THE AVENGERS First Production Photo!

Published at:  Apr 26, 2011 1:55:15 PM CDT

Nordling here.

Don't get too excited, we don't see any of the actors in the photo, but you do get a nice look at what looks to be the headquarters, and an interesting looking logo on the wall.

We're not going to post on every nugget that comes from THE AVENGERS' production, but this picture's fun, and I'm sure as filming continues some pretty amazing pics will make it out.  For now - CHAIRS ASSEMBLE:

Thanks to SuperheroHypeNordling, out.

Edgar Wright is signed up to make an Ant Man movie for Marvel. I personally don't think he'll ever get around to it, but he made some kind of deal where they wouldn't use any of the Ant Man/Pym characters until his movie came out.

So that's why Ant Man/Giant Man/Wasp/etc. won't be in the first Avengers.

    by chewtoy

Edgar Wright doesn't have that kind of pull... Marvel will use the characters when they want to.

I would say that they won't be appearing in "The Avengers" as minor or cameo characters because they're the stars of their own potential franchise as Marvel sees it, and there's no reason to saddle that franchise with lead actors until they're actually ready to move forward with it. While Wright likely can't bar Marvel from using the characters, I'm sure all parties involved would rather he get to go through the entire process of casting the roles. Casting Thor and Captain America was a long process... casting Pym and Wasp would likely be as well.

Comic movies won't die for a while...

    by myphdisdoom

Why? Because they are tent pole movies. Studios are pulling away from original content. So when it comes to summer flicks there are animated films and comic book movies. Comic book movies hit all markets, kids, adults, women... The films can have love stories and great villains to epic story arcs. There is no reason at all for comic book movies to vanish.

Sure if Avengers fails, comic book movies with multiple heroes might die. But right now comic book movies are the main tent pole films. Only until video game adaptations are actually good could I see comic book films fade away.

    As a dude with a director's chair...

    by that_said_the_choppah

It really makes me laugh what it is you fucking morons think "directing" means. In an auteur-indy sense then yes, the director is totally in control and totally responsible for the entire film from script to screen.... but if you suppose that Joss Whedon has total control, much less final cut, over this puppy then, as I said, you don't know a fucking thing. This movie has been pre-vis'ed out the wazoo before Joss Whedon has ever touched a computer key or camera rig. Most of the designs are already done. Thor-check. Stark - check. Hulk - check. Cap, Fury, Widow, Hawkeye - check, check, double-check. Joss will be there to work with the actors to ground the emotional core of each scene, but the visual mis-en-scene and the final cut do not belong to him. Not by a long shot. (I'm pretty sure Marvel can afford a pretty decent dop and fx co-ordinator). It would be better if they did. Go read Astonishing X-Men if you want to get a taste of Joss's grasp on the comics medium. But foremost, the guy is not being thrown out into the film wilderness with creative carte-blanche and no support structure, and being told that the future of MARVEL rests in his hands. He's got some help, don't worry. Or keep bitching away, it's obvious you dumb bunts don't know much about film, so I don't think we're at any risk of this talkback bringing down the comic-film biz as we know it...

  • ... performing above expectation. It's been dead before and could be dead again.

    What killed it before?

    "Batman & Robin".

That was supposed to be THE biggest Batman movie EVER. Arnold Schwarzenneger as the villian (biggest action movie star ever), George Clooney as Batman (hottest rising star in Hollywood) along with Uma Thurman (a critical darling after Pulp Fiction). It had a MASSIVE advertising campaign, it had a HUGE budget... and it BOMBED.

These things always fail when they try to go too big.

The superhero genre has had a renaissance over the last ten or so years - and Marvel has been ruling the roost. And now, they are going for the fucking BIG TIME.

    Will it be good?

Or are they getting too greedy? It was greed that killed "Batman & Robin" and it could happen again, no matter what you have in your movie.

I'm not saying it's going to suck. I just think it would be advisable to approach this one with caution...

It's like Richard Marquand "directing" Return of the Jedi. All he was doing was telling the cameras when to roll and stop; everything else was already in place. Hell, he didn't even write the story.

