The Eternal Bruise gives us some dish on the new SHAFT film!

Published at:  Dec 29, 1999 4:56:58 PM CST

Folks, here's just a tad of the plotline of the upcoming SHAFT movie starring Samuel L Jackson, absolute god of cool wandering the earth, and directed by John Singleton... eh, he's cool too. Maaaaan, I can't wait to hear ol Isaac Hayes, the Black Moses of Soul, in SDDS Dolby Digital THX Boom diddly BANG sound system! Here's the EB....

Hey Harry. I'm not sure if any of this info will be interesting, but I've
come across some plot information on the remake of Shaft, starring Samuel L.
Jackson. It seems that this movie will completely avoid any "camp" aspects
of the movie, and try to make it serious. They're keeping the original
score, of course, but I believe the plot has changed a lot. The movie starts
out with a white guy and a black guy arguing. They end up in a fight, and
the white guy kills the black guy. This is witnessed by a waitress. John
Shaft is the detective for the case, and the white guy flees the country.
Then the movie flashes forward 2 years, when Shaft is now a private dick (who
is, of course, a sex machine with all the chicks). He is obsessed with the
murder, it's been eating him up for two years. The white guy has to come
back into the country to commit a crime, so Shaft takes this opportunity to
"even the score", so to speak. That's all the plot info I have.
I also know there are also a lot of car crashes in the movie. Hope it was
some help.

Till next time - the Eternal Bruise

This movie is in serious trouble.

    by i love fox!

They're overschedule, overbudget, and the script stinks. Jackson hates Singleton because, surprise, he's a lousy director. Rudin hates Singleton, too, but Rudin hates a lot of people. Word around town is that this is shaping up to be a major disaster that'll have to be saved, if it can be saved at all, in the editing room. Maybe a few more car crashes will do the trick.

  • Uhhh... Maybe I'm pointing out the obvious here, but Richard Roundtree is still alive and would make the perfect Shaft. He's done it before, you know. If Tarantino can put Pan Grier in the spotlight again, why not let him take a crack at Shaft with the original sex machine to all the chicks?

    What,that's it?Aw,c'mon.There's gotta be more than that.Where's the hit'm up fights?Where's the explosions??Where's the jive talk,like,"They were expecting a normal dick,they got shaft-UP TA HERE!!"Where's the girls? Where's the action??Where's the sex?!!Where's the blatant racism??!!??!!?!Oh,well yeah,it's there,but i was on a roll.A white guy murdering a black guy is pretty Syd Field-esque.I cxertainly hope that's just a very,VERY simplified outline.

    Hong Kong Fooey: 2000!

    by yar's revenge

Word is that there are some development hold-ups with the updated version of the seminal martial arts classic, Hong Kong Fooey. After a bitter dispute with Dudley Do-Right director, Hugh Wilson, the director's chair has been offered Evil Dead-head Sam Raimi. But after a lackluster script and multiple rewrites, the gritty Kung Fu adventure is mired in development hell. "I want to do this as long as we are faithful to the source," commented Raimi, "If we do this, it's going to be a serious film. I'm not one to put out some cornball send-up of the original. At the very core, this is a movie about a down-and-out janitor dog who is also a number-one-superguy! I don't want to put out some schlocky retread. I mean, this isn't freakin' Grape Ape we're talking about!"
In an effort to remain true to his source material, Raimi promises that the film will feature the original score from the television program.

    The White Guy

...spoken of in the above post is being played by Christian Bale, who is also playing the title role in "American Psycho". Both films should be in arthouse and mall theatres, respectively, within weeks of each other this summer.

    Richard Price's Shaft script

    by stax

This brief scoop corresponds with the plot of the Richard Price draft from 11/98 that I read and covered at my site FlixBurg months ago. This version of SHAFT will NOT be a satire of the 70s like so many remakes or "updates" seem to be now. If you wanna know some more, then read the script review at: http://welcome.to/flixburg. Thanks AICN and Happy New Year.

    don't write it off yet

Shaft was the first "blaxploitation" flick... was the first movie that exploitive? a black man, a private investigator, playing both sides of the law while protecting himself and old friends. Who had sex with 2 women. 2 chicks, one white, one black. it was a filim, I believe, that took itself fairly seriously. the camp of dolemite and superfly was to come later. Price, and hopefully the director and producers do too, recognize the somber tone the first film had. I eagerly read richard price's draft and was pleased as punch to discover a very engaging story. Shaft COULDN'T be an anachronstic misogynist he-slut nowadays. it fit the time back then. but not now. I had misgivings about jackson, love him though I do, but he will serve the script, and if all goes well, his backup, geoffrey wright as villian A christian bale (perfect-PERFECT) as villian b. and roundtree reprises his character as the original john shaft--the titular character this time is his nephew. looking forward to it!

    Shaft Remake?

    by cassius the evil

Well... uh... whatever. Just make sure you get Sam Jackson in front of a camera as often as possible. The guy is just... sooo cool. Hell, I'd go see a remake of *Ishtar* if he was in it, and goddammit, that's saying something!

    Trouble

    by the guy

I pray to God, that the Richard Price draft I read recently is not the one they ended up shooting. To put it bluntly, it friggin sucked.

The worst part, was that God awful dialogue. Uuggh! Shaft's dialogue isn't that bad, but Peoples Hernandez( what a fucking name), and Rasaan have some of the worst lines I've ever read. I now know why John Leguizamo dropped out of this film.

I don't know Richard Price's ethnic background, but the dialogue seems like it was written by an old White guy, trying to write ethnic. Or an old Black guy, who's just out of touch.

Who's the cop that won't cop out when there's danger all about?

    by lester diamond

What's all this jive about SHAFT not being fly? This film will be super-duper-cool. Come on. It's got Sam! It has to be good! Wait--that's what I said about AMOS & ANDREW. Well, this will probably be cool. Even if the movie itself isn't up to snuff, SLJ will be a badass. I can't wait to hear those Shaft lines. An underrated Sam gem: "Hold on. You're a sexy white woman. I'm a black man. And I ain't been blown since candy cost a quarter."
Everybody always remembers SHAFT and SUPERFLY but what about THE MACK? I love that flick. The most underrated blaxploitation movie.

    by dmodog

Isaac Hayes is a scientologist, just thought you'd like to know.

And if Isaac Hayes thinks scientology's cool, that's all I god damn well need.

Also, hip hop genius of the 70's and 80's Doug E. Fresh is also a scientologist.
