Michael Clarke Duncan is the voice of Kilowog in GREEN LANTERN!!!

Hey folks, Harry here..  In my sophmore year of High School, KILOWOG was birthed into world - that summer before.   I've loved him ever since.  There was just something so... I don't know...  Clancy Brown about him.  He was the lovable pitbull of the Corps.  Now Kilowog is being voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan - I kind of love the casting.   I mean, he did walk THE GREEN MILE, so that's plenty reason to plant the ring on his finger.   I tell ya, GREEN LANTERN is getting better and better sounding.   It has a solid script, a sometimes terrific director and well - I'm liking what I see happening these days with the film.   What do y'all think?

No brainer casting - Too bad Kilowog

    by jimbojones123

Looks like an overgrown slug in preview pics. The design for The Big Guy is maybe the weakest link in the film. It reminds me of the Koopas from the Mario Brothers movie. Stupid design Poozers!

  • April 12, 2011, 11:10 p.m. CST

what the fuck? Are they just NOW casting for voices and shit?

    by Dharma4

or are they slowly unveiling it? which is fucking dumb, anyway

  • April 12, 2011, 11:11 p.m. CST

John Goodman was my choice for Kilowog back in the day.

    by thecomedian

MCD's not bad but it's a lazy choice and I'm not a big fan of his acting but I guess it's par the course since they decided to go with complete GCI when they could have mixed it with an actor in a suit. I still have faith in Martin Campbell regardless. The guy knows how to launch a franchise.

    Not to be a douche...

But wasn't this announced around a month or so ago, followed around a week later with the news that Geoffrey Rush was voicing Tomar Rei or however it's spelt? Sorry, just feels like it's a bit of 'me too' news that's all.

LOL Green lantern is going to suck like dare devil did.

  • Or that "Dragonriders of Pern" is coming to the big screen. Or that Joaquin Phoenix was cast in the lead of the new PT Anderson movie. BTW, Michael Clarke Duncan's been cast as the voice of a giant hulking alien? Why, that's just inspired.

  • April 12, 2011, 11:32 p.m. CST

    by Chewtoy

Honestly... Spidey's silver slippers look less ridiculous by comparison. Green Lantern's boots have all the little toes defined, like he was wearing those rainbow socks with each toe separate. The rest of the costume looks fine. Pictures are online just about everywhere.

    Kilowog's Lantern Oath...

    by Fremen

Can any of youse poozers recite Kilowog's Green Lantern Oath? - While I like MCD's voice in most of his movies, I'd always heard a more gravelly-sounding voice in my head for Kilowog, with an almost Brooklyn-like hint to his accent. Not Duncan's bass. - Oh well, at least he's playing a hero again.

is you build a character and choose the best voice for it. Thats why you sometimes get little known actors that are perfect for the voice of the char. If you start with the voice and build a char around that, we all know it just does not fit. SO WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU USE MCD FOR KILOWOG FOR FUCKN FUCK SAKES. GET MONSTROUS VOICE THAT WE DONT KNOW. by MichaelCorleone

This news broke on March 29th. The moment has passed Harry. Padding your site with recycled information doesn't really help things. I'm saying this as a have got to sort this shit out. Entertainment sites are a dime a dozen in this age. If you're not careful you'll find yourself at the end of the line. You're treading water right now and the sharks are circling. If you can't offer a unique experience, people will flock to other sites. Keeping the status quo will sometimes push people to go elsewhere. Posting two week old news is just asking for it. I know you have a lot going on in your life right now, but be careful. You're losing your edge in a highly competitive arena. "See that look in their eyes, Rock? You gotta get that look back, Rock. Eye of the tiger, man. There is no tomorrow! THERE IS NO TOMORROW! THERE IS NO TOMORROW!"

How are they going to Lip-Sync this? (answer:Badly)

    by harryknowlesnothingaboutfilm

So the film comes out pretty soon. Now I guess they had standins for the alien characters or at least a temp voice track to edit with and of course CGI takes a while to render.. SO. they either get MCD et al. to Dub in their voice exactly to the movements of the CGI character with no room for improvisation etc. or like most of these sorts of things words come out while the mouths look like they are chewing gum and its all a bit shit. Look at Pixar they record each line many many times way before any rendering is done and then constantly adjust as the film is made so it LOOKS right and the lip-sync actually syncs. Martin Campbell is an awsome and underated director and I have faith he can make something of this but I dont want the film to go all Phantom Menace when they get to Oa.

    by HollywoodHellraiser

Kilowog? KILOWOG? I wonder how this'll play in Brixton?

