News about Jodorowsky, Caro and Marilyn Manson.... sequel to EL TOPO and a film about a man in the universe!!!

Published at:  Jan 06, 2000 5:46:34 AM CST

Hey folks, one of my old editors from my SciFi Universe days has recently landed a super coup cool interview with famed eccentric filmic genius, Jodorowsky. We've written a few articles in the past about the big J... and for film fans in the know... they KNOW that Jodorowsky is just one of them cool film directors that the rest of the world isn't in the know about.... well, step up and learn. Oh... and the idea of CARO and JODOROWSKY teaming up is just... drool inducing.... here ya go.....

Harry,

I did a big interview that's in the current issue of MEAN Magazine. (MeanMag.Com)
Here's the news, straight from him:

1. Jodo has completed a script for Caro (Delicatessan, City of Lost Children). It's about "an actor who gets lost in the
universe. And that is all! Like one actor. ... The one actor multiplies himself. They will do it but the picture takes four years
till they do it. It's a question of time, from the script, from the early phase, there is a lot of time."

2. Sequel to EL TOPO? "I don't do a conventional 'Part II.' I wrote a script named 'Abelcain,' which could be story of the sons
of El Topo. I've been looking for five years for a producer to invest five million dollars in the project. Impossible."

3. Marilyn Manson: "I like this guy. His videos are very artistic. I don't know what is his musical value, but I like the optical
values. He always is breaking the limits, no? Art is always amoral. And he seems apersonal, this person. He's something
that's further than a human being.... I think he is kind of a genius, literally..."

4. Many of his graphic novels, previously untranslated into English, will be released in various forms (comics, books,
etc.) in America in 2000.

There's lots more in the interview regarding

1. Why HOLY MOUNTAIN stillisn't available in the US on legit video or DVd

2. What exactly was involved with his doomed DUNE project in the mid-'70s

3. Interest in video games, shamanism/magick, drug experiences, the Tarot, etc.

Hope this is of interest to you and your readers

    Great news!! An original returns.
Jodorowsky is the man, El Topo especially, total unsurpassed wierdness.
Manson and Jodorowsky. Not sure about that, Manson's idea of 'alternative'is far to conventional. Far too safe, teenage, shopping mall goth for me.
Spiritualised ain't a bad suggestion, I'll add Add NtoX, Aphex Twin and loads of fucked up Underground Dance music, that's the way to go.
Comix wise: the Incal books he did with Mobieus are superb.(There's a great film in there as well)

I don't have a problem with MM, frankly. Sure he cribs and commercializes stuff us kooks have been into for years, but it's a good entrance point for suburban kids to get into really hard core weirdness. Sort of like Dr. Seuss. And if he's good enough for Rose McGowan... Just promise me she'll be in the film too and I'm Happy Boy.

"Marilyn Manson a kind of genius?" Yes, it takes a genius to steal Alice Cooper's and David Bowie's old schtick and meld them together to make some money. I don't have anything against the guy, but come on, "genius" is a strong word. Savvy businessman is more like it.

    by mrbeaks

His music is unimpressive, and, due to its telegraphed nature, is devoid of any substantial shock value. He does, however, come off as a rather thoughtful guy in the interviews I've seen, which makes it difficult for me to completely write him off. I'm interested to see what Jodorowski has planned for Manson. Of one thing you can be sure..... whatever the director of SANTA SANGRE dreams up, it won't be commercial.

...wasn't Marilyn Manson supposed to make cameo appearances throughout David Lynch's Mulholland Drive series (which obviously never aired)? I think he was. And do you know that MD was supposed to be a mid-season replacement??? Instead they went with So, You Wanna Be a Millionaire! What a fucking shit show! I guess it does well in the ratings, and that's all a good businessman would care about, but that's the dumbest fucking game show ever! Argh!! And to think that MD could be on in that slot. Someone give Lynch money and let him do RONNIE ROCKET! Like, $60 million!