As he himself once said, directing ROTJ, with Lucas on the set, "was like directing Hamlet with Shakespere in the room."

  • WB thought they had a simple formula for making a Batman film. Big stars overacting in rubber outfits, and make it all as over-the-top and campy as possible. They didn't feel it was necessary to have a decent script, or actual characters or anything like that... just make it a big, loud, colorful spectacle and people would show up in droves.

Turns out that people actually wanted the story and characters to be good. Who knew?

Say what you want about Marvel, I don't see much evidence that they're resting on their laurels or just trying to churn out the same thing over and over based on a simple formula. The people making the films actually seem to know what the appeal of their characters are, and they look to be taking their time to do them right.

Why not just have faith? Look at Marvel's track record so far. They haven't made a bad movie yet. Maybe some were not as good as they could have been, but nothing was outright terrible. Jon Favreau's biggest hit before Iron Man was Elf, so you can't always judge a director by their past work. All we can hope is that Whedon's love for comics and the medium will translate into a film that will set the bar high for any other comic movie after it.

It would only be a crime to the 10% of the (potential) audience members going to see the film. Most people don't know who they are, so really the general audience will be looking for the heroes that have already had their own movie- Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America. Believe me, I would love to hear a mention as well, but not if it's just thrown in for the fans. They deserve a proper introduction without cramming more characters into an already loaded-to-the-gills film.

    by 2soon2eat

Wow, it's so fascinating to find out all this inside knowledge about how films are really made! And from the genius IQs of Aintitnews, no less! I feel like someone is pulling back the proverbial curtain for me. Josh doesn't have total control over this film? Wow, that sounds so fucking crazy.

On the other hand, if you think Joss can't fuck this up because Marvel won't let him...um have you seen Iron Man 2? If Marvel and Joss don't play nice together the film will suffer as a result. Hows that for a little Hollywood secret knowledge?

Maybe Fury tells the others that there are others that have been contacted to join the team or maybe their names appear somewhere, in the same way that other X-men were shown on the computer screen in X2. Ant-man and Wasp were there from the beginning, they should get a nod. I seriously doubt that non comic book fans will be bothered by the mere mention of them.

I'm not so worried about non comic book fans being bothered by the mention of them as much as I'm worried about comic book fans complaining about how they only got a mention and should have been in the film...of course (some) comic book fans are gonna find something to complain either way, so I suppose there's just no pleasing everybody, haha.

chewtoy, greed and laziness go hand in hand...

    by chickenstu

Laziness follows greed just as sure as bacon follows eggs.

When these studio suits get greedy, they get lazy - cause they seem to think that they can make any old bullshit and people will STILL come to see it simply cause of the logos branded across it.

Surely you've seen this with Hollywood movies before?

Look at X-Men: The Last Stand for example. Out of all the directors they could've pursued for that, and they get Brett Fucking Ratner? Since Fox knew they had a surefire hit with that one, they just hired the first hack who came along... the result was a vaguely enjoyable super-hero B-movie, rather than the epic trilogy closer that X2 led us to expect...

Did they care? Did they fuck. And it still completely destroyed "Superman Returns" (which I think was a LOT better) at the box office.

    The Truth Behind X-3

    by phategod100

Singer was the 1st tapped to direct it, but Fox wanted to again give him a shitty budget and force feed him a script. When WB contacted him and Told him they'd give a $200 Million budget on Superman (a comic he actually liked) it was easy to see where he was going. Then they contacted Matthew Vaughn, were they (Fox-Tom Rothman) tried the same thing-Shitty budget, no script changes, and an Iron clad, production timeline, Vaughn told them to go to hell, Enter good ole Ratner, he was chosen for various reasons (quality not amongst them), he was good for bringing in films under budget and under schedule, thats the only thing Fox-Rothman cared about at that time. Its the main thingg Fox has been guilty of since they got the X-men and F4 licenses making a blockbuster style movie as cheap as humanly possible.

    by kiwicanuck

I'm more interested in seeing who else is going to be involved, how Hawkeye is being incorporated, whose name is being dropped or will pop up in on the action (Ant Man, Wasp?), and also, well, if Norton talked himself back into this thing. Or Ruffalo talked himself out of it.

