Two New Viral Videos For THE DARK KNIGHT RISES?

Nordling here.

Reader Chris Yost sent me a link to 411Mania, claiming that two new viral YouTubes of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES had come up.  The first looks to be in a prison - Arkham Asylum, perhaps? - and some strange chanting in the background, the words of which I couldn't  quite make out, and then a first-person view from a car driving very fast down a city street:

The next appears to be a garbled Gotham newscast where the headline reads Arkham Breakout and with what appears to be a building on fire.  In the video is a Facebook page link, which I typed out and it simply led me to The Fire Rises Facebook page.  I may have typed some of the numbers wrong. If any of you can catch it and figure it out, feel free to let us know:

I can't confirm or deny the authenticity of these clips, but they look interesting.  They could simply be fan postings, or something else.  You decide...

Nordling, out.

Are they anything to do with the fortcoming XBox and PS3 game

...Batman:Arkham City? That features an Arkham breakout apparently.

    by DannyOcean01

Seems an obvious connection with Bane in the movie. Not sure how they'll work the entire plot in considering how it impacts on Batman.

    Saying that

    by DannyOcean01

They already had a breakout in the first film. One of the disappointing things about Returns as I was hoping they'd end up doing Knightfall as a storyline.

  • June 2, 2011, 6:44 a.m. CST

    Fake as fuck.

    by FusionAddict

Videos lead to here: The page's photos lead to an incredibly shitty photoshop of Matthew Modine as "Nixon". FAKE, FAKE, FAKE.

  • June 2, 2011, 6:44 a.m. CST

    Mike Engel is not dead.

    by UltimaRex

Batman and S.W.A.T rescued him from the Joker. Someone will decode this in a couple of hours.

  • ...viral media campaign to slowly build momentum for TDKR. The prisoners with the black hoods on, it reminds me of the torture of Iraqi prisoners in Iraq. I am getting a Arabic vibe from the chanting, so Ras is coming back, and not just his daughter...

  • June 2, 2011, 6:46 a.m. CST

    Anthony Michael Hall

    by ChiTownsBest

This definitely confirms that this is advertising for the new movie. I'm loving the slow but steady viral campaign they're putting together.

Seems more like Knightfall with each passing day.

An Arkham breakout being a significant event early in that story.

    by MoffatBabies

well.. actually... I guess that is plausible.

this isn't as obviously retarded as the Catwoman debacle

    by IWasInJuniorHighDickhead

but come on guys, all this material is lifted from the first two films. We're just going to look stupid here, again. Harry still believes in the Catwoman photos, I take it?

  • June 2, 2011, 7:10 a.m. CST

@bigeyebrow The "Outbreak" video uses footage from Bronson...

by FusionAddict one of the page's photos is a beginner-level photoshop of Matthew Modine. The stuff 42 Entertainment does is, without fail, of significantly higher quality.

  • June 2, 2011, 7:15 a.m. CST

    Fake and i have proof

    by Pr3

Those that say the inclusion of Mike Engel from TDK is proof that it is real are wrong. How difficult would it be to edit the GCN videos in from the TDK dvd/blu-ray? The facebook link in the video leads to a group with an poorly photoshopped picture of Matthew Modine as Nixon. Obviously fake. I even found the real picture they used. Whatever they have planned for the REAL viral marketing of The Dark Knight Rises, won't be as simple as facebook links in video's!

  • June 2, 2011, 7:18 a.m. CST

Not reported on any other movie site..

It's sad that anytime AICN runs something they know will have mass appeal is never to be believed. If I don't see it on slashfilm or joblo than it's not true. Case in point: The "first catwoman photo" they ran the day after the official Bane photo was revealed.

  • June 2, 2011, 7:19 a.m. CST

    Third video.

by UltimaRex BTW, real or fake this is still better than even thinking about the Smurf movie.

I saw that thing on 46 seconds too, looked like a flash cut to a couple of frames of fire or maybe a figure. I understand they are doing some filming for it next week near where I office block in Croydon (South London) called Delta Point. Lots of signs on the area marked as "WB Base" and "WB Loc". Think its filming from Monday.

Real or fake that chanting is haunting

    by Andrew Coleman

That first video gave me chills for some reason. If it is real which many here are doubting starting with the Arkham breakout is a mistake. Simply because too many idiots will start asking if the Joker is going to be back. I really hope these are real mainly because that chanting just bugged me out for some reason.

