Will killing Osama Bin Laden make CAPTAIN AMERICA the film to beat this summer?
Hey folks, Harry here... It's movie night here at my house, which means I'm watching weird usually violent films. Tonight, I happened to be watching THE STONING OF SORAYA M. A brilliant film about the horrors of perverted fundamentalism gone wildly wrong. As the end credits were rolling, Diana's boyfriend texted her that "Osama Bin Laden killed by U.S.A. & Obama" - There goes the double feature - now it's watching, reading, learning what happened. Joking about pronouncing "AAAaaaaBBBBBott-a-bad" like Lou Costello... Thinking that this could help CAPTAIN AMERICA to be a enormous cultural milestone... and I do seriously think Captain America will be huge domestically. The flag waving I'm seeing, will only increase as we meet the HEROES that went on this mission. Their dramatic storytelling will get folks going for months. America's super soldiers did get the bad guy... Or will the real heroes eclipse the propagandistic fictional heroes? I'm betting on MARVEL on this.
Anyway - because this site is for a global community - I figured - I'd give you a spot to comment. I mean, this is essentially the thing we never did do to Hitler. He took his own life. We did get Osama Bin Laden, does that frighten readers around the world? Is this a big deal for those outside the U.S. - and if so how? What do you think of all this? It is a historic moment in history.

No, "Captain America" will definitely out-gross "Green Lantern"
by Toe Jam
If only because Captain America is a much more recognized character than Green Lantern. This is also why "Thor" will fail miserably, especially with "Fast Five" packing in the crowds.

Obama just won a second term. I'll go one further and predict that this event spurs the true American recovery.
-
Couldn't help myself. It can't hurt Cap's numbers.
-
"Nyeeeaaarrrrggggghhhhhh!!!"
-
Based on ads I'd say Thor and Captain America will out-gross it.

It has seen the death of Bin Laden, and will soon see the end of the terrorists

They're the real heroes.

Awesome moment for the U.S.A, and the rest of the world for that matter. A definite game-changer...

Thank you American forces, especially the Special Ops Personnel, for killing that fucking piece of shit monster responsible for murdering many many thousands of people (not just Americans !!) in multiple continents. Good fucking riddance for the planet Earth and if there is a G-d, and an afterlife, no doubt he is getting a serious "what for" for eternity !

I think the general public will realize that Captain America is just a 'comic book' movie, and Marvel will certainly not stoop to the shittiest depths of promoting CA w/bin Laden propaganda. Also, I think Captain America coming out in late July will diminish that patriotic swell. If Captain America came out next Friday instead of Thor? I think it'd be a whole other story. But as it is, I don't think this news will significantly impact Captain America box office either way (plus, our media is so shitty I'm confident there will be countless other hypes/controversies to fill people's minds).
-

But I don't think anything will make Captain the movie to beat.
by JuanSanchez
-
and if Captain America was released Friday instead of Thor, it would be #1 through Memorial Day. I don't think Cap's movie will be affected by what happened tonight. American pride won't improve the story, acting or special effects. Only the movie can do that. That being said, expect the ads to capitalize on American pride to get people in the theaters in this country. If the movie is that good, it will have legs, and that will determine how well it does overseas.

Captain America will be big because it looks to be a DAMN GOOD MOVIE

Finally something the President won't blame on his predecessor
by Frisco
This is great news. Congratulations to the people who found him, the people who killed him, and the leader who gave the go-ahead to take him dead or alive. Bin Laden may have been a figurehead lately, but his death at US hands is more than symbolic. Let's see if people will choose the strong horse over the dead horse. As for Captain America... I don't believe it will benefit or suffer from this news. For many people patriotism is uncouth, unthinkable to engage in and embarrassing to watch. This news won't get those people to watch a movie about Captain America.

The details are coming out now. He wasn't in a cave. He was in a stronghold. Whats most impressive it that it wasnt a bomb that took him down, it was a team of troops going in the hard way. I wish there was only one bad guy in the world. Unfornately that is not the case and here comes the retaliation. I hope we are ready.
-
So glad that Osama is dead, and it's about time! Yes, better do a double-tap on that bastard. Seems like an eternity in trying to capture or kill that guy. Have to say, I thought it might never happen. He seem so good at evading our turpo-lasers that we had to use small fighters to get him. This will be a day long remembered! It has seen the death of Osama Bin Laden and will soon see the end of the presidental race, before it even got started!
-
There's a fair chance his bodyguards had instructions to do the deed if OBL in danger of being taken alive. At least that was what some of his bodyguards who have been captured over the years have said. We'll see.

Can this finally put to rest the bullshit about how Democrats can't keep America safe?
by Drunken Irishman
Obama got this done after Bush said he wasn't worried about bin Laden. It was Obama's decision to send in the Navy Seals that took this action, it was Obama who told the CIA to make getting bin Laden their No. 1 priority and it was Obama who nurtured the Intel on bin Laden's whereabouts that made this possible. A Democrat has brought justice to one of the greatest villains the world has ever known. A Democrat has brought justice to a symbol of hatred and tyranny. A Democrat who was and is often derided as not believing in American exceptionalism has just shown brought us an example of it. This was no hamfisted operation like Bush was synonymous with - this was a surgical-like operation with few or none civilian casualties and NO loss of US life. Here's to you President Obama - you and the brave men and women of the Armed Forces did it.

Make no mistake, this is a battle won, not the war. Bin Laden will become a martyr, Al Qaeda will be determined to strike back and so the coming months are going to be vital when it comes to security. Then there's the body. The White House have said that the body is being treated with care according to Muslim tradition, which is the right thing to do. In that case the body should be buried tonight in Pakistan. That probably won't happen. If the body is returned to Saudi Arabia and there's an open funeral, that could be very risky. The way Al Qaeda is set up, there is no central leadership anymore. It's a franchise. Bin Laden's death may drain their spirits but it won't break them. I guess for Americans it's a relief to know he's finally dead though I think the over the top celebrations are not a good idea. It's the equivalent of people on the streets of Muslim countries burning the American flag. While most Muslims certainly didn't agree with his violent tactics there are many who felt an affinity for his ideology. I think the measured and somber tone of Obama's statement was perfect. The celebrations by people in New York and Washington, while understandable, may ultimately do more harm than good. Things are going to get worse before they get better. Bin Laden hasn't had any real control in years. Each cell operates independently and so from a strategic point of view, his death means nothing but when it comes to trying to defeat the organisation. What it will do is is make them want to hit back as soon as possible. Vigilance is key.

-
After 9/11, George Bush decided to focus on Iraq ... a place that had ZERO Al Queda presence before that day ... and a place where bin Laden was most definitely not located. George Bush let Osama bin Laden live for a decade after the 9/11 attacks. George Bush said bin Laden's death was not his priority. ----- President Obama, on the other hand, made it a clear goal to kill bin Laden. He pulled out of Iraq. He increased troop presence in Afghanistan. He told CIA to make it their top priority to get bin Laden. How can anyone claim Bush had any hand in this? BTW --- congrats to the SEALs, the greatest special forces troops in the world. And since this is an entertainment site, let's not forget who was the first SEAL in popular culture: Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV.

"Too bad Bush had more to do with it than Obama by sierratangofoxtrotuniform "But of course libs will pick and choose what they'll credit Obama for." If Bush gets credit for killing Obama then can Obama get credit for killing Sadaam Hussein? Doing so would make just as much sense.

Which is to say, nothing at all. We'll still be in Afghanistan 20 years from now trying to establish peach and democracy and fighting insurgents. This is a hollow victory at best, and a VERY nice feather for Obamas cap,but I seriously doubt this will change a goddamn thing. We'll still have no civil liberties. Guantanamo Bay will still be open for business. The rest of the world will still hate us and out economy will still be in the toilet. But the symbol of 9-11 is dead. Yay.
-
2012 baby!! 2012. p.s. any of you guys see the Dead Zone ep where Johnnie Smith went after Osama? Even he couldn't bloody find him!

Seriously? This article is so embarrassing. I don't even know how exactly to explain it why I think that. Who the HELL would consider how Captain America's box office will be effected by the death of Osama Bin Laden, something that is a MAJOR event in history. I hate to generalize (and that statement usually precedes a massive generalization), but it's an example of what pisses off people when they look at America. You ever think about what's might happen in Pakistan, to the MILLIONS of people there that may have to deal with the fallout from this thing that we here understandably believe is awesome? But wait, they're all terrorists, right? And how about this- why does Osama Bin Laden even exist? Remember the Soviet Union? So we've finally taken out this mass-murdering former ally, HOO RAH!? ...this is humanity we're talking about here. It's future is unfolding before eyes. The US spec ops have done a stand-up job and there is plenty to be proud of. But for fucks sake, Harry, CAPTAIN AMERICA?
-
We have been waiting for then Harry. What happened?
-
He's an old enemy of the U.S.-we just killed his son and grandsons. This time....its personal!!!!
-
Let this be a lesson for anyone that wants to target America. You can run. You can hide. What you WON'T do is rest easy. We're gonna find you. It might take a decade, it might take a week...your time is limited. And I fully understand and accept that any nation on this planet is going to get its hands dirty to further its ideological goals. I also happen to believe that the ideals of freedom of choice for all citizens is a goal worth striving towards. America is in no way perfect, but the core of its ideals is sound. And to all of those nations that have stood by us, through thick and thin.....a heart-felt THANK YOU.
-
Harry, I'd love to think you are right, but Captain America is not opening until July. Americans have such a short attention span that they will have forgotten all about OBL and the special forces team that got him by that time. I'm ashamed of the Americans celebrating in the streets of NY & DC tonight. Murder is never a cause for celebration. That said, I hope the families of those who lost loved ones on 9/11 now have some closure. Can we now get onto more important issues in America...like how we are $11 trillion in debt and have mortgaged our nation's future to the People's Replublic of China.
-
I'm a Kiwi and although it's breaking news here, as it is all over the world, I don't think it has as much impact anymore. The guy managed to outrun the US for 10 years. In that time terrorism has run riot all over the world. I get the feeling that although it is a massive statement that Bin Laden has gone bye byes, it won't stop terrorism, in fact, it could even fuel it further as this will surely escalate the hate that the taliban and/or Al Quada (spelt wrong?) has towards the US. Celebrate yes, as I'm aware of how big a deal this is for America, but perhaps be a bit cautious. The war on terror is far from over.
-
Actually, since the director has made it clear that his version Captain America should better be named “Captain Citizen of the World”, the news of OBL’s execution makes the movie even more irrelevant. The guy who is crying in his beer now is Superman, who just renounced his American citizenship.

Actually...it wasn't a Democrat or Republican who did this.
by RetroActive
It was a government issue Navy Seal, according to the reports. Just because the President nodded his head (whether it was Bush or Obama), doesn't mean they get the credit. I'd love to know who the real heros on the ground are. Actually, maybe they should remain anonymous. Since every freak who thinks Osama was a hero will probably go after them. Look, I'm proud it happened. I didn't care who eventually got the credit. I just wanted it done. And it's done. While I agree that the, "Democrats can't keep us as safe" arguments are silly...if people are going to vote in 2012 based on this, instead of the whole picture, they're idiots. But they still have the right to vote and I can at least respect the process. I'm just tired of the "my side gets all the credit". Under Bush, attention had already shifted to Afghanistan, including the troop surge. Obama, once he got in office, stuck with the game plan and added his two cents as well. They can both claim success together. Osama's dead. The End. Let's move on.

