Two Views on BOOGIE NIGHTS

Published at:  May 24, 2007 6:54:39 AM CDT

Mr. Nakatomi wrote me about a film he saw called BOOGIE NIGHTS. I have been
hearing very strong word of mouth on this film, and if you know more please feel free to
write about it.

I just saw a BOOTLEG of "Boogie Nights" and let me start
off by saying, "It's cool!".

Set in Hollywood in the 70's, this film follows characters
in the porno film industry. The "R" rating may be very
hard to come by. Marky Mark shows "it" in a key scene.
It'll be interesting to see what gets cut. But the director's
cut or foriegn release should be good.

The casting for this movie is great; among the players are
Burt Reynolds, Julie Ann Moore and Marky Mark as the young
and well-endowed porno star.

Burt Reynolds, playing Jack ..., a famous porn director, gives
the best performance I've ever seen him do. (No kidding)
The scene following Marky Mark as he debuts as "Dirk Diggler"
on his first porn shot is excellent; funny and hard-hitting.
(please excuse pun)

But it's ALMOST a date flick. During the 70's sequences, the
music, fashion, and lingo really makes you want to join the
70's revival crowd. (Can you say decadence?)
As the film continues into the 80's (insert ominous musical
riff here), the characters are plunged into hard times and
the film pulls no punches. Again, the fashion and lingo are
expertly placed and (warning) you may have a flashback or two.
But, hard-hitting, yes. There were times (like a scene
of a porn film "experiment" or a robbery scene) where the
most intense situations develop and I was left to simply rub
my eyes and say, "Oh sh*t!". (I had the same kind of reaction
from scenes in Resevior Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Full Metal Jacket, etc.)
The soundtrack is classic and very groovable. 70's revival
or not, I would expect this soundtrack to sell well.

Wish I could remember more. Hope this helps.

By the way the word on Burt Reynolds is very strong on this, including people saying
"oscar buzz" but that don't mean crap till about February, if you hear it then, THEN
maybe believe. In the meanwhile take a look at this sheek Sheik and his look at BOOGIE
NIGHTS:

Call me Sheik. It's my middle name.

I've just come home from a world premiere screening of BOOGIE NIGHTS
at the Toronto International Film Festival, and allow me to say, it
was truly a captivating film. The picture examines the porn industry
in the late 70's and early 80's, and especially centres on the rise and
fall of fictional porn star Eddie Adams AKA Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg
AKA Rapper Marky Mark). Director Paul Thomas Anderson has put together
a truly spectacular film that is authentic in its representation of the
disco era. The music, the cars, and of course, the clothes effectively
takes us back. One particularly funny moment has Dirk Diggler proudly
displaying his butterfly collared shirt saying, "do you know what this
is? Real Italian Nylon."

The film portrays porn directors more concerned with mesmerizing
audiences with plotlines and twists; rather than displaying senseless
acts of unadulterated sex. Burt Reynolds plays director Jack Horner
who strikes it rich with a porn parody of James Bond. In his
pornographic series, he has his star Dirk Diggler torture his female
informants into spilling the beans by sexing them to death. BOOGIE
NIGHTS has a real sense of humour; but, it's exceptionally dark at
times. There are many haunting scenes of excessive drug use and brutal
violence that share the same intensity as De Palma's ScarFace or
Scorsese's Casino. The porn sequences are respectfully shot, but are
never whitewashed (expect to see an extreme close-up of Wahlberg's
penis).

The performances are first rate. In my book, Mark Wahlberg has
solidified himself as a true actor. His portrayal as Diggler/Adams
will undoubtedly bring him many serious film offers. Burt Reynolds
is nothing less than outstanding. He was the only redeeming feature
in last year's STRIPTEASE, and should receive a well deserved Oscar
nomination for BOOGIE NIGHTS.

The soundtrack was awesome, and is bound to be a bestseller with its
disco and rock classics. I know I'll be buying it. I found myself
singing along with Rick Springfield's Jesse's Girl.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson, Actors Mark Wahlberg and Heather
Graham (Drugstore Cowboy) were in attendance at the festival screening
of the film. They graciously answered the audience's questions at the
end of the movie. At one particular moment, Wahlberg personally
thanked Anderson for taking a chance on him and for finally putting
to rest "all that Marky Mark shit".

    Boogie Nights

    by katrin

    HI,
I found a link to your page in the current issue of KONR@D, a quarterly internet magazin in Germany.
Your comment on Boogie NIghts is very much detailed and even though it has been some months ago that I watched it, I was immediately "back in the movie theatre seat" when you pointed to the atmosphere that the movie spreads out. It is not only the quotations and the description of the characters that make a critical review validable.
It is the to that period of time, even when you were quite young way back in the 70s.
    Thanks again
    Katrin

    Relax people...

First of all, Leo is a stuck up has been...I predict The Beach will be his downfall. To say that he has considered playing Anakin is a joke, because of several reasons: Lucas has not started casting yet, Lucas knows what he's doing, and wouldn't do something like this, which I'm sure he knows would really tick off the franchise's fan base, and the fact that Ewan McGregor and DiCRAPrio don't get along at all. Wait a second...I know...Cast Leo as Anakin, let Ewan kick his ass around a bit, then dump him and get a talented unknown! Sound logical to anyone else?

How come most of the time travelling doesn't start til 2000. Was there any talkback functionality when these articles were first posted? Probably not. I didn't start hitting AICN until the 2000s . . .