  • That doesn't look like Arkham and if they're chanting in spanish, it makes sense that this could be the riot that he used to cover his escape.

Dammit, the HUSH arc would be PERFECT for this series. Though I guess we'd have to have films introducing all the villains in that we haven't met yet in this series...but still, it'd be a great story to see on the screen.

'X-Men: First Class' co-stars Michael Fassbender and Zoe Kravitz were seen getting cozy and reportedly could not keep their hands off each other during a romantic stroll in New York on Sunday. The rumored couple earlier had brunch with a few friends including actor Ben Foster, who happens to be Kravitz' ex. is reporting that Kravitz, 22, and Fassbender, 34, began dating during the filming of the new 'X-Men' movie in 2010 but the couple did not go public until recently. A source is quoted saying, "They're really low-key, but they have a great time together just talking music or movies. They really didn't want to be a topic of conversation during the press for X-Men." The source also says that it was Kravitz who captured Fassbender's heart right from the start and it is she who is taking control of their relationship, "For how good looking and smart he is, Michael's pretty shy. She is actually the one taking care of him most the time. She really respects his talent." And as for their 12-year age difference, the source says that Kravitz is very mature for her age, "In that she has very strong opinions and she is very confident in herself. Most people are shocked to learn she's so young; she doesn't really bring it up and age would never stop her from dating anybody." Kravitz is the daughter of singer Lenny Kravitz and 'The Cosby Show' actress Lisa Bonet. In the 'X-Men: First Class' movie, Kravitz plays Angel Salvadore while Fassbender plays Erik Lehnsherr who eventually becomes the mutant called 'Magneto.'

Get ready to watch Rocky take on Broadway!! Sylvester Stallone has teamed-up with Tony Award-winning songwriting team Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty and writer Thomas Meehan to create a stage musical adaptation of the 1976 film, Rocky. In a recent interview Thomas reveals, "The project began about eight years ago when Mr. Stallone called me about making a musical version of Rocky. There was some worry early on — could we really make a musical out of a boxing picture? Could you make Rocky sing and dance? But when we did the reading, people were very impressed, and we’re going forward.” If all goes to plan, you can listen to two hours of Eye of the Tiger on Broadway in 2013.

You sound like 12 yr olds off yer meds after watching the first Cloverfield viral video..... No matter what you say, you are all going to be wrong. Nolan doesn't leack plot points, he may leak character looks, or masks/suits... .etc but he isn't going to put any plot points out there.

  • June 2, 2011, 4:21 p.m. CST

come on guys- the news clip video shows and says nothing. snippets and incomplete words that could have easily been taken from the existing footage. though if you ask me, Engel's face even looks manipped onto another body. the prison footage, well, things like that exist out there and can be edited. the car racing down the streets is a joke. looks like same tunnels used in TDK but the production value is straight up amateur. NOT nolan OR his viral marketing team would make something so bad. you DO remember the awesome TDK campaign, right? the chanting WAS already available with the picture of Bane before- anyone could have just reused it. look i'm all for getting the first peek at TDKR stuff, we all are- which is exactly why some bored people keep making and posting fake shit. I guess AICN has the right to post questionable stuff on the off chance it's legit but their track record on this flick alone and posting today bogus material they excitedly get behind is pitiful.

  • Nolen grew up watching the movies I watched as a kid, so he understands how to ramp up the entertainment value of a movie. He knows that plot and acting, even in an action movie are crucial. He understands that acting chemistry is vital. He understands that you need a great villain. If only people like Michael Bay or Jar Jar Abrams understood that.

You may have typed the numbers wrong?

    by Crooooooow

You honestly think it's in the realm of possibility that you tried typing in a facebook address, got the numbers wrong, and somehow got them wrong in such a way that you wound up at the page for the new batman movie? Wow just wow

  • Look at all the extras/prisoners/guards/riot police who appear in the clips, and the footage of fires and explosions. These look to be too expensive to pull off to be a fanfilm production. (And if you freeze some frames, it looks like the riot police have GPD insignia.) If this various footage is cribbed from other sources, then I imagine internet investigators will fish it out, but so far there's nothing to *confirm* that these are fake. As for Christopher Nolan and his interest in using the internet to promote, he would just sign off on various stages of this viral campaign, I imagine, but he nor his associates directly involved with the production of TDKR directed, shot or otherwise created the footage. This would, logically, all be put together by a separate team that's been provided a budget from WB marketing.

