THE APES Will RISE Sooner Than Expected!!
Merrick here...
Fox is pulling RISE OF THE APES - essentially a reimagined "origin story" for its fabled PLANET OF THE APES pictures - from its previously scheduled November release date and is now installing it into a late Summer slot (August 5, to be exact).
In its new date, "Apes" will go up against three other wide releases, including Sony's toon hybrid "The Smurfs," Universal's Jason Bateman-Ryan Reynolds comedy "The Change-Up" and 3D sci-fi thriller "The Darkest Hour," from Summit.
...says THIS piece in Variety.
I love, love, love the original PLANET OF THE APES films (PLANET OF THE APES, BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES) and loathe, loathe, loathe Tim Burton's subsequent loud, heartless, over-produced reworking. That film didn't play well because it relied upon the gimmick of the PLANET OF THE APES films, while neither understanding or embracing the cultural subtexts and socio-political heart which drove them. PLANET OF THE APES without relevant societal observation is utterly laughable and completely pointless, and I truly hope the same mistakes won't be made in RISE. Although I suspect they will be, as precious few mainstream Science Fiction movies these days are bold enough to (or are allowed to) be about to be about anything meaningful (Neill Blomkamp being an apparent exception, with arguably Duncan Jones and very few others bringing up the rear).
If you like the original PLANET OF THE APES films, or even if you only find them "interesting", you might enjoy THIS book - PLANET OF THE APES REVISITED. It's thorough-but-breezy, and chronicles the pre-production, production, post-production, and release of all five films in the original APES movie series. The book reveals the original (and quite provocative and daring) concept for the final film in the series (BATTLE FOR...) - much of which wasn't advanced in the final product - and provides insight and anecdotes into the making of each film (loved the tales of James Fransiscus disapproving of the script for BENEATH so fervently that he and a writing partner re-worked the entire screenplay over a weekend; it's not clear how much of their material was ultimately adopted). It's a quick read and you'll learn a lot - check it out.

haven't they figured out how to make an original Apes movie?
-
It's seriously NOT that bad (Mark Wahlberg aside).
-
I guess I haven't really been paying attention as this is the first time I've noticed a story about this actually being a reality not a rumour.
-
POTA = POS
Burton's one that is.
I quite liked the second Apes movie actually. The climax when the lead guy meets up with Heston's character from the first movie and together take on the crazed nuke-worshipping humans is pretty f'ing cool. -
Imagine how much better that movie would be. Maybe they should cut their losses and combine them
-
Apes 1, 2, 3, & 4 RULE.
-
Of course you can!
Well, I couldn't before! -
I fucking LOVE the Planet of the Apes series. Great, Great Science Fiction. The whole series is so bleak when you look at it. Totally excited for this. My only concern is the fact that their doing the Ape effects via CGI. As a fan, I love the physical makeup effects. So I hope this bringing up the release dates doesn't affect the CGI too bad.
The best thing about the Tim Burton one was the makeup. But yeah, completely soulless, without a hint of real social-political commentary and subtext that made the original series so great. -
No, you'll never make a monkey out of me!
Oh my GOD -- I was wrong!

The appeal of the "Apes" franchise has always been lost on me.

The original is like a good long-form episode of the Twilight Zone. It wasn't something that I felt needed revisiting over and over.
For those that love it, though, more power to you. Hopefully this will recapture the magic for you. -

Yes, we need some more falls around here.

