I don't remember Harry and Voldemort jumping off a cliff in the book

Looks like the filmmakers having taken a lot of liberties with what happens which is no bad thing really. When I read the book I felt it had a lot of potential which hopefully they've managed to exploit in this movie. If nothing else, I hope they've made the final Harry/Voldemort duel better than the book where they just pointed their wands at each other and talked for half and hour.

Certain hookups should--and shouldn't have happened, IMO. Plus lots of characters were wastes and toss aside. Hopefully any HP reboot in the future would be animated instead. Truthfully the best way to do the series justice.

It's the exact same clip over and over. I believe they took it from his last scene in the graveyard in Goblet of Fire where he yells in anguish because Harry gets away. The only time I feel like it fit in part of this trailer was when Harry pulls him off the cliff... but by then it was distracting and getting on my nerves!

    Actually looks really good

    by Yan Dut

Of the Harry Potter movies, 1, 2, 6, 7.1 were utter crap in my opinion (4 out of 7). 3 was quite good (the time turning sequence is a whole lot of fun to watch), 4 was pretty nice too, 5 was OK and so much better than the long, slow, useless book it was adapted from - I was very surprised to have actually enjoyed it and had lots of hope for the next ones, considering had the movie had improved over the book hugely. 6 was a huge disappointment, especially after the promise shown by the previous movie: the book was one of the better in the series, but the movie was slow, dull, uselessly grim, and the emotional impact of the ending was completely lost on me (I wanted to be emotional, and I get emotional VERY easily at the movies, but not this one - just dull). 7.1 had some nice scenes (ministry of magic invasion - with the best acting by Harry/Hermione/Ron, simply because they were replaced then by adult actors - phew! :) ), but was absolutely dull (teenage angst, angst, angst) - but then so was the first half of the 7th book: utterly dull. So I have high hopes for 7.2, to bring at least 4 out of those 8 movies to some level of greatness - the material from the book is pretty good, we're over the awkward dull horribly acted and unrealistic teenage angst and into the action. And from that trailer it seems they've dared change things from the book, which can only be a good sign. I have very high hopes that at last, at last, a super awesome (The Dark Knight style of relentless excitement) Harry Potter movie could be out - after all the effort they put in the series, I think they deserve to get that one awesome movie, fittingly the last one... Disclaimer: the above are my opinions, feel free to disagree :)

Place you bets now on how long it takes Hollywood to Remake the series. After The Hobbit, they should redo LOTR as well. Why not, right? Both series will officially be done and the CGI will start to look dated. Might as well start pre-production on HP1 and Fellowship.

The movies were great up until Order....

    by performingmonkey

I think David Yates's direction is so boring. It's a real shame he ended up doing the last 4 movies (inc both parts Deathly Hallows). Prisoner of Azkaban will always be the best of the series because Alfonso Cuaron brought so much to it. It's visually the best movie, musically the best (though this was John Williams's last, and best, entry in the series, so they've had a disadvantage since then), performance-wise the best IMO. I'm sick of how much bullshit they talk about the kids' performances getting so much better later. Okay, Rupert Grint has grown into a far more accomplished actor, but if you look at Cuaron's film they all did exactly what was required of them, no taking it too seriously, they just acted end of story. Some of the best adult acting here too, particularly from David Thewlis as Lupin and it's Michael Gambon's first and best turn as Dumbledore. You FEEL you're within a magical world in Prisoner of Azkaban. It's got a great atmosphere to it. From Order to Hallows they have felt like just 'another entry' in the series, moving from one requisite scene to the next with no creativity. Yeah PLENTY of money thrown at it but do we give a shit about the characters?? Cuaron all the way. It's such a shame he couldn't come back for the final 2.

  • April 27, 2011, 8:25 p.m. CST

Also, both Sirius' and Dumbledore's movie death were shit

    by performingmonkey

Yates got it wrong on both counts. Dobby's death was much better, I must say.