  • The League has invaded, and Gotham is on the verge of Anarchy despite the efforts of the GPD to maintain order. The League may be trying to smoke out The Batman, who may not have been seen or heard from for a long while now, and nobody knows what happened to him. The haunting chanting heard in all the clips are by members of The League (which may now include new members consisting of prisoners freed by them). It's all very unsettling: the analogy today is that of a total breakdown in an urban environment by an outside terrorist organization. Very relevant.

They might be fake, or real, but fact is...

    by Sniki

... they're defo going viral, just seeing all the people here commenting about how it's fake, how it's real, how everyone's dumb for believing it's real, how everyone's dumb for not believing it's real... These videos are generating movement and speculation, which is buzz about the movie anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if they intended people to argue about it by reusing stuff from the previous films on purpose (am I feeding the fires with this?).

  • That was used in the viral campaign for TDK, or extras, behind the scenes footage from the various DVD, Blu-ray, etc. releases of the last film? Or from other sources? Otherwise, these clips do not look like they were cheap to produce. They look like they were staged and shot throughout Chicago. And by now it shouldn't be surprising that there may already be new newscast footage of Anthony Michael Hall shot to be used throughout TDKR.

  • At the end of the "Outbreak" clip, that's the dialogue said by a man who sounds like a "man on the street" being interviewed.

  • June 2, 2011, 6:32 p.m. CST

    i think sniki nailed it.

    by darth_ghidorah85

what he/she said makes perfectsense to me. and i caught that, too, prof. pop-cult. definitely an interviewee response to a question about batman i say. regardless of it's actual viral campaign (which the chanting is, which i believe to be a sneak-peak to hans zimmer's theme for bane), or fan-made, it is definitely creepy and induces fear and panic i'd say.

  • June 2, 2011, 6:34 p.m. CST

In the "419" clip, what is the tall structure (skyscraper?) on fire?

    by Prof. Pop-Cult

If you look at the clip, you'll see a sign on a building to the right of the structure/building on fire -- I cannot make out the lettering. (Freeze it at 0:25.) It looks like a green logo followed by 6 letters. (ARKHAM? GOTHAM?) But could this burning tower be Wayne Industries? According to Wikipedia, "419" is police code for "dead human body".

  • So I don't think the timing of the release of these clips is coincidental. All five clips (over at TheFireRises account on YouTube) are intriguing. They do not look like they were cheap to make, and all convey a theme that feels extremely well thought-out, not something "fanboy-ish" at all.

Okay, I'm officially cutting myself off here

    by Kammich

It can be very fun to speculate on all the viral stuff, and to rabidly track down every single tidbit of casting and plot news for highly anticipated movies like this... but I'm gonna try to draw a line here, and distance myself from 'TDKR' until it comes out. Or, at least until we actually get a theatrical trailer. I loved "The Dark Knight" but by the time I saw the film, I knew nearly every fucking beat of the movie due to 18 months of scouring the web for info. I kept asking myself, "how much would I have really loved this film if I didn't know about Two-Face, the Batpod, the opening bank heist, etc etc?" It didn't RUIN the movie for me, but it took some wind out of its sails. And now I've already let my curiosity get the best of me, seeing Hardy as Bane, finding out who JGL and Cotillard are playing, finding out about the young Ra's casting... I'm gonna try my damndest to be surprised from here on out. Its gonna be tough, though.

The "424" clip shows a Chicago ambulance and police cars...

    by Prof. Pop-Cult

TDK was shot in Chicago and used Chicago PD cars rebranded as Gotham PD. In the "424" clip, you cannot make out the city name on the ambulance or police cars. (I tried -- I downloaded the 720p clip and went frame-by-frame through it on a video editor; did the same to the "419" clip to try to read the letters on the building next to the towering inferno.) "424" is police code for "abuse/neglect".

  • They believe that Ra's al Ghul (their "father") has returned to them, in the body of Bane. This could explain why it's difficult to figure out which language they are chanting in -- it's a mix of several languages shouting the same word.

