Some Definite Spoiler Pics From MEN IN BLACK III!

Nordling here.

This one's apparently had script problems out the wazoo, but Barry Sonnenfeld's MEN IN BLACK III is still on track and happening for a release in 2012.  The following pictures were released by The Daily Mail, and definitely go into spoiler territory, so be warned:

According to the article, at some point Will Smith's J goes back in time and works with the young K, played by Tommy Lee Jones in the original film and in this film's modern day scenes, and by Josh Brolin in the 1960s.  So there's definitely a time travel story in addition to all the alien hijinks.  Brolin looks just like a young Tommy Lee in these pics.

I hope Sonnenfeld got the script situation sorted out; but we'll see in 2012.  I loved the first film, thought the second was just there, and hopefully the third film will bring the story back to form.

Nordling, out.

Smith still can do what needs to be done, and Brolin is scary in how much he looks like TLJ. If they can maintain that Ghostbusters vibe of the first one, I won't hate.

  • April 12, 2011, 4:30 p.m. CST

So, did Tommy not want to work much for this paycheck, or what?

    It's not really a spoiler

    by twogunjames

It's already been widely reported that Brolin was playing Jones in the 60's, and that time travel was part of the story. I've read it all over the place.

  • When all these retarded super hero movies you get boners over have the most absurd, stupid, idiotic plots ever. I guess if Will Smith had a gay costume on it would be ok. Or maybe it he had some stupid ass ring which gave him magic....or a big ass hammer....or a stupid shield he throws around. That makes it ok, doesnt it? and I'm not defending this movie...I just find it ironic that you nerds who love comic book movies are bitching about the plot of a movie.

  • April 12, 2011, 5:04 p.m. CST

yes but will there be a scene where...

josh brolin is riding a tiny bike and is held onto a speeding car? that would be awesome.

  • April 12, 2011, 5:08 p.m. CST

will will smith get an assassination attempt?

    - like ahole ramirez said, times were different for blacks in the 60's.....will he accidentally rub elbows with MLK or malcom X and will he somehow affect the future of black america in some cornball causal loop? i'd bet a testicle on it. will we see humanoid aliens getting hit with firehoses? alien only bathrooms and water fountains?

looks like brolin is telling the punchline to an old guy-type dirty joke and will is pretending that it's funny. not a genuine least, not as entertained by the joke as brolin was.

what if J going back into the 60's

is actually the the origin and source of JIVE TALK. people pick up the will-isms, and the eventually morph into the urban talk of the late 60's and seventies, where a young J/will smith grows up and learns to speak thusly. then goes back in time and plants that very seed. mind blown.

    by Voice O. Reason

Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin aren't far enough apart in age for Jones to have looked like Brolin a HALF-CENTURY ago. Maybe if they were travelling back in time to the 1980s.

  • April 12, 2011, 6:17 p.m. CST

Brolin is too old for Jones in 1963

    by ColonelAmerica

If the "present day" is now, then 1963 would be Tommy Lee Jones at about 20, not 40ish Josh Brolin. Or is the movie's present still 1997, making Jones about 30ish in the 60s. Either way, unless Agent K is supposed to be in his 80s, Brolin is too old.

  • April 12, 2011, 6:17 p.m. CST

    voice o reason

i agree. but the series is totally open to using some gimmick like K drinking some alien life extension serum or even going cryogenic in the seventies for all we know, unfortunately. i mean we already assume the MIB are high tech.

  • April 12, 2011, 6:19 p.m. CST

but that's also me doing their writing for them...

and they totally don't deserve the effort. why do we do that as cinema fans? try to fill in the huge mistakes of directors and writers that get paid amounts of money for one movie that we will never accumulate in our entire lives.

  • April 12, 2011, 6:31 p.m. CST

Tommy Lee Jones is 64, Josh brolin is 43

    by Dan

Tommy lee jones would have been in his 20's in the 1960's. I think seeing the MIB in the 80's would be interesting but for some reason they're going to cheat and get will smith in the 60's. I'm guessing Agent K was bitten by a space bug or infected by an alien virus that makes him age really slowly.