Everything looks good, but I'm still really worried

    by D.Vader

Yates has cut so much stuff out in the past, I have no faith that he'll keep all the cool stuff from the battles in the book. Bah. I know I'm just gonna get burned again.

    by D.Vader

*MINOR SPOILERS* ... Multiple giants fighting in the last battle. That gives me some confidence. Also see the suits of armor marching. Better be some thestrals, house-elves, dementors, Buckbeak, and centaurs in there too.

  • Still a bullshit excuse in my book for cutting that out. A creative filmmaker can make it work and feel different.

This def will top the other HP's in Box Office. Fuck the 'Don't need in 3D' comments as they can see it in 2D anyway for less coin less complaints. Besides WB will make alot on the 3D Bluray and then converting the rest to fit into the Blu-Ray profit margin! The fanbase has though helped some studios rethink whether they should take time to convert or shoot in 3D which is a def bonus.

Like Agent Mulder's poster, "I want to believe..." But-

    by Kamaji

-so far, none of the movies has come close to just blowing me away. I appreciated what Cuaron did with 'Prisoner of Azkaban,' and part of me has a soft-spot for 'Goblet of Fire,' but everything else has been kind of...meh. I guess my criticism of the films is largely due to my disliking of 'Order of the Phoenix,' and 'Half-Blood Prince.' HBP is one of my top 3 of the series, and the film just felt so stiff in its execution. I really want part 2 to overwhelm me with emotion. Part 1 hit me a couple times, but I want to be taken in: I want to laugh out loud. I want to care when someone lives or dies. And one scene...I want to have the energy to make me burst into applause when one character says one line we never thought they would ever utter. I remember reading 'that line' at least 4 times and was surprised at it.

    by tiggr009

I think a little "less is more" was called for. I'd say Jackson did a better job with Sauron and he had bugger all to work with. That's just my opinion, of course, and it may differ from yours.

What is with the "ranking entries" backlash?

    by Ribbons

Are you too important to waste an extra ten minutes reading stuff like that but not important enough to spend two hours trolling a TalkBack? I don't get it. I think how people's opinions differ based on how much of the series they're exposed to is worth paying attention to, but whatever. As a sidenote to performingmonkey I'll say that Sirius' death in the movies is pretty much how it was in the books, which is to say abrupt and somewhat confusing. I thought it was handled fine. But Dumbledore did not get the exit he deserved, which was unfortunate. I think you're being a little hard on Yates when you say he has no creativity. For one thing the cinematography in Half-Blood Prince was better than any other film in the series, which obviously has a lot to do with Bruno Delbonnel and not necessarily as much to do with Yates, but since we're talking performances and scores and shit it seems like fair game. And the one single-shot of all the actors popping out of various nooks and crannies in the Weasley house shows more creativity than the entirety of Mike Newell's workmanlike Goblet of Fire. But I do agree that Cuaron elevated the series and has yet to be -- and probably won't be -- topped.

Sorry, Requiem for a Dream, you had a long time at the top of the trailer music charts, but I guess now you're old and busted. <p> The Voldeyodeling was funny--it was very noticeable even upon first viewing, so I'm surprised the folks who cut this trailer didn't tone it down. This trailer makes me happy

    by eveelcapitalist

My whole sad life has been leading towards this moment. *Cough* But seriously, I've got to applaud the dedication of the entire cast to this decade long project. I never expected the entire cast to stick around, save for Richard Harris who had to go and die and give Michael Gambon the opportunity to create a really awesome Dumbledore. But I digress. Cast stuck around through the whole series and I think that's admirable. Noone got big headed, Radcliffe didn't go on an ego trip running around saying the series wouldn't survive without him (though he did get his dick out for that shitty play about the horse fucker). Watson didn't become some attention whoring slut diva skank whore. The guy that plays Ron...well, no one cares and anyway he's too ugly to try shit. I've really got to say, these kids did pretty good. I've enjoyed watching the series evolve. From Chris Columbus mindless child film to Yates' mindless all ages/young adult melodrama. It's been so much fun to watch in that regard. And to do seven films in ten years...I'm impressed. That's something that's not easy to do in this day and age. Right, PETER JACKSON?!? Anyway, greatly looking forward to this final part. Unless my fat encrusted heart finally gives in and I collapse in a massive sweaty heap and die of a massive coronary while waiting in line at the theater, in which case I shall curse God and burn in hell for all eternity never to gaze upon what has probably been the best tentpole franchise movie series of the last ten years. Toodles, my fellow movie fans!