"They can both claim success together. Osama's dead. The End. Let's move on." Nope Obama can claim success as can the Navy seals who did the dirty work. Bush can claim Sadaam's head and nothing else. Bush has been out of office for 3 years and had nothing to do with this. He had 8 years to get Osama and failed. Now we can move on.
-
he continued the ground work that was laid after 9/11. The Patriot act is still in effect, we are still in Iraq, Guantanimo is still open, etc, etc, etc. Obama was smart to keep things going.

Yes Obama was a symbol and it was a great thing that he's dead, and I give credit to Obama's hand in this because he followed the same foundation that was set up right after 9/11. The Troops that did this are heroes without a doubt and this is cause for celebration. Problem is though is that another dirtbag will just pop up in his place. But having said that the only real way to keep us safe is to continue fighting as this nasty weed of terrorism and not let up, to keep building on the post 9/11 foundation and to "Never Forget".

appreciate crowds celebrating any death, this fucker took the cake and deserved much worse than he received. Even if he'd failed 9-11. History has seen a lot of blatant, pure hate. But none as blatant and pure as the hate that spews from the mouths of those who support extremist muslims. This is our day, and I'll be damned if I'm not going to celebrate.

He's fucking your virgins, bitch.

I understand where you are coming from. I do think that maybe there is difference between celebrating the killing and celebrating the fact that someone horrible is gone. There has to be a line there. However, I too sense that too many are indulging in visceral wankoff without really understanding why what happened is important. That's not really any different from what happens any day on the internet sadly.

As the song goes...."America, Fuck Yeah"!!!
-
He died not long after 9/11, kidney failure. It was even reported in some media circles at the time, but the idea of him still being alive is more valuable to the US in terms of propoganda and as a viable reason to continue occupancy. He WAS a CIA operative. This is clearly being reported to secure Obomination his second term and to drum up more patriotism. How anyone can be manipulated into thinking war is a positive engagement by ANYONE is beyond me. Soldiers are people's family members that are sacrificed for corporate profit. Wake up people

As good as this news is, I hope people remember that we weren't fighting one individual. Al Qaeda won't die now that Bin Laden is dead. The war doesn't just stop. In some ways, this will get worse now. Al Qaeda is like a hydra. Bin Laden is dead and someone else will take his place, and they WILL want revenge for this. America (and its allies) will want to up its threat level like crazy because there will be a response to this and, if America isn't ready, that response will be awful. Personally, I'm a bit scared about what might come next.
-
COMPLETE disconnect from reality. Of COURSE terrorism isn't going to stop. ahg! The assumptions people make blow my mind.

What are you f**king yapping about? So the UK had a royal wedding on the weekend - so what? Don't you think that the SAS and UK intelligence agencies have done their bit over the years to try and help hunt down Osama? What you should be asking is this: why was Osama living, unmolested, right next to a Pakistani military camp?
-
The support of the American People, not to mention the world. I've read some pessimists say "this changes nothing, someone will take his place" "terrorists will retaliate, it will get worse" etc... That might be so, but if a bomb goes off in a subway anytime soon you better believe USA & Friends will kick some fucking ass, and it will be justified and supported the world over. Let's not forget Europe and India have had their share of terrorism, and they want justice. Osama bin Laden and the failure to capture him represented the terrorists greatest strength: FEAR. Fear that the sonofabitch was alive, was never getting caught, and was gonna plan some shit at anytime anywhere. Nobody would admit it but for awhile Bin Laden won. The economy was fucked, everybody hated the USA and patriotism was on life support. Thats what the terrorists wanted and got, no matter their physical loses. Tonight was THE momentum shift. Patriotism has gotten a shot of adrenaline, and Americans are proud to claim their country again. Iraq is in the past. We our learning from our mistakes and have been rewarded that persistence with Bin Laden's head. I pray to God there's never another attack. That soldiers won't have to fight and civilians on both sides die. But should Al Qaeda be foolish to step foot on our soil again I'm confident America and our Allies, with the people as our backbone, will wipe every one of those jihadist bastards off the face of the earth.

I fucking wanted to see CAPTAIN AMERICA. Hell, MARVEL would do themselves a big fucking favor to roll out Cap NOW, not July. NOW! The film has got to be on the cusp of being done. If not, do what Bay and Co. did and hire more efx/cg visual artists and get the fucking thing done. With that bastard dead and the patriotic fervor sweeping this country, bring out Cap for the masses. As a DC fan, I want to cut Dan Didio's balls off right now for that bloody Superman story and Superman renouncing his fucking American citizenship. Yeah, I guess I'm caught up in the fervor too but shit. Bad fucking move DC. Bad fucking timing as usual. You guys are always getting your asses handed to you because of bad decisions. Well, history just proved you made the biggest misstep of all time with your biggest character. Siegel and Shuster must be rolling in their graves.
-
That's a verifiable fact. He got this ball rolling. Whereas Bush kind of threw up his hands and said "meh..." and let OBL cross into Pakistan unmolested. He then quickly turned his attention to Iraq, a country which was turned into an old west gold rush prospectors town by Dick Cheney and his cronies. Iraq is now a rich capitalist's wet dream. Obama shifted the focus to where it belonged. Afghanistan and OBL. True, these men and women served under both presidents most likely, and deserve our gratitude, but Obama got the ball rolling and pulled the trigger on this mission. Credit where credit is due, douchebags.
-
...he took out OBL, Gadaffi and Donald Trump in one day. Damn it he's good. This just won him the next election.

and we should get psyched to see Captain America? If Obama ate nothing but White Castle burgers would we then need to get psyched whenever they put something new on the menu? Benazir Bhutto confirmed to David Frost that Osama was killed in 2007
by kabookieslap
See the video here http://tinyurl.com/3mfcsax After this interview, she was killed. And now they are saying his body was buried at sea so they aren't even bringing a body back. So lets see what happened this week. He released a fake Birth certificate where they forgot to flatten the Photoshop layers and millions of Photoshop guys found it. His dad is listed as 25 on it when he was 27. It lists Kenya as his Dad's birthplace in 1961 when Kenya was not Kenya until 1963. in 1961 it was called British East Africa Protectorate. Every other Hawaiian Birth cert that has been issued a copy of from Hawaii looks completely different than his. The type is centered. And yes, it was a photoshop file where the text was resized and sharpened and not the green background. This is not what happens when you scan in a colored document on color settings, not even in OCR. And now, a few days later after that, Osama is killed, but hey, the body has already been buried at sea and we don't have to show proof. GREATEST SCAM EVER! If you people are buying this dog and pony show, then I feel sorry for ya

Add flour, sugar, salt and vegetable oil and stir to blend well. Finally, add baking powder and mix well using a large spoon. The batter's consistency should be like heavy whipping cream. 3. Rub pancakes with melted butter and serve immediately.

that was and remains british worse modern military blunder. the paras went in and shot dead 14 innocent civilians. this gave new life to the provisional ira who spent the next 35 years killing men. women and children as did the repugnant loyalist terrorists. but the provos killed more people. it took untill the 1990's for our troubles, our conflict in the north, europe's oldest and most intractable problem to end in that sham of deal signed by blair and ahern. to qoute the former leader of the ira, Gerry Adams, the dissidents, havent gone away you know. these groups are not and do not have the capability nor the support of the ira, but they still manage to kill police officers, army men, plant bombs and car bombs. and last week these thugs in military uniforms have threatened to kill queen. and police officers. terrorism doesnt stop. terrorists use history and warp it to suit their ends. al queada were created in the end of the cold war, the cia went in trained up some mujahadean figthers and abandoned them and one of those was osama bin laden. one more thing. gadaffi helped fund the ira and other terrorist groups. us should have taken him out a long time. ago. the provos used the british occupation to fund thier war. and that fat oafs on capital hill in the irish american loby supported all that. untill america was attacked on 9/11. one of the strongest supporters of the peace process was peter king. who lost his marbles and started attacking muslims.

I support and like this President, but they need to produce proof to the public that they really had possession of bin Laden's body and were able to positively ID him. It's just *too convenient* that his body had to be buried within 24 hours to "respect Islamic custom" (is this true about the religion -- for all Muslim sects)?

But watching Captain America as some kind of salute to the death of Osama Bin Laden?? That would be the action of a truly stupid person. I'll be watching because I like movies, nothing more nothing less.

americas economic decline stretches all the way back to the 1980s
by emeraldboy
to regan who brought into the whole idiotic notion of derivatives made the us banking system sound after regan, it was bush who turned greenspan. who believed everything he said. clinton did nothing to change the perception that the american economic was strong when it wasnt. then bush jnr, kept to that and so did obama. who not only kept to that but retain sommers and geitner. one woman saw all this happening, clinton gave brooksey bierne and office and staff, but because she knew all about the dangers of derivatives not only was she passed over for promotion by clinton who gave the ag's job to janet reno, but when bierne made this an issue, clinton administration cut her apart and dismantled her office and turfed her back into oblivion. she faxed a memo her white paper over to larry sommers. bierne's boss came into see a pallid brooksy bierne. bierne said that she had just received from a call from larry sommers who had 13 bankers in the room and they had read her white paper. sommers gave bierne a verbal bollocking over the phone. but worse was to follow to teach her a dont fuck with our economy lesson, she and her team dragged to capital hill where during senatorial committee, her office was systematically dismantled in front of her eyes and she was left with no alternative then to resign....

Those guys are choking on their own bile this morning. Conspiracy theories and "Obama didn't do shit" posts everywhere, very amusing. There's even people complaining about gas prices. Comedy gold, as always.

Specially if Al Qaeda decides to turn Bin Laden as a martyr figure, which they might just will. No, this is not over yet. This is not yet the end.

what i am interested in seeing is the opinion of the wounded soldiers.
by VonThunderballs
i want to see how they feel about this. i mean, after all, they were the ones who fought to find this guy. and now that they have him do they get to see their brothers and sisters come home? also, it makes me sick in a way that some americans are cheering with bloodlust that osama is done. are we that uncivilized? are we stooping to the level of other countries that exhibit so much hate?

Will killing Osama Bin Laden make CAPTAIN AMERICA the film to beat this summer?
by Muki
-
That ain't fucking cool news, Harry. Ok, we killed him, but now he will never answer for his crimes. What a hollow victory.
-
Good post my friend. I can only imagine the psychological impact that 9/11 will have had on Americans having lived in a Europe thats lived with terrorist atrocities and the impact of two world wars in the last century. So a sense of euphoria over this victory is something you are fully entitled to. Just need to be careful not to be over jubilant. My stomach normally turns when I see "idiotic" people screaming in the streets over their country or latest piece of flag burning and I was disappointed to see this happening in Amrica last night. America and to an extent the UK are seen as the Western bullyboys to a lot of the world. We won't win a lot of favour with the average thinking person if we are seen to be crowing like lunatics over the death of this twat of the first order. A dignified "well he's got his, anyone else want a go" is the way to go. Not this flag waving lunacy. Oh and Harry, its great to see whats important to you, you fuckwit.

