AICN HORROR: Bug checks out INSIDIOUS and more haunted house flicks with THE INNOCENTS, THE HOUSE WHERE EVIL DWELLS, 8213 GACY HOUSE, & THE BABY'S ROOM!!! Plus PEEKERS!!!
Greetings, all. Ambush Bug here with another AICN HORROR: ZOMBIES & SHARKS column. Why ZOMBIES & SHARKS? Well, those are the two things that I’ve had the most nightmares about. It’s the reason I rarely swim in the ocean. It’s the reason I have an escape plan from my apartment just in case of a zombie apocalypse. Now if you’ve ever had those fears or fears like them, inspired mainly by nights upon nights of watching films of the frightening kind, this is the place for you. So look for AICN HORROR: ZOMBIES & SHARKS every Friday for the foreseeable future, horror hounds, where we’ll be covering horror in all forms: retro, indie, mainstream, old and new.
So INSIDIOUS comes out this weekend. My review of the film can be found at the bottom of the column, but to celebrate the release of this haunted house flick, I took a look at a few other films with similar themes. But before we check out these creepy abodes, here are a few things you all might find interesting.
FAMOUS MONSTERS Imagi-Movies Film Festival is going on in LA at the Laemmle Music Hall in Beverly Hills located at 9036 Wilshire Blvd from April 8-10th. This three day film festival will celebrate films Forrest J. Ackerman loved and any fan of this column in the area should get their tickets now by going to the imagimovies website. Check out a trailer for the fest below.
God, I wish I could make it to this. I love festivals like this. Unfortunately, I’m stuck in Chicago. Anyone who goes and wants to send me a report for this column, please do so!
And now, let’s check out some prime haunted real estate!
(Click title to go directly to the feature)
THE INNOCENTS (1961)
THE HOUSE WHERE EVIL DWELLS (1982)
THE BABY’S ROOM (2006)
8213: GACY HOUSE (2010)
INSIDIOUS (2011)
And finally…PEEKERS!
THE INNOCENTS (1961)
Directed by Jack ClaytonWritten by Henry James (novel), John Mortimer, William Archibald, & Truman Capote (screenplay)
Starring Deborah Kerr, Peter Wyngarde, & Megs Jenkins
Retro-reviewed by Ambush Bug
Wan and Whannell cite THE INNOCENTS as inspiration for their attention to sound and ghostly encounters in INSIDIOUS. I can see that. But I liken this one more to THE OTHERS in its use of children and a frail yet stern central figure, with the latter half resembling THE ORPHANAGE in the manner that woman confronts the ghostly images in the end. THE INNOCENTS is definitely a frightening tale and if you’re like me and loved THE OTHERS, THE ORPHANAGE, and INSIDIOUS, you may want to seek out one of the films that started it all.
THE HOUSE WHERE EVIL DWELLS (1982)
Directed by Kevin ConnorWritten by James Hardiman (novel), Robert Suhosky (screenplay)
Starring Edward Albert, Doug McClure, & Susan George
Retro-reviewed by Ambush Bug
THE BABY’S ROOM (LA HABITACION DEL NINO) (2006)
Directed by Alex de la IglesiaWritten by Jorge Guerricaechevarria & Alex de la Iglesia
Starring Javier Gutierrez, Leonor Watling, & Sancho Garcia
Retro-reviewed by Ambush Bug
I’m getting the shivers just writing this.
8213: GACY HOUSE (2010)
Directed by Anthony FankhauserWritten by Anthony Fankhauser (uncredited)
Starring Jim Lewis, Matthew Temple, Michael Gaglio, Brett A. Newton, Diana Terranova, Sylvia Panacione, & Rachel Riley

