This is why I love Michael Shannon. See him talk about Zod!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I'm a big, big fan of Zack Snyder casting Michael Shannon as Zod. Well, to be fair I'm a big fan of Michael Shannon being cast in any movie... the dude's one of my favorite working character actors, the rare guy who can be the best two minute walk-on performance in a giant movie or the one that carries from beginning to end. His lead performance in Take Shelter, which I saw at Sundance, is unbelievable. So good. But he's also the best part about Revolutionary Road.

Anyway, I'm excited. This dude is great, he's a great choice for a heavy in a Superman movie and now some video appeared online of him speaking about how he got Superman. Seems like a dude you could just shoot the shit with and he wouldn't be worried about dressing everything up politically if you know what I mean. Hope you guys enjoy this brief video of Michael Shannon discussing Man of Steel and Zod.

    But I don't want Zod

    by Ghostpirate

Not yet anyway. Can't we have another villain we haven't seen yet?

  • April 12, 2011, 12:44 a.m. CST

    Richard Kiel

    by nolan bautista

    the teen years

  • April 12, 2011, 12:52 a.m. CST

    I am optimistic about this....

    by tommyleespenis

I think Shannon is great and I am looking forward to see what he does with ZOD....This is coming from a guy who absolutely hated the idea of another Zod film....Plus, I wonder what the Zod Costume will look like, definitely not a disco suit

  • April 12, 2011, 12:54 a.m. CST

    He sounds drunk though

    by tommyleespenis

But he sounds like a cool dude..

  • April 12, 2011, 12:55 a.m. CST

    But can he say

    by Vindibudd

KNEEL BEFORE ZOD? He'd probably say, "Hey dude, can you kinda maybe kneel, for just a little bit maybe?"

  • April 12, 2011, 12:57 a.m. CST

    Always creeps me out..

    by ShogunMaster

when men sit with their legs crossed knee over knee. Just comes off as so feminine. I hope this guy is good, but without the euro accent, Zod isn't going to seem all that intimidating..

  • April 12, 2011, 1:04 a.m. CST

It's hard to get my head around anyone other than TERRANCE STAMP.

    by DoctorWho?

I would love to have seen long stretches of dialogue between him and Reeve.
Hope this guy can reinvent the role well.

  • April 12, 2011, 1:10 a.m. CST

And don't touch URSA! Sarah Douglas is a minx in that role.

    by DoctorWho?

    I'm sure you'd agree.

  • April 12, 2011, 1:24 a.m. CST

    he could pull it off...

    by nolan bautista

he was good in "Lets Go to Prison"..he's got that "pissed off at the world" look that could work well in a character like Zod

  • April 12, 2011, 1:26 a.m. CST

    This guy...

    by vettebro

Doesn't fit the role of Zod to me. Zod is an egotistical power hungry megalomaniac. This guy looks like one of those pillow head, stoned guys you see in B movies. A poor man's Jim Brewer if you will. Seriously...General Zod? I don't see it.

  • April 12, 2011, 1:36 a.m. CST

I really think they could reinvent Zod

    by Larry Sellers

into something way more complex and interesting than they did with Superman II. This guy seems alright, and I think there's a reason they're confident enough to reuse the character. But SHOULD they? No. The whole angle when they were considering the Returns sequel was that they wanted more action, a physical villain...Zod provides that. But they ought to try to wow the audience with something they haven't seen before. Build up to Zod with some minor alien villains. I know that's not happening, and this movie will probably be way better than I'm anticipating...I'm just disappointed.

  • April 12, 2011, 1:37 a.m. CST

If I want to see Zod in action...

    by justmyluck

... I'll watch the Superman II DVD, otherwise not much interest in Zod v.2 after LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS and SUCKER PUNCH. No offense to Shannon; I'm sure he's got the chops for a baddie, and a lot of kids won't know Stamp's performance, anyway.

  • April 12, 2011, 1:38 a.m. CST

Yes, doctor who?, Sarah is a minx..

    by kisskissbangbang

...but the type who just wants to hold hands.

