Cannes bans Von Trier for inappropriate press humor...
Hey folks, Harry here... I'm not the biggest champion for Lars Von Trier, I think he's immensely talented as a filmmaker, but I've never really liked the man as I've seen him through interviews and appearances. But today I woke up to find Lars Von Trier banned for this:
Now - seems to me that Von Trier was attempting to tell an awkward and embarrassing story about discovering that his parents were Nazis during the war... and so he is in fact a Nazi by birthright and has attempted to reconcile this embarrassing bit of family history. But as Lars got some awkward laughs, he continued to let the mouth flap - next thing ya know, he's understanding Hitler. Which I don't feel is a remark that should get one banned from Cannes... He wasn't saying that he understood why Hitler embarked upon the Holocaust & WWII, but if you pay attention, he said he understood Hitler there at the end in the bunker... which was a joke about wanting to commit suicide, which I feel was the feeling he felt while telling this errant story. Right?
OR - are we to take him at face value, Lars Von Triers is a self-proclaimed Nazi. This whole story kind of drives me crazy. But I felt y'all should be given a forum to discuss this. Here's the latest from the LA TIMES

Here's my final comments on the Von Trier's situation

He sucks.BreAking the waves/Dancer in the Dark were decent films...
by BILLY
But everything else's absolute crap.I will acknowledge that because of his dogma98 doctrine...some parts of Antichristwere stunning...but overall he is just flat-out awful as a filmmaker.if he was such cenaphile...he should do something that challenges him...like an action flick or a rom com.oranything with a regular narrative
-
Maybe Saturday is the end of days.
-
Maybe if the French weren't so butt-hurt of getting their asses handed to them by the Germans, they wouldn't have overreacted. Again, this is a country that thought the MAGINOT LINE good idea.
-
...when we condemn a drunken Mel Gibson. World is full of hypocrites.
-
When I watched this yesterday one of the most telling moments I thought was von Trier's madly trembling hands. His attempt to turn an awkward, artifical moment into something comical, from tragedy, kind of died before it left his lips. The Canne committee's banning of him from Cannes turns something all too human and imperfect, into pure comedy. A happy ending in which von Trier, the lead protagonist, still suffers. I'm sure his depressive, neurotic self will appreciate the gift.
-
or was it fisted? I forget... why is that Harry, you need the first post in the talk back... it's your "story" or "article", so you tech. have the first "post"...
-
I think it's pretty well established that you don't joke about that. The guy is banned because he was stupid. I don't think it matters that he might have been trying to be funny. Gilbert Gottfried got fired by Aflac over an inappropriate joke that was kind of funny and I didn't think that was fair, but this was appropriately handled. This isn't political correctness run amok.. this is comparing yourself to one of the most despicable and evil human beings to walk the planet.
-
As anyone can tell, if you've ever been forced to sit through a "french comedy", or even worse a "french sex comedy". They take Nazi's deadly seriously over there. So yeah, there's no way they were going to look at what he said in a rational way. This was a knee-jerk reaction by people who are not capable of using their brains once someone waves the Red Flag of "Nazi" in front of them.
-
like saying you understand "Osama" over here. Easy for us American's to make light of Nazis and Hitler, because he didn't destroy our infastructure and murder children over here.
-
Because Kirsten already looks uncomfortable from the get go. And he keeps eyeing her down as he's trying to talk, making her skin crawl. Poor Dunst, ha! What an awkward moment. You can see early on during his stumbling words that he kind of pauses and realizes he talked himself into a ditch, BUT HE KEEPS GOING!
-
i think people von Trier fans will give him a pass and get mad at the "reactionaries" when the same people might have gotten enflamed over Mel Gibson's remarks and behavior. is there a difference between them? perhaps. certainly in the degree of vitriol. but if nothing else, this OUGHT to reveal to Von Trier fans just what an empty-headed moron he HAS ALWAYS been. (and his films are just a symptom of that). Next up, debunking the "genius" of Terence Malick.
-
Sometimes I wonder if Lars Von Trier understands Lars Von Trier.
-
Banning von Trier for an awkward interview is absolute bullshit. I saw this interview and actually found it very funny, as was the intention I'm sure. Von Trier never, not one second, took this whole panel serious, including the part with him proclaiming to be a nazi by birthright. He just spun his joke a little to far. I mean come on people, I'm german and even I get the joke. Mellow the fuck out!
-
I haven’t liked any of his films that I’ve seen, but this seems like an obvious overreaction to me. If someone joked about sympathizing with Bin Laden I would say the same thing. Chris Rock joked about sympathizing with OJ Simpson and that was funny. Von Trier sucks, though. Dancer in the Dark was like some sort of depression porn. All of these terrible things kept happening to Bjork that would never have actually happened in real life. Gratuitous tragedy is not nearly as fun as gratuitous nudity.
-
... you get asked to leave and don't get invited back. Saying you're on the side that raped and murdered their families is never conversation that's going to go over well. The guy's not being thrown in jail... he's being kicked out of a festival for killing the buzz. Too many people these days have such a sense of entitlement that they feel they should never suffer any repercussions at all for their behavior.