I am okay with a time travel film as long as they have that script fixed up. Loved the first MIB, only liked the last five minutes of the second one.

    Will and Jada aren't gay

    by Hipshot

They might be bi. But both of them have definitely enjoyed sex with the opposite sex. Never met either, but know people who know 'em and have been around 'em. At most, they're just freaky and like it every which way. As for blacks in the 60's getting a lot of racist comments--depends on where you were. I lived through the 60's, and if you were in a major city, and didn't hang with assholes, no there was no major problem. Little Southern town? Hell Naw.

I have a friend who worked costumes on a Cruise movie, and said that Tom was making googly eyes at a very gay young man, they disappeared into his trailer, which proceeded to rock a bit, and both emerged a couple of hours later looking quite relaxed. Not proof, but no one on-set seemed to doubt what was going on.

    by MagnoliAB

Calling people nerds and complaining about people liking super hero movies.... then has a name about The SynderMan movie. I don't consider myself what you may call, a "nerd," you have to admit that time travel is weak, grasping, and desperate plot to take when you need something new for inject some life into the story. Please see: LOST. Season was good, final was incredible, but clearly they just used time travel, because it was an isolated season that had no real barring on any other season, including the final season, and it left continunity issues. LOST writers didn't even think of time travel til after Season 3... when they were low on ideas... as evidenced by the final season.

    Will Smith Love scenes

    by Hipshot

No black or Asian star has ever had a love scene in a film that earned over 100 million. Will had one in "Seven Pounds" and it tanked at the box office, earning about 30% of his previous. Those are facts. Now, one can argue the meaning of them, but my interpretation is pretty simple: male human beings aren't comfortable watching sex scenes featuring males of other racial groups, and they react, unconsciously, by disliking the movie--which affects its box office. Now, you could answer that "Seven Pounds was a lousy movie" but you'd find an interesting level of disagreement depending on whether you poll white or black viewers. After all, "Seven Pounds" won an NAACP Image Award for "Best Dramatic Picture" so the dislike can reasonably be considered to be most powerful in the white community. You might answer that blacks gave it a "pass," that they were willing to overlook its flaws. Could be. But it would also be reasonable to suggest that blacks were no more likely to distort their judgment positively than whites were to distort it negatively. No non-white male star ever. Most whites won't want to believe this, but they could go to boxoffice Mojo and check it out: about 23% of films that made over 100 million had love scenes. About 20% of those movies had non-white leads. Not one of those leads got laid. If you don't see a statistical blip, you just don't want to see it. Again, my theory of WHY is debatable. The fact itself is not.

    by Hipshot

Everyone's been pretty polite so far, and I appreciate it. I'm trying to differentiate between facts (the statistics) and my interpretations of those facts (opinions, even if they have a certain predictive capacity, and make sociobiological sense). Here we go: 1) No, the rules aren't the same for women. Halle Berry and other black women have had love scenes that audiences were willing to drool long as it was with white guys. 2) No, sub-groups of white people don't count as "inter-racial." Yeah, there is no actual scientifically valid line of demarcation between groups, and all of this devolves into perception. but on the social level, and for the sake of clarity, I ask you to pretend that the human race is divided into three basic groups: black, white, Asian. The statistics pop up with glaring clarity when you look at it this way. Jews, Arabs, even East Indians don't trigger this response the same way. 3) Vin Diesel MIGHT be considered to have gotten across this line. I talked to him about this one time. While he has some black blood, he has worked very hard (shaving his head to remove a visual cue, for instance) to be "exotic" instead of black. And the result has been pretty clear: he doesn't trigger this response. 4) It ain't Hollywood. I never said the movies don't get made. I said that the public won't turn out for them. In my opinion, if you think that by some odd statistical fluke every movie where a non-white male had sex "just happened" to be bad, you are deluding yourself. You are believing that your perception of subjective quality is the same an an objective measure of length or weight. Sorry. 5) No, I don't believe white people are especially bigoted. But they do outnumber the other groups, so their natural tendency to tribalism has serious weight. I'd suggest that about 10% of the American public measures people primarily by racial identification. Look at these talkbacks, and catch the percentage of bigoted references. 6) Perhaps America is "ready" for a black star having sex, perhaps not. But note the only film in which any black actor (and certainly not a star--just some nameless pusher-pimp) has sex is "Traffic", where instead of it being considered something positive, romantic, and desirable, it is clearly the lower level of hell. And THAT image white audiences agreed with, and rewarded with 125 million at the box office. 7) In addition to Diesel, I've talked to other black stars and directors about this phenomenon. Sam Jackson, for instance, said that on "Shaft" the director was forced to fold to pressure from the studio, which lied and kept pushing the sex scene back and back...until they finally just said "don't do it." Wesley Snipes was promised a love interest in the third Blade movie, and David Goyer reneged once he'd signed the contract, leading to the ugliness that pretty much ended with Wes being told "you'll never work in this town again." I know that's not Goyer's version of the story. Believe what you want. ## A cynical part of me wonders if the first black actor to get across the 100 million mark will be Jaden Smith--and that very real possibility is unconsciously recognized, and the core of much of the hating--which disproportionately comes from white viewers, so far as I can see. This is just fear of change, fear of the "other," fear of loss of cultural privilege. It is as old as mankind, but it seriously sucks to be living through it.