    Marilyn Manson

    by lizzybeth

Does the man direct his own videos? Do his own artistic design? I don't think so. Artists frequently have very little to do with the results of their music videos, they just show up. Even if he does, let's face it: all he had was a good marketing strategy. I say 'was' because he's clearly on the way out, his stuff just sits on the shelves where it used to sell like hotcakes. Someday when they look back they'll file him with the other gimmick groups, like Madonna or the Backstreet Boys, which are based on marketing ideas and not on musical talent. Like people say above, look to a real artist like Spiritualized or even Radiohead (way more depressing than Manson, and 'climbing up the walls' is scarier than Manson could ever be)
who have talent to back up their album covers.

    by lickerish_lady

Brilliant!!....All you bastards hoisting QTarantino's derivitive cinema in-jokes up on the sails of good or bad cinematic taste obviously arent worth the salt crusted in the folds of your mother's dry wrinkled puss to call Manson a hack...... AGENTCOOPER YOU DOLT...genius is also a description cast on David Bowie, who himself admits to thieving and nothing but...and for Manson to do the same is nothing new or any less valid...Art is...or should be anyway...a subjective experience...but either way..soul sucking jerk... when you spurt.." I mean, come on, when all is said and done...it all boils down to the music you put out, when you claim to be a musician. marilyn manson has not put a SINGLE GOOD SONG!!! He's a total faker and he relies TOTALLY on image." thats some goofy opinion of your own, then you go on to say you cant support him in any endeavor be it directing or starring in a film, writing for rolling stone...Come the fuck on, have you actually heard every song on all five legit albums, to back up that asinine remark?? As for Perry Farrell, I must agree with you, he can definitely back himself up with what is probably the most original music of the nineties, and not to mention he's gorgeous..although...his ultra new age spirituality is a bit draining...

...first off, thanks for the support in the "Lift the ban on 'AgentCole' Rally". All support is appreciated, for I have no idea why FatherGeek banned him. Anyway, the plot for RONNIE ROCKET (or the sales pitch) reads something like, "It's about this three foot tall guy with red hair and electricity. And...some other stuff." That's all I really know about it. However, one can read the script - it's floating around somewhere on the web. I would also like to see Lynch get to do DREAM OF THE BOVINE, which is about, "These three guys who used to be cows - but they're people now. They look like cows and they do cow-like behaviour, but they're people. They like to do things like watch cars drive by the house." I'd love to see Lynch get to do these films. If I'm not mistaken, DREAM OF THE BOVINE is a comedy where RONNIE ROCKET is more of a high budget futuristic sci-fi.

    What's with the name calling???

    by agentcooper

Lickerish Lady: I never claimed that Bowie deserved the title "genius" either (although I enjoy quite a bit of his music). If you like MM, cool, fine for you, but what he does is derivative of many of the glam rock/shock rock acts of the early to mid 1970s. Maybe Bowie stole some of his act, as well, but he was the most famous of the glam rockers, and therefore can be cited as an influence today. Like I said, I don't have anything against Marilyn Manson (he actually seems fairly intelligent in interviews), but I don't think he has anything new to say and I don't think he has much musical talent. He's using his image and his image alone to make money. Everything about him is carefully CALCULATED to SHOCK. Let us not pretend that there's more to him than makeup and contact lenses. If he means something more to you, I'm happy for you. We all need heroes. Even the Insane Clown Posse has a fan base.

    by agentcooper

I always thought that if they gave Lynch/Frost another season, or even a half season commitment, they could have pulled the show up from the depths to which it fell after Laura's killer was captured. It was starting to get interesting again, and I think they had found a way out of the hole. God, think of the possibilites: Cooper in the Black Lodge, trying to get out. Bob in Cooper, simmering with murderous rage. Harry trying to comprehend everything going on in his little town...Alas it was not to be...Any word on that supposed DVD of FWWM that contains the footage Lynch shot of the rest of the cast? That would be something I'd love to see. By the way, Cole, you didn't respond to my Phantom Menace challenge

