THE SIMPSONS’ Moe To Play THE THREE STOOGES’ Moe??
We’re now beyond the 10-year anniversary of AICN’s first story about the Farrelly Bros. (“Shallow Hal,” “Stuck On You,” “Fever Pitch,” “The Heartbreak Kid,” “Hall Pass”) writing and directing a Three Stooges movie.
Well, Deadline has the latest crop of actors who seem destined to play Moe, Larry and Curly in the feature, which will seek to emulate the team’s classic short subjects in three 27-minutes chunks (even though the original Columbia shorts ran more like 16-17 minutues).

* Will Sasso (“Mad TV,” “Shit My Dad Says”) is said to be a lock to play bald, barking Jerome “Curly” Howard.

* Hank Azaria, who plays Moe on “The Simpsons,” is said to be the “frontrunner” for Moe Howard.

* And in the head-scratchingest development of all, Billy West (whose Larry Fine impression is legendary) has apparently been shoved aside in favor of superhandsome James Marsden (“X-Men,” “Enchanted,” “Hop”). “As for the simpleton Larry, the name I am most often hearing is James Marsden,” writes Deadline’s Mike Fleming.
In my view the Brothers Howard were leagues funnier than the Brothers Farrelly; it’s now more difficult to see how this project hopes to do justice.
Find all of Deadline’s story on the matter here.

see a movie that ruins the stooges.

After There's Something About Marry, the Farrelly brothers have never made a great movie again!

Paul Giamatti seems like a better Larry than Marsden.

Every time the ad loads on a page it opens full screen and i cant get it to close even by clicking on the close button! Harry, fix this with your advertisers please!
-
i see no way that the three stooges remake could be good
larry the cable guy looks alot like curly when his beard is shaved off, not that i like him more then sasso he just looks more like the guy -
It's gotta be at least a decade or more. I did enjoy Kingpin and Dumb and Dumber back in the day.
I was more interested in the Stooges movie when Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro were rumored to be in it. -
Now, I don't really care.
-
It's been done so you have to click it twice to get rid of it. It's called advertising, and it gives Harry more money than you do. Sorry.
-
i see many complain about ads here and i NEVER see them. for some reason it doesnt affect me at all. now i do see those sorta ads on many other sites i visit but never here. i wonder if its because i'm in canada and those ads are just targeting american IPs? anyway i just wanted to say SUCKER!!! lol kidding, i DO feel your pain as they are quite annoying. i get them a lot on bloody disgusting and comingsoon.net and yeah...the little x often doesnt work as someone else said.
-
this used to have a-list names attached to it like jim carrey, russel crowe, benicio del toro, sean penn .... now it seems as though the casting call has skipped the b-list entirely and plummeted to the f-list. if this is the best cast they can assemble, they should just scrap the project now and salvage their losses.
-
I've never seen one damned ad on this site. Adblock Plus FTMFW!
-
That dude's just funny, plain and simple.
I always have faith in Hank Azaria, and he's certainly a couple notches above Johnny Knoxville; but I'll be slightly disappointed in anyone not named Benicio del Toro being cast as Moe. That was just a stroke of genius.
Marsden as Larry is a head-scratcher. He must've had one hell of an audition. And as much as I love the idea of Billy West as Larry, the man's almost 60. That's just not going to happen.
I've heard Justin Timberlake's name bandied about for the Larry role, and I'd personally love to see that. He's got a knack for dumb, goofy comedy. -
Marsden as Larry - best laugh I've had thus far this year. A shame I can't say the same about what would happen were I to watch a film where he was playing Larry, my favorite Stooge.

With the Farrellys directing that means the Stooges will be throwing jizz at each other
by indycollector
They claim to be fans so let's hope they "get" that the Stooges weren't raunchy. But I'm going to bet they don't understand that.
-
There have got to be numerous people out there who can do amazing Stooges impressions.
I am really glad that this is not a Stooges biopic, though. I can’t stand biopics. -

"if they wanna take Akira from us, lets take away the 3 Stooges! " You mean like Cedric the Entertainer and...whoever the hell that was did with the Honeymooners?
-
Bill Chott is Curly. Look him up on IMDB or check his Curly tape on youtube.
-
I'd be interested in a biopic but I always hated the stooges, seemed to promote bullying.
-
It seems insulting to try to force an actual person’s life into the confines of a movie plot and to reduce that person into some sort of hollywood archetype. I would be interested in a Stooges documentary, or in what the Farrellys are doing here, but I really dislike biopics.

