Geoffrey Rush joins the Green Lantern Corps!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some Green Lantern news, thanks to the eagle-eyed folks at The Hero Complex blog.

Looks like the awesome Geoffrey Rush will be voicing the bizarre Tomar-Re, the bird/reptile/fish lookin' member of the corps.

Green Lantern was never my thing as a kid, thanks to my Marvel-only snobbery (if it wasn't X-Men or Spider-Man I didn't give a shit), but I'm sure one of these days I'll buy up the archival books and give them a read.

I do know I love the look of all these creatures and that Rush is awesome, so hopefully he rubs off on the movie.

Geoffrey Rush brings his shit to every movie he's in.

    This is very good news.

I always thought Green Lantern was a camping accessory

    by SoylentMean

I've never read the comics, might fix that before the movie, but honestly, probably won't. But if you add Geoffrey Rush to the equation you are most certainly adding quality. I'm seeing the movie, no matter what.

Its because Reynolds isnt Hal Jordan

    by gooseud

Sorry, hate to be all fanboyish, but even the most basic characterization of Hal is something Reynolds cant pull off. Hal Jordan is the ultimate alpha male of the DCU. Hes the jock fighter pilot, the Man Without Fear. He is the guy that Batman hates, because he sees through all of Batman's psychological tricks and just calls bullshit on them (the feeling is mutual, as Hal thinks Batman is a prudey weirdo douchebag). Now, can you see, in a movie, Reynolds walking up to Batman and decking him and telling him, basically, to sit down and STFU, and have it be remotely believable? And have Batman actually go along with it (this actually happened, by the way, in the comics)? If the answer is no, then you know why this movie will blow. Oh, and one other thing: Hal Jordan would NEVER say "I KNOW RIGHT?!?!?" when putting on the costume.

I'm right there with ya, Quint. Green Lantern looks ridiculous without the support of any fond childhood comics memories. Thor and Cap, on the other hand . . .

    Dennis Quaid...

    by Geoff Clingan

... Would have been an awesome Hal Jordan in his Innerspace days... At least that's who I'd always pictured in the role. I'm a huge GL fan (even have myself a GL tattoo) and I'm looking forward to this. Reynolds may not be the perfect choice but I think he's got the versatility to pull it off. If the guy can make Buried watchable then I'm sure he can do this.

For the love of God, please make all these

    by Ingeld

super hero movies go away. I loved the first two Superman movies. I enjoyed one or two of the Batman and Spiderman flicks. But enough! It has been done. Give it all a break for at least ten years. There are other possibilities.

    Actually goosebud

    by BlaGyver

That's exactly what I can see Reynolds doing. You want a fucking alpha male? We're talking about Van Fucking Wilder. Also, if anybody's read Secret Origins, which is a heavy inspiration for this from what I understand, Hal Jordan is NOT always the Hal Jordan he is today. He's reckless, makes bad decisions, cracks jokes, he's a ladies again, Ryan Reynolds. What's more, Geoff Johns was the primary creative consultant. I think you guys are just hating for the sake of hating. And as far as "I know, right?"'s a hollywood blockbuster movie. It was bound to have a moment or two like that and I'd rather know about it ahead of time.

That's like saying water is wet, basically. Rush is kind of out the blue whoever.

  • March 30, 2011, 7:25 p.m. CST

    by qjinx

You are right about this is Hal Jordan NOW. In the late 80's DC updated his origin with emerald dawn. In it, Hal is a reckless, careless duesch bag who gets a DUI right off the bat. It' s the responsibility he is given with the ring that turns him into who he is today. Like you said, the alpha cocky pilot that punches batman in rebirth isssue 5 or 6. But despite de aging him in rebirth, GLs new continuuity has stayed consistent with the emerald dawn origin. I've recently been going over my cap America and GL old comics as way to get excited for the movies. Ryan reynolds from that trailer is exactly Hal Jordan from when he first gets the ring. He's still got a long way to go

