Early EXPENDABLES 2 Art + Plot Description (!?) Revealed!!
Merrick here...
Looks like THE EXPENDABLES sequel is being pimped at Cannes and THIS piece at FirstShowing brings us a glimpse of early promotional artwork for the project.
Concurrently, AB King points us to THIS page on Nu Image's website which presents a smaller version of the image above, and also teases the film's plotline.
NOTE THAT A SIGNIFICANT SPOILER IS CONTAINED IN THE OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS BELOW...
SPOILER!!
The Expendables are back and this time it's personal! After Tool (Mickey Rourke), the heart and soul of the Expendables, is brutally murdered on a mission, his comrades swear to avenge him. They're not the only ones who want blood. Tool’s beautiful young and wild daughter Fiona embarks on her own revenge mission, complicating matters when she is captured and ransomed by a ruthless dictator plotting to destroy a resistance movement. Now Barney and the Expendables must risk everything to save her and humanity.
Last I heard, and I may be wrong about this, the script for EXPENDABLES 2 has yet to be completed and The Powers That Be haven't made a final selection regarding the picture's director (Stallone is in the film, but won't be directing this time around). This said, EXPENDABLES 2 has been in development for some time now and a fair amount of consideration has been given to it already - so I'd expect announcements re: helmer, manly man guest appearances, and whatnot to come along shortly.

Stallone is great fun to watch.
-
I wanted to enjoy The Expendables but the action and dialogue were really weak. Just didn't flow, ya dig? I hope they make improvements. I'm onboard anyway, I just want to love it.

Biggest BitTorrent Downloading Case in U.S. History Targets 23,000 Defendants
by KilliK
At least 23,000 file sharers soon will likely get notified they are being sued for downloading the Expendables in what has become the single largest illegal-BitTorrent-downloading case in U.S. history. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/05/biggest-bittorrent-case/

...cos nothing could be worse than the meandering, self-indulgent first installment. Plain and simple, it was a painful reminder of how much time has passed since many of these guys were in their viable prime. It was laughable, really. Even Statham was phoning it in, and that's saying something. Nothing but indulged egos at play.
-
actor who can act and who gave the most emotional scene in the first one, while they are recycling the same plot: dictator capturing a young woman and the guys are going to save her. jesus.

They need to get a proper old school action director for this
by KEVIN_COSTNERS_RECYCLED_PISS
This first one was marketed as a good old fashioned 80's throwback but in reality it was nothing of the sort. Stallone was trying too hard to mimic the shitty 'MTV' style/shakey cam bullshit everyone has been doing for the past decade. Plus, CG blood looks like CG blood... give me squibs any day.

The first one was crap, and this looks to be about the same
by The Krypton Kid
Sorry if I'm coming off like a hater, but the first one was riddled with forced, unfunny one-liners/banter and hampered by Stallone/Statham hogging the camera and a monosyllabic Dolph Lundgren.
-
...but that poster sucks very, very hard. However, I'm still totally psyched for part 2.
-
Mark my words, Sly is going get the Lohan.
-
How hoary can you get?
-
Love to see him direct Stallone in an R rated film.
-
his whole career. arnie was described best by the great australian writer, novelist, broadcaster and legendary observer tv critic Clive james as walnut stuff with condoms.
-
I found myself really liking pt 1 (some of it was poor but overall I had a good time), but this synopsis is a worry - waaaay too similar to the first film. I know the plot will come a distant second to the action but still... Whatever happened to Stallone's "pt 2 will be a tribute to martial arts movies"?
-
The first Expendables was very dissapointing. Dont care if a second gets made.
-
...cuz I do. We're a few years beyond the obligatory all-star scavenger hunt movie as well. Rat Race was the last one, wasn't it?
-
hardcore, badass female who is ought for revenge.mr Sly i thought the Expendables was a MAN movie? now i wouldnt mind this kind of addition if you we bring in for the role some popular female action star from the 80s ie Synthia Rothrock but it is pretty clear that you are going to use your ordinary average young female face from Hollywood who looks tough maybe Michelle Rodriguez or worse maybe some more sexy and less tough-looking chick Jessica Alba,ScarJo etc at least you could introduce us a young martial arts/sports woman who might be interested to take a shot in the cinematic action genre ie Bruce Lee's daughter but as usual we will end up with the sexy hollywood chick who does 2-3 stunts and we are supposed to accept that she knows how to kick ass.right.
-
Good call. Isn't John McTiernan back in the game? He would be ideal for this.
-
.....and make another badass film!
-
Dolph better be in this film! His character was my favorite.
-
Save a girl from a ruthless dictator. How about you guys actually grow some REAL balls and take down Al Qaeda or something.