Obama filed his tax returns using his Connecticut Issued Social Security number 042-68-4425, issued in CT in and around March 1977 to an elderly individual named John Paul Ludwig, who was born in 1890, who died in 1981. Mr Ludwigs death was either never reported to the SS administration or reported and deleted from the database by someone. Obama's maternal grandmother Madelyn Dunham, worked as a part-timer or volunteer in the Probate Office in the Honolulu Hawaii Courthouse. Thus she would have access to the estate files of anyone who died there. Thus if the elderly man originally from CT died intestate in Hawaii with no known relatives, Grandma Dunham would have known this person is a prime candidate to steal the SSN of since there would be no known surviving family worrying about the death benefit from SSN and that the benefit was not likely applied for and thus SSA did not know he died. the records indicate the number was issued between 1977 and 1979, yet Obama’s earliest employment reportedly was in 1975 at a Baskin-Robbins ice-cream shop in Oahu, Hawaii.

wounded, delimbed, suffering from post traumatic stress, they will end up on the scrap heap. where they will commit suicide or be forgotten about. they will not be entitled to anything and they will be ignored. there were brave irish men who went to fight in both world war one and world war two, some were celebrated as hero's but because it was seen that they fought along side the british, they were spat at, but they were ignored. but thankfully, the irish nation has erected a war memorial in island bridge and the queen will visit that she arrives. in a few weeks. and its not quite true to say that ireland was not involved in the second world war. england is our trading partner and brits builts sub marine bases of the coast of cork and elsewhere. and after the war, some german soldiers even became members of fianna fail.

It was a Democratic president, Barock Obama, who had Osama killed, not a Republican!
by Arafel
Let that statement sink in, you Rightwingers, Teabaggers, and Neo-con scum! You can't say that Barack Obama is a weak president now, because the Rightwing President Bushit had 7 years to kill Osama, and couldn't do it. President Obama did the job in two. Osama Bin Laden is dead, and it was under the order of President Obama.

"Dozens of people around the White House"... You'd think there was funeral going on there. No celebrating at ALL in their newsroom. Kinda hilarious in it's own way!

Killing Obama, I mean Osama in a Hollywood movie would probably sound more real than what they are showing today. More American war propaganda. 70 years and counting...
-
Harry, I have just realized that 'Movie Night' at Casa Knowles actually means 'Mexican Truffles Night' because you have got to be shrooming to make this connection man! That being said, it'll probably make Cap the Movie of Choice for that non-fanboy redneck demographic simply because it has the word America in the title. (Though I suspect that would apply regardless of OSL's take out.) The world's a better place without the deluded fucking sphincter though.

You know, I don't mean to go off on a rant here --BULLSHIT, YES I DO!!
by darthderp
You know, I don't get it. George Lucas announces he's tinkering with Star Wars and everyone's up in arms about it. Harry tries to link the success of a movie that he's admitted all but having a hard-on for about a superhero - whose glory days have gone the way of 8 tracks and Betamax - to this historic event. And other than a handful of replies, no one seems to care?!? Forget Harry's values; WHERE ARE YOURS, PEOPLE?? Look, I personally know people who have fought over there, and through God's Sweet Grace, they've come back safe, sound, and in one peace. So many haven't. To suggest or imply that a fucking movie would, could, and should take advantage of the patriotic fever that I'm sure this country is in now is at best crass, at worst, an insult to anyone who fought, bled, and died over there. You know what, fine. I'll be the Troll For The Day. I hope this movie tanks so hard that Uwe Boll says, "Damn, those numbers suck." I hope every project that Marvel has hinging on this sinks harder than the Titanic. And I hope Harry has the balls to come out - NOT IN A REPLY BUT IN A SEPARATE THREAD - and say, "You know what, I was talking out of my ass. I'm sorry." And if this gets me banned, so be it; it was nice talking to you all. God Bless America! THUS SPAKE MOVIENUT!!

Will killing Osama Bin Laden make THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE the film to beat this summer?
by Inexplicable_Nuclear_Balls
'Cause, ya know, it's about a guy like that and stuff.
-
He could have just been all, "we ain't gonna find him, just let it go." But he kept the operation active even when most other people would have felt it was fruitless.
-
"The question is, how will this affect film grosses?"
-
I could be wrong but haven't they been reporting on Osama Bin Laden having been killed at least 3 other times before now? For at least the last 5 years I've personally thought he was dead, and there hasn't been any news to counter that belief until now, so i guess i'm a little confused by whether this is real news or just a president trying to get his ratings improved. I don't think Osama Bin Laden has been a huge factor in all the issues going on with Al Qaeda within the last 5 years to my knowledge. On a side note of all the things harry could have started a talk back about concerning the "Death of Osama Bin Laden" it has to be about Captain America, How stupid can one person be. You want to start a talk back about Troops killing osama then make it about what's happened in the news, otherwise talk about the movie and not something news worthy.
-
So many harsh words here, go easy on the big guy. Harry! If I could muster just 1% of your movie enthusiasm I would be a happier guy! Love your outlook on (movie)life, keep it up! I think I'm learning tho, in my early days on AICN I was much more of a "hater", I think/hope your headgeekness is contagious.

...as long as they don't link this with their movie like Harry did. If they just promote their movie as the buildup to the Avengers brouhaha then okay, never mind. If, however, they do try to capitalize on it, then yes; fuck 'em.
-
I have no doubt that he was captured. But I do wonder if he was killed. If I was the President, I would want him alive for questioning first. Lock him up for a few months and drill him for all the info they can, and then execute him. I suspect this is what really happened. If he was still alive, and his people got wind of that, they would retaliate to try to get him back (which would of course fail, but innocents could still be injured). So it's safer for all to say he is dead. I could be wrong.. lol... but I wouldn't be surprised if this were the case.

And on AIC, that's saying a lot. This will not have any impact on Summer BO. None. I can't believe I have to write this sentence. What is wrong with you people? This will be forgotten in a week. Gas prices are going to have a far larger impact on the 2012 elections. This will have zero impact on the world situation. People of Islamic heritage will demand revenge. Guess what, they always demand revenge for something. There will be terrorists attacks. Guess what, there always are. Iran and others will continue to work frantically on getting N-weapons. Do you think they will work even harder now? The demographics that have made Islam such a potent force aren't going to change. And while demographics is not necessarily destiny, that is the way to bet. Bill and Ted and Barack's Bogus Libyan Adventure will increasingly dominate the nation's worries (see gas prices) -- as much as liberals (you know, those wonderful anti-war, strict constitutionalist types) want to ignore it.

here is something that we in ireland find utterly hilarious
by emeraldboy
the man who brought about the economic collapse of the country through his inflation of the bubble, bertie ahern is now giving economic advice to the nigerians. that is priceless. loyalists terrorists killed 30 people in one day in the dublin monaghan bombings and the british helped them. they blocked, thwarted and resisted every attempt to look into what happened. the baron inquiry was held in the 1990s and even then the british govt refused to give evidence. even with the omagh the worst atrocity in the history of the troubles there british govt would not give any compensation to the victims families. they had to fight for that and there were rumours at the time about why the security services failed to act to prevent a bomb like that from getting through. there is very little justice in these cases. how states failed to prevent atrocities such as 9/11 or omagh or anything else. nobody really tackles the root causes. before 9/11. the images that were beamed around the world was of a community in northern ireland where the police were escorting children to school while the parents were pouring bile down on the heads of the kids below. if you want to end conflict you have to take down things like peace walls. but nobody has or will....
-
Why are people giving the credit to whomsoever happens to be President? What's all this 'Obamaca' crap (and other catchphrases)?? Is America like Stalinist Russia, where you cling to someone's image like a God? Or is it just this website? As for the credit going to Obama for some reason, going by the BBC news the operation began SIX YEARS ago. I'm not picking sides, I just don't get all this 'good for you Obama' back patting. Maybe it's because I'm not American.

-
As nice as your enthusiasm is, people like that want, and need, their annonymity. Special Forces work best that way. Whenever ex-SAS members bring books out about their old lives, photographs obscure the faces of their old comrades, alive or dead. I'm sure that's the same in the States, and there's a good reason behind it. The last thing we want is for some nut-job to make reprisals against them --- or their famillies.

Good thing you weren't tasked with going after Bin Laden. BTW this is a moment for Americans. Fuck off.
-
Is dangerously close to seeing those idiotic muslims chanting 'God is great' after the two towers were hit.
-
but comparing bin laden to hitler is a teeny weeny bit overstated, don't you think? the one thing that seems to scare a lot of people is this "eye for an eye" attitude. americans celebrating the hunting down and murder of a man (even if al quaida commited mass murder - he was a single man, not the decentralised network he was a symbol for) feels weird here, where even death penalty is considered cruel and primitive. so do the reports of celebratory gunshots over texas - something one usually expects to hear from citizens of afghanistan or iraq. maybe the U.S.A. are not so different from their enemies after all. also, as much as we europeans like obama, it's not as if he went there himself and pulled the trigger. if you believe some conspiracy theories and the bush-administration didn't kill bin laden (but had the opportunity to) to keep the threat alive, then it's obama's success. otherwise he was just lucky.
-
To the TBers politicizing this thing...fuck off! Osama taking a bullet to the head transcends left and right politics. Bob Woodward, who wrote a couple books critical of the Bush administration, was on one of the morning shows saying W. deserves as much credit for this as Obama. Can't we all accept that people on both sides of the aisle deserve some accolades? The NY Times is reporting that the main intel on Osama's whereabouts came from a GITMO detainee. Thank God Obama kept the place open. Hopefully the bullshit "Guantanamo/advanced interrogation methods don't aid the war on terror" meme has been laid to rest.

Am I the only one who thinks Bin Laden will be laughing from the grave?
by SK229
I mean... it's tragic that innocent people lost their lives on 9/11, and I do think this provides a bit of closure to the loss those families obviously feel to this day. But after 9/11, this country truly went into the shitter, just like Osama wanted it to. I'd even go so far as to say perhaps those people DID die for nothing... or, at the very least, they died so we could inflate another housing bubble and use them as an excuse to expand the empire and spend our fucking selves into oblivion. If things keep going the way they're going with the empire building/defense contrator welfare, inflation, the debasing of the dollar, and the further shenanigans of investment behemoths like Goldman Sachs, I just don't see how we 'won' or America is still the greatest country in the world. If anything, I feel everyone in Washington, on both sides of the aisle, will see this as another spending mandate... they're all high and happy with themselves now and probably see this as making us invincible. But make no mistake, we are a hair away from insolvency or, at the very least, having to print so much money that a loaf of bread costs $20. So that means further erosion of the middle class and a lower class that either needs to be taken care of through social welfare or we'll be seeing what the French Revolution was like first-hand. I like Obama. I think he's an intelligent guy, but I don't think anyone, Republican or Democrat, truly grasps how perilous the financial situation in this country is or is willing to take the drastic steps necessary to right it. I think that if and when the shit really does hit the fan, it will happen almost overnight... another S&P credit rating hit... a pullback on labor and investments... then furiously printing the dollar to make good until it becomes all but worthless. If anyone can give me a good reason why this scenario will not play out, I implore you, give me some good news. As it stands, we're drowning in bullshit from the MSM. Did anyone see the White House Correspondants Dinner? Get the feeling many there are out of touch with the problems of average americans? How about the self-satisfied arm candy laughing and smacking each other like, "Oh, he did NOT say that" at everything Seth Myers said? I don't know... I think it's so bad and the situation is so serious, I just don't agree with even having such an event. These people clearly are not doing their jobs in reporting the way, say, Rolling Stone did with their Goldman Sachs article or the piece on McChrystal. You can totally forget reporting like that where it matters most - on the television and the radio. People don't like to read... so I guess it's as much our fault as theirs... but what the hell can we do about it now?

