Johnny Depp Will Return To 21 JUMP STREET!
Nordling here.
Sometimes you have to dance with the date that brought you, and though he's moved on to much greener pastures, Johnny Depp will indeed return to the film version of 21 JUMP STREET, the show where his career got its first big boost.
It's unclear what his cameo will entail in the action comedy, which stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Brie Larson, and Ice Cube, but according to Coming Soon it's confirmed. Jonah Hill said he thought the cameo was "really funny."
Some stars hold their early careers with disdain, so it's nice that Depp is doing this for the film. He was on the original show for four seasons, and it gave him enough visibility to get involved with Tim Burton, John Waters, and well, we all know how that turned out. Hopefully the film, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, will bring the action and the funny.
Nordling, out.

If he really wanted to do something cool, he'd reteam with John Waters

Damn, I'd look forward to some of that weirdness!

Depp probably figures no one's gonna watch this movie anyway.

Why even bother posting stories that we all read a day or two ago?

A vacuum of charisma if there ever was one. I would literally rather have Hayden Christensen.

Forget Tatum's casting; I can't wrap my head around Jonah Hill
by darthderp
I cannot picture him as a cop at all. Granted, the show was about high school undercover cops, so maybe that's the logic in his casting; who'd think of him as a cop?!? But still...eh...I just don't see it....

I HOPE HIS CHARACTER IS THE OWNER OF A CHAIN OF SUCCESSFUL BOWLING ALLEYS
by Meadowe
His character Tom Hanson really liked bowling, and toward the end Tom wanted to quit cuz he was tired of all the stress that came with being a cop. And I believe in the final year of Jump Street when Peter De Luise also wanted to quit he said he might join his friend who owned a bolwing alley, which is likely a nod to Johnny Depp's character. That would be cool that towards the end of the movie the cast kick it at a bowling alley and they run into not only Johnny, but also Hoffs, Penhall, Ioki, and maybe even both of their Captains (yeah I know the hippy captain died but this is freaqin j hill we're talkin about so he might as well put him in). I wonder if they're gonna redo the theme song also.

IT'S COOL TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LATE 80'S DEPP AND EARLY 2010'S DEPP
by Meadowe
I read once in an article that Johnny tried really hard to get off the show, dressing like Uncle Sam, complete with American flag inspired top and pants, yet talking with an Indian accent (curry-thick I believe the article described it). Holly Robinson had to pull him aside and tell him look I know you hate this show but I love it so chill tfo...and now he's more open to doing mainstream stuff prolly because of his kids (which were the primary reason he agreed to do potc). In an interview on s1 of 21 js the late great Stephen J. Cannell said that Johnny Depp approached him and told him pretty much he didn't like the show but would complete his contractual obligations, to which sjc didn't struggle much to keep him past s4 since he respected that jd came up to him about it. Anyway, like my previous post, it's cool to see that Johnny Depp went from saying in interviews that he would never want to have a drink with Tom Hanson and that the whole cops undercover in schools concept is a Marxist idea (or fascist I can't remember which) and now he's open to coming back. Then again, I haven't seen anything saying that Johnny Depp is coming back as Tom Hanson, so maybe I shouldn't be looking for that blue fastback mustang on youtube anytime soon (cuz even with his involvement I will not be seeing this).

It took it's sweet time, though.

Depp also did a cameo in the "final" Nightmare on Elm Street film FREDDY'S DEAD
by Margot Tenenbaum
I bet he'd do a John Waters film in a second if asked. If Waters ever makes another movie, that is. It's been nearly a decade. SIGH. I guess he made a lot of money off of HAIRSPRAY on Broadway. The question is CAN THEY GET GRIECO.
-
Why comedy? I loved 21 Jump St, and the spin off Booker too; but why make it an action comedy? It was action drama. Why not just stick with that?
-
At a con about a month ago backstage. I asked him about his 21 jumop street days and working with Depp...He said that Depp HATED 21 jump street. He said there would be no way in hell Depp would agree to be in the movie... Guess Depp was shown the right $$.