The original movies were amazing - the Burton version was dreadful. The guy is so over-rated. Soon as I saw his sketch for the helmets made from a huge spiral I knew it would be shit.
I realy hope this version has some teeth, nothing would make me happier than a great apes movie that spawns a dozen brilliant sequels.
Should have got Dave Elsey and Rick Baker to do it with make-up though, the jury's out about cgi apes. -

What's the socio-political angle this time, do the apes want their country back?
by the_choppah
-
But that's all, those damn dirty apes.
-
What made Planet of the Apes so special was the biting social commentary and lashing out against rigid thinking. "Flight is impossible!" (Builds paper airplane, flies it)
What social dynamic would we exploit in this new one? The internet as witness? Environmental destruction and species extinction? Do the superintelligent lab apes see humankind as a threat to all species, and step up as protectors of the planet to eliminate that threat?
Revisiting the movie, you can see how the Animatrix segment about the beginnings of the machine rebellion borrows heavily from POTA. -
Agreed on the worthlessness of the sequel - devoid of any depth or soul - much like just about any Burton production since Edward Scissorhands.

Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines, Dark Knight Rises, Rise of the Apes...

Burton's POTA - Helena Bonham Carter never looked better

Really. It was like a decent Sci-Fi franchise in the 30+ years ago. I'm 38 and to my best recollection, I saw all the Apes movies when I was a kid on cable tv.
What we really need is more socio-political themes in our movies. Theres not enough of that going around. -
That would be Furious George.

Aaaaaaand.......scene. -
I actually rather liked the Burton version. I know thats heresy around here but I enjoyed it. The makeup was amazing, and if you can't see that I feel sorry for you. But it DID have social commentary. I don't know, maybe it hit me harder because I'm a minority and I saw a lot of things in it that seemed like commentary on race. It was little things like all the dumb but big and angry super religious apes being jet black that struck me as poking fun of stereotypes while simultaneously perpetrating them. However, the "climactic" battle sequence at the end was very much a let down.

In Burton's defense, yes, the blacks/apes symbolism is a natural but finding similarly appropriate comparisons today are difficult. Today it's the Chinese and the Muslims that will soon be taking over the world, divvying it up and eventually wiping out white people. So, what is the Chinese or Muslim animal equivalent? Rise of the Pandas? Planet of the Camels?

It also has a good pace. It manages to rehash the original in half the time and then move on to the original ideas in the second.
The Earth blowing up at the end was a great ending too. -

"Wah! You got socio-political import in my sci-fi," said the twenty-something.
by subtitles_off
"And here I am just trying to be useless and vacant as usual!"
-
You are incorrect. I am a huge fan of both the Planet of the Apes films and The Simpsons. The only time I ever think about that particular Simpsons episode in relation to POTA is when there's a mention of an Apes movie here at Ain't It Cool and suddenly the lyrics of the Simpson song are posted ad nauseum as if we'd never heard them before.
-
Then you'll know how far BOTH movies deviated from the source material.
For instance, the original astronauts were French, took along an orangutan with them, and the planet they land on is a modern 20th century apes version of earth.
The single biggest difference it that the whole story is told in flashback as the astronauts story was found as a literal message in a bottle floating in space. The book also has a better ending in my opinion. -
Watched that again recently. The first hour is still really good, but I had forgotten how much it descends into a big-budget A-Team episode by the end...rather dull extended shootouts with clunky editing. I guess that marked the moment where Charlton Heston's destiny lay in movies that were more about action than drama, for much of the next decade.
I was so hopeful when BEDTIME FOR BONZO came out that it heralded the return of both humans and chimps as genuinely dramatic actors. But it was a false dawn for both. -

Its as if the only direction he gave Marky prior to every scene was "Deliver your line short of breath"

Moving it from the holiday season in November to the end of the summer (August) is a BAD sign. It looks like FOX doesn't think the movie is that good, so they want to try and rake it some bucks before the kiddies head back to school.

Sounds like it's now gonna be a rush job. Spielberg pulled that rush bullshit with both War of the Worlds and Indy 4 and both turned out bad. BAD.

Man, am I with you guys. As much as I liked the original, it s-s-s-s-s-s-ucks compared to the book. When for Gods sake when, will we get a faithful adaptation of the book. Read it years and years ago and it is still one of the best books I've ever read. Anyone that hasn't read it should pick it up and check it out. It might even make you hate every filmed version out there. Ironically, the end of Burton's film captured more of the book than the original did. Same premise sort of, but the Burton version nailed it a bit better. Still, none of the movies has even come close to the book. Bring on a real adaptation now.
-
Please universe, strike Mark Wahlberg dead!

