    by i'malanpartridge

This is a shit piece of news though.
However you're right about Amoldovar - All about my mother was brilliant...so heartfelt and touching.
And all the men want to women or are complete failures as men. Hmmm...And European distribution does suck...I saw The Limey in Paris in the summer and it's only just been released here in the UK. WHY? WHo knows.

    by hotspur

are you bored? I mean you've been posting like a hundred times already... sorry, just kidding. And yes you're right about Almodovar. And another thing. Can't you buy region 1 DVDs were you live? That's weird isn't it. I live in Europe and I have no problem with that at all.

the yuppie thing! My mission is to get people to understand that it's completely bogus to buy a DVD player that can only play region 2 DVDs. They might as well save their money then!

I went to the preview of AMERICAN BEAUTY at the same cinema in Sydney about a couple of weeks ago, where Sam Mendes stuck around for an hour answering questions. He was a f***in' nice guy too. Not sure what Ripley is like but I thought the trailer looked pretty interesting. I will be there for this I think. Good to see pretty boys like Damon doing something a bit challenging. Is he any good?

Perhaps Darth Talkback's sudden rise will be smited by...me! The mighty and powerful Darth Blumpkin. There are a few too many Darths lurking around here. And now with Darth Bond making a name for himself, the gauntlet must be thrown. After all..."Always two there are...no more no less."

    by darth blumpkin

Artaud, have you heard that Lucas is planning on casting Scott Baio in a special role as a Jedi master? I think it was his demonstration of Force-like mastery in "Zapped!" that won him over.

Hey guys, I just recieved an e-mail from some TalkBacker, I assume, about rewrites on SW2 and SW3. I personally haven't seen the site yet, so don't coming yelling at me if the stuff's wrong. But take a look at it anyways.--Saulot--http://www4.50megs.com/paladin/

Just checked out the site. Before anyone gets too excited, these are not actual Lucasfilm rewrites, but instead are fan treatments and a fan rewrite of Episode I. Makes for some fun reading, though.

    Australia

    by lazarus long

Has THE IRON GIANT opened in Australia yet? Because it would be cool if he came to present the film, and did a Q & A session. I'm sure there's a lot that could be learned, not just about the film, but about the way human beings treat each other. I like the way this Talkback has segued into things completely unrelated to the topic. Although Episode 2 and 3 will be filmed in Australia...that counts, I guess. I read that Variety article on Passengers also, and it sounds like one hell of a film. But aren't there a lot of people who indulge in drugs and sex all weekend anyway, without benefit of hosting an alien life form in their bodies? I hope Fincher doesn't do this before Black Dahlia. I'm going to see either Topsy-Turvy or The Third Miracle today. Any suggestions (and yes, Supernova is out of the question)?

(I'm Darth Bond but I forgot my password at work so I'm posting as my other alias here at home). Darius: Ok, answer to your question, I got a friend who got one, it was imported, but he is asian and he had connections. I bought the creative DVD encore x5 while in Paris, and after downloading a patch it was region code free. I am sure you'll be able to find one, they are not illegal in the UK I don't think. Just ask around.
Reverend: Your description of passengers is exactly what yahoo news said (where I got my info from). wouldn't it be cool if Ed Norton played the lead, Cameron Diaz could be the girl.

You nailed it, it was Dazed and Confused, a movie popular in my high school and one which I take the credit for discovering and showing my old mates (I even showed it in math class back in 96/97). A 100 Harry Dollars gets you an hour alone with Harry, 800 Harry Dollars gets you the whole night. Just tell me when you want to pick up your price. Check ya later.

    Silverberg sucks

    by scott1458

yes, it's a slow news day. Anyway, I'm surprised that Fincher is grabbing a Silverberg story. The guy has written a shitload of novels/short stories, but they are weak. He tries really hard to be like the golden age writers, but falls short.

He's best as an editor, when he puts those "The year 1971 in Science Fiction" mega books.

I mean Dick wrote fantastic stories without depending on sex too much. Just my opinion.

Then again, it really doesn't matter, cause they were able to take a lame ass story by Campbell and make the great moive, The Thing.

  • To the guy who said that we should all go to the movies - which one should be watch ? No watchable movie has been released in the last two weeks now. The only ones I havent seen are Girl, Interrupted, Supernova and The Cradle Will Rock. Cradle is the most watchable one of these three but just thinking about it puts me to sleep. By the way, do NOT watch The Hurricane - it's boring. And just so you know - Magnolia and Ripley kick ass, Galaxy is fun but nothing else, and Any Given Sunday is the more funner (if there is such a word).

    by darius25

Which of these sort of similarly themed movies is better: Magnolia or American Beauty. I say American Beauty is better cause its funnier. Off topic, would anyone else shoot themselves than rather watching Supernova ? And also.... what is the other movie someone mentioned with Topsy Turvy which is opening today - something called The Third Miracle or something like that ?

    by dagny_t

Does Harry know that you're pimping him out to us talkbackers in return for questionable movie trivia? I dunno how he'd feel about that...oh well, you are probably out enjoying your Friday night already and will never read this anyway. I am still stuck at work (I know, I didn't take my own advice) but SOON off to see Galaxy Quest. I'm SO behind in my movie-viewing, although I have seen Talented Mr. Ripley and have to disagree with the guy above, I thought it was pretty good. But hey dude, since you thought Straight Story and Titus were so great, I'll forgive. Maybe Ripley just isn't everybody's cup o' tea.

This Talk Back is NOT Dead Yet!!!

    by lazarus long

In response to the previous poster, I was deciding between Topsy Turvy and The THird Miracle to see today. The Third Miracle is by Agnezia Holland (sp), and stars Ed Harris as a Chicago priest who is called out of "retirement" to investigate a possible miracle. The daughter of the alleged miracle worker is Anne Heche, mischief ensues. It sis supposedly very good; the indie newspapers that are usually very cynical and critical of mainstream stuff thought it was really well done. But I chose to see Topsy Turvy, which has been chosen by the New York Film Critics Circle (among others) as the Best Film of the Year. I enjoyed it very much; it was cool to go behind the scenes of Gilbert and Sullivan on their production of The Mikado, which looks like a very cool opera. Jim Broadbent was AWESOME as Gilbert. However, I can't say it was the best of the year (don't think it would even make my top 10) in that I just didn't feel it was aggressive enough. It's not that a slower, old fashioned film can't have an effect on me (I thought All About My Mother was one of the 10 best of the year), but maybe it was hyped too much. I'll give credit to Mike Leigh for pulling off a musical, but theoretically, all the singing is done in the guise of putting on an actual musical, so it's not like Singin' in the Rain where someone just decides to break into song. I don't think we're going to see that again for a while...although Woody Allen's Everyone Says I Love You was brilliant, and got a decent audience....so what am I trying to say here? Oh yeah, don't listen to the guy who didn't like Mr. Ripley; it's one of the year's best, and if only all films could be this "pretentious" (is this what we call everything European and intelligent?), we might get rid of crap like Wild Wild West and The Haunting (sorry again, Harry). Also, not that anyone needs to know this, but I'm pretty drunk right now, and there's nothing better than running into an ex at a bar and discovering she wants you back. How the tides do turn...