He Just Wanted to Have an Excuse To Do What He Really Wants to Do
by kevinwillis.net
""I want to be surrounded by porn people who love me for what I am, who say, 'Where do you want the erection, where do you want the penetration.' Where it's not complicated. There wouldn't be a porn star running out there saying 'Lars said this or Lars said that.'"
-
Say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism; at least it’s an ethos.
-
Terrible film. Not House of Sand and Fog terrible, but terrible, at so many levels. The only redeeming part was Bjork's soundtrack, which Lars really can't take credit for.
-
Every war in the history of mankind can be traced back to talking. Fuck talking.
-
...will be fine. His fans will still support his films and despite not being able show them in a room full of poeple full of themselves, I don't think his artistic vision will be affected to the point of ruining his career. On a side note; this is probably the worst instance of misinterpretation and selective 'hearing' I have heard of. People need to climb down from their high horses, take a shit that stinks like everyone elses, and calm the fuck down.
-
this guys is banned from Cannes, yet beaks is allowed to continue to wander the streets, think of the children!!
-
Poor Dunst.
-
The man is clearly not a Nazi sympathizer and nothing in his work should lead anyone to believe otherwise. He's reacting in pain to the knowledge that he is a descendant of people who belonged to one of the most hated classes of people in history, and he's doing it in the only way he can, by trying to turn the pain into humor. He can laugh or cry, and he chooses, in this case, to laugh (those who know anything about von Trier know that he suffers from depression...I'm sure he's done his fair share of crying over this too and didn't want to do that in public, so tried to make a joke to diffuse the tension and stress he was feeling). People like von Trier tend to wear things like this as a badge in order to remember that they should be _that_ much better, that much smarter, that much kinder, in order to _atone_ for the sins of their, or their family's, past. He's saying, "Yes, I'm a Nazi. My family willingly belonged to the Nazis. And I'm going to do everything I can to repudiate everything they stood for."

More concerned about people still giving this fuck money to make movies. How can one just flush money down the drain like that?
-
Bc Harry needed to throw in his two cents on this one. I think its weird too.
-
you're a douche and probably under 21. And probably have never seen a film from outside the United States. So shut it.
-
"If I have hurt someone this morning by the words I said at the press conference, I sincerely apologise. I am not antisemitic or racially prejudiced in any way, nor am I a Nazi." He even states in the press conference that it's a joke, but we all know he provokes to get a reaction and hey presto--look what's happening.
-
Von Trier is clearly making light of anti-semitism, the holocaust and Hitler and his Nazis. He is an idiot. And what does "Israel being a pain in the ass" have anything to do with his film? And then he refers to a director as "one of God's best children." I take it back he wasn't making light, he is anti-semitic. And his films SUCK! And Polanski is a Child Rapist.
-
Will be THE SOUND OF JUDEN. A musical that follows the Von Trier family in the rolling hills of rural Germany. When a new Polish nanny is brought into the household, the children open their hearts to music and love. Until she disappears in a week, to be replaced by a new Polish nanny. A week later..... Old Scratch is even now stoking a fire just for me......
-
Cheap Lynch knock-off.
-
I think you missed Series' point.
-
And I have a love or hate relationship with most of his earlier work. I want to hurt him for the horror of watching Bjork being tortured for two hours but Dogville, Manderlay, and Antichrist are all brilliant works. He said something dumb...life will go on.