Had any relatives die needlessly for this false war on terror?
-
let's just torture a bunch of innocents and not-so-innocents over 10 years, circumvent the U.S. constitution and go to war just to kill one man. the sad thing is: bin laden reached his goal of seeding fear and mistrust among americans (or will the TSA stop harassing people, now that he's dead) and destabilizing some U.S. friendly regimes and now he's even allowed to die a martyr's death - instead of being captured.

Interesting talkback. Reading it is like being in a noisy bar. Bin Laden's dead and there's fat harry the barman musing on what it'll mean for the box office of a superhero movie. There's celebratory chanting from some. Arguing from others about the politics. Name calling and jingoism. And there, in the corner, is emeraldboy drinking his Guiness blindly blathering on to no one in particular about the IRA and some bloke from a chip shop. Wtf?

It will have fuck-all to do with Osama Bin Laden. It will be a hit because it has good characters and is a story well told. As for Osama's death, I think we can all let out a collective sigh of relief because I think it is now far less likely that we will have another attack against the U.S.

it was an appeasement document handed to sinn feinn and the loyalist. their foot soldiers emptied out of the maze prison. the war was over for adams and mcguinness and they became statesmen, travelling the world meeting people like bush and clinton. blair hollowed out the law for these former terrorists by declaring that under the terms of the agreement that anyone would be caught doing terrorist activities would be released under the early release scheme. so a man who was a provo and shot a killed another man in cold blood got a sentence of 20 years but under the terms of the good friday deal he will get 5 and be out in two. dissidents know this and they carry on killing policemen like ronan kerr. and making threats to the queen. the vast majority of irish people were revolted. the war of mcguinness and adams achieved nothing, except it brought death, mayhem and misery. the war of al queada will fail. war always fails and they peeter out.

I had friends who lived in the UAE at the time of 9/11, they were over there teaching English. When the future us look back, in 50 or 60 years and look upon the events since WWII, will they shake their heads? The exploitation of oil rich countries, the rising anger amongst their populations against their leaders and the multi-national corps and the governments that support them, should this desire to influence the destiny of foreign nations in the "national interest", this is our shame. We become no better than the slave traders, the empires of old europe around the world. As for the success of the US mission against terror? The legacy of Bin Laden? Just look at the america now compared to america of this date 10 years ago. Look how driven by xenophobia the fringes have become, look how the great free nation has become that which it used to hate, a repressive, quasi-police state. Watch all the movies and surf the net as much as you like, but you're only getting two presidential candidates and both are right wing, compared to international norms. Look at international attitudes to the us. Look at the attitude of the us to the internation court of human rights. An american soldier cannot be tried for war crimes, you have not signed up.... Yes, future people will feel nothing but shame for the violence and hardship we have brought upon ourselves here, in this very small world of ours. Too small, we have to get along with our neighbours, regardless of religion or political view. Not everyone wants to be america, nor europe, that system is tailored to a euro centric ideal of democracy, not everyone wants it, stop forcing it on others. Perhaps a tolerance and desire to build relationships instead of punishing possible rivals would mean brighter times in the future... Gods, I hope so.
-
..are you serious? And what should we "foreigners" be afraid of now, exactly? You are aware that not all of your "foreigner" readers are fundamentalists, are you? There are a lot of coutries outside the american continent. Look it up one day you feel like it... Oh, and Captain America is a superhero fantasy movie, there was never a Captain America or a supersoldier serum in the real world, ya know? This is my last post here. Not that I feel insulted in any way (LOL). I´ve just had it with your ignorant and badly written BS. Garth from Darkhorizons at least is an intelligent chap who knows how to write two sentences in a row without dumb drivel..

People of many nationalities died in the 9/11 attacks - this wasn't just an American tragedy, it was a world tragedy. There is a global moment of catharsis here, but also a tiny fear that the US will like the taste of blood a little too much.

they'll have to.<P> Strange that they didn't do that already, at least before they announced that they ditched the body. It does seem tailor made to appeal to the conspiracy nuts, which is a bit of a weird move.<P> What is fun is watching the conspiracy theorist's line change from 'bin laden died in Tora Bora and is being used as an excuse for war' to 'he's still alive and the US is lying!' Awesome.<P> We'll have photos by tonight, i'd imagine. But a round in the eye won't have been pretty so i'm expecting a mortician job a la Uday and Qusay..

I think what made the success of Iron Man (and $$-wise its sequel)
by openthepodbaydoorshal
besides the cocky appeal and charm of Downey, is that it was based in some form of actual reality. The Green Lantern? An interplanetary form of police with strange worlds and aliens? It'll take Ryan Reynolds to sell that to the audience, which I think he's capable, but its a tough sell. Captain America, like Iron Man, is at least based on reality, fantastical reality, but at least earth based reality.

My point remains, despite the spelling mistake. Of which: If you think Captain America would have any part in the Iraq invasion and killing Bin Laden as a response to claiming credit for 9/11 then you are a fucking idiot.

then I will consider it at worst complete bullshit and at best evidence that something very suspect went down. Not releasing evidence of this would be inexcusable. Even with photos there will always be theories and alternate explanations, so not releasing anything would just come across as very strange.

You've got to remember; victory or not, we're on HIGH ALERT now and we don't need to provoke any radicals out there any more than we have already. Those photos, the real ones, will come out in due time. From what I've read in the news, Islamic law mandates a swift preparation and burial. We, meaning whoever was handling this, weren't sure which country would want to claim Bin Ladin's remains, so we took a bit of the high road and saw to it ourselves with the at sea burial.

I'm portuguese. There were portuguese killed in the 9/11 attacks.
by AsimovLives
In fact, the 9/11 was the moment where most portuguese were killed by a single event since the end of our African Colonial War. So, yeah, the 9/11 was also a moment of tragedy and sadness for us, because it was such a dreadful event happening to an ally, but also because it hit us as well, fellow portuguese were killed. It's foolhardy to think this is the end of something. The cooler heads in here are saying it as it is: We just don't know what will happen next. And then there's the fact that images of shotgun celebrations all around USA, specially in the southern states, might just give the wrong image. Makes people in the world ask themselves, where the americans after Bin Laden for justice or for revenge? It makes for a big difference.

it was called the ghost of bin laden and it was all about bin laden was a tool of the cia. anyway the theory goes that as bin laden got more difficult to handel they cut him loose. but always kept him under observation. there is also speculation that the cia stepped to save his life. a number of years ago, sickly looking bin laden made a tape, he was apparently near death, his skin was yellow and jaundiced looking. rumours swirled around the place that bin laden was dying. being a tribes man he kept on the move, the american's knew two things that he was protected by a loyal band of mercenaries who had connections to gangesters in afganistan some of whom serve under hamid karzai and that the pakistanis knew where bin laden was. back to this documentary on it it was stated bin laden had died and was buried and that was over seen by a cia guy. who knew the area and bin laden well. one other story claims that bin laden needed urgent emergency surgery and was brought to at least one of two hospitals one was in pakistan and i think the other could have been saudi arabia and that he was given a new name. whilst in these hospitals. we will never know for sure. the cia's plan has been to scare the american people stupid. he was a ghost created by the bush administration to remind people of what evil looked like. the US do this from time to time. they erode someones backstory and say this country or this belief is so dangerous that it threatens the world. when actually it only threatens american interests. during the dying days of the blair/brown era, all you could her was the mantra we are fighting the wars of seas to keep the british streets safe and my reply. safe from what?

No, it may not be the end of anything. But it's a damn good start. BTW; before the talkback forum short circuited Friday afternoon, on Capone's Fast Five review, I mentioned about Joaquim De Almeda being in the film and you made a remark about him being the best Portuguese export since...something. Maybe a bit late for a response, but I respectfully disagree..that honor goes to my wife. :-)

'Glad to see that this site is as skeptical of patriotism in a moment like this with Obama in office as it would have been if Bush were in office. ;) Even as a registered Republican, though(albeit inactive at the moment because I won't vote for inexperienced obstructionists), I have to give Obama props. When the time came, he made the decision to kill Bin Laden, and that was the ONLY sensible thing to do. To "movienut401": I get your point about provoking radicals, but it's sort of moot because the fact that they are "radicals" usually means that they really don't need provoked most of the time to do something, well... "radical." If provocation means actually doing something meaningful - like this - then I hope there's more. That said, now that Osama is gone, I really don't think the military needs to be in Afghanistan. The Afghan leader that the USA essentially put into power has already threatened to invite the Taliban back if the US military stayed much longer, so what's the point? What can be accomplished? In conclusion, I've always been more of a DC guy than a Marvel one, but in this case, I hope the "Captain America" movie does VERY well, if only because it looks like a really good movie to begin with. Maybe Bin Laden's death will help it, maybe not. I tend to think audiences will separate the two. After all, Hollywood is so scared of actually showing pride in their country that the movie isn't even entitled "Captain America" overseas - just "The First Avenger." That's a bit like saying that James Bond and Sherlock Holmes aren't British so as to not offend non-Brits. Ridiculous.

People ned to get up to speed. The film is pretty much already a hit. It made $10m in 10 days in Australia, against Fast 5 which is a very popular sequel. It made $83m in the past few days despite Fast 5, Royal Wedding, Massive Football games and great weather. With the only competition Fast 5 and Thor have for a few eeks being each other, and both doing well despite appearig to be after the same audience, Thos is already a hit. More than that word of mouth on it is very high so it is likely to pick up a lot of cash next weekend from people who went to see Fast 5 and now want to se Thor. Whilst it may not be easy to predict how well it will open In America (anything higher than Incredible Hulk's opening will be seen as a success) I'd be surprised if it doesn't open pretty big.
-
Does nobody remember how reviled that film was? But September 11 happend and they couldn't make DVDs fast enough. There's no way it didn't get a boost, a tragic boost, from the whole 9/11 thing. I don't know if Cap will get one, with it being so far away, but there's plenty of jingoistic crap appearing all over Marvel and Captain America boards and Facebook. On another note, as much as people don't like Bin Laden (obviously he was a hero to many, but you know what I mean) but the fact that he was killed, on foreing soil, denied a trial and quickly (I know there's a religious reason for alacrity here) buried at sea will not sit well, IS NOT sitting well with many and may harm Captain America IFMarvel are seen tying theCaptain into American Foreign Policy. They don't in the comics; Steve Rogers has quit being Cap when various governments have forced their agenda on him, Aerican dream and AMerican ideals are his watchwords, not American Government or American politics / policies.

Maybe he's jealous that the SEALs were able to get Bin Laden with a precision strike, and the Mossad can't kill a Hamas operative without slaughtering a village of women and children along with him. Pathetic and pitiful. And you're not an American because (1) your loyalty is with Israel and not the United States and (2) you don't pay taxes like I do.