A lot of folks roll their eyes at another found footage horror film, but I think that's because there's been a glut of them in recent memory. It's not a new concept and a lot of times, in this day and age of first person shooter games and reality television, it seems to be yet another way for the audience to become that much closer to the film. In horror, it's uncomfortable to get in this proximity to a horror film because it's likely to pull you in close, then yell in your ear or show you something startling. Yet, I love this feeling and I'm sure those of you who read this column feel the same way about being scared. I'm not going to say that 8213: GACY HOUSE is a standout in this subgenre of found footage horrors, but it is worth a scare or two and since this column is dedicated to haunted houses, I figured if I was going to focus on a found footage film, I might as well focus on one we all haven't seen.
INSIDIOUS (2011)
Directed by James WanWritten by Leigh Whannell
Starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey, Ty Simpkins, Lyn Shaye, Leigh Whannell

Haunted house films are a favorite genre of mine and while INSIDIOUS may not fit perfectly fit into that category, it does have all of the elements of a good old fashioned ghost story. There may be those who might not like INSIDIOUS, saying that it is too derivative of other ghost stories of the past. It seems director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell's favorite ghost stories might be very similar to my own. Though there are scenes that remind me of POLTERGEIST, THE INNOCENTS (reviewed above), THE OTHERS, and THE BABY'S ROOM (reviewed above), PAN'S LABYRINTH, and other films, I think with the strong performances by its stars, some creatively crafted scenes, and music that is equal parts mood and punch, INSIDIOUS holds its own as a strong and original addition to the subgenre.
A lot of the scares of INSIDIOUS come from silence and then a BAM! of music. To fault this film for it is to fault the entire horror genre. It's a standby shockeroo that guarantee a jump/scream/laugh from the audience. In INSIDIOUS, it's used quite often, but rarely as a false scare. That pounding on the keyboard sound only serves to intensify an already frightening image. Music composer Joe Dzuban deserves mention for a score that really makes you jump out of your seat. Right from the get go, INSIDIOUS blares gothic music in your face which reminded me of the Hammer films of old. Plus nothing speaks creepy more than Tiny Tim, whose "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" is a song used to full creepy effect in numerous scenes in the film.
And finally, speaking of next week’s FAMOUS MONSTERS Imagi-Movies Film Festival, Mark Steensland, one of the creators of one of the short films featured in the fest contacted me this week and showed me his short PEEKERS. I loved it so much, I asked if I could share it with you guys. Be sure to check out the PEEKERS website after checking out the short. Enjoy PEEKERS!
See ya, next week, folks!

Is this site becoming more whorish?

Baby's Room and Gacy's House could be fun. Were Evil Dwells, I saw long ago and promptly forgot about. But you mentioned Burnt Offerings....that movie completely fucked with me as a kid. Not something an eight year old should be watching. Nosiree.
-
for clowning around in Gacy's house. Heh.

Seems like I'm the only one reading your column today. Don't take it too hard. Somewhere there must be a Babylon 5 convention or something.
-
Might be time to renew that Netflix account.

Me and my fiancé have been hunting out good horror movies for a while now, but sadly, for every gem (the Innocents, the Bad Seed, Don't Look Now) we're stung by overated mediocrity (seriously, Santa Sangre and Suspiria haven't aged at all well). Good to know we'll be able to check this site for the tips in the future - just don't fall into the film student/intellectual role of being an apologist for the so called classics; most of them were good, but aren't that hot anymore...
-
Please tell me that is incorrect. I do like this feature though.

...Robert Wise's The Haunting, based on Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. Stephen King considers it the finest haunted house novel, and I won't argue. But the film is no letdown from the book; at least not this version. Unlike the travesty Jan de Bont remake, a deluge of special effects, here Wise uses everything Val Lewton taught him about suggesting horrible things instead of showing them, fortified by Nelson Gidding's amazing black-and-white photography and a performance by Julie Harris as Eleanor I'll never forget. I think it's at least a match for The Innocents (one of the great ones, I agree), and for my money, even better. If you haven't seen it, Bug, you must; it's a classic of the genre. Atropos, I can't make guarantees, but if you like the ones you mentioned (and I agree The Bad Seed is worth seeing despite staginess and the beyond-cheesy end credits), I think there's an excellent chance you'll like it.

