The X-MEN: FIRST CLASS International trailer is superior to the domestic!

Published at:  Apr 28, 2011 3:11:45 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here...

This just became available for embed via YouTube...  but as I've been watching the trailer... and the new one that came out domestically yesterday - I began to think about everything we've heard about this latest X-MEN installment from Matthew Vaughn, with Bryan Singer as Producer - and if you think about what they've said they want to do from here on out...  it has me thinking.

The problem with the initial X-MEN franchise was that it started in the here and now, in a world that didn't seem to really be incredibly involved in mutant affairs yet.   But look at this trailer...

Here we have the Cuban Missile Crisis - and Mutants being thrust in the middle of it all.   When the Cuban Missile Crisis came about my great grandfather got a backhoe and in a matter of days constructed an underground bunker at his ranch that had it's own well water, food stocks for months and slept 22 (all the hands that worked on the ranch) - we all know or perhaps have heard of the stories about families doing various crazy things out of the fear of the Soviets.

Now imagine if suddenly - a new and very real SUPER POWER made itself known.  Watch this trailer.   We've got a Soviet armada and a U.S. armada out there.   A shit ton of missiles get fired - and we know Magneto is going to at least stop them...  but then there's that shot of a missile hitting a ship...   what if Magneto turns the missiles back and hits all the ships that sent them...  with a wave of his hand.   What if Kennedy reveals this to the world - what happens in history?

Now - Singer has said he wants the next film to take place in the 70's.   Then the next to take place in the 80's.

What if...  just what if...   they're creating a full fledged mutant film history.   Re-writing the way things go.   It is with this opportunity that you can actually build the larger fantasy universe of the Mutant story.   Does Nixon unleash the Sentinels?   Or will it be Ford or Carter?   Or will they save that for Reagan, who I absolutely could imagine building giant mutant hunting robots...  he did found our real STAR WARS initiative after all.

This film opens up the possibility of reforging the world we live in and with a series of films - realizing what we've kind of always wanted to see - which is that alternate timeline of history where mutants are a part of the equation.

That's genuinely exciting.   Dontcha think?

Anyway - here's the International Trailer...

Are you really that obtuse? I asked will it be Nixon, Ford, Carter or Reagan that unleashes the SENTINELS? And underlined Reagan because Ronald fully embraced science fiction tech while he was President. That's not even a political stance, that's fucking reality.

Nixon's paranoia could've unleashed them. Ford doesn't seem likely - and Carter couldn't make that kind of decision because he didn't have the balls to unleash the Sentinels.

If Mutant fear supplants Soviet & Commie fear throughout the sixties and going into the seventies - what happens? Does Vietnam happen? If nations begin stockpiling their own mutant powerhouses as a new weapons race...

Speculating about the future turn of events based upon a new injection in our past history... well it means politically our parties will have to react to a new threat. The Republican party has always been a very forceful and pro-actively defensive party when it comes to this sort of stuff so they feel like the natural reactionary domestic force for creating SENTINELS... which could very well have been greenlit for construction under LBJ - much like Vietnam.

    Fun stuff to play with

    by that_said_the_choppah

The way the right worships him and rewrites history in order to make it seem like he was a good president is ridiculous. I grew up in the 80s under that clown. If REagan didn't make a deal with the Iranian hijackers to screw Carter we would have solved our energy problems 30 years ago. But, instead REagan removed the solar panels from the roof of the white house and killed the electric car for his big oil masters. Stupid Basterd!

I love comics too, but some of you people don't a god damn thing about what makes a good movie. You are too busy holding up a comic and comparing it frame by frame to the movie.

The best comic adaptations have completely shut out the fucking fanboys, taken artistic license, and told a great story with heart using the comics as inspiration. I almost have MORE faith in adaptations that change things because that tells me they don't give a shit about the fanboys and their absurd nit picking, and just want to make a good movie.

Carter was way ahead of the game when it came to energy conservation and alternate energy sources. He put solar panels on the White House (which Reagan removed) and he took real efforts to reduce energy waste. Reagan threw all that out the window and set us on the path to oil dependence and the mess we're in now.

Its like the stuff God must dream about. we've had a Sam Raimi Spiderman trilogy,, and no mater how you feel about the third we still have it, forever to gaze on and study,, A RAIMI SPIDERMAN TRILOGY! If it Looks, talks and acts like shit then guess what - it's shit. And this is shit. It was shit in conception.

You have to wonder what it is these fags don't like about the X-Men.

I mean, if we started making "Potter" films without Potter or the rest of the fagworth gang, would people call it artistic vision? Or just wonder why the original stories was raped?

