Don't be afraid of the DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK trailer if you dare! Now it is back!
Hey folks, Harry here... DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK is a film that Guillermo Del Toro has been attempting to get made for years. How long? Oh gosh, he was talking about it when I first met Guillermo about 13-14 years ago. From what I hear, this is another spectacular film. The original had a low budget creepy feel, but this trailer nearly beats that all on its own for me. BTW - while I'm talking about Guillermo produced horror awesome - keep your eyes open for JULIA'S EYES - it is simply a magnificent variation on Eye Recovery Horror - and I dearly love the film. Some very creepy stuff in that flick, but I believe it's coming out in UK around now - and might be popping up in places. Here's the trailer:
The YouTube of this Trailer has suddenly been listed as private... I'll see if I can try and find it again! Damn this trailer is way cool! Looks like EMPIRE has an embed of it. Wish the YouTube worked still it was in gorgeous HD.

What? Am I not good enough to view your video?
by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
You want me to come over there and trash your fucking lights?

Was your witnessing of this private video kind of astonishing?

I muted Wheel of Fortune to watch this. Thanks for making me miss the last puzzle, Harry.

Harry and Guillermo's private video..
by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
I hear it involves a mutated woman from Mars with three breasts, a horse, a hamburger and Steve Guttenberg. I, for one, am glad we can't see it.
-
...FAIL!!!!
-
I didn't realize that had become a sub-genre, but I like the sound of it.

by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
"You remember that time when Harry put up the video none of us could watch?" "Yeah. Wasn't that around the same time he posted that fan poster of The Amazing-Spiderman?" "Yup. And not long after he also posted the obviously fake picture of Catwoman from TDKR." "Those were the days. Before AICN went all professional and shit."
-
If you could let me see it, I would be very grateful to you.
-
It certainly is
-
1. That girl looks like Suri, so well-cast indeed. 2. This movie could be fucking awesome; very psyched. 3. Del Toro's "Haunted Mansion" movie could be AWESOME! 4. Katie Holmes needs to leave that psycho immediately and hop onto my junk. 5. Guy Pearce is awesome and needs to work more.

by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
I didn't see the bit where the screen turns black and the writing "This video is private" appears. It's obviously a fan made trailer. I only trust AICN for my trailer needs.

If the lights dim and "This Film is Private" pops up...... I'll laugh and laugh...... And then I'll buy the Criterion when it becomes available.

by brocknroll
Orlando Bloom confirmed for "The Hobbit", Shannon Elizabeth for "American Reunion", and Jeff Conaway dead. I'm fucking done with AICN, you guys really did it this time.
-
it's got Katie Holmes, it looks cheap and generic. Sure, Guy Pearce and all, but c'mon. It looks like every other PG-13 early 2000s watered-down horror movie ever. Pass.
-
'Least that's what the trailer I watched on another site said.
-

@grasscutter. Yeah, the trailer may look like that, but...
by schizoschizo
...as kermit pointed out, it IS rated AAAAARRRRRRR, and I read somewhere that people who saw advance showings of this said it scared them shitless!!!
-
Shouldn't this retroactively ruin the original for you? Isn't that how it works? Oh, I get it. This is from Del Toro the fanboy favorite. Can someone say hypocrites...
-
One look in the mirror told me so.
-
Jesus, ain't a man's breakfast food private anymore?

Don't

Guillermo Del Toro is about as overrated as they come. I don't get all the hype around him.

Maybe my expectations were too high but that didn't really do much for me
by torontoxic
Family + moving into big old house = loose butthole. They need to tighten that butthole up. Horror isn't scary when its not all new and tight butthole.
-
Have you seen Pan's Labyrinth? Or Hellboy? Or Hellboy 2? Or any of his design work? Or seen any of his interviews? Cuz he's pretty amazing. So. I'm just wondering.
-

I don't know, nothing in that trailer convinced me.

