More Keanu! 47 RONIN!

Nordling here.

Yeah, yeah, it's Ain't It Keanu News today...

Will we be getting a samurai renaissance?  After 13 ASSASSINS, I'm all for it.  I made the bold statement in my review that 13 ASSASSINS could stand tall in comparison with SEVEN SAMURAI, and I stand by it.  I'm not claiming it's better, mind you.  But I will say that Takeshi Miike's film is a complete and utter masterpiece, and should be experienced in a theater, but if that can't happen for you, it's available on VOD.  But I digress...

Keanu Reeves recently sat down with MTV, and not only did they discuss the future of BILL AND TED, but Reeve's upcoming 3D samurai film 47 RONIN based on the Japanese historical tale.  Now, Keanu isn't Japanese, but he will be playing a half-breed outcast who falls in love with a princess, according to the interview.  I'm sure the casting of Keanu Reeves in a very Japanese story will bring dirision, but since the rest of the cast is primarily Japanese, without Reeves' involvement the film simply would not be bankable.  Plus, director Carl Rinsch is a terrific new voice in film; if you've seen his commercials he has a hell of a good visual eye.  In short, I think 47 RONIN will be worth our time.  But here's Keanu to talk about it:

I'm all for epic samurai movies, and if Keanu's involvement makes this movie happen, I'm all for it.  Nordling, out.

from Keanu's tone, sounds like this movie's being half-assed made...

    by Squinty CGI Flynn

but I could be wrong. Keanu always sounds like that, doesn't he. I thought Chushingura was a great take on that story. Hope this one works somehow...

Like Godzilla movies. More is good.

  • April 5, 2011, 3:20 p.m. CST

Even goofball movies like "Samurai Fiction" are worthy.

    needed to be said.

  • Kinda like the Matrix. I mean let's be honest, can you picture ANYONE else as Neo? His stoic non-acting hit the nail on the head. Casting genius.

  • April 5, 2011, 3:52 p.m. CST

    at least

    by Franklancer

with Hiroyuki Sanada (twilight samurai, ringu) as Oishi, the leader of the 47 Ronin, I can have some hope for this, but really want Keanu's part to be about as big as his part in Much ado about nothing..

    Dub Keanu in Japanese

    by Roninf5

or dub the Japanese cast into English. It instantly takes me out of a film when Hollywood studios force foreign actors in a foreign set film to speak in heavily accented Engrish so lazy Americans don't have to read subtitles. Memoirs of a Geisha, starring superhot Zhang Ziyi, unfortunately comes to mind. Samurai flicks should be in Japanese but if not at least make the English lines understandable. The early Bond films dubbed all the foreign actors and it worked. Hasn't dubbing technology improved since then? It would be pretty awesome to morph a Japanese actor's voice to sound like Keanu so the dubbed Keanu sounds like he's speaking perfect, accentless Japanese. I guess I could wait for the Japanese Blu ray.

    'Derision,' Nordling...

    by Valaquen

not 'dirision'. Tut tut. Not sure how to take Reeves in this true and nice tale. Feels like they're shoehorning in a famous Westerner to appeal to, well, Westerners, rather than relying on the Japanese to lead their own story.

    Japanese movies featuring

    by PedroM

English speaking actors always take me out of the movie. They probably dubbed their lines or what not.

Samurai Movie, YES. Keanu, HELL NAW!

another "cater to 14 year old girls - PG-13- fest" me thinks...

  • April 5, 2011, 8:20 p.m. CST

Nah, Keanu is partly Chinese Hawaiian.

    by AnnoyYou

However, all Asians are interchangeable to Hollywood producers, so this won't be a problem for them. The reason I know this about Keanu is because my sister is a longtime slavering fan of his. Yeah, I don't get it either.

Keanu is the best "wost" actor

    by Jeffrey

I love so many films he is in, but I think he's just a shitty performer. To convey emotion he shouts, everything else seems like he's blue-steeling it.

I'm actually excited to see "47 Ronin." The 3D part of it I'll take or leave, but new director Carl Rinsch sounds really good so I'm hopeful. And I'll always like Keanu. For "The Matrix" and "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" especially, but also for several other films I thought he did a great job in. I mean, countering people's flippancy, the guy definitely has more than one expression. Serious, yes. But also goofy, likeable, despondent, warlike, freaky, terrifying, lovable, smooth operating, crass, and several others. To me he plays an acting style that's not overtly diverse in expression, but when you sit back and think about his many roles, you realize he's played a lot of different characters. Some better than others, yes, but he's also given memorable life and command to a few roles that other actors wouldn't have taken by the reins the way he did. Hopefully he'll bring his A-game to "47 Ronin."

    Where's my Matrix 4 & 5???

    by Johnno

AICN's fake story has planted an inception in my mind!!!! I cannot let go!!!! This spoon totem isn't bending like it used to! I'll even settle for another anime anthology or a TV series where each episode is a unique story by a different director both live action and animated just like what they did for Animatrix and the comic books. We can get Takeshi Miike to make one, we can probably get Tarantino to do something, we can get del Toro too, Lord knows nothing he's been attached to has worked out thus far... Get Spielberg, get Mamorou Oshii, get Cameron, get Nolan, hell we can even give Zack Snyder a shot. A little bit of everything. The Matrix Universe is too awesome to not be able to play in it again...

47 Ronin is too Japanese to translate to western audiences

I love Samurai movies as much as the next guy. But this isn't going to work.

He's part Chinese - close enough, right Hollywood?

    by JuanSanchez

    Naw, I jest.

  • April 6, 2011, 3:01 a.m. CST

I think Keanu is a quarter Chinese

At least he's part Asian, as opposed to being white and having his eyelids taped and teeth bucked up like Mickey Rooney in Breakfast At Tiffany's.

    the heritage thing

    by BadMrWonka

Keanu is a mix of everything under the sun, but more importantly, people need to get over the Japanese/Chinese thing. Chow Yung Fat is Chinese...if he were in a samurai movie, I'm sure a few tongue would wag. But honestly, what's the difference between that and a Scotsman playing an American? Or a Swedish actor playing an Englishman? the idea of "race", as we think of it, is truly a contruct of our own prejudices. Genetically, it means nothing at all. let's all let go of these stupid worries, and just judge movies on the merits they SHOULD be judged by: Least amount of Scientology involvement.

47 Ronin is an amazing story. Can they do it right?

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

In a nutshell the samurai's master was ordered to perform seppuka aka ritual suicide. I don't recall the details as to why. With the master dead, and the honor of the house gone the samurai go their separate ways, pretend to be local drunks, bums, go ronin aka masterless samurai. However the plan is for them to fake it for a few years, then at the appointed time they regroup, and attack the lord responsible for their master's death. There's no need for a half breed, whether it be Keanu or anyone else in this story. I'd really love to see Lone Wolf and Cub (Kozure Okami) aka Shogun Assassin aka The Baby Cart Assassin redone as a tv series because the manga series is incredible.

I thought the comedy male-rape went a little too far for this to fall in the same stable as a masterpiece that everyone needs to see.

    by cineninja

...or half breed in the 47 Ronin! WTF? Theyre doing the same thing to 47 Ronin (a true story) that they did when they turned Saigo Takamori(lleader of the Satsuma Rebellion) in to Katsumoto and added Tom Cruise for Last Samurai. Theyre are more then enough excellent, well recognized Japanese actors that can do that without throwing reeves in to the mix. It makes this LESS marketable IMHO. Lets see if he mangles Japanese like he mangled an English accent in Dracula. No way, dude-san.