I know someone that was in one of Richard Greico's movies:
by Playkins
It was "If Looks Could Kill". She said he was a total ass and hit on anything wearing a skirt. Henceforth, I've never been able to take him seriously in anything, so I hope he doesn't drop into this either.
-
And Ice Direct-To-Video Cube? Jesus Christ. Is the comedy part of the movie how these guys pass for High Schoolers when clearly they're long past those days? Either way, since when was 21 Jump Street a comedy? Is this going to be like the Brady Bunch Movie where everything is tongue-in-cheek?
-

"In the winter of 1989 I was in Vancouver, British Columbia doing a television series. It was a very difficult situation: bound by a contract doing assembly line stuff that was, to me, borderline Fascist, (cops in school... Christ!)" -- Johnny Depp, from the foreword of Burton on Burton, September 1994
-
or Channing Tatum, whatever, the man's got two last names. The guy can't act. For shit. Some pple have issues with Sam Worthington. Others have issues with Paul Walker or Freddie Prinze Jr, but for the LOVE OF GOD, they at least have more than one facial expression and know how to raise their eyebrows when emoting.

Not a chance...unless Richard Grieco were involved...
-
will Peter Deluise and Dustin Nguyen also be making surprise cameos?
-
He hated being teeny-bopper idol. Worked hard to distance himself from that scene. Now that he has the larger, more diverse career that he wanted, it's good to see he's got a sense of humor about it. Hopefully it's a good cameo and not a complete throw-away.
-
somebody get in touch w/ Rufio!
-
This will be epicly bad, but I have no nostaligic affections for 21 Jump Street so who the fuck cares?
-
I really respect that he isn't above revisiting the old series that got him started now that he's a big high-falutin' star.
-
This story makes it sound like the production should be bowing before the great King Depp as he grants the peasants a fucking audience or something. Jeez.
-

Maybe they can cast Grieco as a washed up version of his Booker character... living on the street.
by EastcoastAvenger
Wouldn't give him any lines of course. He'd just be sitting there on the street and have Depp come by and have to walk over him. Ewww, that's mean... I loved Jump Street (and even it's 1 season spin-off) back in the day. There was an episode when the cast did a "what happened to them in the future" flash forward episode. If they are bringing some old characters in for brief cameos I hope will see them following the paths the old show set in motion for them.
-
I remember reading that he would've agreed to a cameo in New Nightmare but Wes Craven never thought to ask.

The 80's TV show movie remake that I would most like to see is

He recently confirmed that he WILL attend the Welcome Back Kotter reunion coming up on TV Land later this year. Thats a true mench right there. Ironically enough, Gabe Kaplan is NOT going to attend, which conjures thoughts of another well known yiddish term: schmuck.

and create a hilarious parody instead of working within the framework and doing something meaningful. Finding a balance between action and humor can work (Beverly Hills Cop). Not finding it, can produce Dukes of Hazard.

Well I don't know who the fuck Amy Goodman is, so it's new to me. Maybe Nordling has better things to do than scour the internet for useless shit all the freaking time. Yeah for you!!! Can anyone seriously tell me that this dumb movie would even have a cheetoh's chance at a blogger's convention if Johnny Depp were not attached to do a 10 second cameo in this stinker?
-
No Hoffs or Ioki listed... Are these characters not in the film? I think Depp should actually PLAY the first Captain who dies before Fuller took over... If Tatum is supposed to be Hanson; Depp can't play him in a Cameo....duh.

I was maybe 7 years old and when 21 Jump Street would come on TV I would be so bored. But I'd sit through it because afterward Gilligan's Island would start. TV was pretty much all I had as a kid until I discovered the wonders of my dick.

a cameo would be great if it were a better cast imo. who plays holly and ioki? the show wasn't bad about 80% of the eps were good, the depp and the few griecos. most solely ioki and holly eps were unwatchable. a-team was a better show.
-
granted he may have been attached to something else at the time, but he didn't do it. Dorff did. Depp said he'd do a cameo for 21 J st, he said Hanson would be a mess in the future, living alone in an empty apartment with a jar of mustard, convulsing or something like that. look it up.
-
Depp has repeatedly slammed 21 Jump Street over the years; he has nothing but disdain for it. If this were a real remake, and not a farce, he'd be long gone.
-
You keep paying $$ for new actors half-assing characters you liked when you were 14 in stories you've already seen for nostalgia...every 10 years. I'll watch it at 3am during half-attentive bouts of insomnia on TNT where the only payment I make is sitting through commercials for brand name detergent I don't buy. And when you wonder why your children and your grandchildren watch theatrical remakes of "OC" and "Vampire Diaries" for a single $75 experience...I will laugh and laugh.
-
...Depp is the only actor of note involved in this film... and his part is a cameo? What a dreadful cast.

