Zemeckis moves on to the live action drama FLIGHT!

Published at: April 21, 2011, 12:31 a.m. CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Just recently I blathered a bit in my Behind the Scenes Picture of the Day column about how much I miss Robert Zemeckis in live-action world and it seems that the movie gods were listening.

According to Borys Kit at THR Zemeckis will be directing a drama called Flight, for Paramount. Based on a script by John Gatins the flick is about an alcoholic druggie pilot who happens to save the day and his passengers in an emergency situation, but in the FAA's investigation the man's problems with substance abuse starts to surface.

Kit says that Denzel Washington has been attached in the past and is believed to still be involved.

So, Yellow Submarine is dead, but we get Zemeckis back in the non-cartoon world. Thoughts?

    Will suck

    by oogles

Because I'm on the Internet and think so. Therefore it will be.

Still one of the BEST... Bob rules.

    by Mennen

  • LET Zemeckis direct live action again!

  • Great Scott!

I actually liked Mars Needs Moms. I couldn't believe it.

    by antonphd

I don't know who the fuck they thought was going to like that movie, but I did. I actually really really liked it. I'll probably buy it so one day when I have kids they can watch it. It's a good family film.

  • April 21, 2011, 1:10 a.m. CST

    No thanks, Bob.

    by Kirbymanly

Sounds like a movie of the week. Get back together with Gale!

  • April 21, 2011, 1:31 a.m. CST

    antonphd are you Robert Zemeckis?

    by Andrew Coleman

Kidding, I actually wanted to see the movie but just didn't. tollboy6t6 has it right though with MNM bombing maybe studios aren't pumped for animated films like that. I'm glad he's doing live action. Maybe he can go back to basics and give us something great.

    FINALLY

    by TheMcflyFarm

About time! Sounds like a decent enough plot for him to make something good out of. However, if it involves Denzel Washington in some sort of situation involving a form of transportation, I just know Tony Scott is going to take over for Zemeckis at some point. So we'll just see what happens.

    bout damn time

    by Billy_D_Williams

and what the fuck has Gale been up to?...they need to get back together.

    Dayum that sounds boring

    by MrMajestic

Happy to see Zemeckis finally give up on all that mo-cap garbage but couldn't he have picked a better story? Sounds like Cage's Snake Eyes but boring-er.

The FedEX jet sequence in CAST AWAY...

    by justmyluck

... was incredible. So, I'd say Zemeckis would be more than worthy for this one, especially if the project goes into THE LOST WEEKEND territory.

  • I couldn't give two shits about his fucking cartoons. Those aren't my thing, so be it. It's an entirely different perspective when dealing w/ live action pictures. Like the dude above me stated the plane sequence in Cast Away was eerie and chilling and all sorts of other stuff.

    ROGER RABBIT 2!!!

    by Atomica

This is frankly, the only project we want to see right now out of Bob. He's a brilliant director that is the only person to possibly make this project happen and accomplish a respectful and worthwhile sequel.

    Mars Needs Moms

    by Bass Ackwards

I didn't see it, but from the commercials it looked like the first film to use the mocap that actually merited using it. Zemekis seemed to really like the idea of mocap, but had no real ideas for it, and just ended up using really expensive technology to make fairly pedestrian films awkwardly. Hopefully he's got it out of his system and he'll go back to being a film director who wants to make good films instead of a techie who's got a hard on for one particular technique.

Can't he just make a movie about a flying DeLorean instead?

    by KEVIN_COSTNERS_RECYCLED_PISS

I haven't seen one of those in 30 years.

  • So, sure, this sounds great.

  • April 21, 2011, 6:23 p.m. CST

Isn't this the synopsis for "Airplane"?

    by Packabong

The classic Zucker bros film lampooning this sort of storyline (known as "Flying High" here in Australia). They can't be serious, can they? It better swing more towards "Unstoppable" than "Flying High".

Would have loved to have had Zemeckis directing Superman...

    by Orbots Commander

...though I know that he reportedly turned it down (it was his if he wanted it), with some quote about how the whole concept has been done to the death and that he couldn't bring anything new to it.

    Zemeckis doing live action? Weird.

    by sweeneydave

Will it have Marty McFly? Or will everything be greenscreen? Or maybe we can have all computer generated voices synced up with real actors. C'mon Bob! That's the next frontier! How human can we make computers sound? No more Speak N Spell!

    Halle-FUCKING-lujah

    by Nasty In The Pasty

It could be a movie about Tom Hanks having explosive diharrhea for two hours, just seeing an ACTUAL Tom Hanks and ACTUAL diharrhea would be like manna from heaven at this point in Zemeckis' career.

    Director/Star

    by Munro Kelly

Why does it feel like, if Denzel stars that Tony Scott should direct and if Zemeckis directs Tom Hanks should star?

Yet it opened first in the USA. Them getting Thor at little bit earlier doesn't adversely affect you in any way.

    Dear Marty

    by CT1

If my calculations are correct, you will receive this letter immediately after you saw the DeLorean struck by lightning. First, let me assure you that I'm alive and well. I've been living happily these past 8 months in the year 1885. The lightning bolt that hit the DeLorean cause a gigawatt overload which scrambled the time circuits, activated the flux capacitor and sent me back to 1885. The overload shorted out the time circuits, and destroyed the flying circuits. Unfortunately the car will never fly again. I set myself up as a blacksmith, as a front while I attempted to repair the damage to the time circuits. Unfortunately, this proved impossible because suitable replacement parts won't be invented until 1947. However, I've gotten quite adept in shoeing horses and fixing wagons. I've buried the DeLorean in the abandoned Del Gado mine, adjacent to the old Boot Hill Cemetery as shown on the enclosed map. There it should remain undisturbed and preserved until you uncover it in 1955. Inside you will find repair instructions. My 1955 counterpart... should have no trouble repairing it so that you can drive it back to the future. Once you have returned to 1985, destroy the time machine... I am perfectly happy living in the fresh air and wide open spaces, and I feel that unnecessary time travel only risks further disruption of the time line. And please take care of Einstien for me.. I know you will give him a good home. Remember to walk him twice a day and that he only likes canned dog food. These are my wishes. Please respect them and follow them. And so, Marty, I now say farewell and wish you godspeed. You have always been a good and loyal friend to me, and you have made a real difference in my life. I will always treasure our relationship, and think on you with fond memories, warm feelings, and a special place in my heart. Your friend in time, "Doc" Emmett L. Brown September 1, 1885.

WOW! this is some great news!

    by The_Crimson_King

man, Robert Zemeckis used to be FUCKING GREAT! one of my personal favorite directors as a matter of fact, but ever since he got mixed up in that CGI mocap bullshit he started to suck, it was like a damn body snatchers scenario, so while the movie itself doesn't sound all that interesting I'm just happy he's finally directing real actors again

  • April 25, 2011, 12:37 a.m. CST

    time Travel

    by Tigs

I thought I read here that Zemeckis was doing some kind of time travel movie.... not Back to the Future.