  • April 12, 2011, 1:41 a.m. CST

I'm just so glad that they're FINALLY getting away from the Reeve films

    by Margot Tenenbaum

by using a villain that was primarily created for them. BUT WAIT THIS AIN'T MY DADDY'S GENERAL ZOD. They're going to have him do something brutally sadistic to one or more of the Superman supporting characters so they can have an enraged Superman with glowing red heat vision eyes. Then we can have 90 minutes of CG cartoons throwing fake train cars at each other with Superman WASTING Zod at the end. FUCK YEAH

  • I'm curious as to what he can do with the role. Loved the comment about the studio wanting to know if they have 'chemistry'. Either leave the director and his team to make the movie or make it yourselves. Bet directors on Fox movies get that every day.

  • April 12, 2011, 1:45 a.m. CST

    not impressed

    by Raskolnikov_was_framed

I like him as an actor I guess but I've never heard him speak out of character before...he sounds like every film school reject I went to school with...just a complete zero who backed into some kind of career...damn if I didn't love his work I'd have ZERO faith in his ability to pull this off

  • April 12, 2011, 1:48 a.m. CST

70+ years of stories and they can't come up with anything new.

    by Monkeybrains

    Really, really unbelievable.

Everyone can keep sucking this guy's dick...

    by Dr. Egon Spengler

Over how great an actor he is, but it's not going to make me want Zod in a new Superman movie anymore than I wanted him in one yesterday, today, or tomorrow. Give us Brainiac!

  • April 12, 2011, 2 a.m. CST

We sure he's playing Zod and not Non?

    by Chuck_Chuckwalla

Because he sure looks like Non to me.

  • April 12, 2011, 2:09 a.m. CST

Totally lacks the presence Terence Stamp had ...

Could be brilliant could be shite ... time will tell. Me, I would have begged William Fichtner to do it.

  • April 12, 2011, 2:09 a.m. CST

    WTF? ZOD?

    by RobertoInfiniteTHEMoonLander

I have to agree with all of the people who are bitching about ZOD being the villain in the new Superman movie. No more rehashing shit! Give us Brainiac! Metallo! DARKSEID! We really don't need to see Zod again.

  • April 12, 2011, 2:12 a.m. CST

    Shannon's a great actor, BUT...

    by Billy_D_Williams

as Zod??? this could be terrible miscasting.

    Is Shannon the new Walken?

    by force_fed

I mean... the speech pattern isn't AS jazzed, but damn he's hard to peg down. Ima start practicing just in case.

  • All you new directors, Singer ! Snyder ! Nolan ! Bow to Richard Donner ! He is again proven to be the Man of all Superman films. Everything must stem from the holy grail of all Superman films. Ah. so next thing they're going to change is the costume to GET AWAY from STM as the primary objective. Don't change the costume dammit. Donner didn't invent the costume. He made it true to the source material.

  • April 12, 2011, 2:39 a.m. CST

    No doubt.

    by Joh Doe

Michael Shannon'll smash it. The guy interviewing him was a knob. Why can't he imagine him watching Superman? Not much of a stretch is it? And he horribly misuses the word genius. Tool.

Shannon seems like an odd duck, but a cool dude at the same time. This clip shows what a tremendous actor he is. Very different in life than he is in Boardwalk Empire for instance.

  • April 12, 2011, 2:53 a.m. CST

You sure this guy isn't going to play Otis???

    by TheGhostWhoLurks

'Cause it seemed like he was going to belt out "Mistah Lu-thaw" any second. The guy's like the ANTI-Zod. At least Terrence Stamp's coolio version. Which doesn't bode well to me... :(

  • April 12, 2011, 3 a.m. CST

    Cos he sounds ...

    by OhWhatTheFeckEver

... drunk or laid back in the clip, you think he'll play Zod that way?!? It's called 'acting'! Most (not all, but most) actors don't play parts as themselves. Bitch about his portrayal when you've seen it, ffs!

  • April 12, 2011, 3:51 a.m. CST

    Lex Luthor

    by Henry Fool

I never bought how Lex Luthor was such a lapdog to Zod in Superman II, still my favorite Superman film after all these years. They should have had Lex using kryptonite to control the Krypton refugees. I can live without Lex Luthor. I hated the last Superman movie so I pretty much want to distance myself from memories of that as much as possible.