Just emeraldboy. Assuming he IS Irish, and not just a plastic paddy. Oh, and jorson28, you really think Obama gave an order to kill Bin Laden? These two fit in with my rather cynical view of the world:- Waziristan Mansion was what the locals apparently called the compound Bin Laden was in. Supposedly because they thought it was built by somebody from the remote mountainous area where, ahem, Bin Laden was supposed to be hiding. Intelligence services ? Fred,Thelma and the gang would have figured that one out. ! And its a mansion compound, quelle surprise. This spoilt little rich boy who asks people to die and kill for a grand cause, isn't caught hiding out in caves. He's caught in his mansion , preparing for his next blow job from his new young wife. Why people follow these two-faced, privileged, fuckwits is beyond me

Your tireless defense of Israel - even when nobody is attacking Israel - is proof enough, Shlomo. And you're not a tax dodger. I'm sure Sweden appreciates your tax contribution very much. Just don't pretend you're an American when filing your return. Do you deny that Osama was a CIA operative? Do you deny that the Bush family had and still has strong ties with the Bin Laden family? Do you deny that Bush administration officials (i.e. of the Neocon stripe) refused to take action even when warned of imminent danger of attack by hijackers? Do you also deny the Neocons had a plan in place to invade Iraq, and all that was needed was a Pearl Harbor-type incident to use as as catalyst? Yes, I was very much disappointed that Ahmadinejad met the protesters with a violent, brutal crackdown. How that has to do with "realizing you'd get killed in talkback" is a pretty laughable stretch of my views. But then again you're a desperate little fly trying to bring down the elephant, so you know all about laughable.

If Harry wants to ask a question/postulate over a film's marketability, even when it relates to a real life tragic event, then so what? If you don't like it, go somewhere else. Pretty simple IMO
-
By your logic I suppose that means your "tireless defense" of Iran means you're an Iranian. I hate to break it to you, but not everyone who supports Israel's right to exist is a Jew. Shocking, isn't it? <p> When I live and work in the U.S. I pay taxes just like every other American. You have some nerve calling into question the loyalties and citizenship of all expatriates or part-time expatriates. Then again, that's pretty much all you can bring to the table. <p> You have steadfastly called 9/11 an "inside job" and are also a documented birther and Holocaust revisionist -- in other words you're either a severely demented fruitcake or a most sinister individual indeed.
-
and you dont know me at all. I am actually very sane. most conspiracy theories are for the birds quite frankly. obama destroyed all the is osama dead nonsense by steathly tracking down and putting a bullet in his brain. what the us needs to know is to track down the us traitor who was head off osama media campaign. put him on trial and get all the info he has and then dismantle al queada once and for all. they next need to go after armin am zwhari. put him on trial and then boot his ass to alcatraz. they should seriously reconsider opening that prison. that is where you put the al queada leadership. but do it such a way that they hand over all the info they have and by the time its all over america will leave no in doubt about the real leaders of the world are.
-
Yaaaay! Now if only he had owned up to 911 and took credit for it instead of telling the reporters that it looked like an inside job to him. Fact is you can't find evidence of Osama owning up to 911. But you can find him saying he didn't do it. That alone is fucked. I'd be more inclined to believe the US if they weren't so fucking suspicious as fuck about every fucking single fucking little fucking mutherfucking tiny fucking detail. Like burning every video, computer/record of every air traffic controller on 911 because you have the sworn testimony from the controllers. Yeah you don't need that. Nothing can be gleaned from that info. Sorry folks but you are in the machine. Let's keep that machine chugging away

Harry, I like making this a place to discuss Bin Laden's death
by D.Vader
I should have clarified. But trying to tie this major event into whether or not this will make Captain America a blockbuster, or whether or not Captain America will overshadow the real heroes who got bin Laden (and you bet on Marvel?) feels to be in extremely poor taste.
-
The all-consuming beast that is the American war machine is still alive and well and ravaging the landscape of the world. How many innocent lives must be taken before we all realize where the real evil lies? Bin Laden's death was an orchestrated cover-up to divert attention from the controversy surrounding the legitimacy of Obama's birth, and you dumbshits ate it up and took to the streets bleating like the lambs that you are. The ruling elite loves watching your united celebrations, by the way. It just proves that nothing is easier to control than a herd animal.

... it's that if you don't have the supervillain's body, on ice preferably, he'll probably come back at some point in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if a few years from now the story gets retconned to explain that his corpse was picked up by a secret supervillain submarine and carefully revived (or failing that, cloned) and augmented with various extraterrestrial technology to make him more evil than ever.

Harry...Honestly curious about Diane's boyfriend's phrasing...
by ravenloff
"Osama Bin Laden killed by U.S.A. & Obama" Now, why in the world would his text seperate the two? Wouldn't it have been just as descriptive to say 'killed by U.S.A."? Is the boyfriend not a US citizen? Is he a supposedly objective journalist and thus tries to exist outside national lenses? Just curious, you understand, as quick phrasing on an excited text might just give a glimpse into the guy's worldview. Overthinking it, perhaps, but what else but overthinking goes on here at this website?
-
a few things to consider: Yes, Presidents have been caught lying in the past, but only because it was a desperate act of last resort or it was easy to conceal the true outcome of original claim(s). And yes, there has not been photos of the body released (yet)... However, consider this: There was no reason for Obama to go to the networks and make the statement he did on May 1. Furthermore, if the President is lying and then bin Laden were to surface and release a video with a current newspaper w/ date to prove he is alive, it would mean the end of the administration. No president would dare risk that. Also, it is very unlikely that the President would make such an unretractable declaration unless the White House, Pentagon, NSA and CIA were 100% sure they killed bin Laden. The White House always protects the President and would never want to leave the door open during the 2012 presidential election for a Tea Party or Republican rival to use the fact that the President lied to the American people on national television against him. Finally, there is a simple test for your conundrum: If bin Laden is alive and well, then he will eventually release a video to Al Jazeera or CNN or the BBC etc to counter the claims of the White House. If that video never arrives, then it is pretty safe to say that bin Laden was assassinated by US special forces - body or no body. Bin Laden has released videos in the past for much more trivial matters even merely to taunt western intelligence agencies. This does not require special mental gymnastics for you to figure this out... just some good old fashioned reason.

Question: Since 9/11 happened eight months into Bush's Presidency, does that mean that the events should be blamed on him or Clinton? What exactly was Bush 100% right about? The WMDs in Iraq? Afghanistan and OBL were afterthoughts to Bush... he used OBL as an excuse to invade Iraq and never did anything to get OBL. Obama was the one who actually put more pressure into Afghanistan, has overseen the capture of all these 9/11 dick bags like OBL, KSM, and all the others found in Pakistan, and yet, somehow, it was despite him. The policy of upping people in Afghanistan and bringing the fight to the border was OBAMA policy, and one that the Republican right has KILLED him for.

they staged managed those rallies and those vox pops were staged to. fox news will cheerlead this govt and support its decision to bomb pakistan, this is inevitable. anger will rise in america against american pakistanis and fox news will manipulate its news coverage to that end. fox news will edit its coverage to say to the pakistani's that they supported terrorism in the wake of 9/11. they looked the other way. fox news was in all likelyhood in the covert intelligence that lead to the death bin laden. so they prepared those rallies. just in case. there was nothing spontaneous about them. I may be against the death penalty. bin laden got what was coming to him. i am glad he was taken out. choppah, why do liberals feel the need to make things up about FoxNews?
by Coughlins Laws
He just made an incredibly stupid and convoluted statement about FoxNews and I called him on it. Conservatives don't go around making things up about MSNBC because they are blatantly ultra-liberal. Conservatives don't HAVE to make their bullshit up. However, when a liberal prattles on and on about some conspiracy where FoxNews supposedly bankrolled a rally, or whatever the fuck he said, it doesn't even make sense. Most of the college-age kids I saw in the videos I've seen from New York City were clearly Obama supporters and were probably anti-war protestors right up until Obama was elected. Now all of a sudden they're being manipulated into patriotism and supporting the President, all set up by Fox, when Fox supposedly hates the President? Huh? It doesn't make sense. When people make shit up out of thin air, they should be called on it, that's all...

the man got what he deserved....I loathe terrorism and there are people in this talkback who never grew up in ireland during the late 1970s and 1980's as I did. I am no liberal when it comes to terrorism. I saw those pictures on my tv from nothern ireland whilst living in the republic as a boy. I loathe terrorism but I understand what causes it. terrorists are incredibly stupid people. who have a warped view of history and injustice. you can be tough on terrorism with understanding the root causes of terrorism. the brits decieded to lock up all the republicans and loyalists. didnt change a damn thing. on the conflict went untill about 1988, when the talking started. the change brought about by the peace process was remarkable and belfast buzzed and is buzzing. but it didnt stop those who will happily kill police men etc and soldiers and they threathened the queen two weeks calling her a war criminal. nasty stuff. most conservatives will choke on their dinners at the idea of talking to terrorists they always. but one day it will happen. Northern Ireland goes to polls tomorrow. and outcome will be that a former terrorist will be the first minister. and the shinners will end up running northern ireland. thanks a bunch mister blair.

by AsimovLives
And like all rich boys, they only manange to fuck things ups and turn things worst then they already were. If you guys read the biography of Osama Bin Laden, what's suprising is in on so many levels it paralels the life of George Dumbya Bush.
-
A possibility I suppose. Saddam Hussein was known for using doubles. But they were used to conceal Saddam's movements, they were never used to replace him in the media because, from a distance, they looked relatively convincing, but up close it was apparent that they were just middle eastern chubby guys in uniform with a moustache that looked vaguely like Hussein. I think in bin Laden's case it is unlikely and the idea is a bit more at home in a James Bond, Mission Impossible or a Scooby Doo movie. Even if al-Qaeda could find someone to match bin Laden's facial features and body type, I doubt there are many who would volunteer for the job. Especially since it has been revealed that bin Laden was not "roughing it" with the rest of his troops in the AfPak frontier region, but was held up in Pakistani suburb. Remember, despite the amount of international attention the organization gets, al-Qaeda is a small radicalized group within the Muslim world consisting of radical Sunnis calling for global jihad. They are the rough equivalent of survivalist/paramilitary groups in the west; both groups get attention for dramatic and often violent public displays but neither represents the general views of their regional populations. They do differ in that western paramilitary groups do not have funding from millionaires like al-Qaeda did. Also, western countries have a well educated, highly literate and therefore highly critical population that includes a (relatively) free press making it hard for survivalist views to become widely supported. In contrast, much of the middle east has a relatively under educated and less literate population which opens the door for paranoia, misinformation and superstition in the general population. Anyway, the international press would leap at the chance to expose or debunk a bin Laden impostor by using something as simple as publicly available facial recognition software which is in use at airports, sports venues and other places large numbers of people gather. There will always be a minute segment of the population who would be fooled by a body double - like people who think that there were no moon landings - but this is the stuff of conspiracy theories. To be truly convincing, the impostor would not only have to be photographed, but he would also have to pontificate a bin-Laden-like Fatwā on video... that would be very hard to pull off convincingly. The odds are very low they could find someone who, not only looks like bin Laden, but also talked like bin Laden and shared his body language and finally, someone who believes in al-Qaeda's cause. (although if al-Qaeda were to clone bin Laden into a bin Laden Mini Me that would be awesome)! ;D So the test still stands: If a video is released of bin Laden speaking with a current newspaper, then we will know the White House lied. But if that video of bin Laden never comes, then it is safe to conclude he was killed by an American DEVGRU team in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

A great victory that won't help Obama in 2012 - "it's the economy, stupid"
by FeralAngel
A fresh new poll by Pew Research just came out, and while Obama got a boost on the fighting terrorism front, his ratings on the economy remain so low a minesweeper could miss 'em. "It's the economy, stupid" - one of the few truthful things Clinton's camp ever uttered. As for who can claim victory - in my view, both Bush and Obama can. Bush sent the troops to Afghanistan to hunt down Bin Laden. There, they encountered both foreseen and unforeseen difficulties, but persisted in their hunt. In 2008, Bush sent the Special Ops into Pakistan (which was a war crime, as far as the Huffington Post was concerned), to beef up the search. When Obama got elected, he talked big talk about pulling the troops out of Iraq and sending them to Afghanistan to find Bin Laden. But reality can be a bitch, especially to a newbie like Obama. When Petraeus turned Iraq around (thanks to the surge that Obama opposed), Obama sent him to Afghanistan to hopefully make more military magic. And as a result, Petraeus and the Special Ops have finally gotten their man. Obama had the sense to give the proper command when the opportunity to get that man arose (unlike Clinton, who passed on that opportunity 3 times prior to 9/11). So yeah, Obama said "Yes" instead of "No", so he gets kudos for that. But Bush deserves his due also, as I see it. And most of all, the military and the Special Ops get the most applause for persisting in spite of destructive partisan rhetoric at home and finally accomplishing their mission. AMERICA ROCKS. The end.