Having X-Men movies without the X-Men in them seems kind of pointless to me. Especially when you specifically rip off the "First Class" brand.

What are the odds this abortion will be half as entertaining as the "First Class" tales?

    Something less than fucking zero?

    1) French kissed a wookie

    3) Needs to stop eating out his mom's snatch

Either way....Brush your teeth, you sicko! You haven't seen pussy since you came out of one! Otherwise, you wouldn't have time to troll a web site daily under 10 different assumed names.

    Well I'm A Fanboy...

    by grimmjow jeagerjaques

And I not only think that trailer kicked copious amounts of ass, it officially put this movie on my must-see list. doc_martigan , I understand that you hate irrational fanboys, I hate them too. But right now you and your followers are overreacting as badly as they do. The best comic book movies "shut the fanboys out"? Yeah cuz fanboys really thought flicks like Iron Man 1, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Sin City were written for the Sex And The City movie crowd. Regardless of the liberties these films may have taken, none of them threw the baby out with the bath water as you'd like to think they did. They were just well made movies and comic fans and non-fans alike responded to them for that reason. Why shouldn't the fans want something that at least somewhat resembles the books they've spend years, sometimes decades reading?

As for this film, we're talking about a film that squashes the continuity of it's own series under it's boot. Not comic continuity per say, but it's OWN series' continuity. As far as I know this film is not a reboot of the movie X-verse. If it is, post a link where one of the higher ups working on the film states this and I'll gladly go along with it. Hell, I wish this film WAS a reboot considering how bad/boring most of the other X-films are. Please don't try to defend them because they "shut the fanboys out". At this point the only X-film that gets a pass from anyone is X2 (myself included). Now with this film, quite frankly it just seemed insane at first. Turing the flagship roster of Xavier's school on it's ear, the story itself. I thought it was a horrible idea. But because I (and apparently a lot of others given the responses these trailers have gotten) are actual well-balanced, objective people who don't get off sexually at the idea of a bad comics based movie, we changed came around to this movie. It looks like it's going to kick ass. I'm REALLY glad I was wrong about it looking like it'd suck. It takes more than simply "changing all the stupid comic-booky stuff" to make a good comic book based film. You have to take the material and make it work, which is what the good comics-based films did. Sometimes you get things pretty close to the source material (Sin City) sometimes you get things that basically become their own animals (Blade 1).

...but they'd only hunt commie-mutants. They'd be programmed to defend the United States and all of her citizens, homosapien and homosuperior.

Then in the 1990s when a squad of Sentinels had Omega Red in their crosshairs, Clinton would order them to stand down.

    They screwed up the canon...

    by jlt7970

Fox would've been better off rebooting the X-Men altogether. Now they've made a film that really doesn't fit into the timeline of the others all to well. There's a difference between creative license and just fucking shit up entirely.

I initially liked the previous X films & liked them less upon re-watching them; I think I was just so happy to see some if my favorite characters finally on film that I overlooked how flawed the movies were. Now here comes this new addition to the collective that, while it looks good, may screw up the narrative of the whole series. I'll still give it a chance but I'm wondering if the makers of these films really care about the true fans of the source material or just striking while the comic book movie iron is hot.

"Carter couldn't make that kind of decision because he didn't have the balls to unleash the Sentinels"

I could totally see him doing it. He gives them the nod. "But let's not go overboard," he says thoughtfully. "Make them all 3 feet tall. And instead of laser cannons, arms them with polite requests to not be mutated anymore."

So what you're throwing out there, which I agree with, is that this new rebooted X-men world will feel much more like Watchmen than Watchmen did? A world where its history is changed due to introduction of superhuman beings.

I hope so, and I think you're right. But I do think that FOX will stay away from using actual historical presidents from Kennedy on. Sure they will be based on the presidents, but not actually use the names or liknesses out of fear of a backlash ie ballslessness.

    by inception23code

Loved what you had to say Harry. Lets let go of timline and wrong characters for these moments of filming cause it was already fucked by Singer in the first place.
Lets for the time being create better movies with this world of singerverse and improve on the mistakes and learn from it and make better movies with even more implications and deeper meanings. Make great films. Not films with good intensions 123xmen
For the time being, I like, if this movie can live up to what the trailers are representing, like what the 70's and 80s movies can bring, especially if they have any vision of what you just said. Using real presidents as the cause of Sentinals and what not.
But again, why couldnt we do this with logan, cyc? Make these types of films? Oh well, this is how it is and this is what were all gonna have to watch cause we are not the ones making these films and not the ones with real power to change anything.
Untill one day, far away , We'll get a whole new vision
With lines like " We already arrrre" Im team Magneto right now. "The enemy is out there" "Peace was never an option" Damn it! i didnt want to be this excited to see this, watching the trailer 4 more times before i leave this site ;/

    I disagree Harry

    by vadakinx

I don't think there should be an alternate history and there should certainly be no Sentinels in the 70s or 80s.

