Ain't It Cool News (

The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day is gonna need a bigger boat... Plus it wants to give away a great new making of book, JAWS: MEMORIES FROM MARTHA’S VINEYARD

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!

My obsession over Jaws had led me to believe that I knew every story and teeny tiny factoid about production. Then I received a proof copy of Matt Taylor’s JAWS: MEMORIES FROM MARTHA’S VINEYARD and was instantly shamed at my arrogance.

The majority of the book is told from the point of view of the islanders as Jaws took over their home in the summer of ’74 and is filled to the brim with never-before-seen photographs, insight and stories about the production. I’ve read Carl Gottlieb’s THE JAWS LOG (thrice) and Edith Blake’s Making of the Movie Jaws and there’s stuff in here that threw me for a loop.

I’ll have a full review closer to release, but the lovely folks behind the book have agreed to let me run a contest.

The contest is going to be similar to my last Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day contest I ran, giving away a copy of JW Rinzler’s Making of The Empire Strikes Back in that I want you to email me the best Behind the Scenes pic you can find (from any movie or TV show) to this address with the subject line Three Tons of BTS! and your mailing address in the body of the email. The contest, as far as I know, is open worldwide.

If you scan your image from a book or magazine please accredit the origin in the body of the email. I’ll be picking the most badass image, with an eye towards rarity and clarity of the image. You can send multiple images, but break ‘em up a bit so each email is under a few megs as to avoid bounce-backs.

I have two copies of the book to give away, but one is already spoken for. I’m giving it to reader Pat Barnett who has sent an incredible amount of fantastic BTS images that have been gracing this column for the last month. So, keep that in mind… those regular providers of pics are definitely appreciated and, from time to time, rewarded!

However the big winner of this contest will get the Limited Collector’s Edition book, which is hardcover instead of soft, limited to 1000 numbered copies and comes with a DVD of 8mm home video of the production shot by islander Carol Fligor and a piece of the Orca II (aka the sinking Orca) which was left on the island post production!

The limited edition retails for $250 and the regular edition is $59.99 (both can be ordered here if you don’t want to chance the contest). Pre-orders are open now and the book ships June 20th.

So, get to emailing. Dig through your stunt-man Uncle’s old pics, browse your personal collection… do what you gotta do and get me some sweet behind the scenes pictures! You have from right now until noon CST Monday, May 30th to get me your submission. The winner will be chosen immediately and the winning BTS pic will be featured here.

Speaking of featured here, the Jaws: Memories From Martha’s Vineyard folks have given me four never before seen photos from the book to post along with this contest. Check them out and realize the below is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s featured in their fantastic book.

Thanks to Jim Beller and Carrie Fyler for all the help in arranging this contest and for putting together such a wonderful and detailed look at the production of my favorite film of all time. For more information on the book visit their website here.

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at

Tomorrow’s behind the scenes pic would like four whole fried chickens and a coke.

Quint, just curious....are you afraid to swim in the ocean?

    by Bobo_Vision

As someone who watched this very young....I choose not to swim in waters which I feel are not meant for man. Given that this is clearly your favorite you swim in the ocean?

  • May 25, 2011, 9:51 p.m. CST

    by Quint

Yep, but I start getting nervous when my feet aren't touching the sand anymore, that's for sure.

  • May 25, 2011, 9:52 p.m. CST

    And you work for AICN?

    by Bobo_Vision

Or perhaps run AICN? I only ever see you post immediately after articles are posted.

Can we PLEASE see The Shark is still working? In theaters?

    by Proman1984

    And on Blu-ray!

  • May 25, 2011, 10:21 p.m. CST

yeah, what the hell is going on with the shark is still working?

    by Billy_D_Williams

heard alot of great things about it

  • May 25, 2011, 10:21 p.m. CST

    by bellscorners

Please come back and do something like this movie again. I wonder what a Spielberg remake of Jaws would look like... I don't think it would be a good thing.

  • May 25, 2011, 10:32 p.m. CST

    oh there's 1 shark

    by GuyRitchieRocks

on top right. he look funny

  • May 25, 2011, 10:36 p.m. CST

    Good picture of Roy

    by Kraven Morehead

he basically looks like he wants to say how hot he is while the rest of us want to tell him that he might be working on the most demographically sound movie ever. That movie is the epitome of something you walk in on and next thing you know Roy and Mr. Holland are swimming home on a couple of barrels.

  • May 25, 2011, 10:36 p.m. CST

if Spielberg remade jaws, he wouldn't blow it up at the end

    Shark is Still Working

    by Quint

Last I heard their rights issues looked to be clearing up, but I don't know if that ever panned out. If they get a release you better believe I'll splash it all over AICN!

  • May 25, 2011, 10:43 p.m. CST

4th pic looks like the dolly-in/zoom-out shot...

    by justmyluck

...which, with the successive edits on Brody with frame wipes of passers by, was probably the most impressive little bit of cinema craft thing Spielberg ever did.

