Which FIREFLY Actress Is Joining Howard Gordon's New Showtime Series??

Published at:  Jun 01, 2011 8:46:24 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Morena Baccarin, who played Inara on FIREFLY/SERENITY, Adria on STARGATE SG-1, and recently starred as Anna on ABC's dull and defunct revival of V, will soon appear in a forthcoming Showtime series from Howard Gordon (an Executive Producer on both THE X-FILES and 24).

Baccarin will play the role of Jessica Brody, Sgt. Nick Brody's (Damian Lewis) intrepid and complicated wife.  HOMELAND begins production this month and will be executive produced by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, who recently served as executive producers on the long-running series 24.

[EDIT]

HOMELAND, which was written by Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa and Gideon Raff, centers on an American soldier (Damian Lewis) taken prisoner during the Iraq invasion in 2003.  Left for dead, he miraculously returns to the U.S. after years in captivity.  Carrie Anderson (Claire Danes), a driven CIA officer battling her own psychological demons, becomes convinced that the intelligence that led to his rescue was a setup and that this national hero may be connected to an Al Qaeda plot to be carried out on American soil.   Mandy Patinkin plays Saul, a veteran CIA Division Chief who is Carrie’s boss and mentor.

...explains Showtime's press release on the matter.  Showtime has recently been running material from the series' pilot effort, which is viewable via the embed below.  HOMELAND, by the way, is adapted from an Israeli television series called PRISONERS OF WAR.

    Will she be nude?

  • After re-watching Firefly in the Science channel in HD these last few months, I can't believe she would ever cut her hair as short as its been the last few years.

Finally a Carrie I'd be interested in watching

    by frakthetoasters

Clare Danes looks really good in this role based on this short scene. I think this could be a good show.

Damian Lewis looks like an Amish ginger.

Is it too late to cast Morena in The L Word instead?!?

A long neck on a woman is fine...

    by dahveed1972

... but hers is freakishly long. Probably why she was cast as an alien queen. i guess long hair would make it less noticeable. Not a great actor tho, based on what ive seen. And i enjoyed firefly. Im a fan of Whedon's stuff, but he has this habit of casting cute but limited actresses for his shows. It worked on buffy (SMG, ED, AH, CC), but that was the exception.

    manchurian candidate the series

    by palewook

not crazy about the premise. little borrowed, little uninspired.

Yet, this is a great cast. could be a watchable series regardless of the weak concept.

Sounds Interesting to Me, I'm In For The Pilot At Least

    by crow3711

It is a bit Manchurian Candidate meets some other stuff, but overall, I think its a ballsy plot for a show and if executed correctly could be absolutely riveting. The only problem is that either she is right, which she pretty much has to be to make it a good show, and there isn't much mystery to it, or she's wrong, and its a good mystery, but then if it turns out he isn't a terrorist that really isn't very interesting at all.

She is a bad actress, and the kiss of death for a series.

    by v'shael

And if some stories I've heard (convention wise) are true, she's not a particularly nice person either.

The TWIST = She's the sleeper agent.

And her dormant persona is planting evidence for her active persona to find, and implicate the returned soldier.

    V was not dull.

    by hobocode

Weakly written in spots? Sure. Horrible effects? Absolutely. But dull? I'd say it was pretty entertaining. The finale in particular kicked all sorts of ass.

Seems like it would be tough to pad out to a series

    by domi'sinnerchild

I mean, the premise is they already suspect he's a Manchurian Candidate. What's season 2? "Hahahaha, you really had me going last year. I totally thought you were going to blow up the building." Turns away, hmmmm... maybe he just wanted me to think he was going to blow up the building and then didn't to throw me off his tracks. I'm so on to his terrorists tricks.

Morena is not the only female Firefly alum to be recently unemployed

    by jacksparasites

Summer Glau's dreadful show "The Cape" was recently canned and Jewel Straite has been off the air since 2009. And I'm not sure what Gina Torres was up to but I don't think she's on a series right now. The only female Firefly alum I know still has a TV show is Christina Hendricks, who's on Mad Men.