Amazing the excitement this is generating with Iron Man being the only proven commodity and the only actor most people have seen in the role.

Yeah I'm skeptical too, but it has as much going for it as against

    by larry sellers

Whedon and Zak Penn are the weaker links. But RDJ has 3 years of superhero-ing on these other guys. Hemsworth and Evans look great. I still don't see Ruffalo as Banner. I think he's a great actor, but I don't see Norton's Banner translating to him very well. We'll see!

Just keep in mind that this ain't Whedon with a cheap TV budget. There were some episodes of Buffy and Dollhouse that had potential to be epically epic. And Serenity had a great balance of scale, character, action, and humor. Miles above Firefly.

It could go either way. Don't bother referencing the Batman & Robin disaster that "had everything going for it". It had nothing going for it. As a Batman fan back then, it looked like shit regardless of who was involved (but O'Donnell will always get a pass from me). As a Marvel fan now...they're weaving these stories together, knowing full well that audiences expect an epic unlike anything we've ever seen. This is NOTHING like Batman & Robin. If Avengers fails, it won't nearly as badly as that piece of shit did.

Always remember: we are getting some kick ass action pieces no matter what the rest of the movie turns out to be. And we can watch those scenes on YouTube for free for years to come.

    by miyamoto_musashi

If this movie was X-Men New Mutants, X-Men First Class, Iron Man, Cap , Thor etc then I think that would be a reasonable comment.
But lets be honest this is the most challenging comic book based movie brought to the big screen ever (yes Alan Moore more challenging than your so called unfilmable Watchmen), given audience knowledge, egos involved, characters from their own movies brought together, expectations, they aren't a team in a classic sense and more.
Only a JLA movie could compare.

Most likely I will watch it at the cinema but I don’t think I will be going to the premiere, will see how the early reviews are, Dark Knight Rises on the other hand, will be there as early as possible.

As I have said a few times I really want this to work, but as soon as it was announced the Whedon was directing, I was thinking either a) Marvel has massive Hulk sized balls, b) he is relatively affordable and Marvel thinks he has good geek credit, c) one of the key Marvel execs has a mistress who grew up watching Buffy or d) Marvel is secretly run by Herc

You comics nerds are overstating the magnitude of this project

    by winona_ryders_pussy_juice

oh but look there's cute little scenes at the end of all the movies tying them together. Big fucking deal. This movie is just an over-glorified X Men. Actually a case could be made that the X Men property is more popular than the Avengers. Iron Man was a mega hit but that was due to the quality of the film and actors involved, not the popularity of the Iron Man character. Wolverine is a bigger character in pop culture. Yes Iron Man will a stronger supporting cast, most notably the Hulk. It sounds like the Avengers will be more of a spectacle, for sure. I admit that Joss Weddon doesn't necessarily have the experience for a film of this magnitude, which will have a great deal of special effects. But aren't you the same nerds that decry all of the decisions Hollywood makes which are overly safe, devoid of creativity, and focused purely on economics? Going with Wheddon a little bit of a risk. Which is great. Marvel knows what it wants. An epic superhero extravaganza with the heart and soul of a Joss Wheddon production. Not a cold, soulless shit fest like Phantom Menace. More fucking power to them.

Bigger the risk the bigger the reward...

    by robertoinfinitethemoonlander

Although I don't see Whedon as a risk necessarily. I've yet to see any of his work to be honest other than the first few episode of Firefly, which I really couldn't get into.

What I have faith on, is the fact that this is Marvel STUDIOS. Yes, they are a film studio now but their roots are in the comic books themselves. They are protective of their brands and as such, we get movies that stay true to those roots.

They have the actors from the various stand-alone movies, they like the script that Whedon help write, and now they have him starting to film. I'm definitely excited about it!