...you should join the Lynch List. If you want to, go to www.onelist.com/subscribe/lynch-list (Panoma88, you may like that as well, and btw, I missed the LOST HIGHWAY discussion on imdb). Ayway, apparently France had a list of the top 25 films in the last 25 years. The film which received the most votes (henceforth, ranking #1) happened to be LOST HIGHWAY. Other Lynch films that made the top 25 included: THE ELEPHANT MAN and BLUE VELVET. Kubrick had: THE SHINING, FULL METAL JACKET, and BARRY LYNDON. I think that EYES WIDE SHUT and THE STRAIGHT STORY must not have been eligible. Anyway coop, I'm sure I will watch TPM again at some point. I'd be lying if I said I accept the challenge, because after seeing it twice already (reluctantly the second time) I think my opinion is pretty sound. But, if opportunity knocks, I'll keep an open mind. On a different note, the second season of TP wasn't THAT bad. There was the death of Maddy, the death of Leland, The Black Lodge, desperate love between Donna and James, Ben Horne's insanity, Jon Reneau taking over One-Eyed Jacks, Audrey's rescue mission, Windom Earle, Leo's bad luck, Truman's madness, Josie's death (doorknob), cool abstract scenes (log lady, midget, giant, etc), and all in all, I think it was still good. The biggest problem was that too many non-Lynch episodes went by, and it went off track a bit. I mean, he directed the pilot, Ep2, Ep8, Ep9, Ep14, and Ep29. If Lynch would have directed a few between 14 and 29, I think it would have been much better. Those episodes are all clearly better than the rest, and I think coop is right...Lynch had it going back on target through his direction of episode 29 alone. Imagine a thrid season with the good Dale trapped in the lodge, and the evil one roaming about Twin Peaks. (Which reminds me, I a m a firm believer that Cooper was inhabited by Bob before he even arrived at Twin Peaks. In any case, any Twin Peaks fans/Lynch fans oughta join the Lynch list...layer.

Twin Peaks, Rest In Peace, Pt. II: Electric Boogaloo

    by agentcooper

Most of the plot points you mentioned occured before the big Leland/Bob capture/death. The second season was just as good as the first until ABC made them reveal the killer. There's no doubt the series lost direction for quite a few episodes after that. I'm thinking specifically of James' affair with the rich lady and the plot to kill her husband, Little Nicky the devil-child, the Miss Twin Peaks pageant, and Ben perhaps being Donna's father. I wasn't too wild about Ben's recreation of the Civil War or Nadine's return to high school, either, but these were pretty funny subplots. They were really getting everything back in order though. I was upset they never got to expand upon that quivering hand thing that was affecting everyone right before the series' end. Anyway, Cole, don't discount the contribution of Mark Frost on the series. I'm a Lynchfan as well, but to ignore his partner isn't fair. It's a shame that Mullholland Falls isn't being given a chance. I've read the pilot script and it is very good. I think they had a good plan so what happened with Twin Peaks wouldn't happen again on their new show. Unfortunately, they never got the chance to even put it on.

You hit the nail on the head. I also didn't like the whole Jean Reneau story, that soap opera twit from Horne's Dept. Store who tried to steal Lucy from Andy, the gardener scraping his face up, the mystery restaurant critic, and David Warner. So many things went wrong in the second season: too many gratuitous deaths (just like NYPD BLUE lately), desperate attempts to be creepy or funny, etc. I'd have to say that the only good parts were those that were direct continuations from season one and anything in the Lynch-directed episodes. I've always thought TP should have been a one season mini-series, about 15 to 20 episodes tops. After that, really weird shows start to get repetitive and annoying.

Lynch has even said that the killer may NEVER have been revealed, but at the very least, it would have been a "long, long" time before the killer was revealed. I also agree with the respecting Mark Frost point you mentioned. It's obvious that Frost had a huge influence in the series, particularly Episode 7 (The season 1 finale) which he directed. That had Hillstreet Blues written all over certain scenes (ie-Andy shooting Jacque). Twin Peaks rules!!!***Eternal - you think that *I'M* CrackDaddy??? Are you sucking on the glass dick?!?! Shit, I forgot all about that pine weasel crap. You're right about David Duchovny's scenes being great. *** In a totally gratuitous attempt to pretend to be on topic, how in the hell does a complete freak like Marilyn Manson get into the pants of a stacked mega-lay like Rose McGowan?