    hipshot....great post once again

    by Bobo_Vision

It's interesting that, as you say, Indians, Jews, and Arabs don't provoke the same response. Structurally, those groups have the same facial features as Caucasians. Round eyes, small nose, etc. But Asians have "mongoloid eyes", and blacks have a different nose, cheek bones, musculature, and genitals. I think the different genitals is a big part of it.

I think racial history has something to do with it

    by Hipshot

In England, blacks and Asians seem to be more "exotic" rather than "other." You see films like "love, Actually" where interracial relationships are matter of fact in a way they NEVER are in American film (unless it is the woman who is black or Asian.) Now, that's not to say English people don't have a negative response. The ratings for "Luther" tanked precisely after two episodes in which black men were boinking "white" women. Coincidence? Could be. I have no data on other such imagery in other shows. But in America, the social history has created so much fear and anger that it has to be added to whatever Amygdalic fear response skin color triggers in us. I mean, we had to get 100 years beyond slavery to even BEGIN to heal, and the process is probably just now really beginning (in the same way that you have to clean out a wound before it can really heal). Its a fascinating, painful process to watch. Or live through.

I'm white and i beleive you might be right. However this is hardly a caucasian issue and can be seen all over the world. Especially south east asia region, Japan, China and so on. Privilege of the majority and what not. Those people are fiercly prejudice against caucasians and don't even hide it even when we are standing in front of them. Still we have our prosperity and Hollywood to thank for being somewhat accepted. They want our money and our advertising has made sure that we've projected to everyone what the "standard" should be for beauty. Still, blacks are even worse off in those regions. by Hipshot

I specifically said that this is not something specially bad about white people, that I see it as a universal. I see NOTHING special about white people, positive or negative. Its just the human condition. And yes, you probably do have an unconscious "flinch" response--especially if the black man is with a white woman. It would be totally natural to expect that. Might be quite mild, but it would make little sense not to expect it to show up a hair, just as I'm not thrilled to see white men with black women--although if I saw black men having sex with ANY woman more often, it wouldn't be so irritating. But "racist"? I wouldnt' say that. I'd say you have the human tendency toward tribalism, and a healthy, functioning amygdala. The fact that you can even address the question rationally means you are more awake than the average person, white or black. Take pride in that, and simply commit to being the best person you can be. The rest follows naturally, in time.

great, level headed informative comments the whole race thing especially in film is something that has always bothered me in the simplest terms, its merely the mind is nothing more than an extremely advanced computing device, and can thusly be programmed through very subtle and not so subtle means, whether the person is aware of it or not (most racists grow up in racists households and/or communities, which provide the racism "program")...others, as in most everyone else, are indirectly programmed through repetitious racially divided entertainment; movies, TV, video games, music videos, etc, which very subtley and subversively program the mind over time...its why you have the urge to eat after seeing a fast food commercial. the sad thing is, most people aren't even aware this is happening and aren't even cognizant when they make bigoted and/or racist comments...they're merely playing out the program that's been installed in them. but the will supercedes all... and even if someone is programmed, they can consciously choose to ignore it, even though psychologically and physiologically they're urged to play out the program...The Matrix movies go into this heavily. it helps to view all this racist stuff coldly and matter of factly through technical metaphor because it helps to disengage the programs, as they are not whole you really are...ever say to yourself "why am i doing this?"...who is the one asking the's not the programming.