And yet they ban Von Trier for this? There is talk that he had a meeting with the powers that be at Cannes and he completely pissed them off - hence the ban. Fair enough. But ban Polanski as well. For goodness sake, the man drugged, raped and sodomised a 13 year old girl, and then fled the country to France to evade jail. That deserves punishment...but people (this site included - defend yourself Harry!) suck his a-hole every time! Society really is doomed.
-
He is certainly anti-American. He may in fact hate the Jews too. Many in Europe do and blatantly so. Who knows? What we do know is he is a moron for saying what he said. And Harry is a fucktard for trying to cut him some slack.
-
Cannes bans one of the world's most fascinating filmmakers? WTG, jackasses. Of course, von Trier, "the provocateur" is probably loving this. Or he's cowering in a dark closet somewhere worrying about throat cancer or some shit. What a weirdo. Anyway, I can't wait for his new movie!
-
Someone please explain to me how Nazism, or any other political -ism, is passed along by the parents at birth. I'm glad Cannes did what they did. The moral relativist crowd, even in the film industry, have begun to realize the limits of their equivalent worldviews and this is a good example of that being smacked right back down. Right where it should be.
-
His films are almost unwatchable for a vast majority of the human race. Everyone that works with him regrets it after because the man is so fucked up. But he gets a pass on everything from the critics and the intellectuals because of his vocal hatred of the USA. That made him an "artist" with "integrity". Now that he's babbling about being a Nazi (or whatever) it won't be hip to like him and his movies will have to stand on their own merit.
-
France has a zero tolerance policy in regards to nazis and Hitler. Look at John Galliano. He was in a drunk fit, said he hated a person because they were ugly and if Hitler had his way ugly people would have been killed (which is true). Now he's in jail for that. Europe has a different approach with the nazis and so they should.
-
I hope Von trier at least got her to show her cans in this. At least he'd be good for something.
-
Umm... OK. He was joking and they ban him. Gibson was serious, and they give him a standing ovation. Didn't they screen Brown Bunny too? OK. I'm a little confused.

People need to stop throwing Gibson and Polanski into everything.
by Chewtoy
Throwing von Trier's ass out isn't some judgment on or overall punishment for his lifetime value as a human being, it's for him using the platform they gave him to offend people at their festival. It has nothing to do with some subjective scale measuring who is worse than anyone else. If some dickweed at your party shits in the punch bowl, you can throw his ass out and not have to make sure you've also thrown out everyone else who has ever done anything wrong in their lives first.

Sitting up there aghast, watching her evening go down in flames. When you think about how much time the people involved invested in this film, it's just painful to see. I understand she did go all artistic and put herself out there with full frontal nudity and such for this role. This premiere probably had to be a big deal for her. Then that idiot runs off at the mouth during the press conference, the after party gets canceled, and the guy gets himself banned.
-
If Lars was truly kidding, then Kirsten would not have looked so painfully akward. You know she just wanted to ge the hell out of there. Her look is just priceless. You just feel for her. Good for the Cannes people to recognize a Nazi sympathizer in their group.
-
...are retarded. Gibson may not have said that shit if he wasn't drunk, but he also wouldn't have said it if he didn't mean it. I've said a lot of stupid shit while drunk that I never would have said while I was sober, but it doesn't mean I wouldn't think it. It's completely obvious that Lars was just doing a very bad job of telling a very tasteless joke. Big deal.

