Don Cheadle deals with a racist Brendan Gleeson in THE GUARD! Looks all kinds of awesome!
Hey folks, Harry here... Looks like Sony Classics has a winner with THE GUARD - a buddy comedy about an Irish cop that has a mountain of colorful misconceptions about the Blackness of his new unwanted FBI agent partner - who is there to help in a slight case of murder that, of course, is the mere tip of the iceberg. The Irish one is Brendan Gleeson and the FBI one is Don Cheadle... and I think the bad guy is Mark Strong - which is another feather for the project. Apple posted the trailer today, so go check it out! Looks all kinds of good.

The BBFC will probably ban it. Wankers. And the dipshits on here who struggle to differentiate reality (the actual tangible stuff going on outside your window) from art (the pretend stuff on you tv) will praise them for it. Wankers.

I thought it said Brendan Frasier. Dodged that bullet....

Everyone's scared of real racial humor. Fuck that, let's bring it all out. This country is too PC, so it's doesn't surprise me that it had to take place in Ireland. That has to be the perfect setting for some real non-pc humor. Never heard of this film until now but it's now on my list of movies to see.
-
...I'm really looking forward to this film, and I'm happy because I think that Irish or not, I'd still be looking forward to it. Irish films with an international appeal are too few and far between, especially considering what great people we have in the industry here. clockwork taxi - the line is "a racist dwarf and two MANKY hookers". See the below link for clarification of this particular word. It's a useful site, even for me sometimes. http://www.slang.ie/index.php?county=all&entry=manky%21&letter=M

And poor, discriminated-against black guy is SUCH A BORING and overused character.
by SierraTangoFoxtrotUniform
God, you would think that racism is so one-sided just based off these types of movies. Blacks are just as racist as whites so let's see some of that. How about a movie about white African farmers being brutally murdered by drug-addicted blacks? Black on white crime is actually much higher than the inverse, so there's plenty of material to work with besides the ones with stereotypical old, racist white men.

The Guard looks pretty damn funny! Seriously, what kind of IDIOT would start complaining reverse-racism in reference to this movie?
-
In the last three years..yeah I didn't think so. This reverse racism concept is such vacuous bullshit. Hollywood is still racist against blacks. Go to any black actor and ask him/her how many positive roles they're been offered. Go ahead. I dare ya.

Does that count?

The Boo-Hoo Platoon is back! (Huey and Nerd Rage)
by SierraTangoFoxtrotUniform
Nerd rage - Blacks are about 15% of the population, thus there are going to be fewer of them represented in Hollywood. Take into account the generally poor upbringing of a lot of blacks (illegitimacy, youth crime, high school dropout rates, etc.) you're going to lower that percentage even more. Only a fucking whinetard would say Hollywood is racist against blacks. There are PLENTY of black actors getting good roles. But then again, crybabies like you need tissue fodder like racism. Huey, you're just a dipshit of the highest order. "When other white ppl call a white person racist, it's probably pretty damn racist." No, they're mostly kowtowing, mindless liberals who look to kiss ass and spread some false delusion that they care about other people so they can feel better about themselves. It's funny because you two shitwits are replying to me because you know my s/n, not because of what I said, which was not even in the least racist. I always find it interesting when reactionaries like yourselves comment on the commenter instead of the comment itself. "Who cares if nearly 4000 whites were killed in Africa since '94, you're a racist for bringing it up." It's your mentality (what little there is) that keeps society's problems from being explored and resolved. So good job, knuckledraggers. Keep Kleenex in business!
-
You're clearly a racist. No need to hide anymore, be honest. Be who you are. A racist.
-
Brendan Gleeson is hilarious and Don cheadle provides a perfect straight man to this movie :)

LOL not the first time that Gleeson was cast as a racist. (Dark Blue ring a bell?)
by Stalkeye
One scene (during a ride in the elevator) comes to mind wheras Ving Rhames as Chief Arthur Holland makes a threat to Brendan: "we are gonna get into some N*gger shit". Gleeson's character Jack Van Meter : "OK, N*gger". Very underatted movie with a strong performance courtesy of Gleeson, Michelle Michael and especially Kurt Russell. Gleeson was also featured in 28 Days later as a father dealing with the Apocalyptic Zombie outbreak, while protecting his daughter. He's one of those overlooked character actors that one would recall; "oh, now I remember him from that movie.." Here's hoping for a major breakthrough performance.
-
Quote: "No, they're mostly kowtowing, mindless liberals who look to kiss ass and spread some false delusion that they care about other people so they can feel better about themselves." So basically (judging from what you have posted) you're saying that White People who take a stand against racism, xenophobia, homophobia, etc for the most part, have some sort of ulterior motive wether it's to build self esteem or what have ye. Congrats, Sierra you have called Caucasians out for being phoney and opportunistic and that's not cool. As a white man, (Well, actually I'm Olive skinned. (0:' ) I am offended by that baseless statement. It's called compassion and doing the right thing. Something you obviously know shit about. And you using a racial slur like Knuckledraggers does very little to validate your arguement. Now WHO'S reactionary?