    Correlation doesn’t equal causation, hipshot.

    by frank

Example: cities with more Applebee’s restaurants also have more annual murders. Does this mean that eating at Applebee’s makes people homicidal? Possibly, but it is more likely that both values are a function of the cities’ population sizes. Let’s look at the case of movies with non-white males in sex scenes not making over 100 million dollars. First of all, most movies that make a lot of money are rated PG-13 and tend not to have sex scenes. Also, most movies feature white males as the main protagonists. This might be kind of racist in itself, but also it might be a function of the demographics that make up the moviegoing populace. Either way, if you combine the facts that most high grossing movies star white guys and don’t have sex scenes, it is not that surprising that there aren’t any very high grossing movies with black or asian men in sex scenes. It seems kind of foolish to think that significant numbers of people are staying away from movies because they feature a black guy in a sex scene. It is unlikely that most would even be aware of that fact before they saw the movie, unless the sex scene were in the preview or something. I think it is a lot more believable that a significant number of white people wouldn’t be as interested in seeing a movie featuring a non-white protagonist. I am not saying there isn’t some racism involved in determining which movies are successful, but I think you re being kind of paranoid in the particular conclusions you have drawn from the stats you cited.

  • April 13, 2011, 5:03 p.m. CST

It doesn't even have to be a sex scene...

    by Huey_Freemans_afro

Just kissing, making out or implied sex between a non-white male and white female is treated as a taboo. Or the characters are depicted as slutty or dislikable in some way. Hell, if you feature more than just a couple of token minorities, your movie will be considered a "black/ethnic/urban" movie. This is nothing new.

    by Hipshot

You didn't read my comments carefully. I am totally aware that correlation doesn't mean causality. I ask you to wonder if there might be a reason you didn't want to hear what I'm saying. Here it is: in movies that earn over 100 million dollars, approximately 22-23% have love scenes. Approximately 20% of such movies have non-white leads. 100% of the sex scenes, however, are with the white leads. Now: your statement about most of them being PG-13 is totally irrelevant: I gave the percentage of those that did, and films like AVATAR and TITANIC fit nicely, as does every Bond movie, and about 100 others (closer to 80, really, but you get the point). The fact that "most of these films have white stars"--uh...didn't you catch the part where I said that about 20% of them had non-white stars? I'm not saying more of them should have white stars. I'm not saying more of them should have sex. I said that there is this weird statistical blip, where ONLY those with white stars get to cross that line and have nookie. And by the way: the reactions of white heterosexual males is totally consistent: denial, attempts to find counter examples, looking at the facts themselves, and then either try to blame those darn liberal racist movie executives, or simply not replying. The question is: why the statistical blip? Why out of the 80 or so movies with sex that passed the 100 million mark, are not 20% of them or about 16, featuring non-white stars as do the rest of that group? I present the statistics, which are inarguable. I then present my THEORY, clearly stated as such: that unconscious tribalism, present in ALL human beings, creates this slight aversion that makes people say: "eh...I don't like that movie. It's just not good" at least partially because almost NO ONE will admit, publicly at least, to being racist any more, although clearly it is part of the human psyche. That implies that it might be difficult for people to even admit it to themselves. All it would take is what I call a "10% disconnect" to males of the "other" group to create the phenomenon. One can either ignore the data, or try to come up with a better theory. Mine has the elegance of predictive capacity: for thirty years I've been able to predict box office pretty damned well. this "10% disconnect" would explain so much, world wide, in politics, violence, economics, incarceration's amazing how much of the world makes sense if you simply realize "tribalism" is still with us, driving unconscious decision making. Remember: about 80 movies have had sex and still earned over 100 million. About 20% of 100 million plus films had non-white stars. Not one of the sexual movies had a black or Asian male star gettin' jiggy. I've presented my stats, reasoning, and theory. I would love to hear yours. Trust me: black stars WANT to do it. I've talked with many of them, and the story is consistent: this is one of the ugliest open secrets in Hollywood, and it's changing very slowly indeed.