Lars Von Trier is a genius film maker, so he can say whatever he wants.
by Arafel
Geniuses, like Lars Von Trier, don't have to live by the same rules as normal society. Therefore, it allows him to say whatever he wants. When you are a genius, and I know this very well, you can go beyond the boundaries that hinder normal men. You don't hate Lars Von Trier, you are jealous of his genius. Don't be, because no matter how hard you try, you will never be able to accomplish what he has. Just be content with what little you have.
-
He kinda failed at life there. "How can I get out of this sentence?" "Well we have another question for you here..." *grabs shovel* "Fuck it! I'ma keep digging! Okay, I'm a Nazi." Really makes it hard to feel bad for him.

Look you can argue all you want about whether he said if been banned it not, but bottom line us no one really thought it was funny and he obviously gets off on pushing buttons. For people noticing how awkward kirsten is looking it wasn't just this comment. Previously in the presser he said that his next film would be a full on porn because kirsten was insisting she get some penetration next time. He says this next to a woman who just went full frontal in a movie for him because she trusted him as an artist. Comments like that betray that trust. Ban or know the guy is undeniably an asshole!

Firstly, people need to think before they talk. This blowing nonsense out of your ass is just crazy. I get that artists are quirky at times but delving into Nazi rants is just over the top. Secondly, there's a pretty amazing comic strip poking fun at Von Trier's tirade on this site therefor the reference to the Bear Jew: http://oscarandozcar.com/ Third, I'm kinda surprised he was ejected from the event. I expected the French to just brush it off but it seems Cannes has a level of self respect that is quite impressive. Even if it was a joke (which I'm quite sure it was) bad taste. He's a great artist, let your work stand on its own, don't do asinine bigoted publicity just for shits and giggles. Now the world will simply look at him like a jerk.

This is why you don't make "jokes" if you're not speaking your native language
by CT1
Fuck who knows, seemed to me he was pretty complacent and forthright in his beliefs, but then tried to lighten it up.. but it's hard to tell, because it could just be "lost in translation", and he couldn't hit the beats he was going for in english-language humor, so it came off as serious, but then at the end he seems pretty self-aware of when to laugh and smile at what parts are now supposed to be a "joke".. so again, who knows? Or cares?
-
"I hate the stupid hollywood cycle of sequels, remakes and comic book movies!!! Why won't they make anything original?" " Lars Von Trier and Roman Polanski's original movies are crap and stupid and artsy fartsy because I have the mental abilities of a red squirrel!" "I don't care what their movies are about I won't support any artists whose ideals differ from mine and they are all evil bastards whose art should be locked away and never shown because I disagree with them!" "Foreign movies with subtitles are boring...so are Black and White movies. I think 'splosions are bestest" "I don't understand Von triers movies so they must be horrible and crap and he's a bad director" Look people, I am noticing a tendency in here to not be able to seperate opinion with quality. Sure I can watch Manderlay and it not be my cup of tea (which it wasn't) but I could still see , plainly in front of my face, that a quality film was made. Some of you little twerps must have awfully entitlted lives to be so dismissive of a directors attempt to wrestle his demons through his work...... Love his movies or hate them, I think he deserves a little credit.

It would have been almost as appropriate - most Germans even during Hitler's rule were Socialists, and half of Germany went under Communist rule after the Third-Reich. Besides that, I don't think he'd have gotten banned - quite the reverse, Cannes being France and all, they probably would have put him on a pedastal or something.
-
This is exactly what Lars wanted-- everyone talking about him and his new film. He will now walk away as the most discussed element of the festival. He does this all of the time and the media always falls for it.

to take this seriously. The people behind this decision must have watched a Von Trier film or two and yet they took this (bad) attempt at humour at face value? I despair.
-
that works really hard, but everyone hates because he's really awkward and people don't understand him. And there's a middle-management douche that's wanted him fired for years. And this guy is just waiting for the right fuck-up, the right mistake to fire him justifiably. Antichrist pissed off all the wrong people for all the wrong reasons and you know he rubs people the wrong way... almost always in association with the press. So I think this was just inevitable. In other words, I'm not surprised at ALL. And eventually they'll be kissing his ass.

