Not anime, but something that I've been looking forward to...

JACKBOOTS ON WHITEHALL will be available on on DVD, VOD and Digitally July 26th, 2011

On the South Coast of England, Chris, a young farm worker, dreams of the chance to join the army and fight in exciting new lands. His chance comes when the three top Nazi leaders, the enormous Goering, the malnourished Goebbels and the scarily campy Himmler, hatch a plan to invade England by drilling under the English Channel and into the heart of London. With the entire British army stuck in Dunkirk and no military support to defend the country, Churchill issues a final radio broadcast from his bunker in Downing Street – a cry for help.

On July 26, New Video’s Flatiron Film Company will release the supermarionation World War II farce, Jackboots on Whitehall, for the first time in the U.S. across cable VOD, digital platforms and DVD. Team America meets Inglourious Basterds in this hilarious feature film debut from Scottish brothers Edward and Rory McHenry, with an all-star cast of voices including Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting/Star Wars Trilogy), Alan Cumming (X2/The Good Wife), Dominic West (The Wire/300), Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day/An Education), Tom Wilkinson (The Green Hornet/Michael Clayton), Timothy Spall (The King’s Speech/Harry Potter), and Richard E. Grant (Prêt à Porter/Gosford Park), among others.

I second that, WTH is up with Yamato's release in the US?

    by Stalkeye

As for Tekken, I have seen it over 6 months ago.Better than both Street Fighter films which aint saying too much. but not as forgettable as that DOA film. I'm anxious to get my hands on the Gantz Blu Ray, however.

  • Any idea what the quality of the transfer is going to be like? And if it'll have any special features? The Amazon page doesn't tell me much, and the really low price tag makes me suspicious ($12.99). http://www.amazon.com/Cowboy-Bebop-Blu-ray-Steve-Blum/dp/B004R0MF0M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1305658318&sr=8-3

    Appleseed

    by Henry Fool

I wonder if and when Masamune will complete the Appleseed manga. I first started reading it in 1988, when it was translated by Studio Proteus and released through Eclipse comics. Studio Proteus, along with Viz, was the first outfit to really start translating manga for Western audiences. That was back before they started releasing books in their unflopped format.

Appleseed, the manga, was some of the most sophisticated sci-fi available in the world of comic books. Having read the books, the two CG movies seemed fairly dumbed down by comparison. The original manga featured the same sophisticated as "Ghost in the Shell". Yet, it went on hiatus after book four and the series was never given a proper finale. I hope Shirow returns to that world at some point but it's been eight years since he's released a new manga.

His last work was the barely comprehensible sequel to "GITS" which still puzzles me whenever I try to read it. I can see why Mamoru Oshii decided to make the sequel focus on Batou & Togusa. Any attempts to adapt 'Man-Machine Interface' would have been like having a really confusing mushroom trip.

Still, the original GITS and Appleseed remain masterpieces of 80's manga. Alongside "Akira" they remain among my favorite mangas of all time. The manga genre is oversaturated with a lot of crap (i.e. androgynous boys with giant swords, sorceress chicks in lingerie). But I hope every Japanfanboy (or girl) here will take the time to read the above mentioned works.

BTW, am I the only one who prefers the Death Note manga to the anime? I like the TV series but they royally screwed up in their depiction of Near. Near was such a lively, charismatic character in the manga. In the 'toon, he's dour and kind of sounds like Marge Simpson. They should have had Alessandro Juliani voice both Near and L.

The same thing goes for Naoki Urasawa's "Monster". The manga is a work of genius. The anime, not so much...
