It uses Poledouris' score, but the film will feature music from Hans Zimmer, who I like... but nobody scores cleaved bodies in half like Basil.

    Online Trailers in DVD format.

    by darth siskel

I hope we start to see trailers online in .vob format (DVD Video).
A trailer like this one would be about 60mb as a vob file. That would be only 2-3 times bigger than a highres quicktime, but worth the wait! 5.1 audio!!
btw, Gladiator looks like it's going to be damn great!

I caught the trailer before Any
Given Sunday, the current gladiator movie, and it was friggin amazing. God I hope this movie lives up to expectations. There was also a trailer for The Perfect Storm, and that wave looked killer.

    Basil Peldouris is god

    by mickey finn

The music from the first Conan movie is soooo good. When I was at school, I used to listen to it obsessively. It opens with the old fuck from the movie going 'In the tiiime befoore the seeas draank Atlaantis...' Peldouris has done some other good scores in recent years (Starship Troopers leaps to mind). Come to think of it, Conan is quite an underrated film - it would be great if they rereleased it at cinemas. The sequel to Conan wasn't very good, but hey, fuck it. Anyways, I can't wait for Gladiator. I haven't seen the trailer, but I've seen some stills and Russell Crowe looks cool as hell. I get the feeling that given the film's scale, even if it's bad it'll be good, know what I mean?

That trailer just shot this movie up to my anticipated films of 2000 list. As some have mentioned before, there seems to be some great trailers out. The one for Romeo Must Die kicked serious ass, and I was really convinced that movie was gonna suck. Even if it still does, it'll still have Jet Li opening up a can o' whoop ass. The Perect Storm trailer is great too. Now if only they just kept running the teaser trailer for Gladiator and The Pefect Storm because eventually those full trailers are gonna come out and give everything away. Damn trailers!

This trailer kicks serious ass! I hope the film lives up to the trailer! Given the cast and crew, I'm sure it will. I've never wanted the holidays to pass so quickly! I'm totally psyched up for this. And I pray that Zimmer's score is half as good as Basil's Conan score. A powerful score will do wonders for a film like this.(stands on desk and commences pelvis-thrusts a-la Ace Ventura) Thanks for the early Christmas gift, Harry!

    Grandeur needs Grounding

    by nixons nighthawk

That trailer set the Hawk to a boil. Choked me to the eyeballs with blood lust. Made me pull my bayonet so quick I nicked my cheek. Blood ran red like it did in Korea, melted the snow beneath my feet. Hot, frothy. They're reaching for the passion of Hur, the grandeur of Lawrence, the steely eyed resolve of Heston at the mawing gape of the Red Sea. Dick would have approved. Dick was a big Heston, fan back before the hairpiece. Back when the jut of Charlton's jaw could make a python smile. But Mr. Scott, these kids, these days, they see through a different lense. Though the Group Theatre won't ring any of their bells, they live under Harold Clurman's shadow. Jimmy Dean and Brando pointed us towards motivation and character. We need the man beneath the lions head coat, we need this Crowe boy and your writing and direction to give us more than just the big picture. We want to feel the heart of this hero pounding in our on breast till we taste the iron in his mouth not the buttered popcorn in our own. Heart, heart I say as I shake the table with fists of thunder! Not just big pretty pictures! Even McCain agreed with me on that one. We discussed our own quiet glories in that little prison deep in the coiled heart of South East Asia. For the sake of his presidential bid he needs me to pull a little recon in Chechnya. Find out why that old wounded Red Bear just won't stop steppin' on freedom. It was the character that pulled me and McCain through. Believe me Mr. Scott, show the heart of a true hero like Johnny McCain you won't just entertain, you'll inspire!
I'm Nixon's Nighthawk, you know the rest.

    CONAN special edition

    by brendan3

Gladiator trailer looks cool, especially with the borrowed Conan score. Here's a little treat for all you CONAN THE BARBARIAN fans out there. (I'm talking about the 1982 John Milius one, not that cartoonish sequel with Arnold fighting half naked) Universal announced some time ago in an issue of Widescreen Review that, among other films, it is working on a Conan special edition DVD that will include audio commentary, deleted scenes, featurette, etc. This is still in the works though and probably won't see the light of day until Fall 2000 at the earliest.

Great trailer. But is anyone else noticing that the tendency to use another composer's music to sell a trailer is becoming more and more common? Hans Zimmer may be good, but Poledouris' soundtrack made "Conan." Don't get me wrong, there are some other things I liked a great deal about the Milius film (Sandahl Bergman, anyone?), but Basil's soundtrack was so much bigger than the movie. If it weren't for Harry, I would probably have gone in expecting to hear more of Poledouris in Gladiator. Tsk, tsk...

The First Time I saw this Trailer was during the opening night of "The Green Mile" together with the trailer of "The Perfect Storm" and this just like any other trailer has to be experienced in the theatre because it just doesn't do justice, especially the skipping pixels!!!