It's True, She Is Kind Of a Bad Actress

    by crow3711

I've never really sat and thought about it before, but I know I've always found her to be by far the least interesting part of everything she has been a part of. Very dull, always. But the fanboys always seemed to love her so much in everything, I never really questioned it. She's not even really all that beautiful, in my personal opinion. Certainly not hard to look at or anything, but just not stunning either. Now that I think on it though, yes, she most definitely is not a very good actress at all.

Baccarin is not a bad actress.

    by blackwood

I haven't seen her in anything beyond FIREFLY and V, and definitely in V she was the only interesting thing about the show. And she was great in FIREFLY. Great great great.

I do agree her neck is freakishly long, but I think it's cool.

People should say, "Jewel Staite" instead of "Damn straight."

    by behemoth

You know, like, you say, "Man, that mother effin' Oprah has an ass the size of a leper colony in ancient Judea," and your homosexual lover replies, "Jewel Staite."

    Make it happen, world.

Showtime Squandered It's Lead Over HBO

    by _maltheus_

Back when HBO canceled everything and Weeds and Dexter were new, it seemed like HBO was dead and Showtime would reign supreme. Then Weeds turned into garbage and Dexter has been like a skipping record for years now. This new show sounds awful at a time when HBO is putting out shows like Game of Thrones. The pendulum is hypnotizing.

Anyone else tired of American Terrorists?

    by cash907

Seriously? *Another* "we are the enemy" plotline? Hasn't NCIS just beat this dead horse straight into the ground? How about someone does a series with REAL terrorists for a change? Anyone remember that Hassan guy, who shot up Fort Hood? Remember all the warning signs he was throwing off for years that he wasn't stable, and didn't have the highest opinion of the US, it's military, or just Americans in general? Why don't you do this series, with that guy? Flip this cliche` formula on it's ear, and instead of doing the tired "he looks like you and me but he MIGHT be a terrorist" thing, go 180 and do a "he totally looks like the sort of guy who would blow you all up just because your wife went out of the house in a dress, but IS he a terrorist or are we all just racist pricks" plot.

And give Life a third season, because the crap they've been doing lately is way beneath Damien Lewis and Sara Shahi.

    Yeah, Showtime is hurting

    by domi'sinnerchild

I keep making the argument, "we can always download Dexter". My wife doesn't even like Weeds any more. With Stars free on Dish right now, HBO seems like the only thing worth paying for.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Not really, but good to see both of them getting work. They are both talented actors that should be interesting to watch in this series, which sounds kind of a bit much as a concept, but could be interesting.

I Agree the premise is sketchy but I'll watch it

    by smackfu

for Damian Lewis and Claire Danes. I am also getting tired of Hollywood pretending that Americans are more likely to be muslim terrorists than Arabs though. I mean I understand they don't want to seem like they're promoting a stereotype, but knee-jerking to the polar opposite of the spectrum is not the way to handle it, it's basically a more subtle way of re-enforcing the same stereotype.

It would be far more interesting and engaging for the audience if it was an arab-american soldier, as our own prejudices would be examined and confronted while watching it.

If he turned out to be a terrorist, many viewers would be questioning the fact that they let him slip under their guilt radar because of fear of being racist or prejudiced.

If he turned out not to be a terrorist, many viewers would be questioning their rush to judgment, etc.

It would just be far more emotionally complex if it was an arab soldier.

    makes me miss Rubicon

    by oisin5199

what I'm seeing here seems pretty cliche. Including the brash female lead whose superiors snarkily doubt her. Rubicon had way more subtlety and style. I'll check out what Morena's doing, though. She IS a good actress, but with V, she was given little more to do than chew scenery (with a few rare exceptions). I'm glad V's gone.
