Episode One on DVD'
Hey folks, I know some of you could care less about THE PHANTOM MENACE's eventual release on DVD, but for geeks like me (and quite a few others) we legitimately really care about this, and plead with Master Lucas to make it be so. Here's the latest rundown....
Harry & Friends,
Lucasfilm is going with TECHNICOLOR to handle the VHS release of SW:Ep1
instead of the company DELUXE
which usually handles Fox releases. Why should we care? Well there is
speculation that this brings us closer to
the possibilty of a DVD release in the near future.
"However, others suspect Lucasfilms
engineered the
transfer and that DVD replication
was a key factor.
"Lucas is looking for an integrated
supplier," an
observer notes.
The producer-director hasn’t
committed any of the
"Star Wars" titles to DVD. But his
caution may be
evaporating as the installed base
of players tops 4
million and vaults toward 10
million to 12 million by
2001."

First, note that the article (which I linked to & read) is off by about a million. And a writer for a mag called "VideoStore" damn well ought to know this! But the latest CEA figures put DVD sales in the US as of 12/10/99 at about 5,051,879. And growing at about 100,000-150,000 a week (at least through the holidays). As to the main content of the story, here's something to think about. Lucas has been less-than-forthcoming about his DVD plans, yet some say he's a big fan of the technology (as he is with all technology). But if his company has been using this outfit called "Deluxe" for 20 years to dub their home videos and wanted a change because they don't dub DVD's, just cassettes...well, let me just say this. You are a big company in any industry and you subcontract a major (REQUIRED) service to someone who's tops in their field and they don't provide everything you need or don't do it well enough. You want to look at switching the contract to their competitor. If you tip your hand publicly that you NEED the kind of service that the old supplier doesn't do (and can't start to do without a major time/dollar investment) then you risk the old supplier realizing that they won't be your supplier for long. Then the quality they provide slips right down the toilet. Well, you are in a bad situation because you still depend on them because the new supplier isn't in place yet and your old supplier doesn't care because their losing your money anyway. And your consumers don't blame the invisible-to-them supplier of the service; they blame YOU! Get it? The second that George Lucas said previous to this that he's going DVD then at that time "Deluxe" suspects that they no longer will be making the VHS stuff for Lucas. Depending on what other services Deluxe may provide for Lucas, this might put Lucas in a tight spot. So maybe old George has been coy until he could get around to engineering this changeover from "Deluxe" to "Technicolor". Hiding his plans to the public so as not to tip his hands to suppliers until he was ready to have all his bases well covered. I'm not positive that this has much to do with the delay, but it's a possibility. I work in the computer industry and am involved with a similar situation right now (I work for the company in Technicolor's position). Everthing is hush hush until the day we go live, and THEN the guys selling us the new contract will tell the old contract holder that they've lost the business. That's just what's necessary, unfortunately, in the world of big business. And, like it or not, movies IS business.

We may get TMP on DVD soon-big fucking deal! It sucked in the theatres and it will suck at home. At least, at home, I can FF through the Jar Jar and Anikin stuff. Unfortunately, that doesn't leave much to watch.
Another thing-what does Lucas (supposedly) mean by waiting for the technology to allow him to make the DVD's special by adding trailers, interviews, behind-the-scenes stuff, etc? The last time I checked, they can do that already. I can name a lot of discs that have that stuff right now. That explanation is just bullshit.
Finally, I have to wonder why both Lucas and Spielberg are skittish about releasing their films on DVD. They had no problen putting them on laserdisc-a format that never really cought on with the mainstream public. Certainly not to the level that DVD has. Their complaint about being able to record from DVD's doesn't hold water because it was always possible to record from laser. They never had a problem with that.
Oh well, who cares anyway. I have their good stuff on laser. I don't need to wait for them to get off their asses and embrace DVD.
And TMP-Lucas can shove that piece of shit right up his ass! -
Such negativity. I didn't know a little tidbit about a DVD release could insite such anger from people who could just move on to something else if they're not interested instead of freaking out on the messengers. It happens I was interested but I am also curious about that last sentence: "Rumor has it TPM will be just that will a special edition disk coming in about a year." What does that mean? Did Jar Jar write that?