Hopefully this is a HUGE hit and they can stop lowballing the talent on future productions... Having Ed Norton as the Hulk would've been dope!

    by oisin5199

Maybe because he was responsible for making the X-Men financially successful again when he did Astonishing X-Men. Maybe because he was involved in figuring out Civil War, the crossover event that also made Marvel lots of money (and the people at Marvel practically worship him for), that he has a huge fanbase and lots of cred among comic fans and geeks because he's proven he gets the superhero genre, maybe because he's great at writing ensemble genre pieces that are both funny and heartbreakingly poignant, that emphasize both the action and the characters? Maybe because he found a way to make a profit (and get an Emmy) by self-producing a freakin' superhero musical on the Internet? Maybe because he wrote and directed a space adventure that was a better film than any of the Star Wars prequels?

Maybe he inserts "lesbian storylines" into things because there are plenty of same sex relationships out there? I love that complaint. How many times has anyone complained that a writer has too many heterosexual scenes?

ps. sorry you completely missed the point of Dollhouse.

It seems to me, that you and I both enjoy science fiction and fantasy, probably the same things. I just don't see why you have to post this shit in almost every thread. If you were, indeed, older than I am, you maybe could act like a human and not a troll. I know that you are "known" here, but I've never seen you act like an ass about something like this.

No, I don't post all the time, but I do read a lot of articles on this site, and lurk through the talkbacks. For your information, so you can judge whether you want to continue to fuck with me or not, I'm 32 and I've been reading the site since 1996, if that means anything to you. You've really pissed me off, now. Maybe we should take this out of here.

  • The Avengers movie is not just a "movie"! Its a dream that comic book fans have had since the 1960's, and it's about to come true. So yes, the fact that they picked the worst possible person to direct The Avengers is a motherfucking problem for me! I'm not calming down until this movie comes out, and if Joss Whedon fucks it up then I will never calm down again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by christian_bale_trashed_my_lights

It's going to be a web comic drawn by Dustin, a twelve year old boy with Asperger Syndrome from New Jersey.

Dustin thinks girls are "odd" but he likes pretending that he's a starfish and thinks that gates which dial other worlds like modems are "kewl".

RDJ and Joss are going to be great together

    by jilliannesix

RDJ, despite some of the comments about his ego, *is* the star here. Hemsworth had a fantastic scene in one movie, but we've yet to see what he can really do. Evans is known for playing the hot comedic jerk, and Ruffalo has the personality of a grapefruit, which is great for Banner (not so much for Hulk). Renner has worked with Joss before, so he isn't an issue. SLJ and RDJ are the one's who are going to bring this movie in with Joss' trademark snark. His X-men run is fantastic, Buffy Season 8 started out great, but ended...oddly. Much like with Dollhouse, I'm hoping he is building up to something (which he always is) with Season 9. Even if it's not the Avengers movie you want it to be, it'll still be entertaining as hell and it's going to make a gazillion dollars. Trust this. Now, I'm not saying to lower your expectations, I'm saying Joss has a pretty good handle on whatever material he is working with.

But he may kill whoever embodies the comedic sidekick role in the ensemble by having them impaled 3/4th's the way through the movie. Yeah. That could totally happen.

possible plot (if it really is skrulls):

    by alan_grant_lives

Skrulls become aware of the hulk, they will taunt the fuck out of bruce banner to turn him into a WW Hulk like weapon against everyone! The skrulls will massively out number the superheros in casualties from all sides Hulk ends up directing his anger at... Loki will see an opportunity to align himself with the Skrulls and use his powers and cunning to disrupt the avengers even furthur than any intial forming-bonding-dysfunctional family bickering... out of which by the end they will find the courage/nice convenient excuse (human character flaws acknowledged there rather than lazy plot) to concede and throw their id differences along with their egos out the window with one another... Hawkeye realises it might do him well to join these avengers in order to save his own skin in the bigger pictue of things along with finding a humble purpose of saving everyone elses skin that he never had before... while being able to attend to his killing/snipering urges... Bruce will accept the danger and responsibility of being unnatended on his own and join the group against the previous experience of offical organised intervention only fucking it all up and making things worse...