I just hope Snyder doesn't pen the script himself. He's a good director who doesn't quite of the chops. Dawn of the Dead, 300 and Watchmen were all works that were considerably flawed, although highly watchable.

  • April 12, 2011, 4:02 a.m. CST

He just seems so wrong for the role of Zod.

    by Johnny Wishbone

I don't have very high hopes for this film.

  • April 12, 2011, 4:23 a.m. CST

Zod does not exist in this dojo

    by Cobra--Kai

Seems to me this guys impressed everyone as a supporting actor or a character actor... Is that because he utterly lacks charisma or gravitas? Cos that's the way he seems. More of a wimpy William H Macy type - long fucking way from Terence Stamp. Poor casting imho. I was hoping for Daniel Craig!

  • April 12, 2011, 4:27 a.m. CST

    by Cobra--Kai

"This is why I love Michael Shannon. See him talk about Zod!" Cos he prattles on in a stoned meandering way about not being able to turn air conditioning off? Quint, 'this' is why you love him?!

  • April 12, 2011, 4:33 a.m. CST

    He'll make a GREAT Zod

    by HelmetBoy

But I also think he'd have made a fantastic Luthor. Whoever get's cast as Lex is going to have their work cut out being more intimidating than Shannon. Terrance Stamp s a legend, but I never really believed he could kick Christopher Reeves Ass. With Shannon cast in the role I think Cavill is going to have to watch his arse... That sounds perverted.

  • April 12, 2011, 4:54 a.m. CST

but can he act in slow motion???

    by vulturess

i like shannon since i saw him in bug but not enough to make me want to see this. this superman sounds like a platinum dunes friday 13th remash remake.

Every hateful comment here is unmerited

    by NateHawg

This guy has done nothing but shine on screen in every roll he's ever taken. Shannon is a dynamic character actor amongst an exceptional cast. Zod is fantastic villian we've seen ONCE. Over 3 decades ago. Enjoy being haters, ya bunch of goddamn trolls. I for one am just looking forward to enjoying a fun Superman movie. I guess fun is just too much to hope for.

  • April 12, 2011, 5:25 a.m. CST

    No, no, no...

    by kubricksnutsack

This guy is no more Zod than I am. I am sure he is a fine actor, but it is going to be a hard to wrench the role away from Terence Stamp. The big question is whether or not they'll get him to play Zod as a menacing Englishman or a New York bum. "Hey Supes, get on ya knees and suck on dees potatoes, buddy..." It's going to stink, isn't it?

  • April 12, 2011, 5:48 a.m. CST

Looks like a young Stacey Keach there

    by DirkD13"

He has a lifetime pass for the awesome that is Agent Val Alden. I really don't get why people are bitching about him acting "stoned-like" (I smoke a lot of weed, this guy aint stoned at all). He just seems like a mellow, down-to-earth guy who just happens to be the shit when it comes to acting. Stamp is obviously great as Zod, but do you seriously think that nobody else could do it just as well but different? I agree with the people who say "great actor, but let's have a new villain please".

  • April 12, 2011, 6 a.m. CST

    Not Zod?

    by huskerdu2

He's a good actor and a physical presence. Last thing you want is a Stamp clone. It'd be terrible.

  • April 12, 2011, 6:33 a.m. CST

    Zod is a cheaper villian

    by Rik J.

I bet choosing Zod over somebody like Braniac, Metallo, or Doomsday is a budget choice. Not a lot of CG animation and effects goes into Zod other than his fight or flight scenes. The rest of the villains in the Superman mythos, would cost a lot of bank to bring to the screen. Until WB is willing to back a Superman proper, we are getting stuck with Lex and Zod.

  • April 12, 2011, 6:40 a.m. CST

Zack Snyder always has fantastic casts...

    by Mickster_Island

...Whether you loved or hated 'Sucker Punch' you have to admit that the casting of Oscar Isaac as the orderly/mob boss was ingenious. He was unknown but familiar, so his creepiness was able to reach a pitch of intensity that if he were just familiar, he wouldn't have had; if he were unknown you wouldn't have ever wondered if he was safe. And Scott Glenn: what the hell? That was excellent! Emily Browning as Babydoll was inspired. She's not sexy because she's got curves or is showing us everything. She's sexy because there's just something about Browning that is mesmerizing. Snyder, or whoever is doing his casting, is fantastic. (And don't forget the casts of 300 (Lena Headey), Watchmen (Jackie Earle Haley), and Dawn of the Dead (Sarah freaking Polley).)