    I really can't believe

    by Kremzeek

people are saying Thor looks better than GL. That's hilarious. Don't get me wrong, I think Marvel is kicking some ass - and Capt. America looks amazing. But Thor... ugh. It looks like they took costume ideas that were lft over from 97's Batman & Robin. Just horrific. There are only 2 reasons I'll see Thor: Marvel has done a damn good job so far so I'm willing to cut them some slack, and Hopkins rules. I really want to be wrong about Thor - truly. But if I had to go from what's been released so far... GL kicks Thor's ass (the films I mean, not the characters). We shall see. I know I'm in the minority, but I think Reynolds is a top-notch actor. I've watched him do comedy, of course, but I've also seen him pull off some seriously great drama - even little moments in his more "stupid" films. The talent is there, without doubt. I just hope the script and over all "vision" of the film allows him to shine. I'm with some others when I say I hope they don't bog down GL with a bunch of crappy one-liners. Time will tell.

I Think THOR And GL Both Look Awful

    by NeonFrisbee

Which is a shame, cause I'm a fan of both comics (moreso GL, which has been one of the best mainstream comics running for well on 5 years or more.)

    mr ahole...

    by Rebel Scumb

While I'm not one to try and be overly negative, in this case I get it. The trailer just failed to impress me on any level other than a few fairly nifty looking creatures. Nothing about the cinematography, casting, acting, overall tone, special fx, or tidbit of story we get from the trailer gave me that "I need to see this" or even "I suppose I might see this" feeling. And I'm no Green latern expert, although I prefer GL to Superman, and also fall into the 'marvel only snobbery' category. But still, I never cared about Captain America, and yet I think that movie looks like a lot of fun.

    THOR just looks...boring

    by Lucifer Haywood

I really want to like Thor AND Cap when they come out. I'm a DC guy, so GL is at the top of my list for the year. But my Dad used to bring home comics in those "3-in-1" polybags from his old grocery distributor job when I was a kid. They were almost always Marvel, so I have a real soft spot for Thor and Cap. The Thor trailer leaves me "meh". I get less of a sumptuos design vibe and more of a Twilight/I Am Number Four thing. Which is not how it should be, this is THOR!!! Ultimately I have faith that GL is going to blow people away, hopefully visually AND story/character-wise.

I Became More Of A DC Guy Over Time

    more on John Larroquette

    by quentintarantado

Interesting. The reason John Larroquette is listed as Tomar-Re is because he voiced the character in the 2009 DVD Green Lantern: First Flight. Whoever made the cast list assumed prematurely John would still be in the movie role.

    They're still casting this thing?!?

    by Chewtoy

I guess since he doesn't have any lips, it's not like they need to animate to the voice too much... But it still means that his performance is reduced to a dub job, and he can't change the speed of the delivery or really be at all flexible with the lines at this point. I just don't understand why you wait until April to record lines for a film opening in June.

  • March 30, 2011, 8:20 p.m. CST

    by Aaron

  • Check out google news... There are a ton of stories quoting him talking about the lack of promotion for the film being due to hold ups with the FX, and them not wanting to put out another trailer that will be as savaged as the last one. The next trailer will be in front of Thor.

  • March 30, 2011, 8:27 p.m. CST

Oops. Try again: THE RIGHT STUFF.

    by Aaron

I fucked up. Anyway, I watched THE RIGHT STUFF for the first time since high school the other week, and there are like five dudes in that movie who could've been Hal Jordan (if the timing was right, of course, hypothetically speaking. What I mean is that those guys are the kind of Alpha Males that Hal Jordan was, not Man Wilder-style frat boy hilarity. Specifically the guy playing Yeager (Sam Shepard)--that dude was Hal Jordan up and down. A more contemporary (but alas, still too old) choice of mine would've been Bruce Campbell, and not just because Wizard magazine cast him as GL in one of their dream casting articles. Because Bruce Campbell is rugged, manly, and awesome. Now, I haven't seen BURIED, but Reynolds just doesn't have what it takes. Like someone mentioned above, no way could I see Reynolds giving Christian Bale, Brandon Routh, Michael Keaton, Chris Reeve, and even poor Henry Cavill the what for. He's punching way above his weight class.