-
As I understand it, the main reason for going to blue lasers is doing HDVD (high def DVD). So it could just be that he only wants to release them when he can do high def instead of DVD's current resolution (which, while much better than VHS, is not up to the level of HDTV). Of course, you probably won't see that technology available until about 2002, so if that's what they're waiting for, it's going to be a while.
-
Great so we get more compressed on DVD.So we get the outakes with Jar Jar and most of the story that was edited out so more toys could be sold.Wow! Lucas not to mention Spielberg are such Selfish asses. They make all these films that people want and then they dont release them. Thanks guys.

Reagrding what belongs in this section: Isn't COAXIAL just suposed to refer to any kind of home entertainment? This isn't the first time video or DVD news was on here. Unfotunately, TV is filled with 99% garbage (compared to film's 90%), so there probably isn't a reason to have a TV only section. Well, we got through two posts before someone started trashing Phantom Menace--is that a new record? Man, if I hated the movie that much I wouldn't read DVD release news about it. But as it was pointed out above, people are looking for a reason to hate Lucas from any angle possible. Well in the meantime, everyone can by the American Graffiti DVD and get over their hang-ups. Personally I'd be surprised if TPM came out on DVD in April. I don't agree with the strategy, but they're only hurting themselves. I would definitely pay up to $50 for a black market DVD if I knew I couldn't buy another one for 6 years. That's idiotic. And won't HDTV DVD's need a whole new format of players? I wouldn't expect America to be buying 5 million HDTV DVDS withing the next five years, it's amazing regualar DVDs got this popular. At least give us the Indiana Jones film, I don't care if there's only a Karen Allen commentary on there.
-
I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I love Phantom Menace and blindly buy whatever versions spill out of Lucasfilm. And I just had to say... that post was fucking hilarious.
-
I think WE WILL get the DVD in a few months. They were saying not till 2005 months ago, but the market is alot bigger now. DVD is here to stay with or without TPM. If they release on crappy VHS, there is no reason not to do a DVD now. I would love to hear a good reason out of Lucas. He would make tons of money from the standard movie now, then rake it in again in 2005 with the Collector's Edition, with the blue/red/purple laser technology or energon cubes or whatever the hell we're using to watch movies.
-
A version of "The Phantom Menace" with no effects added in. That would be a lot of blue.
-
And possibly some off-screen voices (heheh, Liam Neeson arguing with his invisible friend in Jedi costume.....I never thought I'd see the day.). And Lucas has said in no uncertain terms that he wants to make the standard to which no other DVD's can match (except for Lord of the Rings, possibly).
-
Now, first of all, I would really love TPM to be released on DVD in April. Unfortunately, I think this is only a rumor and will never become reality. I appreciate the fact that Lucas is trying to make all six and then make an incredible box set on DVD, but I would still love to have my very own DVD of the best film of the year. Now, I still love laserdiscs and it will still be a pleasure to enjoy TPM on this wonderful format. Which brings me to another topic of discussion. Does anyone know where the fuck I can get the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition on widescreen laserdisc?! Or even widescreen VHS?!!! They don't sell them anywhere anymore and I'm desperate! Please, if anyone has any information regarding the whereabouts of this item, you will have saved the life of a fellow human being. PLEASE!! HELP!!!
uh...TPM RULES!!! ok -
Seeing how the only show on TV worth watching is THE SIMPSONS, can you make the Coaxial nothing but DVD news? Im not being sarcastic. I fucking hate TV. I only read the Coax when its DVD news. Dont listen to that loser who said that MOST people arent interested. We are. TV is for slaves. DVD rocks. By the way, this news reminds me a lot of the TalkBack we had a few weeks ago concerning the idea of STAR WARS: THE L'AUTEUR EDITIONS. Dont worry, loyal fans (yes, now im being sarcastic), the new editions are in the works. Ill keep all you nutjobs posted. And this is for Nordling, if he's reading: Thanks, man. Youre a genius for spotting genius! ;)
-
It's George Lucas that owes me an apology. In fact, he owes the whole world an apology for making us wait 16 years for a new STAR WARS film-only to give us garbage like "The Phantom Menace".