    Girlie leg crossing?

    by BizarroJerry

C'mon, folks, Stamp in his little goatee and glittery disco suit wasn't exactly the most masculine character. And saying that a guy's real personality means he's not a good choice? That seems as silly as assuming DeNiro is a bad actor because you can barely get him to speak in an interview. It really annoys me that so many people have no imagination, and can't picture Zod as acting any way other than Stamp in Superman II. Especially after all the bitching about the laast flick's adherence to Donner! And people wonder why the "fanboys" get such a bad reputation. It's just one interpretation, one performance. It's possible Shannon's version is going to be creepier, maybe some kind of cult-like leader. His acting on Boardwalk Empire, stone-faced, self-righteous, extreme religious attitude... maybe that's this screenwriter's version.

    The problem with Zod

    by Ghostpirate

Is that IF he is the main villain then it would impact the way the world sees and embraces Superman. By the time Zod comes along the world has fallen in love with Superman and really come to depend on him. Then this other superpowered guy comes along and shows what would happen if the powers were used for evil. Superman's first outings on Earth should be about him, being this unique, super powered person, stepping up and saving the world. That's it. It should be about him, not him fighting another person who is like him. That should be saved for another film. Hopefully he isn't the main villain, but rather, he is just being introduced before Krypton gets destroyed. Maybe that's why they went with a lesser name. It's easier to get them to do a small part and wait in the wings until another movie.

    Bored now.

    by REPSMAN

Zod ... again. Ugh. How unimaginative of the WB as usual. How can they get Batman so right in this new iteration and fuck up Supes so bad? Enough of this "going back to the well" nonsense. Yes, Superman 2 was great (Except for the giant seran wrap "S" symbol) — but let's move on already. You would think they might have learned something after Singer's debacle. Luthor and his land schemes was tired enough. Now rumors of Ms. Teschmacher making a return? Double ugh. Actually, I don't even care if there is Lex Luthor in this train wreck at all. Definitely don't need Zod or any other Kryptonians. Here's a whacky idea — why not check out the last 30 years of the comics and see if you can get an idea from those. God, I hope the final product's got polar bears and giant robot spiders. Oh, and if they do have Lex (and you know the WB will comply — with every Superman film), they better get the casting right. Fuck Billy Zane, he can't act worth shit. JASON ISSACS (The Patriot) in the ONLY choice for Luthor. Best Casting EVER!

  • April 12, 2011, 9:21 a.m. CST

    Stamp's Zod seems a bit...theatrical? in retrospect

    by darthderp

Next time you're watching Supes 2, listen to some of his delivery. Not to say the man's hamming it up, but he's definitely chewing a bit of the scenery. Probably just having a good time with the role, perhaps. To do it different, maybe this Zod will just be a cold-blooded SOB who would rather rip out Kal-El's heart instead of making him kneel in servitude.

    Fuck zod

    by redkamel

He's a lame villain. In Superman II, ok I get it he's fine. Good choice for a sequel. But for a reboot I would think you want a mysterious, intellectual, powerful villain (ie braniac, darkseid etc) or a cool fun adventure (the 1940s serials come to mind. Zod is just a boring villain...essentially an evil superman. Not too tough to figure out this scenes.

You dumb short sighted bitches hate everything...