    by Col. Tigh-Fighter

Is it me, or is it not very politically correct to have a large blackman playing a character called Kilowog? Maybe its a UK thing, but wog is short for Gollywog, a Victorian blackman rag doll that gave its name to one of the worse UK racist words. Poor Robinsons Jam had to drop the Gollywog of the front of their jamjars after the PC brigade got involved a few years ago. Gollyhwog dolls were banned from state schools. And you have a very large blackman playing, in what appears to be all seriousness, a character called KILOWOG???!!! Lol and a fucking half! :) It would be like a character called, er....Humongonigger and not being a pisstake or Blackpsloitation flik I can tell from your posts that he fits nicely into the GL universe, but I guess he's not a racist analogy in disguise. Aint language funny?

    by The Chosen

Denys Haysbert of 24 fame (but also doing a master part in Jarhead) was supposedly attached to the part, probably because he did some voice for Kilowog in the Justice League cartoon, and Haysbert is much better than Duncan as a voice actor. Not gonna ruin the movie, Duncan is a fine actor himself, but "it could be".

    Ninja Turtles/Hero Turtles

    by DonLogan

In the UK, local censorship policies deemed the word ninja to have excessively violent connotations for a children's program. Michelangelo's nunchaku were removed as at the time were banned from appearing in 18 rated movies. Scenes of the Turtles using any weapons were generally toned down. By the time the film came out they stopped giving a shit and left it all in used the name 'Ninja turtles'.

    An Uncharacteristically Serious Post

Check this out. It's an intro to Geoff Johns' GL: SECRET ORIGIN by Ryan Reynolds, and it made me feel a lot more comfortable with the upcoming movie (and Ryan as Hal): "Ryan Reynolds on Green Lantern: Secret Origin I was never an expert on Hal Jordan. I’d always known the basic gist of the character: I knew he wore a lot of green. Had a ring possessed of infinite power bestowed upon him by a dying alien. And I knew he’s survived many successors and wildly diverse iterations over an astonishing multi-decade run. If you like sports analogies, he’s the New York Yankees. Lately though, I’ve gotten to know the guy pretty damn well. Like Hal Jordan, I too was given the gift of a ring. Mine was more symbolic in its power but no less auspicious. I was asked to put that ring on and bring Hal Jordan to life in a whole new form: Film. Not a job I take lightly. About a year and a half ago, I first sat down with Martin Campbell, Donald DeLine, and a man whom I consider responsible for the resurgent interest in Green Lantern, Geoff Johns. They were all eager to build a big screen superhero who would both live up to his lengthy legacy, yet simultaneously find a foothold with a whole new audience--young and old alike. Hal Jordan was about to become a living, breathing person. And I was going to be the guy to do it. No pressure... True fans of Hal Jordan know the caliber of hero we’re talking about. From the moment I came aboard, I saw the challenge and opportunity in creating a classic yet modern day hero who can throw a punch, tell a joke, and kiss the girl. I saw the guy as a cross between Chuck Yeager and Han Solo. The Green Lantern saga is so limitless in its scope, I’m sure it was a relief for the writers to know it was going to be an origin story of sorts. They need look no further than the starting point. Green Lantern encompasses a seemingly limitless supply of adventure: fighter jets, space travel, action, aliens, betrayal, humor, tragedy, heroes, villains, and even a rather complicated little love story. These are just a few ingredients, which have been a part of this epic for over 50 years. It’s a great time to be a superhero fan. Technology is such that bringing Green Lantern to life properly is finally possible. Creating energy constructs based upon infinite will and pure imagination can vividly appear before our very eyes. This technological leap also happened to coincide with a time period in which the world is fascinated by big screen comic book adaptations. Preparing to get Hal up and running in living color was helped greatly by this book, Secret Origin, illustrated beautifully by Ivan Reis, who I had the pleasure of meeting on the set in New Orleans. This book basically gave me the introduction I was looking for in order to begin the incredible ascent to Oa. I hope you like it."