I must admit I admire the moxi of this film

    by Phategod100

The Trailer looked like shit and we have not seen any footage in months, but to take the bold step of making this movie as fatihful to the Comic as they are, I have to admire that. I just wish the effects decisions that were made would have changed and maybe a different choice for the GL, and director.

there should be more out about this film, I know there's others coming first and they get first promo and all that but this close to release and we only just hear that a fairly big name actor is voicing a part in this? I'm probably wrong but it also seems like he's doing it now? That's weird to IF I'm reading this right.

George Lucas robbed the Lantern Corps...

    by zinc_chameleon

back in 1977, with ANH. The Jedi are so obviously the GL Corps, with light sabers instead of power rings. What makes the mythology so good is how much it is a science-fiction version of the Kabala: beings created just below God (or after the Big Bang for you atheists) disagree as to how much compassion they should show for we lesser mortals. One of them bequeaths us its power, and OA is born. There is a war in heaven, and another--still believing itself in the right--decides to put an end to this meddling. The Parallax manifests! Steven Baxter wrote about this kinds of creatures in 'Exultant'; it's this kind of cosmic struggle that makes Hal Jordan's fights with Sinestro ring so well. But I agree, something is 'off' with this movie. And this from a director who made The Mask of Zorro a must-see!

I don't get all the hate either

    by Koyaanisqatsi

The trailer doesn't make it look any better or worse than the current crop of superhero flicks. Of course I'm not so completely and utterly stupid that I think I can judge a movie's tone, production value and actors' performances from a single trailer. I mean it's not like trailers take moments from a movie and show them to people completely out of context... oh wait, that's exactly what they do. And nobody can be so idiotic as to pass judgment on a film before it's even been seen and/or released... oh wait, this is the internet, that's what everybody does. At the end of the day if you're not willing to keep your mouth shut about a movie's quality before you even see it then your opinion (on anything and everything) is worthless and you are a horrible human being.

  • March 30, 2011, 9:58 p.m. CST

    by LowDevil

Lol, i completely agree with Cap. Especially the flamethrower part of the trailer. Pointless. Do you think they would be that stupid as to have Cap throw his shield and have it richochet off all 4 flamethrower guys?? That would make me throw shit at the movie screen.

  • March 30, 2011, 9:59 p.m. CST

    by Koyaanisqatsi

You're right, you absolutely can judge the trailer. As a trailer, aka An out of context 2% of a movie. You know, a business tool that's used to sell a movie to people who aren't already aware it exists and not necessarily to accurately portray how a movie will play to any given audience. I'm curious, did you see The Phantom Menace in theaters? According to your logic since it had an amazing and wonderfully evocative trailer the movie had to be bad right? Did you just skip it and wait for home video because your impeccable trailer analysis techniques warned you in advance?

i really hope GL is good. if it isnt, itll only delay the inevitable Justice League movie. Geof Rush is awesome. i hope they do for his character what pirates 2 did with bill nigh insofar as facial/expression recognizibility in the CG. from the trailer, it seems to me they may be playing up the camp and comedy of renolds demeanor. i remember hal jordan being a fairly serious guy however. he was, after all, a military man, and then an essential cop of the cosmos. i always imagined him with that authorative bravado in his attitude. much like batman. i hope the trailer is only showing the minority tone of the film to attract fans of mr renolds' other work. rush is awesome. i hope this movie is up to par for him.

  • March 30, 2011, 11:17 p.m. CST

Everyone prefers Jack Black, I guess

    by Larry Sellers

Remember when that movie was this || close to getting made? At least Reynolds is competent at drama. I think the angle they're taking of Hal is that he's excited by his's right in the trailer. He can imagine and will whatever he wants with his ring. And that would be an exciting thing for a pilot who (again, according to the trailer) is some kind of ugh "hot shot" douche. In the end he'll be humbled, blah blah, and earns his place among the Corps. The straight-laced military man who was already a responsible, strong-willed person...that works in the books. Because the people who were reading the comic had already read comics and were prepared to buy whatever the comic book premise is. The cocky, douchey Hal can work in a movie. Where there needs to be a good, obvious arc for people who haven't read the comics. Narratively, I'm glad they're playing to Reynold's strengths and using the comedy as a spring board into some shit about responsibility and integrity. Again...that's just what I glean from the trailer.