Granted, if he didn't say dumb shit like this nobody would know he even had a film out. But, my point is that even given this silly publicity stunt NOBODY is still going to see this crap. Because, it is not relevant and nobody cares about Lars Von Trier except for pretentious twits who think it makes them cool to do so. Truth is, deep down inside THEY don't even like it. They just pretend they do. Which is apropos, since Von Trier pretends to direct.

Movie stars and Hollywood types get a pass when it comes to saying stupid crap and having backward political and religious ideologies because their work isn't a representation of thier beliefs. It's commercial. So people don't care. I don't care who made my hamburger at Applebees. If a filmmaker or actor is selling his/her film as 'art', as Von Douche does, and is revealed to be a phony or a bigot, the films will lose the 'Art Premium'. In other words, the benefit of the doubt that artists get when they present something controversial is gone. People want to feel smart and enlightened by appreciating an artist that pushes (or destroys) the envelope (see: Harry's A Serbian Film review). But if it becomes known that the artist is an awful person, thier work will become dismissed by the art fashionistas.

Your point is completely invalid because your argument is based on speaking for EVERYONE. One of your arguments is that his films are not relevant? Relevant to what? You? Yes, people are sensitive, but there you are. If anyone has reason to be sensitive, it's people who came that close to extinction at the hands of Nazis.

MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD: "WE INVITE LARS VON TRIER TO BE HEAD OF PERSIAN FILM COUNCIL"
by BSB
"He is most excellent director of film."
-
Or maybe REDUCTIO AD HITLERUM. Unless he wanted to dirty either one up for that porno he promised. Not sure why, but I honestly believe that Miss Dirsten Kunst could probably suck a mean dick.
-
Did Von Triers just gain an energy cell? As someone who has occasionally said very crazy things that were not Freudian slips but illogical brain farts while intoxicated, I believe that when artistic people say crazy things, it should be taken with a grain of salt. I know I would hate to have people thinking my crazier ideas were my true, unhindered self, when they were in fact things that did not even make sense to my sober self. Intoxicants intoxicate. It's not a crystal ball to the soul, it's just a magnifying glass placed on obscure, malignant trains of thought that float through all our minds. Imagine your worst fears come true, that all the world saw the craziest shit you mind had committed to rna, and believed that demented content was who you truly are. We all have darkness, we all have crazy thoughts. Just because those thoughts were thought, does not mean they have credence or relevance in the subject's mind.
-
Perhaps understanding Hitler shouldn't get one banned from Cannes; however, Von Trier took his comments further by stating that he sympathized with Hitler. sym·pa·thize /ˈsɪmpəˌθaɪz/ Show Spelled[sim-puh-thahyz] Show IPA –verb (used without object), -thized, -thiz·ing. 1. to be in sympathy or agreement of feeling; share in a feeling (often followed by with ). 2. to feel a compassionate sympathy, as for suffering or trouble (often followed by with ). 3. to express sympathy or condole (often followed by with ). The man is free to see say what he will. But he needs to understand that there are consequences for his words. Perhaps a European film festival isn't the wisest place to try and articulate his embarrassing bit of family history.

It's obvious that he had a point that he was trying to make, and about 10000000000 other things crossed his mind at the same time he was trying to make that point. My guess is one of them was "wow, I wish I had thought about this a little bit more before I opened my mouth" or "well this wasn't a good idea to talk about this, too late now, go for broke, no wait, no go ahead, no wait, oh hell...". And he got distracted from his original point and crashed and burned in his delivery. That kind of thing has happened to EVERYONE at one time or another. You just keep digging yourself deeper and deeper into a hole, and find yourself with no way out of it. At least that's what I'd like to think happened. We'll see if he has anything further to say about the matter as time goes on. But I'm thinking it was just a case of him putting his foot in his mouth.

by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
They were stupid, they were insensitive and they were a blatant attempt at shock. Which is all Von Trier's films are: just a pretentious hack waving his dick at the world and trying to rub everyone's nose in his own shit so people like you can call him a "creative genius" who makes "thinking man's art." Well, I for one call Bullshit! CHOPPED!

