In A More Perfect World, This Would Be Arnold's Next Movie Poster!

Published at:  Jan 02, 2000 5:21:28 AM CST

Many years ago, back around the time CUTTHROAT ISLAND was just a script, there was a project called CRUSADE that was full on ready to happen. We would have seen this movie about 2-4 years ago. The production was all set to go forward, until the addle minded dimwits at CAROLCO greenlighted CUTTHROAT ISLAND with Renny Harlin and Geena Davis instead of THIS MOVIE!

A fellow out there by the name of Geppeto, pulled a few strings and got me this image of their banner would have looked like. The film is still in development. Even though it is still THE BEST SCRIPT TO EVER BE ASSOCIATED WITH EITHER ARNOLD OR VERHOEVEN! A FILM THAT WOULD TURN ALL OF US INTO RAVING A.B. KINGS!!! Sigh... I'm sorry. It's just.. I sat down and watched CONAN THE BARBARIAN on Dvd tonight, and then saw this in my email box, and goddamn it, this movie should be on my video self as a video, letterboxed video and DVD by this point. The Soundtrack, which should be by Poledouris should be in my CD player right now. BUuuuuut Nooooooo... The Best Arnold film ever languishes because of a constant bit of swaying back and forth. HAGEN!!!!

Hey hey, the guy above me is right, it could be a festering sore of a movie. However, when you got a film with Ahnold welding a sword, set in the crusades, your gonna have some serious blood. I'm talking about people getting imapled and driven into the ground on large spikes, limbs being torn off, and skulls squished under big ass boots kinda gore. The only thing that could have more gore than this, would be an live action version of Nija Scroll. Oooh live action Ninja Scroll, theirs an idea.

Bearing in mind that all we've seen is a poster, no script, treatment of even rough notes.
yeah, the poster is kinda nice, but then it IS a marketing tool, so it's supposed to be kinda nice.
Personally, I'm pinning all my hopes on the "Doc Savage" movie, hey, wouldn't it be cool if they went back to the origins, only cut out the comedic aspects of the George Pal movie........and had Savage investigating the death of his dad, played in a cameo by Ron Ely ?

If any studio suits are reading this, the idea's yours for free, providing you give us a decent movie !

I won't go so far as to getting a hard-on over Arnold like that sick fuck, but I will say that would be a bad-ass movie. This could even top the 13th Warrior in terms of anticipation for a movie that has heads being lopped off and bodies ripped to shreds.
And what the hell was wrong with Cutthroat Island, other than the pussy Modine. That movie gave what was advertised: a big, loud, action-packed, pirate movie. Renny Harlin fucking ROCKS!!

I totally dug this movie! I mean, where else can you get Arnold Stang and Arnold Strong in one big blockbuster like this?!! Arnold Stang usually gets $20 million a picture and has his own private jumbo jet. Arnold Stang did this movie as a favor to break in the new kid, Arnold Strong(Schwarznegger). That sure was nice of him. "Alakai, alako, Alakazam". Sung by Frankie Avalon.

Guys! Let's stop and think here. Arnold wielding a sword is a sure fire money maker (not counting "Red Sonja"), and Verhoeven and Arnold were a great team on "Total Recall". But if you guys honestly think that a movie about the holy crusades is going to be made without pissing off every muslim on the planet, you are in for a major let down. Just remember the uproar over the trailer for "The Siege", and how Disney caved in and changed the words to the opening song in "Alladin" before it was released on video. Sorry guys, while I'm just as pumped as the next guy about Arnold not making another total piece of shit movie (and it is highly likely that this one would have rocked), this one WILL stay on the shelf along with "Sgt. Rock". Nothing to see here, move along.

    by 6 of 24

Arnold RULES but I find it impossible to believe that Verhoven could have come up with a "great" script at this stage of his career. He's been on an obvious, serious, and irreversible downhill slide for the last 10 years. His Dutch films like "The Fourth Man" were stylish, original and gripping, but ever since he came to Hollywood his movies have been getting worse and worse. From the trashily enjoyable "Basic Instinct" to the okay "Total Recall" to the unspeakable "Showgirls"... this is not an upward career path, okay? Ahnuld had better work on staying buds with Jim Cameron instead.

