L.A. Readers! Join Mr. Beaks For A Screening Of Master Yuen Woo Ping's TRUE LEGEND On Monday, May 2nd!

Published at:  Apr 27, 2011 3:04:35 PM CDT

Beaks here...

The filmography of Master Yuen Woo Ping is basically a forty-year greatest hits of martial arts cinema. He directed two of Jackie Chan's early triumphs (DRUNKEN MASTER and SNAKE IN THE EAGLE'S SHADOW) and choreographed some of the most memorable action sequences of the last two decades in classics like ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA, FIST OF LEGEND, THE MATRIX, KILL BILL and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.

And now he's back with TRUE LEGEND, his first movie as a director in fifteen years!

I haven't seen the film yet, but I'm told it's packed with amazing fight scenes, and should absolutely be seen on the big screen with an audience full of rowdy martial arts fans. So I'd like to invite a bunch of you maniacs out to the Hollywood Arclight this Monday (May 2nd) for an advanced screening! Want in? Here's what you need to do:

1) Send an email with the subject "TRUE LEGEND L.A. Screening" to mrbeaks@aintitcool.com.

2) Include in the body of the email your name and the name of your guest (only one guest per person, please).

The screening will start at 7 PM. Please bring a photo ID for check-in. I'm going to overbook slightly, so plan on arriving at the theater by 6:30 PM. The guest list will be posted to the site on Sunday at 4 PM Pacific.

Good luck, and hope to see you there!

TRUE LEGEND opens theatrically on May 13th, 2011.

    Chia Hui Liu

    by colossalgoatfuck69

I haven't seen this so I don't know how long he's in the film, but I can't believe that Chia Hui Liu (Gordon Liu) doesn't have his name somewhere on the poster. This seems like it's trying for that old school Shaw Brothers-era martial arts feeling, & they have one of the biggest old school kung fu stars in the movie. I don't know why they wouldn't be capitalizing on that more. Gordon Liu was in some of the greatest martial arts movies of all time: The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Return to the 36th Chamber, 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, Challenge of the Masters. Not a lot of people talk about him when it comes to the all-time greats, but for me he's right up there with Bruce, Jackie & Jet.

    Old news...

    by bobby-stryker

This came out in Asia ages ago - had it on DVD now for nearly a year & it really isn't that good a movie. The fighting is reasonable but pales in comparison to the likes of Ip Man and the story starts interesting but instead of stopping at what feels like the natural conclusion - ends up going for round 2 which is a really unnecessary and almost completely unrelated third act. Quite a big disappointment unfortunately.