one of the BIG reasons he came on in the FIRST place was to work with the actor who played Capt Jenco (who was killed off I want to say in the first 8 episodes). BEYOND that.. Depp didn't hate the show, per se.. but he HATED the fact that they sold it more like a TEEN show.. and that he was sold as some teen hearthrob idol.. Which is what alot of his craziness, during the show was about. Although.. since they've been talking about it for YEARS now.. Depp has NEVER been one to shy away about saying he'd LOVE to have a cameo.. I've been seeing comments on and off from him for years. One said, as a poster above said that Hanson would be a real mess.. wearing the aluminum tin foil hat to keep out alien invaders in his underwear. something INSANE like that.. I have my own thought.. IF they are going the whole comedic route.. why not have the NEW cops coming in.. and have them going around the school.. you pan to Depp and Deluise STILL trying to pull off the McQuaid Bros. 25 years later.. Dustin Ngyen trying to be an asian computer geek.. then Holly Robinson as a sub teacher maybe? THEN.. they turn to some scuzzy drug dealer type.. you can only see from the side, vaguely.. "Is he a cop too?" ... "Nah.. he just likes trying to bang High School girls.." and REVEAL Richard Greico! that would be.. quite a few of the BIGGER cast members.. Not sure if Micheal Benedetti? (sp), Steven Williams or Micheal Deluise could be fit in there somewhere..
-
It was awful. It did not hold up at all. There's a scene where Depp goes home all upset because botched his first assignment. The shot gets all soft as we head to montage land. This really cheesy, sad sack saxophone music starts playing on the soundtrack. The camera focuses.... On Depp, who's playing the cheesy sax music.
-
Maybe because not everyone has heard the news. So, for me, its not old news. Its the first time I'm hearing about it.
-
Ring, damn you. RING!
-
You sound like a real dick running to Nordling's rescue from negative comments. I'm pretty sure he's a big boy and can take criticism. And by the way, the poster was right: this is old news and not news that required "scouring the internet". Hell, it was even on my shitty little local market radio stations days ago. Dry those tears, Skippy.
-
playing Mr. Hand. Well, actually I'd prefer that it not be remade, but you know it will eventually. (for that matter, most 80's teen comedies were just pale Fast times imitations anyway).

HOPE STEVEN WILLIAMS AKA THE 2ND CAPTAIN IS IN THIS TOO...THEY JUST KILLED HIS ROLE RUFUS OFF SUPERNATURAL
by Meadowe
Although since the show is called, ahem, Supernatural, he may be back in some form, it was sad to see him go since he is a true vet of the biznassssss...always good in what I've seen him, though admittedly it's just been 21 Jump Street, X-files, and Supernatural....does he live in Canada?
-
Not true. There is an interview from the early 90s with John Ross asked if they ever did a 21 Jump Street movie in the future would he make an appearance, and he said sure. youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LG3S5I7vR1c To say he did it for the money is ridiculous. I'm pretty sure Depp has more than enough money.

I can't faul you if you prefer your girls to be more on the meaty side... but she's ugly? Ugly?? Get cured, boy! Ugly is the last thing one could use to describe Mme Paradis.

there were some truly AWFUL episodes of 21 jump Street... like the one about the crazy dateless girl trying to burn them all to death at prom? LOL.. the really bad Canadian exteriors trying to pass for anytown USA.. BUT.. season 1.. check out "Blindsided" with guest star Sherilyn Fenn in which Hanson (Depp) is asked to murder a girl's father.. FANTASTIC episode.. also I enjoyed "Gotta Finish the Riff" I believe it was called.. the first episode to feature Capt. Adam Fuller (Steven Williams).

Apparently not comfortably resulting in a great deal of anger that comes out in explosions of criticism or anything and everything. And when there is nothing within the content of the story to criticize, criticize the story itself.