  • April 28, 2011, 3:14 a.m. CST

room23storeblogspotcom, I think that scene is brilliant

    by Mel

If you think about the movie....Voldemort has become mortal at that point. Harry isn't evil enough to be able to use any of the 3 unforgivable curses on him (as proven by his attack on Bellatrix at the end of OOTP). So in desperation, he grabs Voldemort and throws him off the side of the castle. Harry's wand just doesnt have the power to kill Voldemort. i think it's also the reason Voldemort approaches Harry rather than using his wand. Voldemort doesnt understand why his spells wont kill harry. So you've got 2 people who need to kill each other - but neither can use their wands effectively. So what can they do? So the film could be much more superior to the book in this regard, where in the book they just talked for 30 minutes and cast 1 spell at each other.

    by alan_poon

  • April 28, 2011, 3:56 a.m. CST

    yes alan_poon...according to Michael Gambon

    by Mel

He confirmed awhile back that he had to shoot a scene for DH part 2, so it must be in

  • have you read the books? I wonder which Dumbledore you feel is more like the "book version"....Richard Harris or Michael Gambon? I always felt like Richard Harris was more like the book version...but he wasn't written that way on film. It seemed like they wrote him as a much more feeble old man in the films and then made him a lot more energetic when Michael Gambon came aboard. In the books, I always go the impression that Dumbledore was like Yoda: old and feeble but could kick ass if he needed to.

  • The single biggest improvement was Slughorn's tampered memory. In the book, his memory still includes the word "Horcrux" but it does not in the movie. I never understood why they needed the memory if they already knew that Tom Riddle asked Slughorn about horcruxes. Just so that they could find out that he made 7 of them? I guess that's important, although even in the memory it's not confirmed that Riddle actually made 7. It's always been guesswork by Dumbledore I didn't mind the attack at the burrow as a way to remind people about Bellatrix and Greyback, but it didnt make a lot of sense. If Harry can be attacked there...why didnt Voldemort go? But all the movies have had ridiculous plot holes (Azkaban being the biggest when Harry is blatantly practicing underage magic at the start).

  • I know that he does it on DH part 1 during the chase scene at the start. is that the only time its actually happened and they just looped it over and over again in this trailer?

  • April 28, 2011, 4:48 a.m. CST

Its hard to allow myself some hope, ya know? I did that with Part I. After Order of the Phoenix, and after everything I heard about what was cut from Half-Blood Prince, I had no hope with that movie and nothing surprised me. As for DH Pt I, however, *everything* in the trailers looked just how I imagined it and I did allow myself some hope, but in the end, I got burned again with nonsensical plot points, other important cuts, and mysteries even the characters couldn't be bothered to address. I'm holding out a wee bit of hope for the final battle after seeing the giants and the armor, but again, I've been burned with the past 3 movies with Yates. I'm not a battered housewife, ya know =). Oh I'll still see the movie, but like with the last 3, I'll expect a few good things, but with an overwhelming amount of others that will just annoy me.

  • You mean like in A Serbian Film?

  • April 28, 2011, 7:12 a.m. CST

Voldemort's "NEEEEYAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!" was also used in Part V

    by D.Vader

I think THAT's the scream they loop. In Pt 4, Goblet of Fire, I think he's screaming "NOOOOOO!" when Harry disappears. The "NYYAAAAAAAAH!" however comes from Pt 5 during his battle with Dumbledore, the moment when he absorbs all the magic energy and lets it explode, shattering all the office windows, sending shards of glass falling everywhere.

