Summer Movie TV Spots! THOR! GREEN LANTERN! PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES! KUNG FU PANDA 2!
Nordling here.
Summer's almost here, to judge by the commercials coming. I especially like the THOR TV Spot - the Mjolnir-cam kicks much butt:
And here's THOR commercial #2!
I'm very happy WB brought the epic out with the WonderCon GREEN LANTERN spot. And now GL is hitting the airwaves. I think kids are going to lose their minds over this one this summer:
GREEN LANTERN Spot #2!
The jury's still out for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, but the fact that it's a standalone film makes me more intrigued for this one than the last:
We've seen most of this stuff in this KUNG FU PANDA 2 spot already, but it still looks fun as heck:
Thanks for TheMovieBox.Net for the embeds. Nordling, out.

Everything about Thor makes me cringe. Just embarrassingly bad. Green Lantern just looks like a loud noisy mess. But I hope Ryan Reynolds finds some time to make smug wise cracks. He so rarely does that. Pirates looks ok I suppose. It doesn't make me jump with joy but I don't break out in hives the way the other two make me. Really really looking forward to Kung Fu Panda 2 as I absolutely love the first one.

Funny how people are flip flopping about Thor and Green Lantern...
by Steepdog1
based soley on the trailers. I could edit footage from "Batman and Robin" together and make it look like "the Dark Knight". fact is...Hollywood thinks that mainstream audiences LOVE "fish out of water" humor in superhero movies. And thats what they show in the trailer, no matter what the rest of the movie is like. Every trailer for a supehero movie (that isn't supposed to be "dark") inevetably shows that awkward moment where either a) Superhero does or says something silly upon discovering superpowers or b) (Super)hero not from earth is confused by earth stuff and "hilarity" ensues. For some reason, hollywood thinks this is the absolute best part of every movie, and emphasize it as much as humanly possible in trailers...usually by showcasing horrible lines spoken by lame sidekicks. you can make the first two Spider-Man movies look like the worst movies ever made pretty easily if you only show the cheesey parts. So its funny that Green Lantern was going to suck when that's all they showed...but now that they are showing cool stuff its not... And no one seemed to be worried about Thor until they showed the "funny" stuff...but now it's going to be lame. I'm just hoping for both to be fun summer popcorn movies that don't basically call me a f*cking moron for liking the source material (I'm looking at you REVENGE OF THE FALLEN)

The dark horse is Green Lantern, but watch it make the most
by Terrence
That is my prediction. I have a feeling after all the shit the production has gotten from fanboys and the media taking the word of fanboys, they're going to pull out with one of the bigger box offices of the summer, especially if it gets repeat viewings and kids want to see it.
-
It's gonna be a long summer...
-
Thor, with the lead's grating accent, looks like an all out turd. Green Lantern? That flick's a total question mark. Ditto Pirates. Again, it feels tired and labored.
-
No, really, he is. If you google celebrities with bipolar disorder, he might be on the list, depending on how complete it is. This will only be of significance to people who watch Celebrity Apprentice.

That's my prediction anyway. I don't know that it will make the most money (that should be Transformers or Harry Potter), but I think Super 8 will be the best.
-
2011 has got some good big-budget summer flicks, but ain't gonna top 1999 as best movie year evar!!! Also, Harry, please just put my Boba Fett in an envelope and stick him in the mail. You know my address.
-
a couple years ago, I predicted the same for The Hangover, before there was even a trailer. People thought I was crazy, but I was proven right...emphatically so. Hangover 2 will do okay money, but I think many people will (rightly) say it's just the exact same movie in a new location. I think Horrible Bosses will be that sleeper hit this year. Mark my words.