This looks like a lot of fun and most Irish consider him to be one of our leading actors, best thing in Lake Placid, simply outstanding in The General, brilliant turns in the Harry Potter movies, AI, I Went Down kicked ass as did In Bruges, I saw him in Juno And The Paycock a long time ago in Dublin and he was fantastic. The racism in the movie seems mostly as a result of fear of the other, and also that we have an isolated people, living in the west of Ireland, who get all their experience of black people, not to mention every race/culture other than their own, from TV and Movies, so they do think that the stereotypes are real, seeing as that's how Hollywood chooses to portray them. So really, the jokes on the media system rather than the people who have adopted the same views, not through hatred but through pure and simple ignorance. We don't need to have other races here to be a bunch of bigots, just ask someone who was Jewish in the early days of the state, 1920's on, as someone who happened to be protestant after partition, or better still someone who had the bad luck to be a woman up until the 80's.

Was Terrence Howard surprised few noticed or cared that he had been replaced by Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2?
by Arafel
Was Terrence Howard surprised that no one tuned in to watch him on Law & Order: LA? He wanted more money for Iron Man 2, and the studio had to remind him how easily replaceable he was.
-
His acting always bugs me. He's always the guy who feels off to me in every movie I've seen him in. I thought his only okay performance was in KICKASS, which was a mediocre movie anyway.
-
he's the guy in the clip where the words MARK STRONG appear on screen in large bold red letters.
-
don't let these blind zombies get to you. you speak the truth and there are millions of good, strong, non-racist people that agree with you 100%. we just call it like it is without any "hate" or "agenda". also, it's good to see an intelligent presentation of the arguments you make. well done. veritas

And I live in Clare, West of Ireland, and there is quite a bit of this type of racism in the older generation...
by FreeBeer
...But it is quite hard to call it racism (although I don't know what else you would call it), there is no hate in it, it's more of a childish naivety. I work in a bar, and I've seen these auld fellas chatting away quite happily with black people, having a joke and a laugh, buying them pints, then when they've gone the auld fellas would turn around and say things like "Jesus, those darky's were sound out weren't they.", completely innocently, seeing nothing wrong at all in referring to a black man as a "darky". Sure, it's a very wrong and naive thing to say, but it's hard to call it racism when their is no hate there. Course it is racism, but I wouldn't lump them in there with the hard core, mad as a box of frogs evil fuckers that shave there heads and call for a Pure White Race, those sonsofbitchs should be lined up and shot

Stalkeye, thanks for recognizing the improper use of the word knuckledragger. I think he saw me use it once and thought he's throw it back at me. So when have I EVER called anyone a racial slur?
by SierraTangoFoxtrotUniform
That would be never. Go ahead and point out an example. And knuckledraggers is not a racial slur, lol. It's a term for any kind of moron (e.g. Huey or Nerd Rage) that doesn't think. It's catchier than moron so I like to use it. If it offends you, it's because you are one. This whole brouhaha is a wonderful example of many of my points. It's a nice microcosmic representation of how certain things are viewed and how certain things are not viewed (i.e. ignored) because people, like a few of you, are AFRAID to.
-
June 7, 2011, 1:18 p.m. CST
sierratangofoxtrotuniform or as I call you, STFU which you need to.
by Stalkeye
Hey asshole, Knuckledragger is a racial slur especially when blacks have been refered to as Monkeys or better yet, I witnessed a Caucasian Man called a Black Woman "Knuckledragging N***er" during a minor traffic incident. And this was in the "Melting Pot" that is NYC.not down South or within a suburban setting. So your counter argument is moot not to mention how defensive you are. but then again, you realize how much of a fucking hypocrite you are thanks to your hate spewed retoric rants and tirades against Blacks. (And I can easily pull out a few examples of your "Handiwork".) Just admit that you are a Racist...then again you dont have to, since your posts more than embellish the sentiment. No race is perfect and within every race, creed, etc. there are the shining examples good people and then you have your garden variety assholes who should not breathe the same air as I do. (Be it Bloods,Crips,Wall Street Bankers, KKK and You.) You, obviously are in no position to judge or really condemn since you are not the patron saint of White People. Pathetic.
-
This Sierra douchebag rants just like Ruckus, (Anyone who watches Boondocks, knows what I'm refering to.) with the exception that he's not Black. But probably just as fugly nonetheless.
-
I saw a bit of to-and-froing from industry types but only really heard about it once it was done filming. Shitehawks! Anyway, this looks great and the reviews have been pretty fawning so i'm really looking forward to this. Gleeson and Cheadle are usually fantastic in everything. I'd agree with the fella above who says racism is never mean-spirited around here. I normally go watch the football with the local Nigerian Arsenal supporters and we slag the shite out of each other all day (stereotypes abound) for the craic and enjoy each other's company immensely. Getting hammered with people from other cultures is too much fun. Israelis i've met are mad bastards though, sound out til they're reminded of the shitstorm in their country and suddenly you've got social surgery to perform. I need to learn how to shut my gob when drinking.

Excuse this ignorant Irish-American...but I could have sworn County Clare was part of the Republic of Ireland. Saying that "Clare is West of Ireland" is like saying "California is West of the United States". Or did you mean to say that "County Clare is IN the western part Ireland". Your setence is confusing. I presume you meant the latter.