When this movie comes out and makes $14.00
Of the 9 people who care about planet of the Apes, 4 of them don't even go to the movies anymore. -
I'll be interested to read the reviews before watching this.
And yeah, Burton made a complete pile of shit out of a great concept. -
The Fox that produced the fabled 5 film series is long gone, and unfortunately, there isn't a suit in Hollywood that can grasp the significance of what makes great and daring sci-fi. However, there is no shortage of filmmakers that are up to the task and that is what makes genre films so frustrating in this day and age. Some of this is perpetuated by the very filmmakers that blazed new trails in the medium in the 80's and have since lost their way. Spielberg is and always will be a master craftsman. Yet, outside of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull (which I absolutely loved), the beard is genuinely obsessed with WWII or WWI, or war itself (still waiting on that Lincoln assassination flick Steve!). That is honorable, but the man is still the best genre picture director out there, but he really isn't making genre pictures anymore. I have revisited the Star Wars prequels recently, and found that my loathing of them has subsided somewhat, but that is only because I finally figured out what kind of story Lucas was trying to tell. There is no shortage of eye candy, to be sure, but this is no story of a young man's quest. It is a political drama, pure and simple. It is only about Palpatine coming to power. Anakin's story is really just a sub plot, and that is the problem with the prequels. However, Lucas understands the power of the Star Wars brand. He can make anything with the name Star Wars attached to it and people will see it. Myself being on of them. I have to. The same goes for anything associated with Planet of the Apes. There is no doubt in my mind that Fox and those involved are going to fuck this up. I'm really not the negative type, but Fox is in ownership of a brand that they can exploit. Part of the problem is that everyone is over thinking what a new Apes series has to be. Much in the same way they constantly over thought the Alien series, beginning with Alien 3 and finally crashing with Alien Resurrection. Both films were heavily produced from the studio. Perhaps Ridley can finally turn this around with Prometheus. Seriously, would you fuck with Ridley Scott? Hell no. A simple remake may be in order for Apes. This may be a stretch, but remakes were at one time the order of the day. With each leap in technology, you could be sure that Hollywood had a remake in mind. The Bogart version of The Maltese Falcon is the third version of that story! Mutiny on the Bounty and Beau Geste come to mind as well. The term "remake" is far less offensive to me than the term "reboot", especially after witnessing epic failings of rebooted material. For every Casino Royale there is two Hulks. Apes does not need to be over thought. My problems with the Burton film are immeasurable, primarily that the planet they were on was not Earth! That is a huge plot point in the original that people are totally aware of, but there is a generation or two out there that are unaware of that awesome climax and could be surprised by it. So could we, if it were to be sprung on us properly. Also, Apes is not a story that should be told chronologically. It seems as though thats the plan with Rise of the Apes, which so far has struck me as a retelling (or reboot) of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (my second favorite in the series). The heart of the original Apes series is its reflection of our (then) current society. Of course there is plenty of grist for that mill today, and it should be used. The biggest difference between then and now is that the 70's Apes series generated respectable cash for what they spent on the films and the awesome and over looked TV show, but it was no Star Wars. These movies are now expected to make as much cash as possible and that means pulling back the context and ramping up the spectacle. God forbid the movie offends anybody, but I have never heard of anyone being offended by the original series of movies. The Burton Apes flick was offensive for all the wrong reasons, least of which was its own seriously lame attempt at conveying social metaphor. In the late 60's - early 70's, the Apes filmmakers were pretty much left alone to make the films that they wanted to, and they came up with some fun and fascinating stuff. I highly doubt that today's Fox would just hand over the reigns of a potential franchise to a smart director without interference. After all, the suits know exactly what they're doing. Making money, not movies.