I WANT the movies to be good, but that synopsis sounds like crap on a poopstick
by Centauri
These guys are EXPENDABLES. They shouldn't be going on missions to save some woman. They should be using women and dropping them like used kleenex. Taking out Qadafy, or Bin Laden like dudes is what we should be seeing.
-
Besides, a friend of mine tattoos Stallone, and has told me several stories about what a prick he is. Plus he's a fucking midget.
-
And what's with an Xray of Bin Laden's skull on the poster?
-
The first did leave some things to be desired but it was still a fun movie. I seriously doubt that they would recycle the first movie's plot as much as this article suggests. Also, I read a couple days ago that Vandamme has been cast as a villain in the new movie.
-
We already did the whole spunky damsel in distress thing...
-
if there were midgets in the first film, then I would've paid to see it. Stallone is a wannabe midget! A fake midget, a fidget if you will!
-

There were reports that Van damme would be playing the villian
by Redhead_Redemption
AICN of course never posted the story, but every other site picked it up Also I don't think tool's murder is a big spoiler...It's in the fucking synopsis from the studio and likely happens within the first 10 mins of the film. This site needs to understand what exactly a spoiler is

Sly had asked me to direct this installemnt, but was heartbroken when i had to decline
by JettL93
I just have such a busy schedult what with batman 3 and avengers starting up as well as doing a final polish on the superman and james bond scripts But me and sly have been friends for close to 40 years so he understood (I can rmember training him for all of the rocky films and being his muse during late night script rewrites). I'm still going to be helping out with the script but i just don't have the time to direct
-
like the first one. I know we've got some older guys here, but if you have to fast cut and shake the camera so much that it's impossible to tell what's going on, maybe tone the action down a little.

is played by Mickey Rourke in a wig. That way he can still be in the movie, but he can show off his feminine side (that we all know he has). Also they can make jokes like, "I can see the resemblance" and he can say "Yes they're real". He/she can even go shirtless and just say her lack of boobs is because they were consumed by her body building pecs.
-
Stallone, Arnold, Willis.... Statham, Jackie Chan, Van Damme, The Rock, Donnie Yen..... and special cameo by...................................................................................... CHUCK NORRIS!!!!! followed by the universe imploding

Read a brief interview with him a few days ago. He said he's back, as is most of the cast. Van Damme was mentioned as a villain. Think they're still chasing Bruce Muthafuckin Willis to be the big bad - hope they get him!

stalone and myself recently had lunch with Kurt russell and we think the role of FBI agent harrison would be perfect for him. sly also says that dwayne johnson would make for a great addition if his schedule would allow for it
-
Does this mean Shrek joins the group?
-
God I hope this will be more of a stallone arnold action movie, other than the 10 secs arnold was in the 1st. There should be no reason to stop him now
-
The first has its weaknesses but it was a lot of fun. And I hope Sly will make it a much better movie with more Lundgren. 'Cause I think he was the best fuckin' character in the first one. I'm gonna enjoy this. I will.
-
will it be an established action chick like Michelle Rodriguez or will they just go with some model trying to be an actress?
-
Isn't The Rock going to take over the Fast and Furious franchise? Don't you think that's over-saturation? Also, sorry to hear that you're not directing after all. But, with all that you have going on, it's quite understandable. Cheers.
-
But since that's both the best and most obvious idea, it's clear that they've no intention of doing it.