I have really enjoyed the series for the most part, with the exception of the last two. They were DULL. And by the end I had zero emotional investment left for either film. You can say allllll you want about the last book being the "setup" for the final chapter, but in the end, it was DULL. I also say this, while I haven't read the books, if that CUNT Bellatrix doesn't die in a fucking HORRIFIC way in this film, I shall be pissed. She is a right cunt, and part of that is because Helena "I play the same crazy annoying bitch in every movie" Bonham is someone I fucking loathe. Other than that, the film looks pretty damn good.

    by D.Vader

He really did get screwed over in the past 3 movies.

    Out of all the NYYEAAAAAAAAAAAAHs...

    by D.Vader

I think the one where he falls off the edge with Harry is the most ridiculous.

  • April 28, 2011, 8:38 a.m. CST

I agree with you D.Vader; Rickman is one of those actors...

    by darthderp

that elevates anything he's in. Quigley Down Under, with Tom Selleck, is one example; GREAT movie if you've never seen it - Selleck is excellent in his part, and Rickman is awesome. Dogma, with Damon and Affleck? I still can't believe Kevin Smith got him to do that, but he's a riot in that one. One of my favorites, though, has to be Something the Lord Made; with top billing, he plays Alfred Blaylock (forgive me if the spelling is incorrect), one of the two pioneers of the artificial heart. They should have had Rickman play Zod in the new Superman movie; that would have shut up a whole lot of critics, me thinks...

  • April 28, 2011, 8:42 a.m. CST

Sorry; edit for my last post...

    by darthderp

Something the Lord Made had to do with modern heart surgery, not the artificial heart itself...needed to jog my memory there.

tigger_tales...that's what we call a truism...

    by darthderp

I remember from my high school days, a brief period of time on the debate team; one of the rules is that you cannot present a truism - a statement so obvious that it's not worth mentioning, and that cannot be debated. Saying that Alan Rickman's crown jewel is Hans Gruber is a truism. Which is my polite way of saying NO SHIT!!

    "Harry... Potter..."

    by buggerbugger

So fucking sick of Voldemort saying that fucking name in exactly the same fucking way every single fucking time. He sounds like he hasn't got the energy to finish a sentence, never mind wage some kind of all-out evil magic war, or whatever the fuck he's got planned. Either that, or he sounds like he's saying Harry's name wistfully, like he's imagining what it might be like to finally have dreamy, underage bumsex with him.

    Cliff Scene *SPOILER*

    by BlackBauer0320

From what I've read from screening reviews, that last duel between Harry and Voldemort will be quite different from the book and last about 15 minutes...the two of them will be frequently apparating to different locations to take each other on (Yates felt this would be more exciting and cinematic then having the two of them circle each other)...I would assume the jumping off of the cliff is in the midst of this, and their duel will end with the clip that has finished most of the trailers. I don't hate the change, but I still feel like it needs to end with the two of them surrounded by the survivors from either side. It just makes it more iconic - as if everyone recognizes that all of the fighting that's happened really comes down to what's happening right then. I've also heard that the Prince's Tale is beautifully played out over 6 minutes of the film, near the end. d.vader - spot on about the scene in which NYYEEEEEAAAAAAAARGH of the few scenes from that movie I actually enjoyed. I also found that I enjoyed Part I more than I expected. I guess at this point I've realized that I will never love any of the movies as a whole, so it comes down to the amount of scenes that I enjoy from each. And I think Part I has some of the best, most fully-realized scenes (the 7 Harrys/aerial battle, the Ministry/splinching scene, the Silver Doe, the Lovegood/Deathly Hallows story, the chase scene with the Snatchers, even Dobby's death).

I wasn't knocking the jumping off the building scene, just pointing out that was the scene that stood out to me as different. Actually now that I think of it it reminds me of how Jack killed off The Man in Black/Locke in the finale of Lost by making him mortal. I loved the ending of Lost so this should be awesome also.

    by HermesTrismestigus

When harry drags Voldemort off the cliff is not in the book but is awesome if its not a dream sequence. I hope they have figured away to explain the final duel visually..because I was the book its a freaking 10 minute monologue..with the Scooby Doo exposition that most of these movies have. Very excited even though I've hated the last 3.