Troll meets Gremlins meets Cat's Eye. Or is it the creatures from "9" after the Umbrella Corp. injected them with the T-Virus?
by Boober
-
Don't get me wrong, I'm seeing this. But were it not for Del Toro's involvement, everyone would be ripping the shit out of that trailer.....
-
sewer_mask told ya so!
-
Yes, I have seen those movies. Pan's Labyrinth is his best work. The Hellboy movies are AWFUL. The design work is good, but the movies are absolute shit. Special effects cannot save a movie that has a retarded story. Del Toro is not "amazing". He's an OK director with a very good eye for creature and set design, nothing more. Stop jerking off all over at the mention of his name.
-
all horror movie trailers have a jump scare at the end so that shouldn't be spoiling anything, but this one was a bit cheap. Looked like they just spliced in a different part of the film there.
-
May 27, 2011, 8:48 p.m. CST
Serious question: is this supposed to be a kids'/family movie?
by Prof. Pop-Cult
The horror seemed kind of mild in a family friendly sort of way.
-
Trailer proves it.
-
judging by the R rating....I'd say smart money is on "nope".
-
Sigh... this is more of the same that we've seen so many times. Destined for Lifetime -- eh Katie Holmes? Tired filmmaking and cheap scares. And enough whispering! If you want to get out... use a louder voice! Annnnd end shit... I mean end scene.
-
Seen it all a million times. This seems like a film that's been released many times, and this one is definitely 13/14 years too late. Boring boring boring. Mark my words: horror is going 70s. Don't watch crap like that anymore.
-
I own the original on vhs, and if nothing else, it improves on the original by NOT featuring twiki from Buck Rogers in a shitty halloween mask. It has the atmosphere right, and that is certainly a creepy-assed house. I always liked the concept of the story, When I was a little kid my dad let me watch it when it was originally on tv, 'cause he can be a dink at times, and it scared the crap out of me. Thing is, big monsters don't scare me as much as smaller ones, I'd rather face anything than that damn doll from trillogy of terror
-
Ive seen the original one and I almost shit on my pants, if this one is anything close to that one its a highly recommended scary movie, story wize is not far from what you have seen before, but a lot of jumpy moments. cya Gus
-
. . . and I guess shitting ON your pants is better than shitting IN the pants you're wearing.
-
…and it's even a remake. Boring boring boring +++. Why oh why? The 70s had better material to offer than this… the giallo, for instance.
-

Hate to be negative but this brings to mind MANY other horror movies
by BlackBauer0320
The fair warning from a random old man/woman (every haunted house movie ever), drawing pictures of the monsters (every horror movie involving a child, ever), parents becoming slow believers (every horror movie involving a child, ever). Hopefully this trailer sucks simply because it's attempting to capture the normal horror audience that goes out and makes shitty horror movies successful at the box office. It's true, if it didn't have Del Toro attached, this trailer would get destroyed.
-
...sounds a bit depressing. And the trailer is pretty much one horror cliche after another. Very Sixth Sense-y in a lot of places. But it looks very well made, the effects look nice (CG looks nicely subtle for the most part), and in some ways looks like a nice old-fashioned creepy film. Still has too much Hollywood gloss and big scale to really feel genuine, but it's trying. Always, always good to see Pearce in something, though. This guy is criminally underused. He should star in At the Mountains of Madness, IMMEDIATELY! Which is also when that film needs to be greenlit. Damned timid Hollywood money.
-

That girl has kinda irked me in some things I've seen her in
by TheMcflyFarm
But I always thought she'd be perfect casting as Katie Holmes' daughter. As it turns out she is Guy Pearce's daughter in this and Holmes is his girlfriend, which makes it the absolute WORST CASTING EVER! Why the hell would you cast a little girl that looks spot on for the offspring of your lead actress if the characters are not related????
-
This is going to get me some hate but I find Del Toro films to be VERY boring.. Tons of style, and terrible pacing.. Only Blade 2 felt like it moved forward.. Other than that, his films are slow, boring and predictable.. Great imagination, terrible delivery. All that aside, this film looks ok...
-
May 28, 2011, 12:15 a.m. CST
The reason why I asked if this was a family film is because this trailer looks so cliche almost bordering parody...
by Prof. Pop-Cult
God the only cliche left would be if in the movie itself it's revealed that the girl and her parents are dead (or her parents are dead, and she's alive and can see the dead).
-