Surprising To Me That More People Aren't Into GL

    by THX1968

Surprising because: A) GL pretty much dominates the DC Universe comics at the moment and, B) Martin Campbell is directing the damn thing! Great director. I think the movie looks great. I dig the trailer, and I think the next one will rock it out a little more. Maybe people haven't discovered the pure awesomeness of Hal Jordan. Maybe Warners needs to put it in people's faces a little more. We need some GL Happy Meals or something. Burger King needs to sell some cool GL glasses. GL is by no means a household name, but it shouldn't be that hard to sell the badass. GL was a Super Friend for Julius Schwartz's sake! There shouldn't be any more comparisons to Thor. GL looks like an epic sci-fi drama (yay!), while Thor looks like a Masters of the Universe remake. I'm pulling for GL more than any other summer flick because it seems that many aren't into it, and I think its going to rock. This is going to be a brand spanking new adventure hero, in a brand new movie. C'mon, how cool is that?! It ain't a goddamn reboot, and it ain't a goddamn sequel! I, for one, am looking forward to a new experience.

  • March 30, 2011, 11:50 p.m. CST

AHA! See some of the Cap/Thor haters being here all loving.

    by Carl XVI Gustaf

;) Never really read any GL, but I hear they're staying pretty true to the comics. And that deserves my ass in the seat. Also kinda have a man-crush on Reynold all the way back since that Pizzeria show. Didn't like the trailer at all tho. The tone felt like... Wild Wild West with superpeople. They should get another one out. And Martin Campbell, gotta see it!

    by njscribe44

than another "reboot" of X-Men, Superman, Spider-Man or Batman. Most action movie trailers give away too many good special effects, but the only energy construct I remember seeing in full was the classic fist. Still looking forward to "GL" though.

    Waiting for 2nd trailer ...

    by thegrayghost

To form an opinion on how excited I should be. The first trailer was ok. I loved all the Green Lantern Corps parts, but some of the jokey Ryan Reynolds parts had me cringing. Mark Strong and all the space stuff looked incredible. I hope they can figure out what makes this superhero interesting and different from Batman, Superman, Ironman because I can't really get excited over Hector Hammond as a villain.

  • March 31, 2011, 12:56 a.m. CST

I grew up a marvel kid as well, never giving much thought to dc other than the awesome animated stuff and some movies, but for the past 5 years I have been reading DC as well, trust me my friend you owe it to yourself to at least read GL starting when Geoff johns took over.

  • March 31, 2011, 1 a.m. CST

Just rewatched the GL trailer. Best parts:

    by Carl XVI Gustaf

Jim Carrey wakes up with a one night stand, he's overslept, hilariously late for work. Driving his GLmobile to work, skidding comically. The Gossip Girl autonomabot almost left the Uncanny Valley there for a bit. Van Wilder takes off his belt. We get to know the main character as he cleverly whispers his motivations. Among other things we learn he's a top pilot who crashes. The purple head can talk... He explains all the GL stuff. Space. JJ Abrams cameo in the jeep. Hal Jordan has the powers of God himself and he can not lie! He also have to build an arch. I KNOW, RIGHT?

  • March 31, 2011, 1:12 a.m. CST

Have you guys seen Ryan Reynolds act ever?

    by BlaGyver

Or are you still just butthurt because he got to fuck Scarlett Johansson and you probably won't ever? Everyone bringing up the question of whether or not you can see Ryan Reynolds punching Christian Bale in the face and all that shit....fuck, have you ever seen Reynolds in something not Van Wilder? He's perfect to portray a guy that ballsy, that brash, irrational and spontaneous. This entire talkback reminds me of the mock-talkback scene in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. And good point. If this looks so awful we should probably just imagine how much better it would have been if the Jack Black version got made.

and as far as him being a womanizer in the trailers

Best lantern-stories I ever read were Ron Marz' Rayner-Run

    by AshMcQ

Among the best superhero runs I ever read. Can reread this over and over. And I'm not much of a DC Fanboy either.