Rose+Mr. Manson: One man's take on this important situation...

    by agentcooper

Rose is attracted to MM for three reasons: 1)Fame-He's famous, she wants to be famous. Together, they are a Famous Couple. 2)Money-He has some (See above posts about how he gets it), she wants some. 3)It's gotta really piss her mom and dad off. Oh, Rose, you rebellious little scamp. My goodness, the drug-filled orgies in which those two crazy kids must participate just boggles the mind, doesn't it?

That's right. Wasn't Mullholland Falls a terrible movie a few years back with Nick Nolte and the lovely Jennifer Connelly?

    drives v. falls...

    by cole

...well agentcooper, I have no idea if that was a film or not. Did you happen to join the Lynch List coop??? In my opinion, it is a much more interesting list, but that's a no-brainer for a Lynch fan. It seems like the only time AICN is popular is when some new STAR WARS rumor comes out (or ocassionally when new FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING rumors sprout). In any case, has anyone ever seen the commercial featuring mini-me and Mr T??? What was the creative process behind that marketing strategy??? Next thing you know, they'll have their own freakin' sit com!

    by environmentalist

I honestly can't believe that you are quoting Ronald Reagan. He was the most frightening man we ever had in office. Aside from the fact that he didn't care about the environment or the poor, he was a derranged man. Luckily, he was only a puppet. If he were really calling the shots, we'd have certainly been involved in a nuclear disaster. I don't understand how uncompassionate conservatives are always ripping on Bill Clinton when he actually stands for something positive. Unlike Reagan, who stood for evil and destruction. Just my 2 cents. Give a hoot, don't pollute.

    Caro/Manson/Lynch

    by elgyn6655321

    1. I love Caro, "Delicatesson" is so great, "Lost Children" was much more, eh, I don`t know, it was good but I liked "Deli" more. It`s also too bad that Whedon couldn`t write a better "Alien: Resurrection" script for him.
    2. Manson is no genious IMO, but he`s alright. Some of his music is crap, but some of it is actually really good. Check out "Mechanical Animals", where he switches from Cooper to Bowie. Deraritive, yes, but a good record nonetheless.
    3. "Twin Peaks" second season wasn`t as good as the first, but it`s still way better than most of the stuff on TV at the time! And let`s not forget Manson in "Lost Highway"!

I've enjoyed turning this talkback from a discussion of the El Topo sequel into a discussion of Twin Peaks with all of you. Cole, I will check into the Lynch newsgroup at home. I'm at work now and cannot subscribe. In terms of AICN's popularity, I've been visiting the site for a couple years now, and really like what it stands for: Pure Love of Film. I particularly enjoy the way Harry's love of film comes through in his writing. Say what you will ( He's a Bloated sell out, Flip-Flopping apologist, etc.), the guy has put together the site that gets me through the day. I'm out. See you all later...

    Magnolia phone #

    by darthjoe

K, this is off topic, but I figured some visitor to this site would know,... In Magnolia, what is the phone number that Phil Hoffman uses to call Frank Mackey's video order hotline? Saw the movie last night and I heard that this number was real, but I forgot to write it down. Take care!

Man, I Really Need to Start Posting Sooner...

    by saulot

About the great Manson debate-he's a musician, people have different opinions on that. Just because someone isn't all that good singing doesn't make him a bad actor. Example: LL Cool J did an okay job in Any Given Sunday, and I admit I'm not a huge LL fan. Directors are talented people; they can probably get actors to do what they want. Also, as sort of a side note, why do these info spots come in at like 6 in the morning? No normal person(ok, some people) is up then, and by the time the rest of us get here, the TalkBack is filled up. Harry, FatherGeek, whoever, try to change that so people who are busy from 9-5 with school or work can type on these things...thanks. --Saulot--

If all Manson had was image he wouldn't exist by now

    by ricky

You can go ahead based on your looks for a while, but after some time people get tired and throw you away, now, the band Marilyn Manson has been around enough time to pass that stage, and you have to admit, that there is talent, great talent, involved in a song such as "Coma White".