    by thecomedian

This guy may look like a life-sized Christopher Walken bobblehead but he's one of the best fucking villains you'll ever see on Boardwalk Empire and he was the only good thing about The Runaways where he was also basically the villain. You short sighted bitches need to sit down and have a nice warm cup of shut the fuck up with marshmallows. The only problem for me about this casting is that as awesome as he will be as Zod he'd probably make a 100 times better Lex Luthor, the evil scientific genius/sociopath Morrison did in All Star Superman mixed with a bits of Byrne's "Evil Donald Trump" bit from the 80's (not some idiot real estate hustler who lives in the sewers.) He'll be a great Zod though because at least he'll make the character his own. Personally I always wanted Jude Law for the new Zod and Helena Bonham Carter for Ursa but they'd really just be copies of Stamp and Sara Douglas. I'll be glad to see a fresh take. General Zod is an awesome villain. Donner's real intent that got fucked when Richard Lester took over was to show how dangerous this guy is. I mean he came very close to taking over Krypton in a military coup without Superpowers so how much more fucking dangerous would he be with them. Plus it puts a darker more realistic spin on how the world would view Superman. If Zod shows up 1st and then this boy scout in a red cape from the same planet shows up second and kicks his ass people would be quite so trusting of Superman. He'd have to earn the world's trust with Luthor trying to convince the rest of the world that he's a threat. Yeah, it's kind of like turning Superman into Spider-Man but not completely.

  • April 12, 2011, 11:14 a.m. CST

    No Zod!

    by bat725

Are you listening to the fans, WB? You think the backlash from the Vulture on Spidey 4 was bad? NOBODY WANTS TO SEE ZOD!!! Bring Brainiac, Luthor with his armor, Doomsday, Darkseid, Bizarro, Conduit, or Mongul. I know Superman doesn't have the strongest rogue gallery, but he has a good 6 or 7 villains that can make an action-packed Superman movie trilogy easily. Come to think of it, most super-heroes only have about 6-7 good villains in their stable, so I don't see what all the talk is about regarding the lack of good Superman villains. I have absolutely no faith in this movie (especially after Sucker Punch) with the announcement of an origin redo and Zod as the villain. I'm telling you now, expect the worst for the costume.

Zack Snyder. After seeing Sucker Punch tonight, I fear the Man of Steel is doomed! Snyder's previous efforts, flawed as they've been, weren't total disappointments for me. At least they entertained to one degree or another. But Sucker Punch? Sheer fanboy pandering - nothing more. It easily ranks as one of the most pointless movies I've ever seen, and after watching it, all I can say is, "In Snyder, I do NOT trust!"

    this TB is funny

    by HongKongCavalier

I'm a comic fan who has problem saying: I've always found Superman boring. I just found an indestructible superhero boring. Yeah, I know there's the Kryptonite (and the Crayola Box varieties that affect him in different ways) and his weakness to magic ... but that put extreme limits on what could pose a threat to him. Yeah, I'm also aware that he was given this "Guardian of Earth" complex in order to give him a non-physical weakness; but, imo, it wasn't enough. I guess that's my way of saying this casting doesn't bother me because Shannon IS a good actor (and for those twits complaining about his accent/speech pattern, go look up a Bob Hoskins interview then compare it to most of his roles). I want a superhero where you (at least) think there's a chance he might lose or even get seriously hurt (e.g. Bane breaking Batman's spine) If they do it correctly, since it's the Origins Episode, Green Lantern will be have problems with the color Yellow because it's not until LATER that he learns *SPOILER*) ... and I dunno what to think about there not being a Donald Blake in Thor. Anyway, I honestly (i.e., non-troll believe) that since there have been SO many Superman movies already AND Smallville has been running for so many years, there's NO NEED to do a conventional Superman movie (and absolutely NO REASON to re-introduce characters already introduced) Go a different route ... go Legion We already know JLA is coming soon, so why not use the Superman solo movies to introduce non-JLA characters? meh ... *kanye shrug* doesn't really matter, just sayin'

    Villians in Smallville...

    by I AM ROCKO

...I appreciate I am going to flamed alive on this talkback for being a fan of Smallville, however I have to say that despite flaws the show has managed to have Luthor, Metallo, Doomsday, Brainiac, Darkseid, Zod, Toyman and others as bad guys. If a TV show can be creative with the magnitude of Superman's foes then I cannot understand why the latest features cannot. If they are going to do Zod, they should have just made a direct sequel to Superman Returns. This film sounds like a condensed version of Smallville anyway. This will not outgross Superman Returns. Mark my words.

Smallville, despite being an entertaining popcorn TV show

by Super Joker a load of deeply flawed, cliched, cheesy shit most of the time and almost every villain in it has been translated into a somewhat-laughable version of the comic. Smallville's version of Doomsday was more in line with something from Twilight.
