Cool News
Folks say The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day is no good, ‘ceptin’ for fightin’ and hell-raisin’.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
I love this shot of the filming of Howard Hawks’ Sergeant York, starring Gary Cooper. It’s one of those shots that really encapsulate the epic nature of filmmaking.
I love the look of the studio, the set itself, the platform built for the camera to get this particular shot, the boom op perched above the serene looking Cooper and the shadow on the backdrop.
All that production to get a solitary shot of one man sitting by himself. That’s Hollywood, folks!
Hope you enjoy the pic! I’ve also included one that’s not really behind the scenes, but a production still that shows a little more what the camera is actually seeing. So you have one that shows the giant production surrounding a simple shot and then you see one that shows what it looks like all stripped away, focused to one view-point. Click to embiggen!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
Tomorrow’s behind the scenes pic will punch you in the boob!

Alvin York was a backwoods badass!
-
This is the moment where York is contemplating the word of man versus the word of God & where he as a mere farmer should weigh in. This is a man trying to seek meaning, which led to one of the most astonishing single man triumphs in the history of war... LOVE THIS MOVIE!

He should be Turd!

Truly.

This is but one of the many truly standout BTS pics shown. I mean, I love the column and look forward to and enjoy whatever surprise you might have for us, and watch and wait for it every day, but this is one of those ones that just stands out amongst all of them. For me it's a great movie, great director, great actor from a great period in movie history time. Keep up the awesome work.

Because that amazing first photo reminds me of portion of the game in which you're running around this really fantastic Hollywood set that, I think, is supposed to be of ancient Egypt. I can't more highly recommend "L.A. Noire" if you're into "golden" era Hollywood stuff like "L.A. Confidential" and behind-the-scenes photos like today's.

The Goonies, Tombstone, Dead Alive, and ET.
-
As Harry said, the scene where he contemplates his passive faith versus aggressive faith is as good as anything on film.
-
...Sergeant York...?!
-
and they still look better the cgi any day of the week.

Thanks for the pic. I've seen, but do not own Sergeant York. I need to remedy that.

the pairing of top + bottom pics makes this one of the best BTSPotDs yet.

like you said, Quint, "all that just for one shot"

Though the real set was torn down sometime in 1916-17 [iirc]. It was D.W. Griffith's follow up to Birth Of A Nation, to silence all critics who blasted BOAN for being racist.

Ever think of doing a weekly theme for the bts pic of a day? Like one week is all from Sam Peckinpah/The Wild Bunch movies, next is Disney, Next is James Cameron/Aliens,Paul Verhoeven/Robocop,etc. It actually might be more challenging just to see how much you can come up with for said idea/topic of choice. Oh, and if you're taking requests, I'd like to see alot more Sam Peckinpah bts stuff.Particularly Wild Bunch and Alfredo Garcia.

one of our greatest hero's and one of our greatest actors...story has it the real York said he only wanted Cooper to play him in the movie.

This is one of my top ten movies all time. Being from Tennessee this guy is a personal hero of mine and the movie is one of the best ever made. Great BTSPOD, probably my favorite so far.
-
Perfect combination of interesting aspects of film making - the boom guy, the camera platform, etc - and photographic excellence - the shadow on the backdrop is fantastic! Best BtSPotD ever!

Alvin York is a Tennessee and American hero.

Yeah, fantastic game, my methadone until Batman: Arkham City is released. T.'.

"Every gall-darned bit of it." If you see a movie, and it has Walter Brennan in it. It's good.