I think the Sentinels should be brought in as part of the "not too distant future" section of the film franchise (or X4 if you prefer). Do a two part story set after X3 (which also serves to undo the damage of that particular film) where X4 involves Mr. Sinister developing the Legacy virus, a shock return of some dead X-Men and a hidden threat behind the scenes. Part 2 (X5) would see the threat revealed as Apocalypse and the film would begin thousands of years ago with the origin of Apocalypse in the middle east and follow his journey through time, his first encounter with Sinister and the beginnings of his plan to "cleanse" the world of the unworthy, mutants and humans alike.

With the Legacy virus unleashed, the mutant-human cooperation seen at the end of X3 would be abandoned as mutants are quarantined on Genosha island which is guarded by giant Sentinels. The Legacy virus would actually be the mutant cure from X3, a cure that turns out to be temporary and infects mutants. Apocalypse and Sinister develop a human strain and it's up to the X-Men and the Brotherhood to put their differences aside and escape Genosha to stop Apocalypse from bringing about the end of the human race (including mutants). A two-movie story that raises the stakes beyond mutants vs humans and the struggle for peace and delivers the kind of epic conclusion that X-Men deserves.

I say all this as a screenwriter more than a fan. I think the first class movies could be great for exploring the growing distrust and fear that surrounds mutants but since they're maintaining continuity (vaguely at least) with the original X-films, I think Sentinels etc should be part of a final chapter to the saga rather than a prequel.

Incidentally Harry, if you had any idea what I'd have in mind for Justice League your head would explode. A 3 hour Homeric epic with gods and aliens and the concept of fate vs random chance, free will vs destiny with epic battles and a logic in bringing the heroes together that actually works thanks to the genius of Jack Kirby. Unfortunately Geoff Johns won't return my calls, dammit! ha.

Not so sure setting the backdrop in different time periods is going to work. I think it will more appeal to those who appreciated Watchmen with it's connection to relevant historical occurrences, but the will be lost among the general movie audience who were too young to identify with the back drop of those periods.

I had enough sense in my brain to not waste my money on X-Men Origins: Wolverine, obviously based off what I saw in the trailers, commercials, etc. But I think I'm gonna give this movie a chance, and my money. Also, Park Chan-wook NEEDS to direct The Wolverine RIGHT NOW! And get rid of Huge Jackman. by moffatbabies

and Reagan, sir, was no cocksucker. I often imagine my wife still sucking cock and thinking how nice it must be for her now to be able keep a conversation going at the same time now. Ah, to be middle aged and in love again.

But I am convinced Reagan often created fudge bowel impactions with his infantile pork plug.

If twisters can't stop me, a bitchy black box who's having a bad day sure as fukk won't.

    Rebooting the franchise.

    by s30311

I think the studio is not going to make any announcement about rebooting the X-Men until First Class is released and they see if it is going to be a hit or not. If quite successful then they will talk about this being the perfect beginning of a reboot of the franchise. If it flops there be no mention of it and they will, I believe, move on with X-4.

I agree with you but lets get the Xmen movies done right , as in tone and deeper expression of whats wrong with our racial conflicts and look or even deeper, Magneto as a satan type and Charles as Micheal type aguring if God is right.

Now the costumes arent great in this but it looks alil better, not really. Like you said if we keep SingerVerse I think your story line would be great to see but if we dont get at least a few Great XMen movies out , Movies done with a real serious tone and directions Your Idea, if done (lol "if" not likely but you know what I mean)
They would fuck it up and put nsync jokes in them and keep them in leather black space suits where they barely move saying embarrassing things like " you know what happens when a frog gets hit by lightening, the same thing as everything else" God even typing that makes me feel so stupid.
But I feel if these movies are successfull , were gonna have to see part 3 done again and then that crazy 4 5 movie of Singerverse happen. But again, if these movies are done right, it will only lead in improving on the crap that was our X123 Imagine....... In a world where Xmen is done right, your idea, or story line would be epic

    X-men: first class

    by ryank

Although these characters are a Marvel property, the movie rights belong to FOX. It's been awhile, but I read an article that said Marvel studios was trying to get the rights back from Fox but had to wait until 2012. The only way the X-men films will be rebooted will be if and when Marvel studios gets the rights back. I would love to see Marvel get the rights back and actually make a decent X-men film.

This trailer does look good though. I will def see the movie because I'm a fan of the characters in any medium. Some these kids on here are pretty annoying and like to talk big but you know they are going to buy a ticket and see the film.

