Have You Been To THE TREE OF LIFE Website Yet?

Published at: April 8, 2011, 11:08 p.m. CST by Nordling

Nordling here.

After SUPER 8, this is my most anticipated film of the summer.  Terrence Malick's THE TREE OF LIFE, starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain, seems enigmatic and mysterious.  Ostensibly it's about a man (Sean Penn) dealing with his childhood and his overbearing father (Brad Pitt), but there's so much amazing imagery in the trailer and early reviews are comparing it to 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.  At this point, no one is quite sure what the film is about, and I love that.  A Malick film is always something to be celebrated, and as I'm a sentimental guy this film seems tailor-made for my sensibilities.

The website for the film is now live, at www.twowaysthroughlife.com and right off the bat we're given some of the amazing visuals of the film.  You can choose two paths on the site - The Father's Way and The Mother's Way, and each path has little snippets of scenes and images from the film.  Each scene has an intriguing title that doesn't reveal much - titles like "Our sun has become a white dwarf. A remnant of the earth trails behind it." or "All a chaos" or "They do not endure by maintaining their rigidity."  The scenes seem to have little or no dialogue.  For some this all may come across as pretentious, but for me it's fascinating.  I have no idea what to expect from this film, and that's just the way I like it.  THE TREE OF LIFE will be released this summer from Fox Searchlight.

Nordling, out.

This sounds like it will be an amazing film, and the trailer wasn't too shabby either.

"For some this all may come across as pretentious"....

    by Half-Baked-Goggle-Box-Do-Gooder

From what I've seen in my life, the people quickest to dismiss something as "pretentious" are the people most threatened by anything that isn't impressed by their conviction that they already know everything. Fuck the goggle-eyed, attention-deficited, hype-addled fanboys and crybabies who want the world - or at least Hollywood - to revolve around them. Malick rules. There will be some "entertainment" on our movie screens this summer, but there weill be very little art. This is the latter.

  • April 9, 2011, 7:36 a.m. CST

It looks like an amazing piece of film-making...

The Tree of Life: Not the future of movies.

    by James_Camera_On

    >After SUPER 8, this is my most anticipated film of the summer. Well, that was weak but at least Mr. Nordling didn't say: "After Transformers III, this is my most anticipated film of the summer." I believe those commentators who say "The Tree of Life" is going to bomb are probably correct. I'm resigned to the future of movies being Transformers III. While I obviously do not know, I have hopes, confidence actually, that "The Tree of Life" will be a great film. If it's boxoffice death, at least Malick tried. Abrahms, Bay, etc. never do and that is what the public increasingly wants.

    Anticipated?

    by Sithtastic

If it is, it'll be as a "sleeper" and I mean that to be kind. Summer really isn't the season for Malick, whose atmospheric and mood driven narrative is something of an acquired taste. I genuinely liked the New World, but I can see why a lot of people didn't. All this said, I really like what I've seen thus far and I look forward to what will no doubt a cerebral gem in a summer filled with blockbuster noise (all of which I will no doubt see, regardless).

    by starlesswinter7

Some of the comments on that website are just ridiculous. No one's seen more than a few out-of-context minutes of the film, and people are already literally calling it the best film ever made. Or how a 5 second clip brings out "serious, deep emotions in me". Please. Talk about hyperbole. I hate when people make up their minds before seeing anything.

  • If 2001 was released for the first time today it wouldnt be a very good movie. its too slow for an ADD ravaged society...and the technology is outdated. And there are simliar movies that are more entertaining. So that sounds about right. I expect Tree of Life to be slow, pointless, and irrelevant.

and I fucking quote, "If 2001 was released for the first time today it wouldnt be a very good movie. its too slow for an ADD ravaged society...and the technology is outdated. And there are simliar movies that are more entertaining." Let's just break that down piece by stupifying piece shall we? "If 2001 was released for the first time today it wouldnt be a very good movie." Maybe the most useless comment I have ever come across after over ten years at this troll-shack. So if a film regarded as the greatest sci-fi of all time and is noted for being pure cinema came out over 40 years later for the first time(????) you're saying it wouldn't be any good? Art is fucking art you feeble minded dolt. 2001 is STILL amazing today. The fact that you do not get it does not suprise me in the least. What does suprise me is that somehow you learned to breathe.... whew... Next we have this. "and the technology is outdated." Now it was at this point that I decided that you weren't joking and were instead just really sad. Seriously I feel for your parents/ carers. There they are, stuck in a rut, probably wiping runny shit from your ass whilst you spout out baseless 'facts' that makes them want to throttle you to your death. I want to go on but I'm feeling depressed about the future of man. God is Dead and you're the fucking proof.

It's mostly Flash and it slows my 'puter to a crawl

    by justmyluck

I'm pretty sure all those mini-movies are not streaming and load into the Flash plugin-container.exe or SOMETHING - which overloads either the plugin or the browserS I've tried because everything just comes to a crawl until I force quit. Also, trying to navigate that rotating picture 'menu' to select the different clips is like some obtuse video game. The poster is made up of different pictures, so here's an idea - click on a picture, that picture goes blank and you get a streaming video clip...ta-daaa.

  • April 9, 2011, 10:41 p.m. CST

    though...

    by justmyluck

...isn't all Flash video SUPPOSED to be streaming? Maybe they need a separate window or browser frame to 'off-load' those video clips (I haven't used Flash for years).
