THE SIMPSONS’ Moe To Play THE THREE STOOGES’ Moe??

Published at:  Mar 26, 2011 4:29:16 PM CDT

I am Hercules!!

We’re now beyond the 10-year anniversary of AICN’s first story about the Farrelly Bros. (“Shallow Hal,” “Stuck On You,” “Fever Pitch,” “The Heartbreak Kid,” “Hall Pass”) writing and directing a Three Stooges movie.

Well, Deadline has the latest crop of actors who seem destined to play Moe, Larry and Curly in the feature, which will seek to emulate the team’s classic short subjects in three 27-minutes chunks (even though the original Columbia shorts ran more like 16-17 minutues).

* Will Sasso (“Mad TV,” “Shit My Dad Says”) is said to be a lock to play bald, barking Jerome “Curly” Howard.

* Hank Azaria, who plays Moe on “The Simpsons,” is said to be the “frontrunner” for Moe Howard.

* And in the head-scratchingest development of all, Billy West (whose Larry Fine impression is legendary) has apparently been shoved aside in favor of superhandsome James Marsden (“X-Men,” “Enchanted,” “Hop”). “As for the simpleton Larry, the name I am most often hearing is James Marsden,” writes Deadline’s Mike Fleming.

In my view the Brothers Howard were leagues funnier than the Brothers Farrelly; it’s now more difficult to see how this project hopes to do justice.

Find all of Deadline’s story on the matter here.

It's gotta be at least a decade or more. I did enjoy Kingpin and Dumb and Dumber back in the day.

this used to have a-list names attached to it like jim carrey, russel crowe, benicio del toro, sean penn .... now it seems as though the casting call has skipped the b-list entirely and plummeted to the f-list. if this is the best cast they can assemble, they should just scrap the project now and salvage their losses.

    LOVE the Will Sasso casting...

    by tlyel37

That dude's just funny, plain and simple.

I always have faith in Hank Azaria, and he's certainly a couple notches above Johnny Knoxville; but I'll be slightly disappointed in anyone not named Benicio del Toro being cast as Moe. That was just a stroke of genius.

Marsden as Larry is a head-scratcher. He must've had one hell of an audition. And as much as I love the idea of Billy West as Larry, the man's almost 60. That's just not going to happen.
I've heard Justin Timberlake's name bandied about for the Larry role, and I'd personally love to see that. He's got a knack for dumb, goofy comedy.

The original Stooges comedy just flies over the heads of today's audiences? It's too enmeshed with long-forgotten pop culture? The sheer fact that...

    by jethrobodine

The sheer fact that absolutely NOBODY can ever with any degree of success fully envision any other actors in these roles is a testament to the fact that this stillborn idea should have never been conceived.

The idea of NOT doing a respectful biopic but a "re-fucking-boot" of these characters makes my fucking vomit want to fucking vomit.

The hollywood idea factory is indeed bankrupt.

And while I don't condone this idea AT ALL, all of the fantasy casting does have it's allure. And I must admit, as long as it's fantasy casting, for a property that should never EVER see the light of day, I too am tempted to do it as well.

So off the top of my head, I would suggest using REAL comics, real comedians with stage presence and a knowledge of how to play to an audiance, and NOT actors, or comedians who are mostly actors. Afterall that's what the Stooges were to begin with. Vaudevillians in the classic style.

So as long as it's just for fun:

    Moe - Patton Oswalt
    Larry - Louis CK
Curly - Larry the Cable Guy

All of these guys are now at the top of their game and have risen through the ranks and honed their skills in the field by studying other comedians. Therefore they bring to the table a certain comic sensibility, understanding, and timing, that actor/comedians or simple actors just absolutely don't have.

Sure there are some hight differences to be accounted for, the Moe, Larry, and Curly were all roughly the same hight, but that's something that can be adjusted for in camera, or by some other means.

So there you have it. I've played along. Now don't get me wrong, I DON'T want to see this happen in any way shape or form, but I'm not such a purist that I can't appreciate a little fan casting now and then.

    What do you think?

Well it's not like this will be THE new Three Stooges

    by drath

It's not like anyone will be replacing the originals. James Marsden isn't what I would have pictured as Larry, but I highly doubt the role will define his career or that he'll be eclipsing Larry Fine or something. No doubt this was for that WTF quotient that Hollywood now loves to do with casting, but I hope it's not an embarrassment for Marsden either.

    Reply to Talkback

  • If they have to make this, then they should have gotten Sam Raimi to direct.

Also, to market this new Stooge film they should show some of the best of the original Three Stooges short films before the trailers of other films leading up to the release date of the remake (sort of in the same way they showed some of those Animatrix short films in the theater before the trailers to promote the Matrix sequels).