  • May 25, 2011, 10:44 p.m. CST

    Yep, cinema history right there.

The last pic of Roy Scheider and Lorraine Grey...

    by tritium

must be the preparation for the infamous "reverse dolly zoom" effect because we can see the two planks on which wheels of the dolly/camera will move upon as it closes in on Scheider. Never seen this behind the scenes pic before...VERY COOL!

  • May 26, 2011, 12:18 a.m. CST

Shit..."Justmyluck", didn't see your previous post!

    by tritium

Pic of the day like that...

    by kermit_the_fraud

swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin'..... JAWS is one of those movies that plays well ANY DAMN TIME. Whenever you stumble across it on the telly....whenever you just can't decide on what to put on from your shelf....just whenever. Here's to swimmin' with bow-legged wimmen.

  • May 26, 2011, 12:56 a.m. CST

  • May 26, 2011, 12:57 a.m. CST

    by Cheif Brody

Fuckin A! I am getting that book ASAP! Thanks for the heads up, Quint.
That 1st pic with Bruce looks like it might be from JAWS 2, though. Can't seem to place that particular scene from the original movie.
The Bruce in JAWS 2 was a lil ragged if I remember correctly...and that one looks like he's been thru the ringer.

  • May 26, 2011, 1:09 a.m. CST

    That's one bad hat, Harry!

    by Zardoz

I love Jaws so much. Just saw it again last month at The Castro. Audience went nuts for it! I loved watching the newbs freak out at certain moments in the film. The shark is definitely still working!

  • Ya, because that's wouldn't be too hard. "Please, attempt to capture lightning in a bottle twice. And when you fail I will moan on and on about it for the rest of my life." Everybody wants something original but nobody wants anything original.

  • May 26, 2011, 2:32 a.m. CST

    Book looks amazing.

    by MoffatBabies

Wish I knew where my old pictures were. Might not be behind the scenes, but when I was a kid, I got to sit in the cockpit of a replica of the plane in the beginning of Raiders. Now, normally that wouldn't be a big deal, but cool. The thing is, this was a replica made by the guy that loaned his plane, THE plane used in the beginning of Raiders. He told me tales of it being ruined, showed me pics of he and Spielberg, he and Harrison Ford, let me wear a hat from the production, just spent a huge amount of time with me, invited me into his home and showed me photo albums from his part of the production. Amazing experience for a kid that was just a gigantic fan of the movie and had seen it well over 60 times in the cinema. (I befriended the theater owner and after about 10 times paying for the movie he stopped charging me and just let me watch it as many times as I wanted free) As luck would have it, I met a stuntman who had worked for Spielberg when my sister and I I sold him a puppy. He told me about a small airport where this guy had a replica of the plane used in the movie. I talked my family into taking me out there to see it. I lucked out that the guy was just a cool person and liked kids. I'll never forget that. I know it wouldn't really count as a BTS picture(s), but this has inspired me to go dig them up. If I find them, I'll send them in for the hell of it. As long as everyone promises not to laugh at my late 70s hair.

    Robert Shaw and Roy Scheider

    by alan_poon

They don't make em like that anymore. Absolutely believable actors who you felt could be a cop or a fisherman in real life. Not like 90% of the Hollywood pansies today playing dress up.

  • May 26, 2011, 4:06 a.m. CST

I told you to never do that again.

    Absolutely incredible film...

    by Lee

I make sure to watch it a couple of times a year and let myself get totally absorbed. Nothing like sitting with the lights off and spending the fourth of July in Amity. Only Aliens comes close to the sheer spectacle and so easily lends itself to repeated viewings. Probably the best movie ever made; if not, it comes pretty damn close.

and along comes Quint with a hive of more. Kudos from Choppah

  • May 26, 2011, 8:03 a.m. CST

JAWS is the greatest film of all time.

    Thus spake CHOPPAH.

  • May 26, 2011, 8:06 a.m. CST

I'm glad Lorraine Gary got the part. It's nepotism that worked.

Plus, for years, she formed CHOPPAH's and, I'm sure, many others' vision of an ideal MILF. Damn, I really feel like gettin' drunk and foolin' around this morning. Nothing like waking up the wife with a little surprise sexin'. Don't worry, she won't mind as long as I play the JAWS theme in the lead up.

to be tales from the locals of Shaw getting liquored up and getting into some sort of mischief...

  • Newsflash, dudes: Spielberg is not the same person he used to be when he was 30 years old. Spielberg is a middle 60s guy. that alone makes him different. He is not the same guy, so why would he make the same type of movies again? He can't. And even if he tried, it would end up with a pastiche. Spielberg should be making the movies he wants to make that he fells he should make. End of story.

Everyone in the whole goddamn cast looks like they could be their fictional counterpart. Murray Hamilton's Larry Vaughn IS the sleazy small-town mayor; Lorraine Gary's Ellen Brody IS the worldly yet kind MILF; Richard Dreyfuss' Matt Hooper IS the brilliant and scruffy but no-bullshit college boy.