Right worried Israel will pay price for bin Laden killing By GIL HOFFMAN 05/02/2011 21:39 MK Eldad: No doubt Obama is greater threat to Israel than Osama was Talkbacks (1) MKs and officials on the Right expressed concern on Monday that Israel would end up paying the price for the American decision to assassinate al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. “Israel will need to take action to prevent Obama from appeasing the Muslim world at our expense,” National Union MK Aryeh Eldad said. “Bin Laden was never a direct threat to Israel. Ahmadinejad, Arafat and our other real enemies didn’t need bin Laden for inspiration. There is no doubt that Obama is a greater threat to Israel than Osama was.” Eldad predicted that the assassination would only boost Obama’s political support temporarily, and then his popularity would fall again due to the economy in the US, and other reasons. Deputy Negev and Galilee Development Minister Ayoub Kara (Likud) said “I am Israel’s sharpest critic of Obama, and I don’t want him to be in power, but I could tolerate Obama as long as he targets people like Osama. Obama in the past gave breathing space and support to the terrorists due to his naivete, but if he returns America to [former president George W.] Bush’s policies of fighting terror, I have no problem with him.” Likud MK Danny Dannon added that he hoped the American administration realized that the fight against terror was far from over. “I am worried about the festivities at Times Square and the White House, because we in Israel have learned the hard way that fighting terror requires a daily struggle and not just one knockout punch,” Dannon said. “The president should focus his energy on targeting terrorists who threaten the US and Israel – and not on an ill-fated attempt to implement an unrealistic Middle East peace plan based on wishful thinking.” ... Like Pakistan, it's baffling that we call Israel an "ally". That they would call Obama "a greater threat to Israel than Osama ever was" simply because he would put a stop to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan show how deranged these crazies are. Of course I don't lump the Israeli Left - those who actually petitioned for a Palestinian state and advocate for a peace deal - with them. But if Pakistan and Israel show anything, it's that our enemies are not necessarily those we're are hunting down, but to whom we are handing out billions of dollars in "aid" and protecting with the lives of our soldiers.

Having nuke sis not hard. The real bitch is to have a propultion system to carry them to a designated target. Be they bombers, submarines or most importantly, missiles. And it's in this where things get very difficult for countries which are not USA, Russia, UK, France, Japan, China or India. Only those have capacity to make missiles with nuclear bomb payloads capability. The rest has to buy them. and it's not easy. That's why no other countries except USA, Russia, UK and France have nukes.

"Obama is a greater threat to Israel than Osama was." “The president should focus his energy on targeting terrorists who threaten the US and Israel" Pretty much says it all about our "ally". THE NEOCON TIES TO RIGHT-WING ZIONISTS EXPLAINS WHY WE WENT TO IRAQ
by BSB
and only grudgingly later to Afghanistan. Permanent American occupation in Iraq was to provide a safe zone buffer between Israel and Iran, and keep Syria sandwiched and in check. The plot was to ensure that Israel's north was secured by American presence, where its eastern and western borders were controlled through puppet despots in Jordan and Egypt. Now, we see that plan crumbling to its core. You see, a nation that relies on war and aggression to ensure its continuity cannot possibly survive. Only through a peaceful negotiation can it stand a chance. Which is why the Israeli Left so adamantly support a unilateral declaration of statehood and intervention by the UN. It's because they correctly see their Rightwing brothers and sisters as the real danger to their nation's survival.

you said and i quote: "the conservative jews that so often govern the country are a bunch of lunatic motherfuckers. I have as much despise of them as i have for Al Qaeda muslin fanatics or american neo-con christian fundamentalists." so you equate and 'despise' lawfully elected albeit conservative Jews to fanatical muslims? you don't 'despise' the right wing governments of Saudi Arabia that stones women. To Pakistan - that stones women. Iran - that stones women. To Syria that kills it's own citizens by the busloads. To who the hell knows how many other right wing conservative Arab governments that pay for terrorists and that deny rights to its citizens and kill their women for having coffee in a public area with someone other than their husband, but you damn sure are quick to come to bsb's defense when he hates all Jews and you talk about some damn 'sack? yeah, right. i have never had anything to do or say to you because you hold no interest for me. you are a one note bore of the highest order, and more than likely are just a put-on anyway, because no one can be as asinine and monomaniacal for as long as you are without either a) be a total nutcase or b) being a total put on. so which is it? knowing you're history you will not answer a direct question so i expect no answer. but just realize that your own words damn you for what you are and what you believe try spreading some of the 'despise' around next time

Ask all the Jews worldwide who have bravely come to realise the way they act toward the Palestinians is inexcusable and causes the dangers they face. Meanwhile the US media always reports Israel as the poor victim (if they ever mention it at all) while it steals the last of the Palestinians land and resources and 99% of Americans have no idea that it is their govt's (military and economic) support of Israel that makes it 'hated' (not the people, the powers that be) by much of the world. That's why you were never allowed to hear Bin Laden's messages, because they drew attention to Israel. And as for this worrying that his death will make him a martyr or his grave would become a shrine - nothing like how the continuing situation in Israel or the continuing existence of Guantanamo Bay are agents of radicalism. Scream USA! USA! all you want, Bin Laden's not burning in Hell cos there's no such place. And if there is, you think God is going to think it was bad when he ordered the deaths of innocent civilians but it's fine when the US does it? Ha.

No. Don't even think you can get out of this that easily, cocksucker. Here's how it's going to be: <p> Since you threw out a blanket statement about Americans living abroad, the weight of proof is on YOU. You have drawn conclusions about my socio-cultural and/or religious/racial background based on one thing and one thing only. If there is any intellectual courage that can mustered at all from those shriveled little balls of yours, you'll list exactly what makes an expatriate American "loyal" and what makes him "disloyal". I'm sure a lot of the expatriate Americans on these boards would like to know what makes them traitors or not. You and I both know that it's a matter of ethnic profiling on your part based on bigoted conclusions. <p> Once you answer my question (which was put to you first) I'll answer yours. Now dance for us, bitch.

It takes the one strong point Republicans could always rely on away from them: strong on defense. Especially, given the current pathetic pool of candidates. "Oh, what did you ever do to defend the country, Huckabee? I caught Bin Laden!" As far as the economy goes, the Republicans were the ones who drove the economy into the ground. There was a surplus in the Federal Budget when Clinton left office. The only person I can see seriously competing with Obama when it comes to the economy is Romney and Romney is a serious flip flopper. He makes Kerry look lke a pair of Crocs in comparison. Plus, I find it difficult to imagine the Tea Baggers getting behind a Mormon, who was pro choice before he was against it and who created Obamacare in his state of Massachusetts before there even was an Obama. "Oh, and I got Osama Bin Laden. what did you do to protect the country, Mitt?!"
-
You wish. Since you're the one who brings up 'anti-semitism' even when Israel is not brought up at all, and from your perch in Sweden of all places, clearly you're the one who's in need of proving that you're even faintly 'American'. Dance? LOL. Nice try.

.. so the discussion about whether US support and cover for Israel is one of the main reasons for anti-American feeling is not moot now is it? And I'm not only interested in apportioning blame - if there was real pressure on Israel to come up with a FAIR deal with the Palestinians, it would lead to a much more peaceful world and only piss off those Israelis who insist in living in occupied territory just to fuck off the Palestinians they bulldozed the homes of, and the wacko fundamentalists who think Israel being 100% Jewish leads to the Rapture. I'm as sick of the Middle-East leading to so many problems as anyone, but the main solution is to fix Israel.

Jews are no better or worse. So it is no surprise that we have Jews who hate their race. but just because Jews may disagree with one another does not make them self hating. it is only when you despise your own race and give cover to those seeking to rewrite history- especially where it regards the Holocaust, that then, yes you are the self-hating type

Groups like Hamas (now part of a possible Palestinian unity overnment) reject Israel's existence in both pre and post 1967 gained areas. Will they disappear?
-
there can be no discussion with those who do not know history. people who display their lack of knowledge with their every word, and yes i am talking about you. when you learn the history of the founding of Israel of the wars it fought before and during it's re-birth, of being surrounded by enemies on all sides and left to fend for itself for decades before America ever gave open support. for the terms of the mandate that only allowed the formation based upon Israel being able to fight and defend itself because no help would be coming. to being a sovereign nation that has a right to exist and defend itself, that yes has made mistakes, serious mistakes, but at the very end can only ever rely on, and do everything in it's power to lawfully defend itself -as any nation should do, then maybe we can have a discussion. otherwise you simply betray your prejudices -go ahead and reread your last post - if you find nothing objectionable in it, then we have nothing to discuss
-
They get power from the grievances of Palestinians. Fix Israel and less dogmatic parties will be voted for. I don't know why Americans can't understand that if they were Palestinian they would vote for a party that opposed their oppressors - although I do understand that many Americans are fooled by the lies that Israel has 'bent over backwards' and the Palestinians are never satisfied.
-
If you guys don't prove that Zionism is a mental disorder, nothing will.
-
By "fixing" Israel, I assume that you mean to force it out of the post 1967 lands (including Jerusalem). Does it include the return of the 1948 refugees to Israel proper? Does Hezbollah in Lebanon which has thousands of missles pointed at Israeli cities figure into this at all? Will they "go away" just because Israel is no longer a presence in the West Bank and Gaza?

by Dead_Kate_Moss
Such as returning the occupied territories and a less 'apartheid-y' system. It's not for me to spell out the exact parameters, and the answer to all your questions is that it won't be easy but peace is possible, always. Maybe it's too late now, maybe they are destined to be bitter enemies for generations... no one can turn back the clock. But better to be on the side of making things better though, not supporting the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians.
-
Most sane Zionists probably wouldn't spend hours around the clock in the AICN talkback in the first place.
-
It really is not for any of us to work out the peace deal. It's up to the Israelis and Palestinians, to deal in good faith. Radical elements on both sides do everything they can to prevent that from happening. But since Israel is the dominant side, they bear the greater responsibility of making it happen. They are in the position - and have the moral duty - to give up what was taken. Yet each day they take more.