  • Don't get me wrong, the music for Conan the Barbarian Rox hard core, but why can't movie companies just release trailers or commercials with thier own original scores. You to Nintendo with your stupid Zelda 64 advertising. Well to the guy above, you have not even seen the Teaser trailer for the X-men and your already made up your mind that Gladitor will better than it. You may accually be surprise when the X-men trailer comes out. I have high hopes about that movie. But Gladitor looks VERRRRRRRY promising.

    The Death of Basil Poledouris...

    by discreetlogic

I'm a fairly quiet spectator here at AICN. I never really get riled-up over inflamatory fan-boy remarks and overwhlemed by the need to engage futile debates. However, the trailer for Gladiator looks awesome. The music for Conan is arguably one of the best soundtracks ever made for a movie that is a gem in genre that is riddled with garbage. But here is my problem: Hans Zimmer (according to IMDB) is slated to score. WHY NOT BASIL POLEDOURIS? Jesus, the effect in the trailer is awesome - why not use him? This pisses me off. Use the man, not some half-assed Michael Nyman wanna be.

Also, the music used on the original matrix trailer and used for the DVD menu was not on the soundtrack - does anyone know who did that?

    The Final soundtrack for GLADIATOR

    by brendan3

Since Dreamworks and Universal used the CONAN soundtrack for the Gladiator trailer, a lot of people are wondering what the actual soundtrack will be like. For those of you familiar with Ridley Scott's 1985 film LEGEND, you may remember that totally out of place high pitched Brian Ferry synthesizer pop ballad song at the end of the movie. That song is going to play loudly throughout GLADIATOR...........no, just kidding. But alot of people seem upset that they used the CONAN score on the teaser trailer. Well duh! The Gladiator score isn't complete and the marketing people needed something that would not only fit, but would also allow the viewers to make a subliminal association, so that they're thinking of "the days of high adventure" while watching their trailer. Plus both GLADIATOR and CONAN belong to Universal. That crappy Richard Gere movie FIRST KNIGHT also used the CONAN score on its teaser trailer so don't be fooled so quickly. LEGENDS OF THE FALL used LAST OF THE MOHICANS. I recently saw a promo for some cop/gangster period film that used MILLERS CROSSING. Listen carefully when you're watching teasers.

    Soundtrack swipes

    by dave_f

I realize previews crib bits of well-known soundtracks because their own scores aren't complete, but it's still one of my pet peeves. Worst thing is when they borrow from a particularly strong soundtrack (Conan for instance), and then the actual music turns out to be so much weaker. I remember a few years back when it seemed like every damn preview out there used a snippet of James Horner's battle music from Aliens. Hated that. Do the composers make any money when this happens?

Went to see Any Given Sunday and they showed the trailer for Gladiator. Now is it just me, or does anyone else get annoyed at the fact that there always seems to be two or three movies that get released on or around the same time of eachother? I realize that it is difficult to keep a secret in Hollywood and all (especially with tell-all gossip sites like this one in existance) but SHEESH! Come up with something original sometime!

    Other peoples music?

    by mdb

I can't believe how much everyone
is ripping on the studio for
    using Poledorius music in the
    trailer. Especially when the most
ripped of soundtrack of all time
for use in a trailer is the
    music from "Backdraft" which, by
the way, was written by Hans
Zimmer. I see at least four or
five trailers a year with the
backdraft score in it. The bottom
line is who cares as long as it
kicks ass. There is no practical
way for a studio to include the
actual score from a film in the
trailer as the film is most likely still deep in post
    production when the trailer is
    released, so just enjoy the
trailer and don't get so wrapped
    up in the little things.

Did you see other ancient Rome-set movies coming out along with Gladiator? Just curious... People have a way of ripping Ridley off (understatement of the millenium). From Blade Runner to Alien to Thelma & Louise, what director has been more ripped off? He was going to do a movie about the making of Citizen Kane and whaddaya know two other projects to do the same thing materialize. He does 1492, and whaddaya know (I still love that film, God damn it!)some crappy knock-off beats him to the theater. He was going to do a film about Tom Mix, and whaddaya know suddenly Hollywood wants to do two biopics on Tom Mix. Fucking back off Ridley Scott you brainless suits! And will cable tv stop trying to steal the thunder of every major movie event with some cheese-ball made-for-cable hurry-up job? I know, I'm dreaming. But I'm going to make one big Christmas wish for the next century...

    by vitiare

To reply to what "The Flea" said about copying Riddley Scott, it goes back to what I was saying about multiple movies of the same or similar topic.

There are a lot of spies in this industry and sites like this one dont help matters much. Everyone wants to have a blockbuster that makes a fortune, but they are so worried that what they come up with wont work. So what they do is grab an idea from something in production and run with it. "Ridley Scott is doing a gladiator film? Quick, lets make something similar and beat him off at the pass." Case in point: Volcano and Dante's Peak. Or Deep Impact and Armaggedon. They all copy eachother in the hopes of making it big. It drives me nuts. But the public doesnt seem to mind. They all seem to make money.

There's been an uproar regarding Gladiator's soundtrack. I know Hans Zimmerman isn't everybody's first pick for the movie, but there is a secret weapon to the score! Lisa Gerrard is doing the vocals and collaborated on most of the score. For those of you who are not familiar with her, she
