GOD, THE DEVIL AND BOB

Published at:  Dec 24, 1999 5:47:50 AM CST

I like this idea. It's a bit like reality. Ya know... in Detroit, Bob the autoworker has a choice between the Tit Bar and Church.... Thousands of Bobs face this choice every day. We won't be deemed worthwhile if the show sticks to reality. :) Oh yeah, this is Harry. Don't worry, your faithful leader El Cosmico will again return to make me look like the hack that I am. Till then... you'll have to put up with me!

Hey hey kids. Just when you thought game shows were taking over, NBC
decides to launch a new show called "God, the Devil and Bob." The
premise is a new one at that. God and the Devil decide to get together
and see if the human race is worthwhile. So, God and the Devil decide
that Bob, a paranoid Detroit auto worker with a bad temper, is the
average guy whom they shall determine the worlds fate over. God's voice
will be supplied by James Garner. Playing the Devil will be Alan
Cumming. French Stewart will be playing Bob, and Elizabeth Taylor will
be playing Sarah, God's girlfriend. The half-hour series is due
sometime around Spring 2000. If "God, the Devil and Bob" is handled
well, we can be assured to hear a lot of gripes from the Christian
Coalition.

One you should have mentioned that the show is animated, and second this is, once again, very old news...man is the site really starting to slip or is it me? (don't answer that ;-)

It's really weird when I think about things....

    by the kid

because usually they happen. (Among other instances) One day I was thinking how unexpected it would be, and how much it would suck, if Kubrick died. Then, I check at AICN and....

But I was wondering what had happened to this series (Cinescape reported it months ago), and now it looks like it's still a go. Could be a cool cartoon.

    False "Bob"

    by perfect tommy

When I first saw the name of the only man who promises eternal salvation - or triple your money back! - placed next to those other wannabe deities, it made my third eye squint. The hole in my head started to bleed profusely. Dare they mock J.R. Bob Dobbs? Then I saw it was about some dupe of the con listening to voices in his head, and I began to relax. Praise "Bob"! X-Day is nearly upon us! Beware JHVH-1 and the X'ists!

Oh yeah, I did e-mail Harry and say this was an animation, but I forgot to put it in the original message. Anywho, go here for a picture of the show. www.godthedevilandbob.com
By the way, say goodbye to talk shows...more to come.

    Deliciously Evil...! But...

    by moviecrypt

If an outrageously cool animated primetime show like "Family Guy" can't find an audience, how is NBC gonna find "God, the Devil, and Bob" a profitable slot? Tape the first four shows, ladies and gentlemen... that may be all you ever see.

I visited Carsey Werner's new animation studio a few months back and I can honestly say this is one of the worst-designed, butt-ugliest animated shows I've ever seen. The characters were obviously designed by a moron who has never worked in animation before, (and if the designer has, then it's even more pathetic). It looks like some really badly drawn indie comic; not the type of characters that lend themselves easily to the art of animation. What's even more amazing is that the great animation designer Dan Haskett initially designed characters for this show, but Carsey-Werner, a virgin animation studio that doesn't know the first thing about making cartoons, threw out his work and went with the current abhorrent designs. This is not an isolated incident though. The quality of art (or lack of) in current animated series is an alarming trend. It has reached a point where listening to an animated show is more amusing, and ultimately more satisfying, than actually looking it at; and that's a direct result of cartoons being controlled by writers apathetic to the fact that they're working in a visual medium. South Park, Mission Hill, Family Guy, Dr. Katz -there is no more art in TV animation. In fact, there is hardly any animation in TV cartoons either. God, The Devil and Bob is another sorry piece of junk following this trend, and when this show fails (don't worry, it will), it's not because of its content, but because of its detestable lack of artistry.

Family Guy didn't find an audience because it was total crap. It was a perfect example of how to make a show with absolutely no appeal what so ever. It was based on an idea (lapooning the "american family") that has already been done perfectly for the last ten years on another show, the Simpsons. The only difference is that instead of theintelligent jokes and satire that the Simpsons uses to flesh out it's show, Family guy used totally unoriginal gimicks (genius babies and talking dogs) and worthless bad jokes that tried so desparately to be controversial. As for this show I just have to say that I think French Stewert is very annoying, and I don't like the choice of him as Bob. Also I know that it is just a comedic idea, but why would God let the Devil have anything to do with deciding the fate of humans? That would be like him admitting that Satan is his equal, wouldn't it? I also thought of the Church of the Subgenius when I saw the headline.

    What is "Good Animation"?

    by iolokus

there really hasn't been non-warner-brothers kind of animation on tv before "the simpsons." and things like "rocky and bullwinkle" weren't exactly the best in visual artistry. i don't know what your definition good animation is. how do you distinguish between "family guy" and "the simpsons"? it can't be realism that you're looking for. i don't think that's ever really been a characteristic in toons on tv.

  • Heck, while we're asking, why would God and the Devil team up against Job? And what about the Sunday-school story about the guy in Hell who gets God AND the Devil to AGREE to let him try to climb into Heaven, but falls back into Hell thanks to his uncompassionate attempts to kick his fellow damned souls off the rope ladder when they try to follow? (The implication in that story seemed to be that the Devil runs Hell for God.) I read somewhere that, in an earlier version of the Hebrew faith, the "devil" was actually a servant of God, sent to test the faithful. The enemy of Man, but not necessarily the enemy of God. Some Old Testament passages bear this out.
    ..............................
Anyway, to get back on topic, hasn't this show been in the works for a couple of years? It's not news to me, and the wait is making me lose interest.

Hey, their websites up. It's all in flash but they have a cool animation tour that shows how they put the show together. You can Send a Friend to Hell and send a message to God. Pretty Cool:
