #2 was, I'm not counting on any miracles here. - Captain America 2.... All depends on how good #1 is. - Thor 2.... Lots of potential, but only if they balance the Midgard and Asgard scenes well. Or just dump the Earth stuff and go full on Asgard. - X-Men: First Class 2..... Would be an awesome movie, but the first one isn't doing too well at the box office. - Hulk 3.... Deader than disco. Not gonna happen unless Ruffalo and Hulk both impress in Avengers. - Fantastic Four reboot... Maybe if they get it back from FOX - Daredevil.... He's not even an A+ character at Marvel these days. I don't think that he'll be one at the box office. He sort of lives on the fringe of the Marvel U. - Spider-Man 4.... I don't care what you call it, who you cast, or what hip new spin you put on it. All signs point to meh. Even with Lizard appearing, this franchise is broken. Marvel's in a pickle. What's left? What new, untapped properties can you do that movie audiences will care about? Personally, I suggest that, after all is said and done, Marvel focus their energies on bringing some credible live action TV versions of the properties associated with the big film franchises. I don't care if they're ongoing or TV movies. Give TV some of that Marvel love and let the film universe recharge a bit. For TV I'd suggest... - Avengers..... SHIELD or Great Lakes Avengers. On the one hand, SHIELD could be an awesome, high tech version of 24. On the other hand, GLA could really stand out as a Marvel version of the Tick. A superhero comedy done right. - Captain America..... Howling Commandos. You don't really need Nick Fury for this. You've got this band of soldiers in WW2 and they take on the most impossible missions. Inglorious Basterds for TV. - Thor..... Thor. Hear me out here. You don't have to go with Thor as he is today. Go with a younger, teenaged version. Focus on his early years as a teen and his adventures with Loki, Sif, and the Warriors Three. Think Young Hercules. - X-Men..... Either X-Factor or New Mutants. One the one hand, you've got a team of superhuman private investigators. X-Men meets X-Files. Seems like a straightforward pitch. On the other hand, you've got the New Mutants. Another teen friendly property. Young & beautiful types who are inexperienced freaks and walking time bombs. Gossip Girl + X-Men + Smallville. Definitely a winner for the CW. - Hulk.... She-Hulk. This is a tough one, from a VFX perspective. If you can nail her look on TV without fucking it up then you have a superhuman version of Ally McBeal. This is the one superhero franchise perfectly suited for David E Kelly. Just look at Dan Slott's amazing run. It was a superhero book, but it was also a legal dramedy. - Fantastic Four.... The Inhumans. Displace them from their home on the moon and have them relocate to Earth. The silent Black Bolt. The crazy haired Medusa. The behemoth Gorgon. The martial arts master Karnak. And so on. Pit them against Maximus the Mad and a band of Terrigan mist baddies. Bring in the Unspoken. If you play with the Buffy concept of one "big bad" per season, you could make this work for more than a few. - Daredevil..... Go with Daredevil. He's much more suited to cable TV than the big screen anyway. Lots of high octane action against drug lords, hitmen, ninjas, and so forth. Alternatively, do a show about Kingpin. Make it a crime drama from the perspective of these goodfellas. A story about one man standing atop a criminal empire and his attempts to fight off challengers to his rule, the law, and the vigilantes. - Spider-Man..... I mean, wtf do you go from here? You can't use Spidey himself. Do you go with any of the Spider-Girl or Spider-Woman variants? Do you go with a show focused on the Daily Bugle or Frontline, focusing on the reporters view of the Marvel U? Do you go with Spider-Man 2099 and go to that next level? This is one franchise that's hard to spin-off to live action TV since you run the risk of dilluting the core film property. I can imagine other franchises working better on TV than film. - Power Pack... ABC Family - Ant-Man... SyFy or AMC - Luke Cage... Spike, FOX, or BET - NextWave: Agents of HATE.... SyFy And so on. I was always saying that HBO or Showtime needs to just work out a deal with WB and whatever other properties and make a Justice League series. These cable premiere channels have the best shows(Game of Thrones, Sopranoes, Dexter, True Blood, Tudors, Californications, ROME etc..) and with multiple seasons to work with (although only 10-13 episodes per season) at an hour per epidisode, they can really build some story and have a great hit on their hands as opposed to a one time try at the big screen of only 2 1/2 hours to work with. Season one of Justice League doesn't even have to be the team most of the time. The build up of story and introductions of characters can get the proper care they deserve because of the multiple movie quality episodes, plus once season two comes around and the premise is established, Justice League can kick ass!

Cable TV being better has more to do with...

    by cookepuss

... the very simple fact that they don't have to appeal to these Americal Idol sized veiwerships. Since most cable TV shows see lower numbers, they can target a more hardcore viewer. The don't have to worry about people who stick to the basic broadcast programming. Instead, they can focus more on genre shows instead of reused cookie cutter crap that has been plaguing network for decades. Cable clearly subscribes to the "if you build it, they will come" mentality. And, with fewer restrictions, they don't have to pull as many punches. That's why we get shows like the fast and brutal "Spartacus" or the slower burn "Walking Dead." They don't have to follow the traditional rules and it works to their benefit. I'm not saying that there's nothing good on network. There is. It just tends to follow a formula. Network TV rarely ever takes that "fuck it" attitude and goes for broke. Of all the comic properties, I'd love to see Kirkman's "Invincible" go live action. I was watching that old movie "Sky High" the other day and it occurred to me that it was essentially a PG-rated "Invincible", right down to the very Mark Grayson and Atom Eve-esque Michael Angarano and Danielle Panabaker. I'd kill to see something like that, but with the clever storytelling and ultraviolence that Kirkman does so well. It would totally be at home on cable, especially given how Spartacus has gone balls out with the violence these past few years.