This way they can expose people to the classic and original Stooges while also smartly marketing the new film.

It would sure beat having to endure all the lame movie trivia questions and annoying commercials that they always show these days before the trailers start.

    by daredrummer

I'm 36. There were still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Stooges shorts growing up in the 80s. I didn't like them then, and even less now. Recently, after many years of no Stooge exposure, I ended up reading like 4 pages about their story and history. After that, I scurried over to youtube to watch some Stooges, thinking perhaps I was being too hard on them, or maybe after not seeing them for years I'd see it in a new light and appreciate it. Umm....no. I just don't understand the appeal. I live in TN, if I want to see idiots making fools of themselves in public, I just have to leave my apt and...look around. Not to mention the co actors in these shorts seem so fake, so cartoony. Different strokes, I suppose....

about the three stooges. sorry to go all judge judy but the eye pokes were real, when moe hit curly on the head, he really hit curly on the head and there was one scene where curly gets knifed in the head. there was nothing fake about that. but audiences didnt give a shit that the howerd bros slapped, poked, gauged and thumped each other on screen, they laughed it up and lapped it up. but anyone who looks into there story properly will know that there was nothing remotely funny about the three stooges. and there is a connection to the mob boss micky cohn. who also ran mgm.

    by emeraldboy

gibson, azaria and will sasso. are in a shop looking for presents for their kids and they stumble upon three puppets or dolls whic are larry, curly and moe. and its halloween and there is a curse on the puppets or dolls and the moon triggers, the curse which causes the puppets or dolls to come alive and larry, curly and moe's puppets or dolls take control of the Gibson, Azaria and will sasso. violence ensues.

Hollywood is going to reboot all the 30's comedy teams

    by iamanreborn

    The Marx Brothers
    The Dead End Kids
    The Ritz Brothers
    Stepin' Fechit
    Ma N Pa Kettle

Remember all the box office that the "Little Rascals" reboot did a couple of years ago. Me neither.

They DID Redo Laurel and Hardy...

    by the_dreaded_rear_admiral

It came out in 1999, DTV.
Bronson Pinchot and Gailord Sartain were the nephews of Laurel and Hardy.
No, it wasn't very good at all.

Is there still a market for this?

    by beyondstatic

Farce is good. Slapstick is great. But, um, aside from the aging babyboomers, who's going to go see this?

No one remembers The Three Stooges anymore. No modern over-protective parent wants to encourage their children to hit each other. No one is going to laugh at a pie-in-the-face joke right now.

Sure it's escapism at its finest, but this is drivel. I'm glad I'm not putting my name on this one.

Please let this project just go away. Seriously, James Marsden?

    by joesixpack

Why not just put Penelope Cruz in the role? Why not try to get Wilford Brimley? The Farrelly Brothers haven't made an even halfway decent film since 1998. This will be a sad, sad failure.

Oh yeah, and the 3 featurettes?

    by joesixpack

Uh, I think there's absolutely zero chance of that idea actually working. I almost think the Farrelly brothers are doing this as a publicity stunt to get one of their other movies funded. Why not just take $50 million dollars in ones, pile 'em up, pour a bunch of gasoline and put a match to it? And hopefully the script and any pre-production materials will be tossed on the pile. And any scripts and materials from future Farrelly projects. And every single copy of The Heartbreak Kid.

    by openthepodbaydoorshal

Even Hank Azaria is too handsome, tall and well built for Moe. Yes, makeup and wardrobe can do miracles, but they've got a lot of work to do. But I do trust Azaria's mimic skills. Yes Marsden can be very funny, but Larry? Larry?

Sasso? Spot on. If Fox ever released a DVD of MadTV The Best Of Will Sasso, I'd buy it. He had some great bits on that show.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean when you say they were'nt remotely funny. Do you mean that they were injured a lot in making their films?

Not sure I agree about the eye poking. In Mel's version they had a short scene where Moe shows Curly how they don't actually poke each other in the eye sockets, and if you look closely at the originals you can see Moe usually pokes the forehead.

But a lotta stuff *was* real. Like when Moe was standing on a table and Curly put a board on top of the table and sawed it (and the table) in half. When Moe spun around the table collapsed and he fell *hard*. In his autobiography Moe stated that he broke some ribs in that fall.

when I was a teenager I loved bottom and thought it was hilarious. i loved the physicality of ade and rik mayalls work. and I also loved the young ones. ade edmonson vivan was a brilliantly perfomed character. mad and utterly anarchic. and before anyone gets the wrong idea bottom was a show created and concieved by rik Mayall and ade edmonson. loved mayalls work on blackadder.

His impression of Randy Newman brings me to tears of doubled-over laughter.

Marsden HAS to be some kind of weird Farrelly Bros. joke.