Thor: Bomb of the summer. Green Lantern: Monster hit
-
... Cars 2 or Transformers 3 to be king at the box office domesticly. Potter to take it worldwide. Super hero movies land in the middle. There are too many of them. Despite my deepest desire ... i expect Super 8 to be pretty good ... but not able to capture that "magic" from the 80's completely. It does not exist in the age of youtube, iphone, facebook and reality tv.
-
No posters, no trailers. Im surprised the hype machine for this one hasn't started yet. It should. They need to start early making people forget how bad Revenge Of The Fallen. The bright side is that this one HAS to be better.
-
Is pretty obvious isn't it? Wow how revolutionary you think Panda and Cars 2 will make more money than comic book films... Um duh! Kids and families will see those two horrible fucking movies over and over. Also you can't hate on Hangover 2 and then bust a nut over Kung Fu Panda 2 or even Cars 2. Talk about retreading. Cars 2 will be Pixar's official first failure in my eyes. It's a movie ripping off James Bond films... I enjoyed that when Austin Powers did it. Someone made hands down the best post I've ever read here... I think it was by steepdog... The trailers for these movies always show the "comedy" moments in the commercials... Why? Because you're average asshole would not be excited by Thor kicking ass or Green Lantern doing his thing. That would be too "out there" so they show the comedy moments that will make average joe asshole go "That movie will be funny, I'll check it out". So I'm not worried about either film. Also Hangover 2 will make crazy money because people like to go out to "safe" movies. Where they know what they are going to get. Same reason why Thor and Green Lantern are focusing on comedy in the commercials. So they can look "safe" where the sci-fi would put some people off.

Re: Transformers marketing & OVERestimating Green Lantern
by ShiftyEyedDog
Transformers 2 waited until later than the rest to start its media blitz, and they'll do the same thing with 3. Once we hit like mid/late May they'll market the hell out of it. Green Lantern will not be a monster hit. It will be a moderate hit, and the money it does make will be misleading as the 3D prices will inflate it. Whether its a great movie or not, I think the general masses will not embrace it the way fanboys here are. They'll see it once and then forget it. I mean the Wondercon footage feedback here is like 95% fanboys drooling. But look at any non-fanboy outlet that ran the footage(deadline.com for example) and the reaction is FAR less enthusastic. It's about 40% love to 60% negative.
-
because of the toy/games angle: there are so many Emerald Knights to build! The film designers made it clear last year that *everyone* of the Lanterns you see on screen in June 2011 will make it Toys R Us. It's the new Star Wars.
-
just because they make toys doesn't mean anyone will want to buy them. If they make EVERY lantern into a toy (which I dont believe for a second), I guarantee you 90% of them will be "peg-warmers". And that's assuming even the main character GL toys sell at all.
-
And you've got Green Lantern ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean?
You're out of your mind. Pirates of the Caribbean is going to own the summer. Transformers 3 will be a tight competitor with POTC because Americans are.....well.....they are Americans......
The remaining spots in the top 10 are all up for grabs....but Green Lantern will be near the bottom.
-
Thor looks ponderous and boring, and I despised Pirates 2 and 3. I'll probably check out Kung Fu Panda in a matinee, but will be at Green Lantern on opening night.

Actually this looks like a great Summer for us compared to last year.
by The Reluctant Austinite
Sure, not all the films you're looking forward to are going to knock it out of the park, but at least there's a pretty good line up of titles that are of interest. I'm worried about "Thor" at the box-office, but I've always been worried about Thor as a feature film long before there were ever plans for one. He's one of toughest Marvel eggs to crack, it could easily turn out ridiculous and the mainstream audience isn't familiar with the character. That turned out okay for "Iron Man", but it could have just as easily have bombed. I think the best bit of luck "Thor" has going for it is that it's basically the first Summer film this year in very early May and audiences are always desperately hungry for anything that promises Summer spectacle in the early Spring. It may have suffered much more greatly if released in July or August after the audience's appetite has been satiated by a half dozen other super hero or sci-fi spectacles.

POTC will be the highest-grossing film of the summer, EASY
by Nasty In The Pasty
Jack Sparrow is this generation's Indiana Jones...audiences were willing to follow his through two increasingly bloated sequels, and they'll do the same here. If the movie grossed less than $400 million, I will be very fucking surprised. next up will be the animated fare. Cars 2 might have the slight edge on Panda, but both will make more than $200 million apiece. Green Lantern will just confuse people who already saw Green Hornet earlier this year (what, they made a sequel ALREADY?!). Thor gets out of the gate first for superhero movies, but the character is a total non-entity for the non-geek crowd, and there's no lovable Robert Downey Jr. comeback story to entice people who know dick about the comic books. It'll do Hulk-level numbers...over $120 million, but not enough to inspire a franchise. The Hangover was absolute SHIT, but the sequel is money in the bank. Maybe not as much as the first, but $200 million is pretty much assured.