Free speech is free speech, and yeah, guy can say whatever he wants, and yeah, I know he has a "dry" sense of humor (code for "only funny in his own head")... but come on. What a fuckstick. This is like walking into a party and dropping a turd in the punchbowl.... real cutting satire there. Of course, no publicity is bad publicity... 1000s of people today have heard of Von Trier who didn't know he existed before.
-
If it were Jar Jar Abrams who said this you would be crucifying him.
-
Its a press conference to promote a film, that Nazi even came up was wtf. Either he was doing it to shock knowing it would make the news, or because he went wildly off tangent. Either way, it was unprofessional and yes they should have bounced him. Learn how to do your job, promote the film and move along. I felt really bad for Kirsten Dunst, at least a celebrity who knew automatically just what kind of hole the director was digging for himself.
-
Dancer in the Dark was definitely not a pretentious hack waving his dick at the world. Nor was Antichrist, it isn't the most watchable film around, but it's an interesting look at the psychological effects of your sexuality being responsible for the death of your child. It actually made me understand what that would feel like, which is for better or for worse an accomplishment. Let's not pretend that any level of moral high ground is at play when it comes to the shunning of celebrities. It's about one thing and one thing only, reveling in the suffering of someone famous.
-

smackfu, we just happen to disagree on Von Trier
by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
I'm not saying that he doesn't have a right to make the kind of films he does, as long as people will continue to fund them. Personally, I think they're just throwing money into a black hole. I just don't find any artistic merit in his work. He is like the Uwe Bowel of art films. But, that is just my opinion and the opinion of most people. I like Lynch, Greenaway, Jodorowski so I am no stranger to challenging filmmaking.
-
A few years back, some Black Journalist had mentioned to Stone, how much he loved Scarface. Stone then responded in a nonchalant manner: "All the N*ggers love Scarface".LMMFAO Wether he was making an poor attempt at humor or just being some arrogant racist, that was uncalled for. And to some degree, I can understand why many people view Von Tier's comment as offensive if not insensitive. After watching a few Documentaries on Auschitwz and not to mention films like The Grey Zone that potray horrific situations within a Nazi interment camp, there's really not a time or place for said remarks. Let Lars make a joke about Blacks and slavery only to have the fireworks ignite up his ass. (0:'

Sigh, all I want to know is how naked Dunst gets in this film, really
by Jaka
However, since the topic is these idiotic comments, I'll give an opinion on that. I don't think he actually meant that he is a Nazi, was a Nazi, supports Nazis or Hitler. If you listen carefully to everything he says and put it in the proper context I think that's pretty clear. But I DO think the comments are still several different kinds of foot in mouth ridiculous - totally ignorant and completely unfunny. The fact that he couldn't tell that by the way the people around him were reacting is kind of disappointing on another level, but that's really neither here nor there. Still, I don't believe banning him from Cannes is really any kind of a punishment. The correct punishment would have been to let him stay and be questioned by every single reporter over and over regarding what he mean, what was he trying to say, does he understand what he said, does he understand how what he said is being interpreted, etc. etc. etc. THAT would have been pure torture for the guy and a much more fitting result. Forcing him to leave feels a bit like letting him off easy, to me.

I've ALWAYS thought that film was absolutely atrocious, but whenever I've discussed it with people the go on ad on about how good it is. How it made them "cry". Bleh. Just an awful, manipulative piece of crap film. Same with Antichrist, only that one throws in the shock gimmick, too. And the fact that Bjork, who is known to be an extremely open and giving person (to everyone other than paparazzi, lol), said she would never act again because of her experience with Von Trier says A LOT about the guy, imo.

there was an unknown actor who desperately wanted to play in Trier's film.he didnt mind what role he would end up to play,he even didnt want to be paid as long as Trier would let him play in the movie. Trier told him that if he would let him pee on him as he was standing, then he would allow him to play in his movie. The actor agreed and Tier in front of the crew, unzipped and started peeing on the poor actor while he was standing on his feet. Now i dont know if that rumor is true or some of the usual yellow paper gossip, but on the other hand Trier seems one of those pathetic arrogant pricks who wouldnt mind to exploit the need or desire of someone else and pull a stunt like that. anyway.