    Offending Muslims

    by kraven

    The business of the actor, director, screenwriter, cinematographer et al, is to strive to entertain. Hence I cannot see how a movie set in the tenth or eleventh century would offend any sensible muslim as long as it did not portray their god or prophets in a negative light. Racial stereotyping a la The Siege is a different matter, for one is looking at a contemporary culture;
the world of a millenium ago was a very different place, and both Islam and Christianity, along with its adherents, have changed, if not beyond all recognition, then at least to a considerable extent. Crusade, by all accounts (Harry, for one, has read a full script, and his remarks are archived in AICN), is a war film, plain and simple, and I recommend that we withhold judgement until such time that we have reason to be concerned that the project is in danger of being taken over by dubious talents (i.e. Jon Peters). My New Year's Resolution is not to dump on a forthcoming movie until I have been furnished by what I believe to be ample cause. I for one like the sound of this movie very much indeed, and I hope Schwarzenegger and Verhoeven have the chance to make it. As for Doc Savage, I remember the pig's ear George Pal made of it, and I look forward to a more faithful adapatation. Oh, and a Happy New Year to all.

    This movie would offend Muslims

    by powerslave

Even if it was historically accurate, 'Crusade' would still piss off lots of people. In this day and age, political-correctness is much more important than historical accuracy. And today, everything is offensive. Remember when black activists were all over Disney because they thought the hyenas in 'The Lion King' were racist stereotypes? Although Arnold and Verhoeven don't seem like the PC sort, they would probably have to cave in to outside pressure. I could just see Arnold and Verhoven taking a meeting with the head of the Muslim Anti-Defamation League: "Why couldn't Arnold have a noble Muslim friend? Or wife? Make sure you show all the Muslims in the best light possible. Muslims weren't really like that." A friend of mine mentions this movie, and every time he does, he brings up the "dead donkey" scene. Does anyone know what this is about?

    Crusades?

    by alessan

I wouldn't expect Verhoeven to tackle the complexities of the Crusader period (the closest thing he ever comes to depth is tongue-in-cheek cynicism) but portarying it as "good-guy cusaders versus bad-guy arabs" would be grossly inappropriate. The Europeans were hardly the heroes of the affair; they came after no real provocation, slaughtering everyone in their path. The Crusades, in fact, had a great deal in common with the U.S. involvement in Vietnam - the ulterior motives, the inept leadership, the "why are we here?" attitude. Also, remember which side lost? No one would call me much of a Muslim sympathiser, but I know my history. Now, this does not necesserally prevent us from telling the story from the western point of view; it just shows us that this film can be "Apocolypse Now" instead of "Rambo", or, God forbid, "The Green Berets". And as for the guy claiming that "it was a long time ago, nobody would care enough to be insulted" - you don't know that much about the Middle East, do you, pal?

    Alessan?Middle East

    by kraven

As a matter of fact, although I cannot claim to be an expert, I know a modest amount about the middle east, having spent a number of years there. But that is hardly the point; for I said nothing like "it was a long time ago, and therefore no-one would be offended." I merely pointed out that the world of a thousand years ago was vastly different one from our own. I am sure that there were just as many people walking the earth in those days who were as enslaved by their religion and narrow-minded bigotry as there are today, but that does not mean their views are any more palatable then than they are today; only that nobody (at least in the West) is murdered by their governments any longer in the name of whatever god happens to be "hot" at the time. As we enter the new millenium, it occurs to me that perhaps it is time to put an end to religion of all kinds. It would be the first step towards a truly enlightened and caring world.

"Crusade" will still remain my second favorite science fiction show of all time, sandwiched between Neon Genesis Evangelion at #1 and Babylon 5 at #3 (The original Star Trek is #4). You guys have no right to take that name and change it into a... a... mere *action* movie, even if it does have Ah-nold and a fantastic script! Oh... and to the guy who wants to end religion... not possible. Think about it... humans always gotta have a central philosophy. And if any network executives are reading this: PICK UP CRUSADE, you bastards! It's amazing, it's wonderful, it's almost as good as Evangelion, and goddammit, that's *saying* something!

    The plot could be...

    by twisted mentat

Arnies a good old Teutonic KNight thats cracked alot of heads for the lord in his life, and his king (maybe Barbarossa) calls for a crusade, and like the faithful knight he is, he goes. They stomp a few heads on the way, but when the get to Constantanople, due to a misunderstanding, the Crusaders sack the city, killing, raping, and pillaging. This places the seed of doubt in what they're doing beacuse...the Byzantines aren't the enemy, the Saracens are. he spends the rest of the Movie doubting what they're doing, and starts to see the brutality of it all along the way, and to make any PC thugs happy, he starts to see how noble the Saracens truely are. In the end though, this kind of thinking gets him the stake...
Well, thats just my simple outline, but i doubt its something like that...i just chose that crusade beacuse it was always my personal fave...ah well.

As much as I would kill to see Crusader (and I will, should it come to that), Cutthroat island still kicked major fat booty. How can it not with that bitchin' music and cannonfire coming out of a 2700 watt (yuup, I have one) sub and being displayed in all its glorious beauty on a 60" screen.
And about the argument of political correctness being more important than historical accuracy, I agree that Hollywood seems to think this way. I think some of those suits oughta rethink their priorities and not give a flying fuck about pissing off a few people. You can't please everybody.

