The Trailer for Wim Wenders' Mel Gibson flick, THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL...
It's been a long time in coming, but finally here's a look at Wim Wenders' new film, MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL. The trailer is dubbed in German... so you'll most likely just have to... figure it out for yourself. There isn't an American Trailer...as of yet that I've seen... so enjoy...
Lazarus Long here, Harry. Being a big U2 fan, I stumbled upon this while
visiting a band forum. It's the trailer for the long-awaited "Million Dollar
Hotel", scripted by Nicholas Klein and Wim Wenders, from an idea by Bono.
Ol' Wim is directing, Mel Gibson, Milla Jovovich, Jeremy Davies & Jimmy
Smits starring. I'm sure you've heard of it. Well the film is premiering at
the Berlin Film Festival this spring(?) and there's a German website up for
the film. I'm giving you a direct link for the trailer, which unfortunately
is dubbed in German. But seeing Mel Gibson sprekening ze Deutsch is quite
amusing, and the visuals are awesome. This movie looks like it is going to
be tres cool when it hits American shores.

if you don't think most of the AICNers would care about this, maybe I'll just
post it on an appropriate talk back. I'll give it a day. take care.

Why does some countries dub movies. There is nothing as funny as watching Stallone speak Italian or German. Is there any particular reason, or is it just because the moviegoers can't read ?. You do the same in the States - right ?. By the Way- im Danis and we Subtitel movies.
-
This film looks like a waste of time to me! Lets have a Red Dwarf film that would be interesting. Also does anyone else think that Depp was just a little close to Sherlock Holmes in Sleepy Hollow? He looked way too old for Ricci and why did he keep fainting every 10 mins or so. Cool film though Burton must be one of the last true visionary's left now that Kubrick has passed only Tim and Lynch carry on the torch.
-
I gotta admit the flick looks cool--and you know I rarely have anything nice to say about ANYTHING. However, and maybe this is just the fact that I've been up for three days, hearing the German dubbing was just a little too surreal for me. Thank you. Sleep.
-
Well done Mr Hewson, looks good...
-
Now this sounds like a place that a true star should stay at. A Million Dollar Hotel worthy of THE IRON GIANT himself. If this movie has cool visuals, why is THE IRON GIANT not in it? I mean, if there is one country with the industrial skills to build a physical IRON GIANT, it would be Germany. I must admit some disappointment.
-
I should have included some plot stuff in my note to Harry, but here's what I've gathered so far: The film takes place in this run-down fleabag hotel that is home to a bunch of weirdos, drug addicts, etc. There is a death of a wealthy man's son (I think) at the hotel, under mysterious circumstances. Mel Gibson is an F.B.I. agent sent in to investigate (was originally supposed to have his head shaved, but it doesn't look like it). I think Bono originally meant for it to be more futuristic; it's hard to tell from the trailer if it's just post-modern or set at a later time. Jimmy Smits apparently plays some freakazoid totally against type, and I think Jeremy Davies is one of the major characters. The website www.million-dollar-hotel.com is in German, but if you can successfully navigate the very confusing page, there are little human figures to click on that will give you character photos and descriptions (in german). Apparently at www.babelfish.altavista.digital.com there is a page that translates foreign languages. You're on your own. I think it's cool that Mel did this "indie" film; most of Wim's projects have had trouble reaching a wide audience. I thought Until the End of the World was a little slow, but very interesting and visionary. Or this could be Mel's first big bomb. Who knows?

nice to see a fellow Dane ! And yes dubbing sucks big time. Living in a country where you get a lot of German channels, just try to imagine the nightmares I had as a kid when I by a mistake heard John Wayne or Steve McQueen speak german. I think I need a shrink.

This film is dubbed in German, with an all German website, and it stars Mel Gibson, Mila Jovavich (sp?), and Jimmy Smits? Um...I...maybe I should go to bed. Yeah, um. May The Force Be...*yawn*...shit..............