    Marilyn Manson=Grocery Clerk

    by bono

Brian Warner punches a time clock. He has a job. That job is being Marilyn Manson. You can't really even call him a phoney because it is all so obvious. "Marilyn Manson" was designed to make money off of disgruntled teenagers. He embodies good ol' capitalist principles. He's laughing all the way to the bank! Soon he will start appearing on HOLLYWOOD SQUARES.

    Devil's Advocate

    by alex de large

OK, just to let you all know, the whole manson glam rock thing wasn't just him trying to steal from david bowie. it was a show, a show he admitted to being what he thought the typical rock star should look like. I completely agree with ricky, if manson was completely image, he wouldn't be around today. i think it's a joke to listen to some of your 'he's just a stupid shock rocker' comments. he's not trying to scare anybody. all he's trying to do is voice his opinions, just like any of you are doing. one quick thing before i forget...was somebody saying madonna was all about image? well to quote south park: 'fuck you, buddy!' madonna kicks ass =). anyhow, back to the original point...i think the whole 'kill your god, kill your tv' thing, MistahEyahs, is really similiar to blink182's 'all the small things' video on mtv. it makes fun of all the mtv kids, and all the people they hail as great musicians, yet it was the number 1 video for god knows how long. people are blind, people are stupid and easily manipulated. and i can almost guarendamntee you that most of you manson bashers haven't actually read his lyrics, or listened to a full album or two. all that makes you is ignorant. just for fun, i challenge all of you to put your favourite musicians up for critique. good day to you all!-Alex

    JODOROWSKY!!!

    by fulci

Do any of you people actually know who Alexandro Jodorowsky is? This talkbabck has been all about MM and TP. There's only been about 3 posts from people who sound like they've actually seen a Jodorowsky film. I own El Topo, Fando and Liz, Holy Mountain and Santa Sangre and really think he's amazing, and deserves a lot more recognition. You guys are reading way too much into this whole Marilyn Manson connection, because as far as I can tell, all Jodorowsky said was that he finds MM's choice of imagery interesting. He didn't make any reference to working with the man, and that is VERY, VERY good. That sort of team-up is not healthy.
MM has some good views, but as far as I can tell he's an ego-maniacal, self-indulgent little "rock-star" prick. "OOOHHH, Trent stole the Lost Higway soundtrack from me...he's not my friend anymore." Big mistake Marilyn, Reznor was the only good thing to happen in your shitty little life. Don't get me wrong, I actually think the rest of his band is very talented. They make some pretty good music, but Manson just ruins it all the time, with his crappy voice, and "deep" lyrics. He's about as deep as those little game mats at white spot. He's K-Mart goth. But the fact is that no goth is a good goth whether he/she is "keepin' it real" or not. Jodorowsky deserves better than a no-talent hack like Manson. The difference between Manson and Jodorowsky is that Manson ripped off his predecessors, whereas Jodorowsky borrowed from his and made better product from his influences, rather than marketable crap.

Why do you all make me hate you so much?

    by tom joad

I get so sick and tired of ignorant talkbacks that I rarely defend those which I see being slagged on. I just can't always let it go. I understand the the vast majority of these talk-backers are morons of very low intelligence. Fuck off. Manson is a genious and his collaboration with Jodorowsky is going to be absolutely brilliant. Wait and see.

    low intelligence?

    by fulci

hey man, you're the one using mindless words like "fuck". If you were as intelligent as you percieve yourself, you'd be able to come up with something a little more creative than that. Marylin Manson is a business man. He's not creative. He's not artistic. He IS intelligent at business. Jodorwsky on the other hand, has never sold out, and I guarantee you that he never will. God knows he doesn't have that many years left in him anyway.