    Throughout all this:

    a) Nick Fury will be like Gregory Peck from the Guns of Navarone but a more pissy and hardlined version to Caps Maverick from Top Gun, Iron Man & Fury & Cap will bitch back and forth with one another over the politics-morals-ethics of how to deal with this

    b) Thor and Hulk will dualistically find common ground and kinship over being effective God like forces of nature out of their element, while being the ones who will clash epically when Hulk Hulks out where Iron Man is preoccupied and Cap better served dealing with Skrulls

    c) Tonys arc will be stuggling over whether he finds Cap or Thor more annoying and utterly insufferable to deal with out Rhodey to calm him down by dry-manhandling him

    d) for some male-female romance-titilation Maria Hill will want to nail the shit out of Cap as will he probably also will but will pretend he's too Cap for that, Black Widow will want everyone to nail the shit out of her all at the same time, but Hawkeye will do will for flirtation and the like... this will be to keep bored people who don't like comic book movies but do love stuff like The Notebook happy along with fellow comic/geeks nerd adults at least who secretly dig those cheeky sex-smitten romp/human beats in their comic superhero ensembles but won't admit it

    e) there will be two cameos at the end, the

1st being Spiderman being approached and informed when hes grown up and ready they could use his help, also is he familiar by any chance with any other super scientist geniuses, who are maybe more grown up and don't currently have the barrier of getting completely shit on by life, and overly demanding/cockteasing/not-happy-with-constantly-absent-and-subsequently-vague-dishonest-boyfriend-material young women, and pretty much all of New York...

the 2nd will be Joss Whedon at the very end reading a copy of a book called 'Crisis Identity' with an emotional tear in his eye as Fury and Maria Hill walk of discussing Nietzsche and Philosophy arm in arm like old buddies... and err, Bob Dylan plays

Or something like that, i don't know... its The Avengers for Gods Sake people!...with out Ant Man and Janet... but still just be happy they're actually making the damn thing with a guy who is perfect for having all these Characters interacting and their dynamics paying off... more information is bound to come soon...

You can't have an almost unwatchable first season of a TV show and then promise to cut production costs so you can get another season. A movie has to work the first time.

Joss Whedon can't handle this, it will be known as one of the biggest mistakes in movie-directing history, people at Marvel will ask themselves this question over and over again when they see the first cut of THE AVENGERS and they realize they have to fire Whedon, hire another director, and put up another $100 million just to try and fix the piece of shit he directed so that maybe they can just break even when it is released: Why in the fuck did we hire Joss Whedon to direct the biggest movie of all time???

Dr. Who breaks BBC America ratings record! Suck it, Diox!

    by that_said_the_choppah

"Doctor Who" is continuing its inevitable takeover of America. The premiere of the sixth season of the rebooted, legendary British sci-fi franchise drew BBC America's highest-ever ratings for a telecast when it aired on Saturday. 1.3 million people tuned in to see the return of the Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory and River Song. (As you might have surmised, some HuffPost Media editors are also big "Doctor Who" fans.) That's 71,000 more than the channel's previous record--which was also a "Who" episode.

  • Thanks for falling into the cliche of the Whedon-hater talkbacker, who's probably never seen any of his work consistently. Look: funny dialogue! Lesbians! I'm surprised you didn't mention killing off a character.

I think each of his shows (with the possible exception of Angel) had maybe one minor same-sex element in it, amongst all the other crazy amount of hetero stuff. Buffy was the only thing that sustained any kind of same sex relationship. While shows like Ally McBeal and other crap used to hype the hell out of a lesbian kiss, Whedon buried his in the decidedly unsexy episode The Body, where the characters were in shock and mourning. And that's after almost a full season and a half of them exploring their relationship. My point is that usually Whedon defied typical expectations of television and audience-pandering crap. I can tell you, he'd never have Wonder Woman dancing to 'All the Single Ladies' (and yes, I'm still looking at you, David Kelley).

If you watched any of his stuff at all, you'd know that not only does Whedon avoid the cliche shit you're talking about, but usually is quite aware of it and if anything, would parody it.

Even though Whedon can compromise when he needs to, as he did on Dollhouse, he's not known for caving to studio demands. When he doesn't think he can do something that fits his vision, he takes his ball and goes home. That's what happened with the Buffy animated series, that's what happened with Wonder Woman (he wasn't fired - that's bullshit). And as someone else said, this isn't a Fox situation, it's Marvel. Marvel who hired him, worships him, and who's extremely influenced by him. So the sky ain't fallin.