Dubbing isn't all bad, and in my opinion the dubbed version of Akira was better than the subtitled one: you are distracted from the action whilst reading subtitles.
At least with DVD we can (potentially) have a choice. -
If you like Wenders, or you like the idea of this movie, there are three important movies you must see: WINGS OF DESIRE, a very moving German film about an angel trying to be human (do not judge this film by the poor remake CITY OF ANGELS); PARIS, TEXAS, about a drifter (Harry Dean Stanton) trying to return to his family; and THE AMERICAN FRIEND, which is based on Patrica Highsmith's novel "Ripley's Game," a sequel to "The Talented Mr. Ripley." It has Dennis Hopper in the title role. A German-born director, Wenders has had on/off success here in the U.S. (Has anyone seen THE END OF VIOLENCE? Anyone? Didn't think so.) His movies always have a strong emotional feeling to them.

simply becasue people will not see a movie with subtitles in it, at least here in the states, unless they are a true movie addict. In my hometown of 6000 people we had LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL playing for a week, the subtitled version. The night I went there were 2 other people in the theatre. The night a college professor of mine went she said tere were maybe 6 people, including her and her mother in the theatre. I asked the manager about this and he said that that was probably their biggest night. And this was right after the Academay Awards when everyone knew about LIB. When I tried to get people to go see it they said they wouldn't becasue of the subtitles. Hell I know peopole that get pissed at War movies that have the nazis subtitled yet the rest of the movie is in English because they have to read. It's laziness that causes this to happen.
-
Really! DUBBING SUUUUCKS!!!!!!
You're all absolutely right! But you know what? NOBODY over here would actually go to the theatre here if it was with subtitles... The Art cinema would be chained to the doomed life of being sub-culture! Playing just in the artsy little theatres I go to, to eventually catch some subtiteled movies :-}.
Almost 90% of all movies in our theatres ARE AMERICAN!!! Not French nor British or at least GERMAN! The argument of "too stupid to read" just doesen't work- although I wish it would. The ignorant mass want's to watch movies they understand in an instant and not have to read the whole during the whole time in EVERY MOVIE THEY'RE INTERESTED IN! As I said: 90% of the whole movies are US-made. Just imagine for a sec that there never emerged anything from that place called Hollywood, and now 90% of the movies showed in the US were FRENCH... imagine your pleasure of goin' to the watch the silverscreen and drag your children and parents (who just don't remember anything from their french classes)would be something called like: "1001 pattes! - A Bug's Life." starring: Jean-Hugues Anglaude and Anne Parillaud! Actually that would be somewhat cool... mmmmh...
But as I said: Dubbing really sucks! It ruined countless cool rolls of film for me! It's just that without it every Star Wars could have never been the Hit it was here, and there would be actually no movie-going culture AT ALL over here.
No for the TRAILER: I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS ABOUT! Even if I'd translate it, it wouldn't help anybody. Mels role is "FBI special agent detective J. D. Skinner," that's for sure. The rest... I don't know. Must be the dubbing. Just enjoy the fine looking pictures and wait for the american trailer...
Guten Tag and Auf Wiedersehen, everyone. -

Still Waiting For That Brilliant Follow-Up To WINGS OF DESIRE
by mrbeaks
Wenders made two of my favorite films from the 80's (PARIS, TEXAS and WOD,) but, since then, he's done flicks have done nothing but thoroughly frustrate. UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD was probably the best of his 90's efforts, but it was hardly up to his previous triumphs. As for the rest..... I've done my best to purge them from my memory, but the painful two hours I spent with THE END OF VIOLENCE still resonates. That being said, I'll never completely dismiss a filmmaker of Wender's enormous talent. I'd love to see him make a return to form.
-
Are you perchance on the WIRE? *waves to fellow U2 fan* Do hope this turns out better than that Entropy did. It certainly looks interesting, and Wim Wenders has tremendous talent. Mel Gibson is not an actor that I'm terribly fond of but I'll give him a chance. Milla is cool. Should have a killer soundtrack at least.