bsb, the action and dialogue were "weak" because of the writer & director
by Mennen
agreed.
-
The first film only went on to prove that women are not needed unless they're nameless hostages. Although I would welcome a crazy bat shit insane woman guerilla commander as a villian henchman 2nd or 3rd in command. She does ruthless things, then they kill her in an awesome way. Of course they should cast an actual old school female action star. And if they do get someone from lately, Michelle Rodriguez is the only one who comes to mind sadly... Unless they get a hong kong female action star which can be awesome. Shed a spotlight on the female fighting talent from there or Korea or Thailand or whatever... But no more relationship, my wife my family bullshit... The first half of the Expendables SUCKED because of it. Thankfully the second half was awesome!!! But still having a first suckable half diminishes your entire movie. Also get more Arnold and Willis and have them do some more shit, even if it's a little more to build up to something epic for Expendables 3. Finally let's see the Expendables deployed in a legitimate warzone or totally hostile territory between factioned combatants.

DOLPH LUNDGREN WOULD PROBABLY END UP DIRECTING THIS!! READ ON!!
by brocknroll
Many of you don't think this will happen but I think it's a huge possibility. Dolph Lundgren is a film director himself, he mostly directed his own straight to DVD movies that he starred the leading roles in like "Command Performance, "The Killing Machine", etc. The reason Dolph would be a perfect replacement director for Sly on the "Expendables 2" is because Dolph's knows Sly's directing style better than anybody, plus, Dolph is great at making action movies. His movies maybe straight to DVD but that doesn't mean they are bad flicks. Plus, another reason it could be a possibility that Dolph could direct is that Sly had Dolph star in two of his films: "Rocky IV" and "Expendables". So Sly would want to return the favor in having Dolph direct "The Expendables" sequel. Don't be surprised if Dolph could be directing the next film.
-
I could ALMOST tell what what going on in the first one so I'm hoping they shorten the 2 second cuts to under a second for the fight scenes. That way it all blurs together and I don't have to even have my eyes open to enjoy the film. Loved the final battle with all that crazy shit going on. Too bad it looked like a 16 year old meth addict edited it. Even Michael Bay and Tony Scott were like "what the fuck dude? Slow it down a little!". Want to know how to shoot/edit an action scene, Stallone? Watch Tron Legacy.

Stallone corrected the shaky cam/quick-cut stuff in the Director's Cut...
by Wes_Reviews_
He said so on Twitter. So, for those who disliked that being employed in the movie, hopefully, you'll give the director's cut a rent once its released. I think the difference will be night and day, and I'm pretty excited to see what Sly's done with the movie. The shaky cam/quick cut stuff was the only thing I had a problem with.
-
That was Shinedown.

I love that last line. A ruthless dictator (same as first flick, basically), saving a girl (same as first flick, basically), helping a resistance (same, same, same), but then they throw out "save her and HUMANITY." What, does this "ruthless dictator" (is he Mexican? He must be Mexican) have some sort of Doomsday device? Sounds absolutely terrible. I'm glad to see that people are admitting now how awful the first one was. It was one of the most disappointing things I saw that year. I was all hopped up on how great the last Rambo was, and this was such a letdown. At the time, though, all the talkbackers were standing by this dung dropping. The action was terrible, the story was terrible, the acting was worse than terrible. And the LOOK of the film was terrible, too. Come on, Stallone. Raise your game.
-
Please don't encourage Jettl93. You're undoing all the good work that his shrink is doing. Plus which, it's also costing his parents a fortune in medication. Everytime someone helps to solidify his delusions it puts him back another six months and his family are keen for him to rejoin society one day.
-
Ticked me off that a guy like Jet Li was totally wasted in this film, especially seeing as how Statham and Li had worked together a couple times before. You'd think Statham would have said something to Stallone like, 'Hey, Sly, you know we've got one of the world's top action stars here in this little guy, you think maybe you could give him something to do other than a 2-minute 'fight' with Dolphie?' blehhh

It’s funnier when you keep it at least a little believable - like you are some well connected behind-the-scenes guy, but not a big-name director and Stallone’s best friend etc. That is just a bit over the top. I expect you are just having an off day and will return to your usual form in future posts.

