The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day will see its lawyer about this as soon as he graduates from law school!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
Today’s pic was way too cute not to share. This appears to be a shot from the making of Duck Soup starring the Marx Bros, but not really ABOUT the making of Duck Soup. The guys got a visit from little Shirley Temple and this shot was taken of Harpo and Temple that is too adorable.
The legend goes that Harpo fell in love with Shirley when she and her family happened to pass by the set during the filming of Horse Feathers and offered $50,000 to adopt her right on the spot. Keep in mind this was before she was famous.
It kind of sounds creepy now that I read back over it, but screw it. I choose to believe Harpo was just smitten with the girl and wanted to be her dad.
Hope you enjoy the pic! Thanks to Bruce Hardt for passing it along!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.

Polanski would have felt more at ease in old Hollywood. FACT!

He would have bought prepubescent starlets by the dozen in those days. "Talent under contract."

I've been trying to be less cynical, but something about the overly cute girl really bothers me. I have to remind myself that I don't hate Shirley Temple, but rather the people who put her up on stage and the people who bought into it. She is certainly talented, but I always feel like that talent is exploited, much like those toddler pageants. It just really bothers me, and if that makes me a heartless jerk I guess I'll have to live with it.

It's a picture of a girl on an actor's lap, and they're both hamming it up for the camera. It isn't like someone took the picture without Harpo knowing and caught him touching something he shouldn't. Having said that, his costume does look like something you'd have found in the Prince of Pop's closet. Heh.

Nothing creepy about this. Adults and children can... you know... actually TALK to each other! And... interact! without everything having to have some sexual undertone. Jeez!
-
It was an interview from the '60s. And, unlike his brothers' tenor voices, his was a deep bass. Not at all what you would expect. And one other thing. For straight up comedy, Duck Soup is my all time favorite. I laugh my ass off every time. The most brilliant satire ever filmed, IMHO. (Although it's a tough pick between Duck Soup and Blazing Saddles.)
-
Charles Bronson and Jill Ireland adopted their daughter Katrina Holden Bronson when her mother Hilary Holden, a good friend of Ireland's, who worked in casting, died when Katrina was in her early teens.
-
I love the Marx Brothers! You'll get more laughs from a single MB film than you'll find in a year's worth of modern comedies. Sad but true.
-
"The rest of his face ain't so good, neither."
-
that Harpo and his wife adopted four children over his life, so it is no surprise that he would have wanted to adopt Temple. He seemed like a pretty decent fellow from what I've read.
-
If you read any of the Marx Brothers bios (and there are no shortage of them out there), the general consensus is that Harpo was a wonderful, giving soul who truly loved children - and not in a sordid, sleazy way. The only pervert in the room is Noidling. Fuck you and fuck your evil fucking mind, you fuck.