The evacuation of Israelis from Gaza didn't exactly make things more peaceful? It would be nice if the Syrian (and Iranian!) governments would be replaced. I think that Israelis would moderate their policies if these fviolent entities bent on their destruction would go away.
-
"It would be nice if the Syrian (and Iranian!) governments would be replaced." In line with Dead_Kate's argument, that could very well happen if Israel's government were replaced first. Committing democide against the Palestinians - and all the atrocities that entails - provides a crutch for those who oppose Israel's existence in principle. Treat the Palestinians as human beings, morally, and you take away that crutch. I am reminded of a quote by the lovely Christopher Hitchens, whose views on Israel I adhere very much to - and it goes a lil' sumpin' like this: "One of my first reservations about Zionism was and is that, semi-consciously at least, it grants the anti-semite's first premise about the abnormality of the Jew." He also said of the concept of Israel, "A Jew born in Brooklyn has the right to a state in Jerusalem, but why shouldn't a Palestinian born in Jerusalem have the right to his own state?" Indeed, it made me ponder the issue quite a lot.

Our president gave the final order. The final decision was left to him and he made the right one. I am elated to know that he did the right thing. But I am much more grateful for the efforts of my brothers who's boots were on the ground; now, before, and after. I'm late to this party, and as events have shaped up... It appears that this mission was a success DESPITE Obama's efforts, sadly. Not unlike the uptick in oil production for 2010, it was DESPITE his efforts. By now, you've heard how the intelligence was derived, so I will not bore you with more of that. GITMO remains open, rendition ends up to have worked, Secretary Gates remains part of it, and the low end of McChrystal's requested troop level was sufficient, proving that you can "go to war with the army you have" as Rumsfeld was criticized for saying. I fail to see how this spells Owebama's clinch for reelection. But I am a conservative. Of course I'd see it this way. Much of what our president campaigned against ended up playing part in what saw this victory thru. And the vigilant American people are watching and are wise to the admin's wiles. The liberals sickened with the whole 'mission accomplished' affair are now rejoicing not unlike the celebration in the streets of the Itamar Jewish Family. What happens once word gets out that Atty Gen. Eric "the ball" Holder has gone after the CIA agents responsible for furnishing the intelligence that led to OBL's demise over the last year? If you are a liberal reading this, have you considered this angle? What now? Just give up and hope it goes unnoticed like the KSM trial in NYC?

jaredp, what do you mean, "let him have this"? Are you really that partisan
by Coughlins Laws
that you want your guy in the WH to get all of the credit and not give any to everyone else who made it possible? Obama spent 4 years campaigning and being President saying that he was against the tactics Bush/Cheney used. He even tried to prosecute the very CIA Interrogators that got this information from the terrorists. Well, guess what, bin Laden would STILL be alive if not for the policies put in place by Bush and Cheney. If Obama had his way and the terrorists were arrested, Mirandized, and given lawyers, we NEVER would have gotten bin Laden. But, after years of hearing Lefties cry about getting water on Khalid Sheik Mohammed's head, it sure is funny to now see how happy you are and consider it a victory to put a bullet through the head of an unarmed Osama bin Laden...

Liberals really are dishonest hypocrites, pretty much 100% of the time any more. Anything your guy does is the right thing to do, isn't it? Just 2 years ago, every single Bush policy on terror was immoral and EVIL!!! Now, all of a sudden, it's OK to put a bullet through someones head without a trial. However, it's NOT OK to pour water on the guy who actually planned the 9/11 attacks. Just a question, do you think Osama would rather have been waterboarded or shot in the head? PS-The moral of the story is, you can't be "outraged" by something for the last 10 years, and then expect universal praise when you benefit from the programs you've been condemning. It doesn't work that way. If you are going to be consistent, then Obama is now a War Criminal, too. He invaded a sovereign country we are NOT at war with, murdered an uncharged, unarmed man, and did it unillaterally WITHOUT UN approval...

by Dirk_The_Amoeba
Obama has stayed true to what he said he would do. 9/11 happened eight months into Bush presidency. Osama was whacked two years plus into Obama's presidency. So does bush get blame for 9/11 and credit for osama's death, or is Bush absolved for 9/11 and gets credit for osama's death? or none of the above? Someone deserves credit. Someone who said they would pursue into Pakistan while others said it was too dangerous. Gee, i wonder who that was?

First of all, that was only Obama's position during the debates
by Coughlins Laws
Look up the things he's said while a Senator. Second of all, look what he tried to do with the guy who actually planned the 9/11 attacks. He tried to have him put on trial in New York City. Are you trying to tell me you don't remember the last 2 years of Obama's Presidency? You don't remember Obama and Holder wanting to prosecute the CIA Interrogators that got this information for us? You don't remember Holder wanting to prosecute the Navy Seals that captured an al Qaeda operative last year and gave him a fat lip? I'm looking at his actions. This information was given to him that they knew where Osama was for 16 hours before he made a decision. Bush waited 7 minutes after 9/11 and liberals freaked out. Obama, on the other hand, gave Osama 16 extra hours to change locations. The point is, the information that we got that lead us to bin Laden was gotten through waterboarding, Obama is against waterboarding, Therefore, if Obama got his way, we'd never know where Osama bin Laden was. This is 100% undisputed FACT!!!

coughlin - what is it, either Obama 'lied' and continued Bush policies, or he acted like a President and was pragmatic
by Dirk_The_Amoeba
You are twisting yourself in knots trying not to give Obama credit for doing exactly what he said he would do. Going into Pakistan to kill Bin laden when the Republican candidate said that would be too dangerous and reckless. I recall no trials or hearings. I recall talk of such, but there is talk about Bush being behind 9/11. Neither was so or happened. As for the 16 hours? Well that makes no sense, The intelligence came across his desk back in August, but it took this long to confirm it -and even then it was not a 100% confirmation. Huge debate within CIA if it should be done. Far too many memories of failed Carter admin plan in Iran. Obama displayed serious testicular fortitude in greenlighting this attack, as opposed to just bombing or worse, just walking away - like McCain would have done.

Well dingy dingy do! British TB'er 'Royalty' has graced us. Some (and they know who they are) are not worthy. I saw Toadkillerdog on here a few months ago and damn near died. But he did not stick around long enough to say hello.

Damn its like a reunion in here. Only politics and Coughlins Law could make it happen.

Waterboarding didn't give us any good info on Osama and Standard Interrorgation got us to Osama's Million dollar pad. <p> In reference to Bin Laden, your boy Bush said "I'm not concerned with him. He's marginalized and there's no need to go after him anymore, if he's even alive." during his 2006 press conference. Youtube is a bitch ain't it?? <p> There's more, but a quick google search exposes your bullshit is less than 60 seconds. (Type "Bush: Truly not concerned with Obama" in youtube search engine)<p> I'm not a fan of Obama's ass either, but he did his fucking thing while Bush was being str8 pussy!! <p> Give a black man his fucking props and tell your boy Bush to eat a dick!! <p> America - Fuck Yeah!!

Not Obama. Damn I took an "L" on that one.

Reading this malignant and repugnant thread has reminded me why I stopped coming here.
-
Listen, goatfucker. It's bad enough you pontificate about films- which only serves to illustrate both your crushing ignorance and astronomically overinflated sense of self-worth- but now to talk about any form of politics is really beyond the pale. You are an educationally subnormal psued, and if you spent less time attempting to insert your pointy fucking dome up the rectum of your favourite member of your woolly flock then you might, someday, be worth a fraction of the bandwidth you squander on cretinous and ill founded opinions. Jesus suffering fuck, I've not encountered such blithering stupidity and wilful ignorance in a fuck of a long time.

here is a question that bush refuses to answer let alone be asked?
by emeraldboy
hours after 9/11 bush ordered that all aeroplanes were to be grounded as all intel indicated that another attack was imminent. why was a plane carrying thirteen of bin ladens family members given clearance to travel?

Don't rip that scab open again. If I had to take a stab at this one, it's because the Saudi's spilled some money into Bush's bank account.

londonistan. radical islam was rife under bliars nose and he didnt do a damn thing about it. in fact after 7/7 blair courted muslim votes. channel 4 did a powerful documentary about how radical versions of the koran were being shipped in and out of the uk and under the uk authorities noses. that documentary was the subject of a botched police investigation and court action, which channel 4 won. that documentary featured an american born muslim cleric who preached hate against, jews, gays, women and called for england to become an islamic state amongst other things and for tony blair to excuted for war crimes.
-
Rubbish. I've lived here for ages, and the first time that term came up was after 7/7. Leaving aside the Labour Party's idiotic policies on mass immigration etc, this is scaremongering bollocks of the highest order.
-
Which government is easier to change, that of Israel or Syria and Iran? I guarantee that when Israelis see funding to Bin Laden admiring Hamas (soon to be part of a Palestinian unity government) and Hezbollah cut off by Syria and Iran they will be much more inclined to elect a more left-leaning government in their next democratic election.
-
None of which justify the bulldozing of Palestinian homes and the ongoing land grabs and dehumanizing treatment dished out daily to the people who were, you know, living right there before Israel was created. 'But what about Iran' = Non sequitur.

You either believe that God gave the land of Israel to the Jews or you do not
by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
And if you believe in "Holy Land" and that it belongs to the Jews because it belonged to them 1000s of years ago, then by that logic you should believe that we should give America back to the Native Americans.
-
Although certainly plausible, you can't guarantee that. Right-wingers would make the case that it was their being in charge that led to a change in Syria and Iran's governments - be it true or not. I frankly think that a freely elected government, and in this case Israel's, is the easier one to change.
-
"Land ..."

Oh, that's right, I forgot about Manifest Destiny
by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
God gave the European Christians the right to commit genocide on the Native Americans and steal their land. Silly me.
-
Depends which news source. There is plenty of coverage in UK: Guardian, Independent and to a lesser extent in the US: NY Times, Washington Post etc.
-
"I frankly think that a freely elected government, and in this case Israel's, is the easier one to change" Specifically, how?
-
And thus...?
-
That's a pretty self-evident statement. Syria is ruled by a dictator and Iran by a fraudulently elected President and Ayatollah. How, in contrast, is Israel's government more difficult to change?
-
Unfortunately, a lot of people don't see that as a bad thing.
-
Well, convince the Israeli voters.
-
Only slightly less of a dickhead than his foul brother.
-
How is it your business to effect regime change on a democratically elected government? And, brilliantly, the democratically elected government rather than the despotic tyranny is the one that you want to change because it's easier. Where the hell does this end?
-
They're about to convince themselves. This Arab Spring business is a game changer of epic proportions.
-
I have no particular axe to grind regarding Israel. However, to advocate regime change of the more moderate state on the grounds of ease is frankly ludicrous. Furthermore, how do you propose that this is achieved? Invasion? Because that's worked so well the last few times.
-
I think you misread me. Where did I say effect regime change? I'm basically saying Israel ought to elect a Left-leaning government rather than a Right (hence the change in government) in order to change its aggressive policies vis-a-vis the Palestinians.

by Lost Jarv
The fuck it is. Let's see how this plays out. My money is on "about as well as The Prague Spring did". Also, he may be eloquent, but that's neither here nor there. He's a psued, a fraud and a hypocritical self-serving dickhead. However, he's infinitely better than his Wormtongue-esque sibling.