Jesuschrist I think prof pop-cult figured it all out

    by Jim Jam Bongs

Wasn't the release of the chant tied to the release of the Bane picture? The chanting sounds like there is at varying points of it a "d" or "th" or hard "t". (People think they hear "murder," which would fit with the "d" sound.) But prof may have figured it out with "father", "pater" and "padre", all of which mean the same thing (father). Mash hundreds chanting any one of these three words and it's probably this.

ANd is the burning tower Wayne HQ?

    by Jim Jam Bongs

Arrgh... big spoiler if it is!

  • That burning skyscraper is not an easy nor cheap effect (CG and or a model) to pull off. Otherwise, why go through the trouble to show something that turns out to be incidental and meaningless? So I think it is important, and the only other building it could logically be is Wayne Tower (it looks too tall to be Arkham Asylum). I think all the imagery, sound, and dialogue snippets across these four video clips are important, suffused with meaning and clues. I have no strong theory yet what the significance or connection of what appears to be a street-level explosion (from a car or house?) could be.

  • June 2, 2011, 11:22 p.m. CST

    What the crap?

    by macheesmo3

who said it had to be fan made with actual self done effects? There is nothing in there (aside from the heavily edited news room footage which could be taken from prior batman films) that didn't look cobbled together from regular newscast footage of a fire in any city apt building or block. The cars "racing" through the city are obviously jump cut to hell to give the appearance of speed, not to mention that there are people visible in the background of the "prison" footage just hanging out, standing there, not looking to freaked out, nor do those prisoners appear to be chanting....... I really wonder about some of you on here and your ability to problem solve.

  • June 3, 2011, 3:06 a.m. CST

Why this is legit (so far)

    by Jim Jam Bongs

For now, nobody has been able to prove that the footage in these clips is recycled from other sources. Where's the proof, beyond the speculation? And it stands to reason that newscast footage of Anthony Michael Hall may have already been shot to be used for TDKR (for example, in scenes where people are watching TVs with the actor in character reporting the news). Also, we know TDKR will also be shooting some exterior scenes in Chicago again. And I don't feel these clips "smell" like fanfilms. Most fan work directly addresses the imagery of the property in question. (That's why the Catwoman picture obviously was fake.) In these clips, except for the mention of GCN, things have been purposely obscured to create plausible deniability. Nothing is directly referred to (i.e. Batman, Wayne Tower on fire, Gotham PD, the chanting). Fanfilmmakers tend to be too tempted to directly refer to the property they are referring to. Finally the timing of the release of these clips fits -- they follow the release of Tom Hardy as Bane photo, and they were released toward Memorial Day weekend (the traditional start of summer and the summer movie season). All of this can be disproven, if someone can show us that certain footage (like the towering inferno) comes from some other source. So I want to see proof.

  • June 3, 2011, 3:24 a.m. CST

For now these clips are legit and comprise HUGE spoilers.

    by Jim Jam Bongs

    1. The League of Shadows has invaded Gotham and caused chaos by releasing Arkham Asylum prisoners. 2. They are regarding someone as their "father" in a joyous, victorious chant. 3. Gotham is descending into anarchy. 4. The League has struck Wayne Tower. 5. The Batman is missing. Overall, this feels like a cross between the Knightfall and The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel storylines. (Bane could be the stand-in for the mutant leader in The Dark Knight Returns.)

  • Good detective work, guys.

The street level explosion in the "419" clip...

    by Prof. Pop-Cult

Since "419" is police code for "dead human body", this could refer to the portion which appears to show a house or other street-level building blowing. At 0:35, we can see what appear to be two persons standing in front of a building, then the building explodes. Who are these people? Could it be Selena Kyle and her female friend (who dies in this explosion)?

    Bane seen in "Outbreak" clip?

@ Zombot: Though I'm not really who you are talking about, as I came way late to the party and haven't called anyone stupid, I will say that, yes, it would appear they are fake. Not to push the contrary argument, but I will say the link isn't a very solid debunk though. All it really says is, "I’ve been getting a lot of emails and tweets about the account, but it’s not coming from Warner Bros. and it’s certainly not coming from 42 Entertainment." It would be nice if they could quote someone saying it isn't WB, especially seeing as " is not affiliated with DC COMICS or WARNER BROS. PICTURES" according to the bottom corner of their site. Still. I expect it is fake, but a well done fake nonetheless. Really enjoyed poking around with it. Cheers.