Yea where did James Mardsen come from? I do like the other two potential casts tho.
by mrjonz72
Always like Mardsen tho..got shafted a few times (The X-men movies) just didn't think of him in this type of role...maybe he'll surprise me in this role
-
We need this about as badly as we needed a remake of Planet of the Apes. When the original is perfect, why bother???
-
Stooges in high society, Stooges in the Cirque du Soleil.
-
David Paymer is the obvious choice.
-
sylvester stallone as Moe, Jason Statham as Larry and Steve Austin as Curly. Thats some real comic violence bitch
-
no david boreanez? and marsden? wtf.
-
He really disappears into a character. It's hard to see his work in "X-Men," "Enchanted" and "Hairspray" and believe it's all the same guy.
Although personally I think Kevin Spacey would make a great Larry as well. He's an unbelievable mimic.
PAD -
made a damn good Curly in that TV movie Mel Gibson's company produced.

JAMES MARSEN IS OK DOING COMEDY, BUT HE WOULD BE OUT OF PLACE AS LAR
by meadowe
He was coo' in Enchanted and in Modern Family, but both those roles he was a pretty boy....he may have been funny in the audition but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be funny in the whole movie.
-
He plays a great dick older brother in the tradition of Chet from Weird Science. But he isn't Larry. Oh my beautiful Strativarius!!
-
He basically had Stooge antics in the Evil Dead films. Raimi could shoot a great Stooges flick.
-
Larry was always the slick huckster/ladies man type who just happened to always catch the brunt of Moe's anger and Curly's idiocy. It could be pretty crazy.
-
I am sure this will be a wonderful viewing experience.
-
Farley
Hartman
Lovitz -
So suck one.
-
But marsden? I hate to say this but why not cast Bill Hader as Moe, bobby moynehan as curly, and will forte as Larry? Just go SNL.
-
The original Stooges comedy just flies over the heads of today's audiences? It's too enmeshed with long-forgotten pop culture? It speaks in the tropes of a century that children have no memory of? They must have screened these "films" to research audiences and found that people today just stare in confusion.

The sheer fact that absolutely NOBODY can ever with any degree of success fully envision any other actors in these roles is a testament to the fact that this stillborn idea should have never been conceived.
The idea of NOT doing a respectful biopic but a "re-fucking-boot" of these characters makes my fucking vomit want to fucking vomit.
The hollywood idea factory is indeed bankrupt.
And while I don't condone this idea AT ALL, all of the fantasy casting does have it's allure. And I must admit, as long as it's fantasy casting, for a property that should never EVER see the light of day, I too am tempted to do it as well.
So off the top of my head, I would suggest using REAL comics, real comedians with stage presence and a knowledge of how to play to an audiance, and NOT actors, or comedians who are mostly actors. Afterall that's what the Stooges were to begin with. Vaudevillians in the classic style.
So as long as it's just for fun:
Moe - Patton Oswalt
Larry - Louis CK
Curly - Larry the Cable Guy
All of these guys are now at the top of their game and have risen through the ranks and honed their skills in the field by studying other comedians. Therefore they bring to the table a certain comic sensibility, understanding, and timing, that actor/comedians or simple actors just absolutely don't have.
Sure there are some hight differences to be accounted for, the Moe, Larry, and Curly were all roughly the same hight, but that's something that can be adjusted for in camera, or by some other means.
So there you have it. I've played along. Now don't get me wrong, I DON'T want to see this happen in any way shape or form, but I'm not such a purist that I can't appreciate a little fan casting now and then.
What do you think? -
Nobody wants to see comedy that's funny.
-
It's not like anyone will be replacing the originals. James Marsden isn't what I would have pictured as Larry, but I highly doubt the role will define his career or that he'll be eclipsing Larry Fine or something. No doubt this was for that WTF quotient that Hollywood now loves to do with casting, but I hope it's not an embarrassment for Marsden either.