movies make lots of money based on word of mouth or people like it so much they keep going... or both now a black man kissing or having sex with a white woman makes audiences uncomfortable, this is pretty much a fact, and often people will NOT like a movie and not even know the reason...its often subliminal (sub par acting, bad camera work, grating soundtrack, plot holes, black man with white woman, lol) so if these people were uncomfortable during the sex or kissing scene between the black man and white woman, they may hesitate to recommend it to their friends because they may not want to be known as someone who condones interracial love, or they know their friend doesn't like it, or recommendations or pans are completely subjective, but the common denominator cannot be ignored (ie, interracial) and since movies rely on word of mouth and/or repeat viewing to be successful, you can see why interracial love might get in the way of that.

You are right, I didn’t read your initial post thoroughly enough. I still doubt that non-white sex is the impetus for keeping people away from the theaters, though. My theory is that white people disproportionally go to see movies featuring white lead actors, regardless of whether or not the movies contain sex. In which case racism is still the underlying explanation. I would be interested to know the timeline of when particular 100 mil+ movies were released. It seems to me that the amount of sex in popular movies has decreased in recent years, while the number of movies starring non-white actors has increased. If that is the case, then it may be that the higher grossing movies containing sex were released before black people started playing a very prominent role in blockbuster movies, which I would say occurred in the 90’s really. That is just conjecture though, I havent researched the matter. Briefly looking on boxofficemojo at the top 20 highest grossing R rated movies, I see that only Beverly Hills Cop features an African-American lead.

studios dont allow interracial sex scenes...

    by Billy_D_Williams

because they know it will effect box office. this was admitted in the book The Man Who Heard Voices (the Night Shyamalan book)...i cant remember the page, but it was after Disney and Night had their spat, and he took Lady in the Water to Warners...he went to meet alan horn and jeff robinov, and they had the same discussion we are.

I wish it were a non-issue in real life, but...

    by Huey_Freemans_afro

Americans are still skiddish on the subject. People stare in the street and squirm in private. I've seen it all my life. Recently a survey said that 40% or so of the people in Mississippi would like to make interracial marriage illegal again. (Or maybe it was just the ppl who identified with certain affiliations) So Hollywood/television still tries to "play it safe" with regard to miscegenation.

You seem a thoughtful guy. But your idea that maybe it has something to do with the year is just...wrong. Really. Do a year by year comparison. It doesn't matter. Most of the sex in 100 mil plus films is PG-13 stuff. If I were you, I'd ask why it is so difficult to believe that human beings are still tribal, when we can see the evidence of it everywhere in the world. Seriously--I'm not asking you to think that white people are evil, or more bigoted than anyone else. But if you need more convincing, sort by year. Do anything you want. There is no escape, guy. this is something I've been looking at for a long, long time. Doubt all you want, but the deeper you look, the more you'll see I've done my homework on this one.

Sure there's interracial sex onscreen. But unless its white guys with women of other groups, it will be in tiny movies that suck at the box office.