  • March 31, 2011, 2:28 a.m. CST

And Marvel: Kids, DC:Adults is buillshit.

    by AshMcQ

Marvel Comics seems to be more adult when it comes to social and pschologic aspects, where DC is deeper with metaphysical and philosophical stuff. But really, there are so many exceptions to that, that it isn't much accurate either(F.e. Thor, Batman). Still, there is definitivley still some difference when it comes to storytelling, which I think is very cool.

Bet you Admiral Ackbar will look more real than CGI Tomar-Re.

    by Se7en

Verbinski gets its. He combined Bill Nighy's performance as the basic template and later on add CGI for the freakish look of the character. Using CGI Tomar-Re totally and adding Geoffrey Rush's as his voice will not be as good as Verbinski's technique. Guarenteed.

I don't watch anymore Ryan Reynolds movies...

    by Dr. Egon Spengler

Because I think he's a terribly annoying actor. It has nothing to do with who he is/was fucking. This biggest problem with the Green Lantern movie is: Ryan Reynolds "I KNOW, RIGHT?!" Fuck you, Ryan Reynolds.

    Ryan Reynolds > Bradley Cooper

    by Jack Shepherd

Don't forget, Bradley Cooper was reportedly one of the finalists for the Hal Jordan role. I think we can all agree that Ryan Reynolds was the better choice. He was a better choice than Timberlake, too.

    by Real Deal

There would be a bunch of fanboys saying " This will suck ! ". And not much reason behind it. I don't know how you could tell much from the trailer. I haven't seen the lead actor in much. So how can you tell enough from this to hate it so much? I think it's like Khan says " For hate's sake I spit on thee ". The number one thing they say about anything " This will suck! ".

Ben Chaplin should be Shade. Now that would be interesting. This film looks better than Thor and I used to read that comic religiously, but I'm more faithful in Cap from the trailer. We shall see!!

LOL. Judging by the trend in comic book movies lately the GL reboot will be announced shortly after (if not shortly before) the movies opening night. But for some reason, and despite the reboot, the original creative team will stay atttched to the project.

If you liked the GL trailer, fine. You're not necessarily an idiot. However, you knuckle-dragging, drool-wiping simians who are bashing/dismissing those that did not like it can take a fuck off a cliff headfirst into a pool of diarrhea shit. we have legit reasons for not liking it; excessive use of lame comedy, terrible CGI, awful fake suit, bad-acting leading lady, etc. I can guarantee it will be shit. I have no doubt. Will I give it a chance? Of course. But I will have expectations lower than if I expected sex from that girl who plays that goth on NCIS upon our first meeting.

Step my Blasian brotha, you are absolutely correct.

    by Stalkeye

however, both Wolverine and Blade trinity were (litterly) forgetable films. Same goes for Halle who did DC's Crapwoman. But there was a quote from RDJ (years ago) when asked about playing a DC character: RDJ: "Fuck DC". Not only could Bradley do Jordan justice, but the fucker is practically spot on casting as MGS' Solid Snake. (if such a movie were made.) Have yet to see Limitless, but so far, i have heard nothing but good things about it. Here's wishing The Coop better roles and of course Comic adaptations.

    by Koyaanisqatsi

They haven't shown anything since then because the effects work on the film is so massive. The studio is on record saying that considering the lukewarm reaction to the trailer (from some people and not nearly a majority) they didn't want to show anything else to us that wasn't finished. The new trailer is out this weekend.

    Kilowog's voice

    by DrMeyer

IMDb says it's gonna be Dennis Haysbert, but it's highly likely that's wrong. John Larroquette is credited as Tomar-Re, so the odds are they've gone back into the studio to re-record the voices for a number of the nonhuman Lanterns. A well-known voice can make a big difference, and DC has a lot riding on this; this is their Iron Man, the tentpole that Justice League is gonna be hung on until the next Superman is released. The movie you guys oughta be worried about is Green Arrow: Supermax. Right now it's a much iffier proposition.