Stupid AICN format.

What the Jews did to the Palestinians is very similar to what the European Christians did to the Native Americans. And both were done in the name of Divine Right.

I still disagree with Hitchens' position on the Iraq War
by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
And it is interesting that he took the pro-War position that he did given that Hitchens hates religious fundamentalism and Iraq under Saddam was one of the most secular countries in the Arab World.
-
And this Arab Spring business is playing out in hyperspeed. It seems like just yesterday that Mubarek was ousted. Today, Egypt is brokering the unity pact between Fatah and Hamas, and opening its borders to Gaza. The reliance that Israel has had on Mubarek maintaining control in that region is completely gone. Not to mention Egypt granting Iran access of warships through the Suez. And also not to mention the Muslim Brotherhood looking to gain significant power in Egypt's new government. Okay, I'm mentioning quite a lot. It's because the changes are swift and fairly radical. Which is why, in my opinion, Israel must alter its aggressive policies and pursue meaningful dialogue with the Palestinians in order to secure peace. I don't care if they have to work alongside people they find unsavory, at this point there is no alternative. Change has come to their doorstep and it's a veritable rhino.
-
of abu hamza and mohammad bakri both of whom recruited hunderds of young british muslims to bin ladens cause. abu hamza had a direct link to bin laden and was considered a threat but lived in the uk, in london on state welfare all the while he was rallying young muslims to bin ladens cause, the blair govt could have deported him at any time but for some reason did not. in the end they deported him back to jordan. oh and the term londonistan is from the security services. because people like abu hamza and bakri after recruiting young alienated muslims sent them to pakistan and afghanistan to train in training camps with al quaida operatives.
-
You first compared Jews to the Indians, and then to the colonial invaders. Try to keep your analogies consistent.
-
I don't think Hitchens took religion into account. I believe that he supported the removal of a despot on humanitarian grounds, much like what Obama is presumed to be doing in Libya.
-
Just below the main article, to help you view the whole talkback without clicking each post. I'm guessing that's what you're doing?
-
I did not compare Jews to Native Americans. I said that people who are supportive of Israel believe that the land belongs to the Jews because it did 1000s of years ago. By that logic, America should give the land back to the Native Americans. I don't believe that the Jews are entitled to that land. But, people that do certainly would not be supportive of giving America back to the natives and yet that in essence is what they are supporting in Israel.

BSB, the irony is that the American freeing of the Iraq from Saddam
by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
and all this democracy in the Arab World seems to be leading to more Muslim theocracies. And that doesn't bode well for Israel. I think that is what you're saying?
-
Pretty much. I think these countries have to be taken on a case by case basis though. In Egypt, Israel benefited from ties to their despots Mubarek and Suleiman. So a political transformation presents a clear challenge to Israel. Egypt could cripple Israel by raising natural gas prices to a prohibitive scale, or even cut off the supply entirely. They would have plenty of alternative customers. A regime change in Iran, in contrast I believe, would be beneficial to Israel. Firstly, it's already a theocracy and change would mean moving towards a more secular society. Geographically Iran is farther removed from Israel, and its populace is more concerned about economic improvement than jihad. But considering the iron hand that rules Persia, I don't see this happening.
-
Hamas is more than just 'unsavory'. They very clearly wish to see Israel eliminated. This is not a 'neocon' conceit; Obama and the Israeli Labor Party understand this as well.
-
I think you are looking at Hamas as a static entity, unable or unwilling to change. But this reconciliation with Fatah demonstrates that they are changing. There is an uprising in Syria and their reliance on Assad as a benefactor is shaky, to say the least. Again, owing to this Arab Spring effect. So they are moving towards a pact with Fatah at Egypt's urging. Do you disagree that, potentially, Fatah and Egypt can have a moderating effect on Hamas? That would be a good thing for Israel, right? But if Israel refuses to negotiate - meaningfully - with the Palestinians, then that will have the effect of giving Hamas the upperhand in that alliance.
-
Gets you clean as a Muslim!
-
It's a take on the Irish Spring slogan ...
-
Thats assuming Egypt itself stays moderate. Where that country will end up is anyone's guess right now.
-
Agreed. The future in this region is - and this is as under as a statement can get - completely unpredictable.
-
"Proof, please. " <p> Jesus Christ what an idiotic statement for anyone to make, even you, BSB. What -- if I don't give you my real name so you can check the records of where I lived at the time you'll call me a Zionist liar? Wow, talk about a watertight plan. <p> As for crushed, well, let's see.... <p> 1) being asked pointed questions and refusing to answer them. <p> 2) being called on obviously ethnic profiling statements and refusing to acknowledge it. <p> 3) being challenged to provide one single shred of evidence in the entire body of TB records which supports a single thing you've said about me, and failing to do so. <p> Yep, in any debate that would qualify as being crushed. <p> Here, on the other hand, is TB proof of among other things, your Holocaust revisionism: <p> www.aintitcool.com/node/48928

This Sefi cat must be reading our talkback, LOL. http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/opinion/israel-must-choose-between-peace-and-a-racist-state-1.359742 Israel must choose between peace and a racist state Netanyahu needs to face a simple, clear-cut question: Do you want a democratic state based on the 1967 borders, or not? By Sefi Rachlevsky The slogan that brought Benjamin Netanyahu to power was "making a secure peace." That is no accident. "Peace" has maintained the right-wing government to a much greater extent than the right-wing government has maintained peace. The reason for this is simple. When "peace" is at issue, the domestic debate is diverted to the image of the "other," the one with whom peace should or should not be made. From there, the road is short in Israel to governmental scorn for the weakness of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and for assertions, like those of Netanyahu, that Hamas is a continuation of the Nazis. But the cyclical Israeli calendar, which moves from "Holocaust" to "Independence," reminds us of what ought to have been self-evident. There is one question that must precede the question of "peace" - a question that constitutes the essence of independence and formed the basis of the Zionist revolution: What does Israel want? Not for nothing is that question ignored by the government. For when you ask what Israel wants, the requisite answer is clear: a state based on the borders in which it achieved independence, known today as the 1967 borders; a democratic state in which all are equal, as described in the Declaration of Independence. This answer is dangerous to the right, because most Israelis still support it and it is also accepted internationally. Moreover, it has potency in any situation, even when all eyes are made to look outward, on relations between Fatah and Hamas. If Defense Minister Ehud Barak is right that Hamas capitulated to Fatah, the way is open for a successful implementation of a two-state solution based on the 1967 lines. And if the opposite is true, an Israel that has chosen a democratic state in the 1967 borders has a wealth of available options that would enable it to look out for itself with widespread international support. But the question of what Israel wants has a second possible answer: Israel wants a racist messianic state, one in which Jews are citizens and non-Jews are subjects. This second answer is not fantastic. In essence, this has been the Israeli reality for 44 years already. In the territories, and also in Jerusalem, Jews are citizens and non-Jews aren't. Just this week, the science minister (! ) presented an award to Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu at a ceremony in which the latter advocated cleansing Safed of Arabs. Barak, an adherent of the method of verbal misdirection used to enable special-forces operations, dragged "the Third Way" out of storage to be the platform of his Atzmaut party. But Barak knows better than anyone that there is no third way. In special operations, in business and in policy alike, the decision is simple and clear: yes or no. Either Israel wants a state based on the promises of its Declaration of Independence, or it doesn't. To flee this simple truth, former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir (Likud ) invented what his staffers termed the "teaspoon" policy at the 1991 Madrid Conference: endless negotiating sessions at which mountains of sugar would be stirred into oceans of tea and coffee, but no agreement would ever be reached. Netanyahu has perfected this method, which enables him to keep stirring sugar into the negotiators' cups forever instead of answering the question of what Israel wants. But the time for teaspoons has ended. September 2011 is imminent. U.S. President Barack Obama, who came to power on the wings of domestic opposition to racism, has now just scored a victory over racism and messianism abroad. Regardless of whether or not he is personally a fan of Zionism, America's interests and international developments have granted him the ability to help distance Israel from racism and restore its independence. To do this, it is necessary to end the witch's brew of peace, teaspoons and ambiguity, and bring Netanyahu face to face, both at home and abroad, with this simple, clear-cut question: Do you want a democratic state based on the 1967 borders, or not? There is no other question. But the requisite answer is not a facile breath of air. It requires dismantling the settlements outside Israel's borders, bursting the racist-messianic bubble that is taking over Israel's educational and legal systems, and putting rabbis like Eliyahu on trial instead of granting them awards. Now is the time to answer that one question, the one that founded Israel 63 years ago: What does Israel want?

Just watch Obama's post Osama speech and compare it to Bush responding to questions about Bin Laden
by THAT_SAID_THE_CHOPPAH
Watch in amazement at Bush' complete lack of command of the English language. Hear him stutter as he admits that he has no idea where Osama is and how it is "a big area that he is hiding in." Then listen to him explain that he is not that concerned about Bin laden because he has been marginalized" and and literally "pushed to the margins." Yeah, Bush deserves the credit. STFU!
-
"What I have said is we're going encourage democracy in Pakistan, expand our non-military aid to Pakistan so that they have more of a stake in working with us, but insisting that they go after these militants. And if we have Osama bin Laden in our sights and the Pakistani government is unable or unwilling to take them out, then I think that we have to act, and we will take them out. We will kill bin Laden. We will crush al-Qaida. That has to be our biggest national security priority" Said during a 2008 presidential debate w McCain. If you were wondering why McCain and some other reps were kissing O's ass, now you know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om-0uFFqzdA&feature=player_embedded#at=149 The most relevant portion of this Obama/McCain debate video starts around 1:55.

Short of flying the chopper, Obama's prints are all over this. If it turned out to be a clusterfuck-sized disaster, the idiots on Fox and AM radio wouldnt be contorting history into a Bush friendly pretzel. "Failure is an orphan" yada yada. If gas comes down to 3.50 and unemployment is at 8 or so, then we are talking landslide in 2012. Big ifs, but he probably wins anyway given the competition. And the fact that Mitt Romney, a guy who's singular achievement to date is universal healthcare and who's a member of a church that other christians consider a cult, is the frontrunner right now doesnt hurt.
-
Osama has been dead for 9 years according to many foreign news sources. But don't let that stop you from running into the streets screaming "USA! USA!", celebrating death and destruction just like the stock footage of Palestinians after 9/11. This was the most ridiculous, dumbass, nothing article I have ever read. Ever.
-
... your post is the definition of "non sequitur". I was merely comparing Obama to the alternative on this specific issue. Im a supporter of a Palestinian state but Christian Amenpour was interviewing people in Gaza during those demonstrations. Not stock footage. Just humans being humans. Put down the Weekly World News and pick up the Economist my sad little friend.

If Osama was dead for 9 years....why wouldn't Bush have cashed in those chips?
by Bobo_Vision
Especially when his approval ratings were at their all time low? He could have taken credit and bolstered his supposed legacy. I guess the obvious answer is that he wanted to keep the lie going to keep the American war machine at work in Iraq and Afghanistan. If that's the case...then Obama still deserves credit for putting the brakes on the American war machine and therefore Bush still deserves NO credit.

In fact, he probably liked the idea that Osama was out there somewhere to scare the American people into doing whatever he wanted.