Personally, I don't care if this film ever gets released on DVD.
Actually, I hope it never does. That way, it won't stink up the DVD aisle at Best Buy. -
What is the "flawed S.F. premise"
of The Matrix ?
GEC's dumbass wrote: "I was bored with all that "3-D" sfx from endless commercials on tv long before I ever saw The Matrix"
I guess the way bullet-time was used in The Matrix was a waste then? You stupid loser.
Did you go to see Bicentenial Man again, so you could masterbate to Robin Williams' image? I hear it's getting alot of repeat business from you, but the ushers are tired of cleaning up your messes. GEC, (what does G.E.C. stand for anyway? I'm sure it's brilliant)I'm bored of your worthless opinions and your attacks of other peoples' posts, so go blow your father or something you'd find productive.

all of the extreme star wars fans could have never enjoyed episode 1 anyway. This is because they have to many fond memories of the old series. The fist three star wars movies had flat acting, and bad dialog. Come on people they were based on saturday morning serials for crying out loud! But despite this many of my genration myself included adore these movies with undying affection. We are adults now so it would not matter how good the the phantom menace was it would not have created the same impact it did when we were children. I feel some fans hate the film because it conflicts with their happy memories of the earlier series. The phantom menace does have minor flaws, but the film is still a drastic improvement over the horrible plotless kiddie fest Return of The Jedi. Some of Return of the Jedi's cuteness vomits over into The Phantom Menace in the form of Jar Jar. ROTJ felt like the muppets take star wars. PM retains a bit of that. In conclusion all the star wars movies are just that movies not life changing experiences. I will not be writing any more posts on this subject. grow up and live your lives.

when it arrives, it arrives. There are far more better films out there that deserve a release! M'kay!
-
What Lucas will soon see (if he hasn't already) is that DVD technology has now become an integrated part of the home entertainment medium. His "holding out" would make sense a year ago, when maybe one out of every four movies was released to DVD. Now, nearly every movie is. By the end of the year, every recent big movie will be on DVD except Star Wars? I doubt it. He'll either release it day and date with the VHS version, or he'll wait til the next holiday season when all the people who already went and bought it on VHS will have to go and buy it on DVD. Either way, it will be out before 2001. (Although I think the true feature-packed SW DVDs are a ways off)
-
I'd just like to point out that George Lucas is well known for secrecy regarding "Star Wars," and I have little doubt that false information is often circulated regarding these films to prevent the leakage of the truth, thereby giving the fans more of what they want: endless speculation followed by many a surprise. I have little doubt that Mr. Lucas sees the value of a DVD release. This is, in effect, the man who pioneered the now close relationship of movies and merchandising. I don't think that he'll turn a blind eye to the DVD market; in fact, I believe he'll take full advantage of it. Mr. Lucas is notorious for being close-mouthed about "Star Wars," and I think this is another example. The odds are that "The Phantom Menace" will indeed be out on DVD. Lucas just doesn't want us to know about it yet.
-
How many times does George Lucas have to say, "No DVDs until after Episode III is released," before you people will believe him?
He's made it VERY clear that he wants the DVD releases of all six episode to contain LOTS of extras. He's also said he wants to wait until DVD technology has advanced a little farther to accomodate his ideas for "all the extras".
Expecting any Star Wars DVD before then is nothing more than wishful thinking.
Respectfully,
Reverend Vader -
I hope somehow Lucas and the people that are responsible for the DVD release of ALL the star wars movies realize how much us DVD player owners are anticipating the release of Star Wars Movies on DVD. Hell that is one of the main reason I bought one so that one day I could Own all the Star Wars movies on DVD and be the coolest kid on the block.
(even the Ewok movies) -
The press release on TPM is out, and there will not be a DVD release this year, or the forseeable future, according to Fox.