Your hypothesis may be correct, hipshot

    by frank

but I don’t think the data available are sufficient to say that conclusively. In other words, I don’t think your assertion would stand up to scientific scrutiny. Certainly the phenomenon you brought up is interesting and worth discussing, but I’m reluctant to use that information as the sole basis for accepting the conclusion that white people tend specifically to avoid movies that contain non-white actors in sex scenes as a direct result of the inclusion of such scenes. I think it is also possible that the relationship between lower box office sales and non-white sex scenes is not causal and that there are one or more related factors that influence both of these variables. Which of these possibilities is more likely, I can’t say. You would really need to do some sort of experiment, like releasing two versions of the same movie, one of which has an added sex scene, in several different regions of the country with similar demographic compositions and seeing if one version has significantly different sales from the other. You would also need a control movie that was released in identical form in all the regions in order to establish a baseline for ticket sales in each area. Really you would want to have several experimental films and several control films of varying genres for increased statistical significance. I don’t think I am being racist here. I would have the same reservations if we were drawing conclusions about viruses or real estate or french fries. Especially french fries.

    by Bobo_Vision

And I doubt most people did, either. That movie was marketed really poorly. But I suspect hipshot is ultimately right. Franks_television raises good points and is right in the sense that you have less films with non-white lead actors....yet in the films where non-whites take the lead.....the masses don't want to watch them pork anybody. <p> Will Smith can travel to other planets and kill aliens...just as long as he doesn't insert his penis into anybody's vagina. Martin Lawrence can dress up in drag with his son....just as long as they don't insert their penis into anyone. Juwanna Mann can.....well you get the point.

idk if anyone has ever seen this old fliq The Lover, starring Jane March (a.k.a. the chick that was penetrated by Bruce Willis in Color of Night). It's a movie about this white French chick in some azn country, I thinq China and her being seduced by this wealthy Chinese dude and the complications that arise from their races and the fact that she's underage. I think it was the girl's actual memoirs or something. Anyway it was never supposed to be a blockbuster but I thought it was a decent story. Check it out if not for the drama but for Jane March gettin lover-ized.

You say: "but I’m reluctant to use that information as the sole basis for accepting the conclusion that white people tend specifically to avoid movies that contain non-white actors in sex scenes as a direct result of the inclusion of such scenes." That's close, but not exactly what I'm saying. I'm saying that human beings have a slight disconnect with those they consider "other." That racial lines are one of those "other" categories. That therefore those of ANY group will have a slight aversion to films that feature those others, on average. That this really jumps out when those others are presented as competitors for survival, or reproduction (cock-blockers). This results in a mild disconnect, a sense of "I'm not comfortable, and I don't know why" which leads to unhappiness with the script or...whatever. It isn't "non white actors" (as a gender neutral term) but rather, specifically male-male competition that is the worst here. Perhaps that was what you meant. I'm quite certain that it would be better, scientifically, to perform the experiment you suggest, but there have been plenty of experiments showing an instinctive amygdalic response to facial characteristics of "the other" in human beings. Not much of an extrapolation to think about things like black guys dying first (a thankfully outdated trope) or, now, black men presented as sexless and non-cock-blockers, while still having black women sexually available to white men. While you're right about the scientific thing, I'm not interested in expending large amounts of time and energy there. My thought experiment will suffice: if I am correct, I should be able to predict the success or failure of movies IN THE FUTURE based upon their sexual content. If the hero is white, the boxoffice will be average for that performer's films. If the hero is black, the boxoffice will drop, relative to that performer's films. For thirty years or so, I've been watching this, and it's worked like a charm. ## As for the question of blacks and sex, and why people on this board are "obsessed" with it: I am not. It never comes up unless some white talkbacker first mentions race in a derogatory fashion, and I merely respond, suggesting that such anger and venom are hard wired, using the sexual stats as evidence. Don't like it? Don't go there.

"black men presented as sexless and non-cock-blockers"

    by Bobo_Vision

I think that's precisely why a shitty franchise like Big Momma's House is able to thrive and find an audience with both whites and blacks....because there's something pleasing and non-threatening about a castrated black man to white audiences. Tyler Madea is constantly in drag, too. <p> Dave Chappelle tells a great story (I think it was on Inside The Actor's Studio) about how when he was filming Blue Streak with Martin Lawrence....some of the studio folks approached him and told him it would be really funny if he wore a dress and wig in a scene. It wasn't in the script and it wasn't necessary to the film, they just wanted it....and Chappelle stood his ground and said he wasn't doing it. <p> I think Chappelle probably has a lot of stories like that which is why he's so jaded and pretty much retired from the biz.

  • when it's Marlon Wayans in drag.