It would seem a well know fact that 90% of what is said in the Talk Backs is forgetful and pointless. Atleast I am not forgetful. As far as being pointless, i do try and relate to the topic matter the best i can. Furthermore, I have noticed that most of the things said in the Talk Back are usally related to personal experiences of the individual and it is through this exchange of ideas that we can learn about things that otherwise would have been out of our own realm. It is a wonderful thing. And for those who are open, rather then Closed like Mr Bond would seem to be, THE IRON GIANT has within it a form which can bring about creative aims in a rich and vital way when reflected upon. The only thing besides THE IRON GIANT that i have noticed can do this is this hot blond cheerleader that i watch undress from my van.

This preview kicks ass mostly for the fact that it is dubbed in German. Everyone here is bitching about it being dubbed or why dubbed movies suck. They have there place in film just like subtitles. Anyway, the trailer to this film kicks ass to us Americans because we don't have a clue what is going on (except those few German speaking Americans). Therefore, we haven't made up our minds whether or not the story or dialogue sucks. Keep the expectations low for a good movie, and it will be great. Wim Wenders is due for another hit. And Jeremy Davies is a badass. Bout time his talent is unfolding in more movies.
-
Sorry, but they are my fucking favorite band on earth, this idea has been going on in Bono's mind sincce the late 80's early 90's, i could be wrong (any wirelings willing to help, you know who you are ;-)) anyway, the song sounds awesome, its gonna be off there new album, its called ground beneath her feet, based on lyrics from bono's good friend salman rushdie's novel, i hope this is wide realease, cuz living in wichita, ks, we neveer get SHIT, anyway, the trailer looks awesome, and i really really cant wait

Yes, it does indeed suck, although Germany has the best dubbing factilities anywhere and the synchronity (is that a word?) works perfectly. Too bad it has been done over here ever since movies were around, so people are used to it. Other countries like Sweden or Denmark don't dub...and people still go to the movies. And learn foreign languages while sitting there watching. There are thousands of film lovers in Germany who would prefer the original version, but then there are millions of ignorant ones who don't. Anyway, we have many theatres showing undubbed versions, and with the DVD format we can at least enjoy the original at home.
-
The sequel (of sorts) to WINGS OF DESIRE was FAR AWAY, SO CLOSE! A curious thing to note is that at the end of WOD, there is the phrase "To Be Continued..." on the screen.
-
I can't download the trailer for technical reasons, so why don't you give us more information?
-
It even pisses me off when Hong Kong movies are dubbed into Mandarin when the original language is Cantonese. ... Doesn't Billy Bob Thornton sound just like a wizened old Japanese monk, by the way?
-
Yeah, FAR AWAY SO CLOSE was the sequel to WOD, and it was fucking ludicrous. Something to do with Natassja Kinski, Lou Reed, and acrobats battling gun runners. Utter nonsense. THE END OF VIOLENCE was also a total mess. Lovingly arranged shots of Andie MacDowell were its only redeeming quality. I'm still pissed at Wim for presuming he could pass it off as an actual movie. I'll go to the mat for UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD, though, so I'm still sort of curious about this new one.
-
My dad will not see foreign films because of the subtitles. Ask him why, and he says, "I'm trying to concentrate on the movie." The real reason: He is too lazy to read. And even worse than having a movie dubbed is when people think there is no difference. I recently rented RASHOMON and RUN LOLA RUN from the local Cocksucker Video. I made sure that RASHOMON was subtitled. I was not going to miss the inflection and actual way the words were said with this baby. It said on the box "Japanese with English subtitles." I get home, and it is horribly dubbed. The box of the GERMAN film RUN LOLA RUN said in French with English subtitles. That doesn't really matter in the end, but it shows how much attention is paid to it. And the reccomendation for other movies was SHALL WE DANCE, which has absolutely nothing to do with Lola. "Oh, who cares. They're all foreign countries."
And has anyone else realized how disgustingly inaccurate the subtitles are? I speak French (Yes, fluently. Pucker up, Buttercup.) and have seen many movies where entire lines of dialogue have had their meaning changed. Something's gotta give. -
Dear Mr. Knowles,
I couldn't help but notice that you deleted my recent post that we should, instead of saying "first", say "pubes". My question is, why? Why is that so bad. Have I offended anyone. No more than you have potentially offended other by saying "fuck" or talking about how you'd like to reach in the movie screens and slap the girl's asses (of course I'm making a generalization). I know that this is your website, and I know that you can do whatever it is, you want to do. But I must ask, what did I do that was so wrong? "Pubes." It's simple. It's true. So what? Duh, it's a complete rip off of the Conan O'Brian Show (TV-14, while your site would of course be TV-MA). Why is "pubes." so different than what you say Mr. Knowles?
Thanks,