Rich yuppies are terrozided by evil creatures in a huge mansion
by AsimovLives
When we will get an horror movie where poor people who live in a public (social) housing will get terrorized by evil creatures? Can't Holywood make movies about poor people? And i'm not talking about like Candyman, which was about a middle class woman who visited a social housing place. I'm talking about the protagonists being poor people themselves. It's fun to see yuppies being thorn apart by evil creatures in horror movies, for sure, but can we get alternatives, please?
-
I was thinking horror not SF, but thanks, i think it will do for now.
-
... was one of the refreshing things about Insidious. They quickly went from "oh it's just something we can easily explain" to "holy fuck, this house has ghosts/demons/spooks". Spending an hour trying to convince the other characters in the movie that the voices aren't from the wind and the huge scratches on the wall aren't rats will get _tedious_. Looks OK from the trailer, but I think has great potential. Like the production design and concept and I guess I'll go on record with being another GDT nutswinger :D
-
Now I know why Harry loves this trailer! He's the star of the film! Seriously, though, looks creepy enough for a matinee. I'll take a good monster movie over torture porn any day.
-
This just doesn't feel scary to me. The original was totally creepy with one of the best endings of any horror movie. But this one.........the child just doesn't work for me. The creatures just don't work for me. It's got that Hollywood feel to it. It's just not like the original. I love Guillermo. But this just doesn't feel like it was done right.
-

by Subtitles_Off

-
Yep.
-
soon as I saw gdl's name I knew the little girl was assed out. Looks good and I will be waiting patiently for people to tell me their opinion of it and make an informed decision whether it's worth my time this summer.
-
just googled this movie and that's what they said. it seems he's done work for hellboy's creator and I think the Matrix comics...hope he has a better career than first time director of Sky Captain and the World of tomorrow.
-
It's the same horror movie trailer ending that's been done hundreds of times in the last 10 years. I can't believe someone had the stomach to be so unoriginal there. Doesn't mean the movie is bad, but it just makes me sick.
-
But this movie's gonna rip through theatres & barely make bank the entire time...but it's still gonna be fantastic. Two words...Del & Toro...two more words...Guy FUCKING Pearce!!! Three words.
-
May 28, 2011, 8:49 p.m. CST
Agree with AsimovLives for once actually, more monsters on the streets please...
by FreeBeer
...One of the reasons I'm looking forward to Attack The Block, something different than the suburban invasions or mansions horror movies that are a dime a dozen. I've always thought a horror movie where the main characters are homeless would be fantastic. A monster preying on those that are most vulnerable, people that disappear and it goes unnoticed.

The Suri Cruise Story. LOL
-

Doesn't bode well for Tom Cruise when his wife is in a haunted house movie
by ragingfluff
Mimi Rogers, Hider in the House* (1989), divorces Cruise the next year Nicole Kidman, The Others (2001), separated from Cruise the same year * and yes, I know Hider in the House is not technically a "haunted house" movie but if Gary Busey was hiding in your house, you'd consider it haunted
-
That is EXACTLY what I loved about Insidious. Adults that act like real people, not horror movie cut-outs.
-
May 29, 2011, 8:15 p.m. CST
the set looks too artificial "faux old," like the Cristina Ricci "Casper"
by Demosthenes2
I liked that the cheap TV movie's set was so plain--it added to the creepiness. I'm still looking forward to this.
-
The person in the dark is Tom Cruise. Katie Holmes slowly begins to realize that she is married to a monster who believes in some bullshit religion made up by a bad pulp writer who just wanted to get rich and molest little boys.
-
This shouldn't have been made. The original still stands by itself today, which is quite a feet. It's creepy as shit, and I don't think that will be improved upon, especially considering the original did it with zero gore or profanity.
-
At least that trailer did, which is a little surprising. I thought considering the hype, it was supposed to be one of the best horror films ever made.