It explains that Tony Stark is the leader of this version of the Avengers. That poster also implies that Ant Man and Wasp join the Avengers by the end of the first movie and are introduced in that movie as well. My guess is since they've been already introduced as SHIELD agents in IM2 and Thor, they're basically on the team to keep tabs on everybody and make sure they do what they're told. A further guess is that Stark and Cap will tell them to chill out and let them work as a team.

    For rebeck2...

    by Trevor

Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up. -C.S. Lewis, "On Three Ways of Writing for Children" (1952)

    by Rebeck2

Hey, thanks for the literary quote, but it's misplaced. I have no trouble with "childish" things - I'm a lover of Pixar and James Bond and gory horror movies and Zatoichi and corny musicals...and on and on, I'm not embarrassed of my tastes in the least. See, I'm a REAL movie geek - I like ALL types of film. Unlike those who call themselves a movie geek but really they only like superhero films. I don't mind superhero movies, I even own a few - the first Superman, Batman Begins, X-Men 1 &2, Spiderman 2, and Iron Man. More than a few! But I'm getting fucking tired of them because as a steady diet from Hollywood, non-stop 24/7, it's just a tad fucking much. It's like only eating gummi bears for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I want some sophisticated and yes adult (as in intelligent and well-told) genre films like they made in the prehistoric days of the 1970s and 80s. I just want something original that doesn't come from a fucking comic book. Too much to ask?

That poster looks fantastic! + thoughts on helmets, masks, etc.

    by kevred

That looks terrific, like a comic book come to life. The classic overall effect of it overcomes all the little compromises they have to make to do this in Hollywood ("realistic" costumes, recognizable faces, etc.). Speaking of that, I would guess that's why they don't have a helmet for Thor or a mask for Hawkeye. This is marketing, not a scene from the movie. They want people to look at the poster and say, "hey, I recognize that guy, he's Thor!" Not "hey, there's some guy in a helmet". Similarly, "hey, there's that guy from Hurt Locker!", not "hey, there's a guy in a mask I've never seen before". Looked at that way, it's pretty simple. How many of us thought we'd get to this point, where all of these characters have been done at least reasonably well, and we'd get a poster image like this? Even the nit-pickiest should admit this is pretty darn successful.

  • Black Widow's a boring, mostly useless character to begin with. Johansson's portrayal, while aesthetically pleasing, is distractingly implausible and downright annoying. A tough, powerful woman with comparable powers to the big boys would be more interesting and - because they'd more easily be able to fit her into the "real" action - less pandering. We all know that there's going to be some tired, ham-fisted way to shoehorn Black Widow not only into the thick of things, but into the thick of things in a way that shows up all the powerful men (this is Whedon, after all, and he follows this routine with a truly tiresome repetition). I'd much rather see a simply stronger woman, like the Witch or Marvel, who could be emphasized less annoyingly. Cap, as the ultimate physical specimen/athlete/natural fighter, and Hawkeye, with his nearly-superhuman bow skill, cover all the ground that Black Widow does. She's window dressing. We don't need or want Buffy in the Avengers, Joss. You should be giving us an inherently powerful heroine, not one we have to bend the story around to make her work. (Call this a preliminary and hopefully unnecessary complaint. I'd love to be proven wrong by Whedon, and this is the only real bummer of the lineup for me. Not even remotely enough to spoil the film or make me not enthused for this - but enough to say, "if you're going to go this far, why not *really* do it right?")

comes from a couple of places. For one thing, it has been rumored by comic sites like CBR for a while, citing various newspapers as sources. Then again, these are also the same sites and publications that have rumored this movie to also involve the Kree and/or Skrulls. However, the most convincing evidence would be the appearance of the Infinity Gauntlet at various shows. Take a gander: http://tinyurl.com/6cws358 This prop, afaik, appeared in Odin's weapons room in Thor. However, some are suggesting that this may be the major plot device that brings the Avengers together. I'm not so sure either way. This seems to be in direct conflict with the appearance of the Cosmic Cube at the end of Thor. Whatever the case, it looks like Avengers is gonna get a little cosmic in some form or another.

  • The first trailer was indication enough that Green Lantern was going to be a disappointment. Geoff Johns promised it was going to be awesome and that he approved of the film... what a hack. Geoff Johns gets fired if GL fails, right?

    by nursey

This guy spent the last year taking credit for the creative direction of the Green Lantern film and now the movie is proving to be a bona fide artistic failure with a nearly $300 million negative cost. And Johns has tweeted exactly twice in the last two weeks--a sign that he must feel somewhat guilty about how awful the movie has turned out. So the question is, will WB/DC hold him accountable? He's been kept away from the Batman films by the Nolans but he was THE guiding force behind this GL debacle and Time Warner shareholders will not be happy with a write-down that obliterates a quarter or two's worth of profits.

It's a un-predictable industry, thats for sure.

I agree with the first post:

I'm not a huge Snyder fan, and say what you will about him, but the guy does his BEST to emulate the source material. Something that can only be said about a few directors working today. I think that part, at least, is pretty cool. I wasn't a Superman Returns hater, but I can't say I loved it either. So, I'm expecting this to be better than that - and I think Snyder can pull it off.

Thank you for clarifying your statement. While I agree with your assessment that Hollywood is relying on too many media adaptations and not enough original properties, I feel that the income that those films make will not influence a changing of the guard. Superhero movies, for the most part, are hot sellers.

If DC were smart, they'd greenlight a Victor Stone movie.

    by ganymede3010

He's one of those B characters like Iron man who has the potential to be a much better movie than one of DC's a-list characters like Superman. All they have to do is cast Will Smith and a proven director and this is easily a 500 million + franchise.