Harry, you need to get behind this guy. Oklahoma's Michael Koehler wants to build working AT-AT from 'Star Wars' - and he needs your help! By Michael Sheridan DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Wednesday, April 13th 2011, 8:32 AM Lucasfilm Ltd. The Imperial Walker, technically refered to as an AT-AT (All Terrain Armored Transport) stormed the rebel base on Hoth in 'Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.' An Oklahoma City man wants to give people a new hope in these dark times. How does he plan to do it? By building a massive, earth-crushing Imperial Walker from "Star Wars." The self-professed geek is aiming to raise funds to create a fully functional, life-sized version of an AT-AT (All Terrain Armored Transport). Fans would know the behemoth - estimated to realistically stand about 73-feet high - as a weapon of the Empire that trampled through the snowy plains of Hoth in "The Empire Strikes Back." "I thought this would be a good rallying point to make us feel good again," Michael Koehler told the Daily News on Tuesday. It is his hope that by constructing the mechanical monstrosity, he will bring together sci-fi lovers from around the world. And so far, he may be doing just that. "I've gotten e-mails from people in Norway, the U.K. and Australia" who want to volunteer to help, he said. The 38-year-old father of three has even been contacted by engineers and roboticists who have told him "this is in the realm of the possible." He was inspired to embark on this endeavor after feeling the economic pinch that has gripped much of the nation, in addition to the political strife in Washington and conflicts around the world. Things not unlike what plagued a certain galaxy far, far away. "It's just a general feeling that we as a country aren't getting along very well," Koehler said. Koehler is already accepting donations via his tumblr website - - and will shortly be accepting more donations via kickstarter, a website that allows artists, filmmakers and inventors to raise money. He acknowledges that the out-of-this-world project could require a galactic amount of time and money, but Koehler's taking things piece by piece. "Based on our rough plans, we would split it up into several build teams around the country," he said. Different parts could be built in different places, and then assembled at his Oklahoma home. The former newspaper man-turned-social media consultant hopes that, if the Force is with him, he'll have the project completed within a few years. "I have an 11 year old, who I've raised to be nuts about everything geek, and he's all excited," Koehler said. "Oh, please black people! I don't want to offend you because in order to appear as a super cool liberal I have to appear to love each and every one of you! In fact, I hate my own race and wish I could convert to black and then I would be so liberally happy!" And of course Harry loves this news. They could cast Joan Rivers in the role and he would still be ecstatic. Wouldn't want TPTB to recall his bribe ring.

    to be fair....

    by VXXXJesterXXXV

all of you saying this is old news. AICN is NOT the only site reporting this today as new news are both reporting this today as new news. Maybe something came out a few weeks back, but this could be the official announcement..... That said I like this casting overall. Madsen did a great job in First Flight, but I can see MCD doing a really good job with it too.

  • ...Also, you should know that the coffee I choked on was BLACK. Cause my self-hatred won't allow me to enjoy it any other way. Destroy Whitey, muthufuckahs!!!!!!!

  • I was a Marvel guy growing up and I don't know a whole lot about Green Lantern. Is there any good comic trade paperback I can get?

Gots my comicbook nerd hat on today. Try Geoff Johns GREEN LANTERN: SECRET ORIGIN.

Secret Origin is the place to start. Excellent book, and a perfect introduction to the GL world. I'd imagine it was also something of a road map for the movie writers.

Uh yeah, what's up with the old ass "news"? I understand you're eager to get back to it, but we've had enough drivel non-news shoved down our fucking throats on this site the last month! Due to health issues on certain administrators of the site, along with the writers gone reporting on an event nobody cared about where we got what felt like WEEKS of interviews with directors to movies that nobody is going to see or just NOTHING. Look, that's fine, I know what the deal is, and I'm just "glad" we're getting back to business as usual and you're trying to reach out to us.. unfortunately, we're starting to go RIGHT back to the same fucking shit, reporting late or not at all, the "big name" ass kissing, accusations of selling out, etc.. some on this talkback have insinuated that perhaps some of the energy you display in your Green Lantern love here is just your usual reciprocal blowjob with the studio.. I don't really see that (yet), and I believe you genuinely love this character and you'd be so loving WITHOUT studio interference. However, I do find it odd for somebody who loves GL that much that there's been no mention of the 3 new posters released, choosing instead to release a half month old bit of news. Could it be because you KNOW that talkback is going to get fucking SHREDDED, I mean they're going to fucking rip it up and chew it up and spit it in your fucking FACE, and that's not gonna look too good for your cause here, is it? The posters are another thing they shouldn't have released along with a horrible ass first trailer, and have a serious case of Spiderman crotch, along with little Hulk feet. His nose looks crooked in one too.

He wasn't so great in Daredevil.

    by cookylamoo

He sort of confused the Kingpin with the Kingfish. I mean really, Michael, lose the see-gar.

  • April 13, 2011, 4:52 p.m. CST

He wasn't miscast as Kingpin, but...

    by Huey_Freemans_afro

he could've used some better direction. He played the role too arch, which wasn't necessary. I also think they should've used the camera tricks they used in The Green Mile to make him look even bigger.

  • ....I'd probably choose Michael Clarke Duncan. Seriously, in this country Wog is as loaded a word as Nigger, or just abouts. If Nigger is The Emperor, then Nignog is Moff Tarkin and Wog is Darth Vader.

A good way to get into GL would be reading the Showcase Presents Green Lantern. They compile a lot of the comics into one volume. I own volume 4 which is a fun read.