-
ass deep in mud and blood in some rice patty or whatnot.
-
Nine bullets for nine lives...
-
Bit like Fast Five with Diesel going against The Rock. Everyone wanted to see that fight. People will want to see the same in the Expendables.
-
hopefully they have a new style for the actual artwork for the sequel because that looks p-shopped by some WWE fan. Also why the hell does it sound like it has the same plot as the first film? I wanna see Arnie in a major role and also Bruce Willis as the 'supervillain' that Sly spoke of shortly after the first film came out. Also since Sly is now not directing it he needs to get someone like Renny Harlin or Russell Mulcahy or Albert Pyun to direct it. You know, people that actually directed 80's action films.
-
Hope AB is right and that's not the true plot. Personally, I wanted to see Stallone's team and Arnold's cooperate, possibly against (or in some way involving) Bruce Willis. Then the first film's scene in the church will look like brilliant foreshadowing not just a neat scene. A plot like the one mentioned sounds serviceable, but not too imaginative, and I would like to see it ratcheted up a notch for the sequel, as plot is one place I thought the first needed work. Still anxious too see this made.
-
How about this for a plot play-about Barney left a man behind on a mission, something made it impossible to save him. So he was left for dead. He was captured and abused for years. They cut off his hands. Burned off his face with acid, and bruned his balls off. The film opens with him escaping. His captors planned to toss his body along with several others out of a plane on hangman nooses. We see a few of the POW thrown from the plane hanging by their necks, all of this is being video taped - this is just a different extreme version of killing the terrorist want to show the united states in order to scare us. Our handless nutless face guy fights back and the plane crashes into the ocean. A small fishing boat finds him and he is taken to a hospital. He refuses to give his name. After a long stay in a hospital as John Doe. He comes back to America and seeks revenge against Barney and the team. He goes after one of the team members family. Killing them outright. It's nto about hostages, it's about pain.
-
Gina Carano should be in this, whether or not that plotline is true.... IF there's a female Expendable she would be it.
-
I honestly think it would be better to have it be one of the Expendables with a real grudge against the team because they left him for dead. There are several ways for him to escape. The countries own native forces could have attacked the guerrilla camp where he was being held. He cant be whole. He must be horribly disfigured. I'd prefer a straight up revenger with a character who used to be a part of team. It could add another layer to gunners drug and alcohol problems. Barneys need to go back. Mothers semi-sorta retirement Doing the re-hostage game, and killing Tool (one of the most interesting characters of the group in the opening moments of the film) is an easy out and a terrible choice IMHO.
-

The first was a surprise, I went expecting something cheesy and what I got was, well, something cheesy but in a good way. You can have your CGI laden shitfests, I prefer REAL tough guys battling it out. Now only if a fellow countryman of mine would appear in this movie, he his known for his round-house kicks, womanizing ways, right-arm flexing and occasional substance abuse………..