Lets pray Marvel can somehow get the rights back to the X-men franchise!!!!!!!!!!

This whole back tracking the story lines via the movie...

    by wacko3205

Is damned brilliant on the parts of Singer & Vaughn. To be honest...I was skeptical of it when they initially started it up because I figured that it'd be Cyclops & the gang...but this line up is the bomb. I've been reading X-Men since I was 9 years old but had quit for the past 4 years. I'm pushing the big foety now & just picked up the new incarnation of X-Force cause I dug Cable so much...I'd love to see him incorporated into the film set...& maybe they can bring some of the time slip scenarios into the mix now that things are getting back on track apparently. I'd also love to see em bring Nimrod into all this & Bishop too. Love the fact that they've got Banshee in the mix also. This looks like a geek-gasm in the worx.

It seems like no change at all...

    by tophat

...People keep talking about this as some kind of "revamp", and I don't see that at all; they've set it up so that this film can connect with the three previous films, and even the wolverine film. I know that there are characters that have already been used in those movies making the ages questionable, but, I don't see this as some sort of "game-changer".

I think Fox and Donner are obsessed with the character of Wolverine. They just don't want to restart the series all over because it'll mean starting over Wolverine. Their obsession with him is what's killing this franchise for me. Wolverine is the LEAST interesting character in movie form; you have characters who can control weather, teleport faster than the speed of light, control people's minds, have laser beams shoot off from their eyes ...but you make most of the movies about a six-foot-tall guy with knives coming out of his hands? And, what's worse is I believe they're doing this for money reasons NOT story: it has to be a lot cheaper to focus your movie on a guy with knives coming out of his hands than characters who can create a catergory five hurricane in a major city, or can destroy skyscrapers just by opening their eyes.

They seem to be doing the same in this one: of all the characters they can choose from, all the special powers, they choose Mystique, who's special effects look just as unimpressive to me as they did in the first X-MEN movie, Beast or a Beastlike character (i.e. guy in blue fur suit), a red nightcrawler (POOF! small thing of smoke and he's over there...), a girl with insect wings (wtf), a guy who has a beam coming out of his chest (...), and the girl who can ...turn into diamonds.

    Really?

A TRANSFORMERS movie gets all these great action sequences with huge special effects and the X-Men, the number one comic book in history ...gets budget conscious characters who can't show off their powers that much because it would detract from the fresh and original message of equality in the film.

If there ever was a franchise that needed an honest-to-God revamp, its the X-MEN.

But, that won't seem to happen until Jackman decides to stop playing Wolverine and/or Donner and Fox stop crushing on him.

I'm not trying to be a troll. Someone just stirring the pot, hoping to get reactions.

I'm a huge fan of the X-Men comics.

I want better films for them.

I want Spielberg late seventies early eighties, Cameron T-2, Summer of '82 X-Men movies.

    Not these.

    Don't you?

I'll see this because of Matthew Vaughn

    by bravogolfhotel

The conflation of various characters from distinct eras of the property makes me queasy in a fanboy way (Christ, is this how LOTR people felt about Tom Bombadil being left out of FOTR?), and Fox has made a lot of questionable decisions about this series already, but I've liked all of Vaughn's films so far, and he's passed up a chance at the X-Men once already, so maybe the lay of the land is more promising than it appears from my vantage.

    by s30311

I read and collected X-Men comics since there beginning they have always held a special place in my heart. I stopped reading them at the end of Joss Wheldon writing of one of the books. In terms of the X films "X-2 was the best but it would only rate about C+. I will admit that I'm really impressed with the trailers, especially the international trailers. I don't think it's possible to follow the comics to the tea. And, truth be told, the original team was not that interesting nor were there stories. The more I think about it I really do have high hopes for First Class. I think it might work.

    by tailhook

So is that why Matthew Vaughn is involved? Basically a reorgnizing of the franchise to follow the 'alternate history' motif of Watchmen? Just instead of people dressing up as superheroes, they mutantize and then dress up as superheroes and we follow historical events and how they're effected as a result of mutant involvement through the 60's, 70's, and 80's?

Wow... that would seriously suck. Talk about being completely unoriginal and derivitive.

I'm convinced those early promo shots and lame posters were flukes. I love the tone of this trailer, and I had a 'holy shit' moment with the stomping explosion at the end. I love that they're using Banshee like this. And I love the alternate history thing. I think this - is - original, not only because Watchmen (the film) only touched on this as a stylistic flourish and the history stuff didn't have any real weight in the film (it made for a great opening sequence, but it didn't feel like it mattered in the plot), but fuck, this is how the comics were, injecting mutants into real world events.