Man, I could have sworn I read somewhere that she had passed. Good to know she hasn't. Thanks for bringing my attention to it. Story is updated.
-
Maybe that led the confusion. Bug - you should check out WAKE WOOD and STAKE LAND if you haven't already - two decent movies right up your street.
-
I just recorded "The Innocents" in HD, but haven't watched it yet. And that short "Peekers" while having slight problems with editing the performances (only at the doorway at the beginning), and maybe needing better color grading... really is great! It's chilling and original. A cool short film.

I know you take requests, Bug.

The Innocents is one of the best horror movies ever made. EVER.
by superhero
Only bested by the original Haunting. It's true. Watch 'em in the dark with all the blinds drawn. I dare you.

I was worried you had heard something I had not. I am a sucker for these types of movies and have not been given much recently to remain sated. I will check out The Baby's Room per your review. Insidious is one I have been looking forward to as well.

Ah, Susan George... never saw "...Where Evil Dwells," but that trailer looks awesome.
by WriteForTheEdit
And Susan was SO SMOKING HOT back in day... "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" made me do very bad things. Repeatedly.

Its pretty much perfect, with some seriously creepy psychosexual undertones. One of my favourite movies ever.

Since becoming a parent I've gotten myself quite the fear of baby monitors. They're fucking creepy. I realize they just pick up other radio signals, but still, you sometimes hear some really weird shit on them. Then for about a month there was a big hardcover book of The Adventure of Winnie the Pooh that kept flinging itself across the room and banging into the crib while my daughter slept. Again, I realize there is no such thing as ghosts, but it's fucking creepy. It was only a matter of time that a movie would come along and exploit this.
-
Still creeps me out today (the Blu Ray is magnificent) The Freddie Francis B&W photography is quite stunning, hard, deep black shadows with a single light source on the actors faces. Easily in the top five horror movies ever.

Well, it will be on HBO Signature in HD on April 8th. Of course, since it's HBO, it may not be OAR. (HBO has earned and deserves LOTS of hate!)
-
Guess I'll track it down. Me and my girl have been on a ghost kick, we have The Entity coming in Netflix and we watched Hell House the other night. I'm down to see Insidious as well, I think James Wan is a pretty solid director, I even find his stuff like Death Sentence interesting. Shit, I loved Dead Silence.
-
That's a fantastic series with probably only one dud episode (A REAL FRIEND). And yes, THE BABY'S ROOM is superb. For a TV movie it has some of the most intense scares I've seen in a long time. Another favourite episode from the series is TO LET, a tight little slasher starring the delicious Macarena Gomez. I reckon that if they could have put 10-15 more minutes onto it they could've released it as a feature. Anyway, I think any horror fan would get a real kick out of this series. At around the hour mark for each film they're pretty easy to get through.
-
just about the scariest thing i've ever seen. Not available in UK, last I checked, for some random reason it is available in region 1 though so I found a copy in the States. I think they remade it with Harry Potter or someone similar, but this one is just fucking terrifying.
I'd love to see Andy Nyman & Jeremy Dyson's Ghost Stories, too, but I think it has finished its run. Has anyone here been to see it? I'm fine with being spoiled, everyone who has been is keeping quiet but saying it was fantastic. The nightwatchman part I have heard about and it sounds creepy.
That demon over Wilson's shoulder does look like a pretty neat scare. But having seen SAW i'm not sure that i'll like their style. Less is definitely more when it comes to horror.
Speaking of less is more, has anyone seen The Eclipse with Ciaran Hinds. A very slow and meditative film, which has two or three absolutely horrific scenes in it that will stay with you for a very long time. The soundtrack to one part has an acappella choir that sing beautifully before suddenly dropping into atonal demented rage as something very scary happens on screen. It has Father Ted's Bishop Brennan in it, and so terrifying is he here that I have trouble focusing on Len Brennan being kicked up the arse. Anything that can ruin Father Ted for you has to be worth seeing.