I think it's a little unfair to attack Wenders so harshly. His films may be a bit messy, but it's not for lack of trying. He definitely tries to cover a lot of issues, and loses control of the film in the process. It also has a lot to do with a German New Wave filmmaker working in english. I thought End of Violence was very European, and although it was far from a masterpiece, it was saying something interesting. Some good actors in there as well (and who thought Bill Pullman would go back to his Serpent in the Rainbow days?). I'd rather see someone try too hard than to not say anything at all. That's why I like Magnolia. We need more people going to far, for that is where flashes of beauty are usually found. Also, someone said that from the story it sounds like this film is a mess too. How can you judge that from a synopsis? Nicholas Klein actually wrote the screenplay alone, so blame him or Bono if the story is fucked up. Although I'm sure Wim is collaborating pretty closely with these guys, who are good friends of his. And Until the End of the World is one of the forgotten gems of the 90's. Great acting by William Hurt, Max Von Sydow, Jeanne Moreau, Solveig Dommartin, Sam Neill, etc.
-
Has anyone here heard of, or even better, seen, the 5 or so hour director's cut for UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD? I remember reading about it showing at a film festival a few years ago, probably Berlin. The reviewer didn't have much good to say about the version we've all seen, but they said this new cut made it a clearer and much more interesting film. I've been dying to check it out.
-
Hmmm...okay, he's the story on this movie. One of the reasons that The End Of Violence seems so thrown together is that it was. It was a project that Wim and Co. threw together to make while they raised money to make The BILLION Dollar Hotel. That is the original name of this movie because the plot of the finished product is bookended by futuristic Blade Runneresque scenes of two guests in a technologically advanced hotel. They watch The MILLION Dollar Hotel using a virtual reality function in thier rooms that portrays them as the main characters. THAT was the original intent of this movie. Once The End Of Violence disappointed us all it was clear that Wim was not going to get the $ he needed for the futuristic effects he wanted. Make that $$$$$ instead of $. So now he just made a movie of the movie within a movie. Now, I've already seen this flick and, while it is more interesting and better conceived than The End Of Violence, it still falls a little this side of mediocre. This is a director that has given us great, great films...but I'm worried he never will again.
-
to add fuel to that conspiracy theory, William S. Burroughs died shortly after appearing in U2's "Last Night on Earth" video, and Roy Lichtenstein died shortly after U2 started using his artwork on their videoscreen during the 1997 Popmart tour. Maybe Oliver Stone can make a film about this intriguing notion of the artistic cooties.
-
While I am always up for accusing people of being in bed with the devil...I think a counter-productive piece of evidence is the fact that people keep dying after they've met Bono...it is a well-known fact that when you dance with the devil you live for a long time..I could give some examples, but you can figure some out for yourself. Oh, and the real Beelzebub is that magician David Blane or something. He's spooky...
-
Along with Roy Lichtenstein and William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg also died shortly after being involved with U2.