by The Founder
Even Xmen.
-
You think you're having trouble. I'm trying to source THX1 - 1137 before I see the last film. I'm stunned that none of can be found even on old VHS or Beta. Anyone?
-
Looking at the top grossing films of all time....those films are topping the list compared to the other franchises....I guess there's a big market for hob goblins and wizards out there. It's that Lord of the Rings/Narnia/fantasy crowd I guess.
BUT.....you're wrong about Pirates. It's going to give Potter a run for it's money and will likely be #2. People love Johnny Depp. He's dreamy. And despite the fact that #2 and #3 were messes in terms of story, they were still delightful romps at times and people will be willing to give #4 a chance to see if they get it right.
-
The reluctant austinite is insightful... The late summer releases will suffer because the public's appetite for summer spectacle will have already been satisfied by other big budget extravaganzas. It's too bad that there isn't more breathing room between a few of these.
-
Deserve a government pension they work so hard. And completely agree with steepdog1. The flip flopping on these movies is becoming so tiresome as content heavy features/teasers/trailers are released to offset the comedy-out-of-context footage we sometimes get.
-
But the footage does suggest a vivid, cacophonous Simonson opera, at least when it comes to the Asgard stuff. Still not sure on the earth-based action, even though it does tie in with current comic storylines.
-
Pirates 4 looks fun.

Thor looks better the more I see, same with Green Lantern, but...
by templesweeper
I think the more sci-fi comic book movies trend, then the less successful they tend to be. One thing people like about Iron Man and Batman is that they don't have super powers. People relate to them more. Even Spider-Man's powers aren't crazy. Thor and Green Lantern are gods (I know Hal Jordan isn't a god, but his power is god-like). And they both take place, partially, in other worlds. That might be a hard sell. My prediction is that Captain America does better than both of them. That movie just looks awesome in every sense.
-
... is delivered terribly. It sounds like he's trying to do Christian Bale's Bats voice. And why does his voice go up at the end? Did Sinestro grab his balls? "Green Lantern's LIGHT!!!!" 0_o
-
With Sinestro being the prime offender. Why the hell is he CGI? He doesn't even have that rectangular head. By the way, they've got to have Reynolds call out "Sinestro, so he's like sinister, right?"
-
Both look awesome. Asgard and the Dstroyer look everything like I had hoped they would. Oa looks fantastic - my only concern so far is Sinestro's look - he doesn't look evil and powerful so much; he looks more like a young alien Bob Newhart

by The Reluctant Austinite
Tell him how "insightful" I am. He "reluctantly" promised to hire me to write for Famous Monsters and I'm so broke I've been boiling old pairs of Nikes for dinner. They're rubbery, but oddly taste like chicken. Good luck contacting your long lost brother, Larry. P.S. Imagine if the "Thor" and "Captain America" release dates were switched. "Captain America" is likely to big a much bigger hit anyway, but "Thor" would probablly just tank.
-
Saw Source Code last night and it was pretty damned good. It was nothing like the trailers, which made it look cheesy. Who ARE these trailer editors? They are doing a real injustice to movies. Anyway, I really liked the movie except that they made a Tea Party patriot the bad guy.
-
...vintage Jack Kirby moment. Thinking this is gonna be really good.
-
Cody from "Sister Wives"? ;-)
-
I think it's possible that we will see a Narnia-like backlash against Transformers. It might not clear $200 million this time out. Pirates will be huge, Potter will be huge, Twilight will be huge, Panda may beat Cars 2 and Cowboys v Aliens and Super 8 could surprise, not to mention all the superhero flix. This summer is going to be way better than last.

If I was running Warner Bros. I would STOP playing the GREEN LANTERN OATH when promoting the film!
by JDanielP
Why? Because the uninformed people (potential audience) who are not familiar with the character WILL NOT KNOW he is charging the POWER RING (unless they also see and understand that in the promotion). So, obviously, if they just hear the rhyme without knowing Hal Jordon's reason for saying it, they will think it is just silly!!! --Get a clue, people!!!

Personally, I think that THOR looks SO GOOD that it will actually elevate the character!!! Perfect choice of actor, as he made himself into the man he needed to be for the role. I even feel like saying CONGRATS already!!!
-
All these movies will have sizable openings, but I predict film quality will determine the winner(s), Disney seems to be confident in the quality of PotC as they are showing scenes to audiences at Disneyland as we speak, rather than embargoing viewings/reviews as happens with turds. If it is great fare (and I hope and expect it will be) it will be near top. Since Potter is the finale, it will likely end up in the 1 or 2 spots. Thor and Green Lantern should end up near the bottom of the 10-15 tentpole films mentioned above because the characters aren't that well known, stars aren't A-list and the trailers/spots haven't been especially impressive.