-
There seems to be one reason and one reason only why Lucas would not release the DVD in April...money. Its quite obvious that if the DVD was available, all fans with players would not waste their money on an inferior vhs tape. Realizing this, and also realizing that most fans will not have the patience to wait several years for the DVD release, Lucas has come with a way to force those with DVD players to purchase the VHS and eventually to purchase the DVD as well. Why have one release when you can have two? I think its about time the fans made it clear that Lucas should stop taking advantage of them in his pursuit of ultimate profits...I think a boycott of the episode I vhs release should be organized -- nobody should purchase one these pieces of junk until Lucas agrees to release the DVD simultaneously and allow fans to make their own choices about what they will buy.
Unless the fans start standing up to Lucas, this kind of ridiculous behaviour will only worsen over the next few years as episodes II and III create whole new opportunities with which Lucas can expand his fortune at our expense. -
The thing I hate about George Lucas is that to him, it's not enough to be a jillionaire, he has to be a zillionaire. And GEC, I've read Conan Doyle, but I don't recognize your screen name.
-
My thoughts:
1 - Although TPM does have some awesome moments, it pales in comparison to the originals.
2 - Lucas is so hot on new technology, yet he fails to embrace DVD. It doesn't make sense! Give us the basic movies now and the special editions later. We'll pay for both!!!
3 - Isn't it ironic that the same man who created the awesome world of Star Wars is also responsible for tearing it down?

Jar jar sucked. Even if they did come out with the film on DVD, I wouldn't buy it, at least not yet.
George wants to release them all together in a six pack. I wish that he would spend more time on the next film making sure that it is better than this one. Leaving the cheesy stuff on the drawning board and having a producer who actually will tell his powerful director what sounds good and what sounds terrible. -
I remember in 1987 you could find practically anything on compact disc, except the Beatles. The record companies hyped it into a big release for the 20th anniv of the 'summer of love' etc. I also heard that they were trying to make every last dollar off their remaining record stock. I see parallels with the release onto DVD. I have been converted, and the format is here to stay. Star Wars doesn't need to be on HD-DVD, it was only filmed in 35mm anyway.
-
Travel the globe finding each and every copy of the Phantom Menace VHS(just typing it disgusts me) and burning them until Lucas the Retard releases it on dvd.
-
Lucas rules!! Episode one was what it was. A good Star Wars movie done 16 years later.I saw ANH at 11 yrs old.I'm 33 for TPM and its got to be taken in the correct vibe.Anyone who thought they would be sitting down to the first trilogy reborn were kidding themselves. The first three films were lightning in a bottle,u can't recapture that.TPM was what I was hoping for.A solid first 1/3 to be expanded on.Was some of it silly?Sure. Could there have been more character development?Of course but u must remember this is a broad canvas...three films worth of story so don't whine so much....all the good stuff is coming...as a first chapter it does what it should. It's not perfect but I can't imagine what some of u guys were expecting. It won't change your life at the end of the day it's just a movie.
-
By the way I have to give props to Mr Tibbs for advising G.E.C That he should shut the Fuck up as after reading his post I am also of the opinion that he is a pretentious Blowbag...albeit one with a decent vocabulary.Anyway you kids should play nice together and as I thought the Matrix was fantastic I must point out G.E.C's lame ass comment about muscular hypertrophy after a coma.I'm dissapointed G.E.C how could you make such an obvious error during your otherwise carefully worded terrorist attack?!All the John Woo shit took place in the dream world while Jello boy Neo was laying his tired ass in a recliner!"I Know Kung Fu." "Show me." Just thought I'd point that out. PEACE!!
-
As for the DVD(Ah...finally the point)Of course I'm drooling for it.We all know we're lining Georgie boys pockets but what the fuck...Antiquated VHS sux but we all know how shrewd Lucas is ...Make em' buy the tape and then not so long after release the DVD.Why do u think he released the widescreen edition...he knows that no self respecting fan would watch TPM in dogshit pan and scan.So give 'em a "special edition"(I could care less about the fucking film strip we're essentially paying 30 bucks for) DVD is coming he just doesn't want you to know it yet.Make the fans panic w/the thought that they'll be waiting 6 years to have this film in a solid format for home viewing and watch the widescreen "Limited edition" tape fly out the fuckin' door.Alright George we're lining up to give you our Goddamned money so pony up and give us the fucking DVD!!