jethrobodine: overall I agree, but you know they just can't resist remaking every damn movie ever made
by lv_426
If they have to make this, then they should have gotten Sam Raimi to direct.
Also, to market this new Stooge film they should show some of the best of the original Three Stooges short films before the trailers of other films leading up to the release date of the remake (sort of in the same way they showed some of those Animatrix short films in the theater before the trailers to promote the Matrix sequels).
This way they can expose people to the classic and original Stooges while also smartly marketing the new film.
It would sure beat having to endure all the lame movie trivia questions and annoying commercials that they always show these days before the trailers start. -
come on people with the current state of cable do people know who the 3 stooges are? or Gilligan, the Brady Bunch, Leave it to Beaver and I Love Lucy? the days when these shows were a common part of pop culture is LONG since gone, there is a reason why the film versions of Bewitched, Leave it to Beaver, etc tanked and it wasn't JUST because the films sucked.....
-
The Three Robotic Stooges.
-
because he was the rock that held things down to earth in 'Enchanted'. It was part of what made Amy Adams so funny. Larry was always the most sensible of the Stooges, though that is not much of a compliment. Are they going to do 'The Three Stooges Meet Hercules?'
-
That's robonic, biiiiiig difference(jk). I love me some Stooges and this is not sounding good.
-
Speaks Larry Fine to me. Unless he can do a REALLY great impression none of us are aware of, I don't think so. Someone earlier mentioned Will Forte. That might work if he can get the mannerisms down pat.
-
It ain't.
-
....my Uncle pulled down his pantaloons to show me his bush. He sure was proud of that bush, and with good reason. That thing was huge.
-
I ain't goin' with him...I'll go with Curly.
-
These guys? Decidedly meh.
-
If you wanna try something different and something old, really go for it.
-
That means that the audience will be repeatedly poked in the eyes by new school Larry, Curly, and Moe.
I suppose that will be the closest we will ever get to having our eyeballs fucked by a movie. Eyeballs fingered? -
Now that's an interesting idea. It'll NEVER happen tho. Too many egos could risk gettin bruised.
-
Done as an anthology film made up of three 30 minute segments. Each segment would be directed by a different filmmaker.
Directed by: Sam Raimi, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Written by: Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski (Man on the Moon/Ed Wood), Joss Whedon, Harold Ramis, and Mel Brooks
Starring: Ray Stevenson, after eating a lot of Twinkies and Big Macs (Curly), John C. Reilly (Larry), and Michael Shannon (Moe)*
* If they can work Shemp in there somewhere, then he should be played by Ron Perlman. -
I'm 36. There were still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Stooges shorts growing up in the 80s. I didn't like them then, and even less now. Recently, after many years of no Stooge exposure, I ended up reading like 4 pages about their story and history. After that, I scurried over to youtube to watch some Stooges, thinking perhaps I was being too hard on them, or maybe after not seeing them for years I'd see it in a new light and appreciate it. Umm....no. I just don't understand the appeal. I live in TN, if I want to see idiots making fools of themselves in public, I just have to leave my apt and...look around. Not to mention the co actors in these shorts seem so fake, so cartoony. Different strokes, I suppose....
-
Enchanted, Sex Drive, some of those tv shows. Sure, he's just another random asshole in romantic comedies and doesn't bring much to the table in dramas, but when he cuts loose it is gold.

All this had going for it in the beginning was the cast of unlikely players - now that that is gone
by professor_monster
-- this whole idea stinks to high heaven. Hank Azaria is about as C list as you can get. He took the job as Gargamel in that new Smurfs shit can coming out soon - and honestly Curly is like the Ark - people can try and figure out it's secrets, but it's untouchable and better off left alone. This has to be the dumbest idea Hollywood has circle jerked to in a long time.

It doesn't matter...the Farrelly's are terrible now
by melgibsoncalledmethenword
It's been forever since they made a watchable movie. It sounds like they're trying to remake Dumb and Dumber.

James Gandolfini should be Moe

than see this stupid fucking thing. Only god damned idiots would remake something that was stupid and never funny in the first place.

No way this is a real project

there was a great article in empire about the three stooges
by emeraldboy
fairly recently. great stuff. and all the violence you saw on screen with the three stooges was real. unlike laurel and hardy and the marx bros which was planned and staged. It was violence and not slapstick.