  • March 31, 2011, 6:42 p.m. CST

    by DrMeyer

There have been attempts do do a Captain Marvel movie for years now; William Goldman has done a script that somebody else has rewritten, and there have been about six or seven directors attached, but the film is mired in Development Hell, and looks like it's gonna stay there. DC's a bit more concerned about getting another Superman film done before the end of next year, when, if they fail to release another one, the rights to Superman revert to the Siegel & Shuster Estates. Which would, in effect, take Superman away from DC until the lawyers sort it all out. That's the reason for the hurry in getting the Snyder film done and into theaters.

    Worst superhero flick of 2011?

    by DrMeyer

I'm hoping it's neither one, Thor or GL. I'm a GL fan and have been for awhile, but I'm really hoping for Thor for two reasons: one, the cast is great, especially Hopkins as Odin. Two, JMS wrote the script, and as far as I'm concerned he walks on water, and if you don't agree then go fuck yourself. I've known Joe Straczynski for over twenty years, and he's never failed to deliver the goods when somebody stayed outta his way. And a third reason. Ken Branagh is a masterful director, a brilliant actor, and a hell of a nice guy. I have the right to badmouth the guy, as he's my distant cousin, but I'll stand up for him against anybody who puts him down.

Jedi and GL Corps both stole from Lensmen

    by jsarnold513

Back in the old pulp days of the 30s and 40s, there was a writer by the name of E.E. "Doc" Smith who came up with the idea of a huge space opera series revolving around intergalactic cops powered by "Lenses" who battle evil on a cosmic scale. The concepts of the GL Corps and Jedi were BOTH lifted from that source, even though the creators have long denied it for obvious reasons. Saying that Lucas stole the idea from GL Corps is like saying that C.S. Lewis stole the idea of Narnia from LOTR.

  • March 31, 2011, 7:25 p.m. CST

Honestly, GL could go either way

    by jsarnold513

The trailer had some great moments and some epic shots, but Ryan Reynolds seems really out of place. Playing Hal as a kind of goofy fratboy just doesn't seem right, whether he's "the ultimate alpha male" or not. The whole thing hinges on whether they get the emotional "feel" right, like the current Nolan Batman films and the other successful superhero flicks have done. A good balance between entertainment and respect for the material and archetypes being played out is very important. I'm not sure if GL has that balance, but I still want to see it.

    Worst Superhero Flick?

    by jsarnold513

With a crop of big time movies like this, being the "worst" of the bunch might not be such a bad thing. I'm sure the worst superhero flick of 2011 will be some under-the-radar-D2D thing that no one knows about or ever watches until a couple of stoners catch it on the SiFi Channel some Sunday afternoon.

There's NOTHING Campy About Current GL Comics

    by NeonFrisbee

Going back to at least 2005. It's all been pretty awesome, serious, well-written stuff. There's humor, of course (Larfleeze comes to mind), but it's not camp. Of course, I suppose the very idea of a Cosmic Space Force is implicitly campy, but the comics don't play it for camp. Leastways, not within recent memory.

    Lensman anime

    by DrMeyer

Neon, the anime was _very_ loosely based on Doc Smith's novels, and his daughter, Verna Smith Trestrail, sued the studio and won, but by then it was in wide distribution. The tv series went back to the books somewhat, but Verna kept fighting against what she saw as an illegal adaptation of her father's work. Here's what the Wiki page says: There is a Japanese Lensman anime, but it is more an imitation of Star Wars than a translation of the Lensman novels. Efforts to print translations of the associated manga in the United States in the early 1990s without payment of royalties to the Smith family were successfully blocked in court by Verna Smith Trestrail with the help of several California science fiction authors and fans. In addition, George Lucas admitted that Lensman was an influence, and with Green Lanterns named Arisia and Eddore, after the elder races in the Lensman novels, I'd say they've acknowledged the source material. It's not plagiarism if you do it with love, and in both cases I'd say the respect was obvious.