He's a brilliant cinematographer - but NO director. Love the original POTA films. Despise the 're-imagining' cash in. Pierre Boulle's original novel was a thesis on race. The new film better have some grounding in social depth.

by riskebiz
I find it disconcerting that there is next to NOTHING in terms of promotion for this movie. No teaser posters. No teaser promos. Nothing. They better start promoting the hell out of this thing if they want anybody to show up on opening day.
-
You are aware that the original Apes movies were rated "G", right?
And to those crying out for Burton's head regarding his POTA... Come on, his brought in EXTREMELY late in the game. This was not a movie that him and his people developed from the ground up (though even those have been dodgy lately). It is no masterpiece, and I have not re-watched it in ages, but despite all the strikes against it (in terms of story, pacing and Wahlberg, who is great in the right role and absolutely DIES in the wrong roles) it does have several things going for it. 1) some of Rick Baker's best work ever. 2) a fantastic production design, 3) excellent performances from Giamatti, Roth and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa -
Hollywood, buy a fucking thesaurus.
-
We need some lateral movement. Something slow and furtive.
-
So it fits the rest of them?
I can't stand inconsistent titles. -
The rest of them were absolute shite. Overrating them because Burton stuck closer to Bule's story is not a very perceptive comment.

August release dates usually means the studio lacks faith.
by allpowerfulwizardofoz
Can anyone name me one super successful movie from an August release? I am talking big tent pole money maker. If a studio sets up a movie for an August date it usually means they lack faith in it appealing to a large audience and it will do modestly at best appealing only to diehards.
-
"while neither understanding or embracing the cultural subtexts and socio-political heart which drove them"
ye waaaa... its a bunch o cunts in monkeysuits, it mightve worked in the 70's but now it just sounds fucking cheesey and shite -
I originally meant that as a funny line, but then the more I thought about it, the more I realized that dumb things in life really happen.
I hope "Apes" does not suck. It would kill any chances for future films. -
If it is successful we will see humans destroy themselves in a war with the apes and we will see their post-apocalyptic civilization develop.
I'm not saying it's a better way to do it, but remember that it was Rod Serling, NOT Boulle who decided the astronauts had returned to Earth. Boulle always inteded it to be an alien planet.
And no, Boulle's book had jack shit to do with race. It was an anti-vivisectionist book. It says it right in the special features of the 2-disc DVD if you ever bothered to watch them. -
Good source material, and two great screenwriters. Um.. Rod Serling folks... master of the ironic ending!

They should just remake the originals, shot for shot, but make use of current special effects
by the_choppah
Kids these days could use the social messages of the originals.
-
If I remember correctly, and it has been a while since I read the book, when the astronauts returned to Earth, it was run by the apes. I figured that the implication was that they were on earth all along. The only reason they didn't know in the book was because of the time difference. The story said that humans had made the primates into servants and they had eventually taken over because the humans got lazy. Did I miss something or do I have to read the book again?
-
All right, but you're so damned ugly.
-
I lurvs me some Planet of the Apes, but in what universe am I gonna plop down $75 to buy a non-collectible tome about those movies?
-
Yeah, but that's because you're kind of a twat.
-
hmmmm
-
I don't know why I typed that!?!
-
A very cheap, very flawed movie, whose scripted ending was unforgivably censored and butchered. And yet, Ricardo Montalban and Roddy McDowall were two of the finest actors ever to appear in science fiction, and they make you care.
RISE is this decade's HOME. 20 years ago every title had to have Home. From reasonable usage like Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Home Alone to titles where Home apparently became a punctuation mark: Fly Away Home and Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home.
The original Planet of the Apes was rated G because in 1968 the rating system was new and studios were still feeling liberated from decades of the Hays Code. Nobody knew how to design a film to have a particular rating because there was no experience. I say we need a new rating system now, something structurally different so it's not just changing the labels. PG-13 has become the new Hays Code of big-budget films.