Just get it over with already.

So I don't see why this needs to be remade.
-
ENCHANTED, SEX DRIVE, SUGAR & SPICE...hell, even in that DEATH AT A FUNERAL remake, but, I swear to God, I just don't see Larry Fine when I look at him.
Someone suggested Paul Giamatti. I say, why the hell not? -
She could pull this off!
-
I want them to stay true to Hanna Barbera's three stooges canon.
-
about the three stooges. sorry to go all judge judy but the eye pokes were real, when moe hit curly on the head, he really hit curly on the head and there was one scene where curly gets knifed in the head. there was nothing fake about that. but audiences didnt give a shit that the howerd bros slapped, poked, gauged and thumped each other on screen, they laughed it up and lapped it up. but anyone who looks into there story properly will know that there was nothing remotely funny about the three stooges. and there is a connection to the mob boss micky cohn. who also ran mgm.
-
He's a huge fan of The 3 Stooges and he certainly to make violent movies
-
I cant see this working. unless its a cartoon or 3d or something.

gibson, azaria and will sasso. are in a shop looking for presents for their kids and they stumble upon three puppets or dolls whic are larry, curly and moe. and its halloween and there is a curse on the puppets or dolls and the moon triggers, the curse which causes the puppets or dolls to come alive and larry, curly and moe's puppets or dolls take control of the Gibson, Azaria and will sasso. violence ensues.
-
He's PERFECT!
-
I vote again for Giamatti. Or if you want a commedian, how about Jim Norton.

Remember all the box office that the "Little Rascals" reboot did a couple of years ago. Me neither.
Somebody in LaLa Land has been sniffing coke off a whore's ass and watching TCM again. -
It came out in 1999, DTV.
Bronson Pinchot and Gailord Sartain were the nephews of Laurel and Hardy.
No, it wasn't very good at all. -
Farce is good. Slapstick is great. But, um, aside from the aging babyboomers, who's going to go see this?
No one remembers The Three Stooges anymore. No modern over-protective parent wants to encourage their children to hit each other. No one is going to laugh at a pie-in-the-face joke right now.
Sure it's escapism at its finest, but this is drivel. I'm glad I'm not putting my name on this one.
Too Risky! -

Please let this project just go away. Seriously, James Marsden?
by joesixpack
Why not just put Penelope Cruz in the role? Why not try to get Wilford Brimley? The Farrelly Brothers haven't made an even halfway decent film since 1998. This will be a sad, sad failure.
-
Uh, I think there's absolutely zero chance of that idea actually working. I almost think the Farrelly brothers are doing this as a publicity stunt to get one of their other movies funded. Why not just take $50 million dollars in ones, pile 'em up, pour a bunch of gasoline and put a match to it? And hopefully the script and any pre-production materials will be tossed on the pile. And any scripts and materials from future Farrelly projects. And every single copy of The Heartbreak Kid.
-
And fuck it up? I think he turned the Stooges into fundamental christians

Even Hank Azaria is too handsome, tall and well built for Moe. Yes, makeup and wardrobe can do miracles, but they've got a lot of work to do. But I do trust Azaria's mimic skills. Yes Marsden can be very funny, but Larry? Larry?
Sasso? Spot on. If Fox ever released a DVD of MadTV The Best Of Will Sasso, I'd buy it. He had some great bits on that show.
-
I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean when you say they were'nt remotely funny. Do you mean that they were injured a lot in making their films?
Not sure I agree about the eye poking. In Mel's version they had a short scene where Moe shows Curly how they don't actually poke each other in the eye sockets, and if you look closely at the originals you can see Moe usually pokes the forehead.
But a lotta stuff *was* real. Like when Moe was standing on a table and Curly put a board on top of the table and sawed it (and the table) in half. When Moe spun around the table collapsed and he fell *hard*. In his autobiography Moe stated that he broke some ribs in that fall. -

when I was a teenager I loved bottom and thought it was hilarious. i loved the physicality of ade and rik mayalls work. and I also loved the young ones. ade edmonson vivan was a brilliantly perfomed character. mad and utterly anarchic. and before anyone gets the wrong idea bottom was a show created and concieved by rik Mayall and ade edmonson. loved mayalls work on blackadder.
