TREK First, Ryan Later

Merrick again...

For a while now, Paramount's been working on a Jack Ryan origin story movie that would re-launch a younger iteration of Tom Clancy's character - with an eye towards Chris Pine taking the role.

This project has gone through a number of scripters and has, for a while, had LOST's Jack Bender attached as director (he was a director/Executive Producer on that show).

For a number of reasons, that Jack Ryan picture hasn't come together just right.  While it's not being canceled (although the movie is now looking for a different writer - and Deadline suggests it's feasible director Bender could depart the project), it sounds like Mr. Ryan is being shown the back seat to make room for the new STAR TREK movie sequel - which would return Pine to the role of Captain James T. Kirk in a film maybe/maybe not directed by J.J. Abrams. There had been some conjecture that the new Clancy movie might forge ahead before TREK - this will not happen now.

This said, there's still no firm indication when the TREK sequel will go before cameras.  And, within the last week or so, we heard from Boborci that no finished script is in place on that project - although it's sounding like plans still call for the movie to shoot this fall for a release next Summer.  We'll see...