    The Crusades were HISTORY!

    by btwr

I agree with many previous posts stating that History needs to be portrayed, even if it occurs to people that their ancestors might have been a bit naughty. As I am currently a student in Jerusalem, I have studied Jerusalem History, and yes, I have touched upon that "little tidbit" known as the Crusades. The Muslims shouldn't necessarily be the ones worried about being portrayed as ruthless! The Christians are the ones who slaughtered Muslim and Jewish civilians the night after the conquest of Jerusalem. Even if it WAS the Muslims who were bad, what's wrong with learning it. Did you know that in Germany today, it is ILLEGAL to deny the Holocaust (as only insane people would, but I digress). The point is that people SHOULD learn history, even when it may portray their people as bad. Go Arnie!

Are you serious? I've seen the art for "I Am Legend"...the remake of Heston's "The Omega Man" that Arnold and Ridley Scott were planning on doing. Now THAT would have been a great, great film. Was it the lame characters or the disappointing ending that sold Starship Troopers to you, Siskel? Or maybe the horrendous writing? Anyway, unless he does something fast, our man Arnold is long dead. End Of Days? I read the script. Did I then go to see it? Not a chance. Did anyone tell me I made a mistake? Just the opposite. DON'T SIT DOWN AND TAKE CRAP LIKE STARSHIP TROOPERS!!!! Thank you all for your reference to the fact that a soundtrack does indeed exist to Conan and where I may find it. I should have checked CD Now in the first place, but did not because I had thought if it did exist it would be out of print by now. Instead I checked the Internet Movie DataBase, which has no listing under soundtrack for that movie. Since they are usually pretty thorough, this led me to believe that one was never issued. Now I know better. Thanks for your effort!

    The Writers?

    by vulcan bob

Nobody has yet to mention the writers. The version I read was dated 1/24/93 and was written by Walon Green with revisions by Gary Goldman. I,m not going to bore you with detailed career histories(lots of web sites out there already)but Mr. Green has written great stuff like " The Wild Bunch" to crap like "Solarbabies" Mr. Goldman likewise has "Total Recall" & "Navy SEALS" to his credit. The version I read was pretty crappy. But it would still make a cool movie. Mr. Schwarzenegger & Mr. Verhooven have both made good and bad films. The point to all my ramblings is that 1) Without writers there would be nothing to film! 2)Movies are a collabrative effort. We won't know how good or bad it is till we see it. If ever!

I'm the one who brought up Verhoeven's downhill career path ("The Fourth Man" to "Basic Instinct" to, ugh, "Showgirls"), and want to respond to the guy who brought up "Robocop" and "Starship Troopers". Dude, you proved my point beautifully. "Robocop" was fairly entertaining, and made in the early 90's before Verhoeven began cranking out REAL trash like his latest - "Starship Troopers". "Starship Troopers" SUCKED! It was a piece of fascist, jackboot-kissing crap! It was repellent! It was incompetent! Verhoeven should be tied to a gurney and have enough electricity pumped through his helpless brain to eliminate any memory of the last ten years of his life! Only then should be be allowed near another camera.

Paul and Ahnold's best stuff seems to have the sci-fi bend. I really like it. "Crusade" would be fine if any story gets put into it. If it's just Ahnold, a sword, and so much viscera... well, I won't cry if I miss it, and it will prolly not do so well anyway.

Ahnold, Verhoeven, and Poledouris should all do the Rollerball deal. I can't think of a more exciting prospect for Ahnold or Paul (or Rollerball). Cast Nicholson as Mr. Bartholomew and no one's career would be "Goin' South" anymore. Seriously. (See Nicholson as Houseman: "You can be stopped!!")

If Crusade gets made I will prolly go see it. The future is more fun, though. I'd really like to see Ahnold ride that Fatboy in the Rollerball arena. Please rise... for our corporate hymn

    by crom

I'm going to make a few assumptions here: 1) you may have a brain and it could be thrown into the "on" position, 2) you don't really know what the word "fascist" means, 3) you don't really hate the Dutch, and 4) you really haven't thought a lot about Starship Troopers. So, shut yer piehole and go read: http://www.neuronomicon.com/main/videodrome/19990614/buff_bods.htm

    Offending Muslims

    by melkur

Crusade will probably never happen due to Muslims being offended at the subject matter. So go ahead and make it as Muslims get offended at everything.

Why is it the cool Arnie stuff sits on the shelves like Crusades and I Am Legend while crap like End of Days gets made?
