Mondo Tees and Shepard Fairey's THEY LIVE Poster!

Published at: June 9, 2011, 8:05 p.m. CST by Nordling

Nordling here.

Tonight at the Alamo Drafthouse Shepard Fairey hosted, along with Mondo Tees, one of the films that influenced him as an artist, John Carpenter's THEY LIVE.  In celebration of the event, Fairey designed a poster for it.  It will be available for purchase tomorrow at Mondo Tees, but amount is limited and since this will be an original work by Shepard Fairey it will probably go about as fast as it takes for you to read this article.  Follow @MondoNews on Twitter for more details, as they will announce on their Twitter feed when the posters will go on sale.  In the meantime, here's Shepard Fairey's THEY LIVE poster:

 Very nice.  Nordling, out.

it's more about him and less about the movie

    by zom-bot.com

is he taking ideas from grunge artists at deviant art now? surprised he'd do something so played out that has nothing to do with the movie. rotty old wallpaper patterns? hm. this makes me want to watch Exit through the Giftshop again.

and yeah i'm a bitter artist

    by zom-bot.com

bitter at people who make empires off of a few borrowed ideas and images. Fairey didn't invent the andre the giant has a posse stickers, btw. unless he was like 7 when he started selling them through skate mags like Thrasher.

if Carpenter made as much cash from the OBEY concept

    by zom-bot.com

as Fairey has, the world would be a fair and just place....and carpenter could maybe finance some decent movies now too.

  • June 9, 2011, 8:42 p.m. CST

    Fuck this is lame.

    by THE_CHOPPAH

Lame, lame, lame. As a THEY LIVE fanatic, I'm gravely disappointed. He took the movie's hamfisted charm and degraded it to hamfisted smarm. CHOPPED.

    by SpencerBarnes

Doesn't anyone remember the Piper's Pit episode that kicked off the great Hogan-Giant feud that culminated in Wrestlemania III at the Pontiac Silverdome? Am I right folks, hello? Here it is! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekhFIliHyqE&feature=related

  • June 9, 2011, 9:02 p.m. CST

interesting link about all the images he has stolen.

    by Smegmasaurus_Rex

This is why Shepard Fairey has very little respect in the art world. http://www.art-for-a-change.com/Obey/index.htm

  • June 9, 2011, 9:25 p.m. CST

Well that's certainly a Shepard Fairey poster.

    by ROBRAM89

Although calling out a street artist for repeating himself is kind of like saying Monet's paintings were too blurry.

  • June 9, 2011, 9:46 p.m. CST

Using reference pics is one thing, appropriation…

    by time2323

is another. Check out this link for some examples Fairey's more blatant examples of appropriation: http://www.art-for-a-change.com/Obey/index.htm Don't get me wrong, I think the guy is really talented. But some of this stuff is inexcusable.

  • June 9, 2011, 9:52 p.m. CST

    kk, I know right?

    by soma_with_the_paintbox

Some jackass got me this morning; I thought Lily Tomlin had croaked--just too rad for this world, I guess. I go to her official website (which looks like it last saw a webmaster's hand in 1997, btw) and she's still alive and kicking, tg. Oh well. Trolls gonna troll. What can you do?

  • If you look, you see just one image, the easily found image of the alien. Also, the background with all the newspapers. What is that? This looks like it took all of an hour to put together. Sorry, I find many recent Mondo posters to be poor efforts.

has the Obama re-election campaign started already?

    by Kirby and Ditko

  • Imagine the commercial. Obama is speaking at a podium, the crowd is being whipped into a hysterical frenzy. O-BA-MA! O-BA-MA! Then, moving amid the crowd, one man, Rick Santorum, dons a pair of dark sunglasses. And Obama is revealed as a creepy Alien-Skeleton from They Live. Santorum draws forth a squirt gun and fires in slow motion, smothering Obama in a frothy mix of lube and fecal matter, revealing Obama's true identity to the crowd. The Secret Security descends on Obama. The crowd now turns in favour of Santorum, lifts him up the crowd surfs him across the room. Camera moves in to Close-Up of Santorum: 'I'm Rick Santorum, and I approve this message." God, that would be fucking brilliant.

That Andre the Giant image is played out

    by Bobo_Vision

The artist is using this poster to promote himself and the hype around him.

  • June 10, 2011, 9:50 a.m. CST

Shepard Fairey is a plagiarist, a hypocrite and an overall douchebag!

    by Huey_Freemans_afro

He copies other people's work while trying to screw them out of credit. Then he turns around and sues another artist for copying his work.

  • June 10, 2011, 9:52 a.m. CST

    Fairey is so over

    by JamesWest

He rips people off then tries to claim he's an "artist"? Pshaw.

Terrible name. Terrible human being. I blame his parents.

    by Huey_Freemans_afro

  • FUCKING MEGA-WIN idea.

That is not Obama, It's Ronald Reagan Fool!

    by TJ

The film was made in 1988, and Fairey is prone to using Ronald Reagan in his American anti-political posters. That is 100% no-doubt definitely Ronald Reagan.

    by artdude102

Are the only references to the film. The rest is allllll about Shepard Fairey. Did they tell him this was supposed to be a promo for the movie and not himself? Wow.

  • June 10, 2011, 1:29 p.m. CST

    knuckleface ... Santorum

    by artdude102

Such an ad would require brains and creativity. 2 things Santorum is sorely lacking. I see him in more of a creepy "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" political ad...one where he screams like a girl and points hysterically every time he sees a gay guy walk by.

  • June 10, 2011, 2:11 p.m. CST

Fairey is a kick to the balls of hard working artists

    by alienindisguise

Dude's a hack just like Warhol was and all other pop artists who fuck up existing images and calls them art. Pathetic.

  • June 10, 2011, 3:43 p.m. CST

    ZOMBOT IS RIGHT

    by ZOMBRE

He is right. Sheppurd steals other artists work on a massive scale. He also uses Illustrator but thats a different story. On the other hand, how many artists can say they've had the impact he's had. I have zero respect for his stealing of art and his work. Plus, it's supposed to be a They Live poster. He just copied the orignal poster. Surprise. Its an OBey poster.