The Huffington Post, Hilary Moss, First Posted 04/21/11: A new study out of the University of Bologna suggests that using plus-size models on the catwalk and in advertisements could make women fat. In their paper "Thinness and Obesity: A Model of Food Consumption, Health Concerns, and Social Pressure," Dr. Davide Dragone and Dr. Luca Savorelli cite the relationships between Italy, Germany and Spain and their respective fashion communities to produce more plus-sized clothes and uphold a minimum size for models. They write: When reading the content of the agreements, it is clear that both the government and the fashion industry agree that fashion is a powerful trend-setter. It not only influences what clothes, styles and colors are trendy, but also determines how a person should appear to be desirable. Okay, so fashion is apparently super-influential. Dragone and Savorelli add: If people are underweight and stay on a diet, increasing the ideal body weight allows both aggregate welfare and health to be improved. If people are overweight and on a diet, however, increasing the ideal body weight can improve overall utility, but it worsens health because it induces people to become even more overweight. And, "Given that in the US and in Europe people are on average overweight, we conclude that these policies, even when are welfare improving, may foster the obesity epidemic." The pair also said, according to the Daily Mail, in plain language, "To promote chubby fashion models when obesity is one of the major problems of industrialised countries seems to be a paradox. Everyone has to trade off in life a number of things like the pleasure of eating and going to the gym or something as a cost. So if you just fix the average healthy weight then maybe you will throw up some incentives to be thin." Um, so far, seeing plus-size models hasn't made us any bigger. And watching size zero models lurch down the catwalk hasn't made us any skinnier, either -- if anything it's made us simultaneously revolted and ravenous. What do you think?
-
Start the movie on a plane (or boat) or something, with the crew members heading off to some exotic location to, you know, blow shit up and kill people. Take 10-15 minutes to establish the characters and setup the mission while they are in the air or on the water. Then, like 'Predator', throw them in a situation of deep peril (balls to the wall action), where they must band together, using each members different skill-set, or die! And, if you really want to make us happy, have them run into a different elite group (headed by the Governator, naturally) who are there for the same mission (to overthrow some nasty regime headed by Jaun Claude, of course). Maybe the two groups bicker and so forth before ulitmately joining forces... simple-stupid, Sly... don't over-think this thing.
-
...so many options.
-
I still think Steven Segal has to be in this for this movie to be complete. Even if its a quick cameo. If he gets Chuck Norris, Van Damnit, Arnold etc. I think getting Steve would make it all complete! :D I'm not a hard core Steve fan -- I would have said this if Arnold was missing or Van Damn.. I think in that era it was Arnold, Stallone, Seagal,Van Damn at the top of the action star heap. The late 80's and early 90's was owned by these guys. Lets put an exclamation point to the whole thing! I don't think there will be another chance to do it. Unless Stallone is smarter than all of us and knows something we don't. :)
-
Should be the team up that happens midway through the film. I don't see why Rourke doesn't act more in it, not like he's overworking or anything. Also, I would really like McTiernan to direct this too. I really enjoyed the first one. Great action flick, not sure why someone said it had too much shaky cam, i thought it had way less than usual now. Looking forward to it.

TOOL's garage was begging to be destroyed by the bad guys.
by GibsonUSA Returns
Like I said right after the first movie, the Expendables hung out in Tool's garage so much that it was just begging to be destroyed by bad guys...I could imagine Kimbo Slice and his goons tearing that place to pieces.

Please tell me that's not the real plot. I love Stallone, BUT.....
by IronEagle74
I wanted to love the first movie, but sadly I didn't. I'm not saying I hated it. It was okay popcorn action, but forgettable as soon as I left the showing. I was let down especially because I loved the last Rambo(2008) movie so much. That movie was such a surprise. I believe it's possible to correct an original movie's mistakes in the sequel. Look at Nanny McPhee. It's not my cup of tea, but critics loved the sequel much more than the original. It CAN be done. So, I'm hoping the Expendables 2 gets right what the first movie got wrong. Please, Stallone, don't screw this one up. It's not going to go well if it's just another run-of-the-mill dictator story. And what's with this "save her and humanity" crap? Is this dictator going to set off nukes all over the place or something?

What good is only putting guys like Dolph Lundgren and Steven Seagal in there? Most of today's young, ticket-buying audience probably barely even knows who they are. <BR><BR> Business-wise, you MUST get guys like Statham and Jet Li, who are still actively making theatrically released solo movies. They still have that public awareness. <BR><BR> Expendables 1 was a solid crop of badasses from diverse backgrounds.<BR> Sly, Arnold, Willis - 80s/90s stars.<BR> Statham/Li - 90s/00s stars<BR> Steve Austin - WWF Hall of Famer<BR> Randy Couture - UFC Hall of Famer<BR> Terry Crews - NFL star<BR> <BR><BR> You diversify for the win. If you only had the 80s guys in there, you are narrowing your audience to a bunch of older guys, many of which don't go to movies nearly as much as teenagers/college crowds. <BR><BR> Expendables 2 should follow the same formula that got the first movie to $100 million. My picks for the sequel would be:<BR><BR> Sly/Arnold - Team Leaders<BR> Steven Seagal - 80s star/UFC awareness<BR> Chuck Norris - 80s star/Internet sensation<BR> The Rock - WWE/00s star<BR> Kimbo Slice - UFC/Internet sensation<BR> Chow Yun Fat - Hong Kong legend<BR> Antonio Banderas - 90s star<BR><BR>

I'm afraid it is you who doesn't get it.

Tango & Cash back, and throw in Bruce Willis as ass kicker numero Uno. Stallone, you are my hero and I have complete trust in you. Whatever you serve me on the big screen, I enjoy to the fullest.
